Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Mkhitaryan shines as United cruise through but Austin is injured and Southampton crash out as the final round of Europa League group matches give and take in equal measure. Here’s how it all panned out…

Zorya Luhansk 0 Manchester United 2

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) saw United safely through to the knock out stages of the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho’s men controlled the match but had to wait until the second half for the goals to come.

Mkhitaryan gave them the lead with a fine individual effort – his first for the club – before Paul Pogba (8.2) released Ibrahimovic to secure the victory.

Mourinho was fulsome in his praise of Mkhitaryan post-match.

“He has a strong mentality. He was very determined to fight against his difficult adaptation, and he’s doing that in the best way….He fought to improve tactically, he fought to improve physically, and now he is playing good in the Premier League, good in the Europa League and the EFL Cup, and now evolving a bit more happiness for him, so I’m very pleased.”

The midfielder is currently in just 1.7% of Fantasy Premier League squads. If his form is starting to make him a consistently likely starter, United’s fixtures will only add to his allure – after a Sunday match against Spurs, the Red Devils will host Sunderland and Middlesbrough and travel to Palace, West Brom and West Ham before the FA Cup third round in early January.

Mourinho made five changes from the team that drew with Everton, with defender Eric Bailly (5.3), making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in October.

The Ivorian’s return was impressive, though his manager was quick to remind us that he’s set to depart for international duties with Ivory Coast next month:

“Phi Jones and Marcos Rojo did five great matches for us in a row playing well and solid. To have Eric back we know he goes to the Africa Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, but in this busy period to have him is a good protection for us.”

Three starters against Everton – Michael Carrick (4.3), Antonio Valencia (5.4) and Matteo Darmian (5.0) – didn’t even make the trip to Ukraine.

United will play their Round of 32 tie between Gameweek 25 (home to Watford) and Gameweek 26’s Manchester derby. How Mourinho juggles
his squad for that latter match will be a particularly interesting issue further down the line.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Lingard 65), Rooney (Fellaini 70), Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 84), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Jones, Martial, Rashford.

Southampton 1 Hapoel Be’er Sheva 1

Southampton bowed out of the Europa League with a whimper and an injury to leading scorer Charlie Austin (6.9).

The qualification equation was simple enough – stop their Israeli visitors from scoring and a place in the Round of 32 would be assured.

When Hapoel did score, from their one and only shot on target, the Saints suddenly needed to win the tie and were left just 12 minutes to do it.

A Virgil van Dijk (5.6) equaliser in the first minute of time added on gave them a brief flicker of hope, but the listless Saints were not up to the task.

An earlier injury to Austin added to the insult of defeat. The striker fell heavily following an aerial challenge and aggravated a long-standing shoulder issue. Despite telling the medical staff he was all right, Austin was clearly in pain and had to be replaced by Shane Long (6.1).

With Southampton embarking on a three-match run in seven days at the weekend, the historically fragile forward looks likely to struggle to play his part – a major blow to his 17.4% ownership base, and particularly those already having to react to the four-match ban for fellow striker Sergio Aguero (12.9).

Speaking post-match, coach Claude Puel confirmed that the striker would be ruled out of Sunday’s visit of Middlesbrough.

“Charlie has a shoulder injury and we will see this. I don’t know how many times he stays out but it’s important for us…I don’t know but he cannot play for the next game of course…We will assess him in the next few days.”

Austin’s shoulder is a known weak point, having been cursed by injuries in that area throughout his career. Given that record, the fear is that the striker could now be facing a prolonged period on the sidelines – certainly, Southampton are unlikely to take any risks regarding his return date.

Puel is set to face the press this morning at 11.30 when we are likely to get a fresh opinion on Austin’s situation.

Requiring just a 0-0 stalemate to progress, the Southampton boss fielded his strongest side of the European campaign, making only three changes from the team humbled by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

He must have been ruing that decision with Austin’s departure, although the second half return to action of Dusan Tadic (7.0) following a three-match lay-off sweetened an otherwise decidedly bitter pill.

Tadic will now challenge for a starting role against Middlesbrough, with Nathan Redmond potentially shifting to a central role. Shane Long (£6.1m) is perhaps the more natural replacement for Austin, however.

The Saints are not in the best of shape at the moment, with just one win and five points from their last six league matches.

A fine run of fixtures now awaits, but the potential loss of Austin and the morale-sapping nature of their European exit is hardly the ideal preparation.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Davis, Romeu, Højbjerg (Ward-Prowse 82), Redmond, Sims (Tadic 59), Austin (Long 39).
Subs not used: Lewis, Fonte, McQueen, Clasie.

They aren't too awful, all will be slated as "winnable"... Burnley away not ideal but OK, then misfiring Leicester and Southampton at home. All games he could get a return in.

Obviously Nacho is the clear choice. Maybe I'm just being too contraction?

I'm also feeling some crazy resistance to Nacho for some reason. I got Austin cheap so no loss even if he drops .1 tonight so I'm playing Capoue and waiting. I'd ruled out Callum as an option having glanced at fixtures but you might be onto some thing there....I also want to see how Llorente, Carroll, Gray and Origi get on though, so many options !

I feel the same way lol, and I know all my ml rivals have brought him in too so I just don't know if it's worth the -8.

I'd def leave it if I had Capoue. My issue is I either have Fletcher (che) or Pieters (ars) off the bench, neither of whom I'd want to come on. So I guess I have to make a move...
                    1/ Iheanacho
                    2/ Origi
                    3/ Callum Wilson
                    4/ Carroll
5/ Anichebe as a Costa enabler, but that's really awful lol

                    Ughhhhh

5 might not be such a bad move you know, stats are good and there has been some end product...if it enables Costa too given the fixtures it might be a blessing in disguise....unless he picks up that yellow this week of course, who you ditching for Costa ?

Due to other injuries, I still have Kaku, so hes the obvious fall guy.

Problem is everyone has Costa now, so he might well not be worth me getting in I'd be effectively getting a score of 0 for doing so.

Really dk mate, thinking Callum or Origi are my two here to think about, I've just heard two of my ml rivals have done Nacho so it really doesn't seem worth it

The issue is without Costa (assuming your ML rivals have him) you will end up losing more ground so in that sense a 0 is better than a -4,6 etc. Same applies to Nacho. I think sometimes being strategic in your ML is important, particularly at this stage of the season. Your differentials can come later on, maybe in 2 GW's ! not exciting to mirror moves I know but this week it might be the way forward. Good luck, if you do go with a differential I hope it pays off !

No, it was the correct decision and he should be commended.

Last season Spurs effectively "threw" a EL knockout game against Dortmund and went out of the competition. Pochettino's comments on his weakened team amounted to "Dortmund are a CL-level team and we can't live with them".

It was passed over at the time because Spurs were also going for the PL title. But it sent a terrible message to his players, effectively "we aren't capable of fighting on 2 fronts like a big team does every season". Imagine how Kane, Alli, Lloris and the rest felt when they saw Liverpool knock Dortmund out in the next round.

That weakness from Pochettino (which he later acknowledged) actually created even more pressure on his team and they eventually cracked at Chelsea when they lost their heads (and their chance of the PL) entirely. Mental strength counts for a lot at the very top level. That's what Pochettino had forgotten. He had given his team an excuse not to be good enough or tough enough.

I would even go so far as to see Spurs' demise in the CL this season as a residual continuation of the same effect. So I was very pleased to see the team Pochettino fielded against CSKA in the last CL game. There were mutterings about "we don't need the EL stinking up our season, 4th place in the CL group is better than 3rd". But this time he fielded his very best team, qualified for the EL knockout stages and said afterwards that Spurs owe it to themselves and their fans to do their utmost to win it and that that was their intention.

So, he has now begun to educate his team about what it will take to be a regular CL team. He has inherently told them that they are capable of it and there will be no holding back. And that re-writes last season's mistake. Psychologically I think beating CSKA will prove to be a big turning point in Spurs' season and in their development as a team.

Puel didn't make the same mistake. His players will be sore to have gone out. But they won't be feeling that they wimped out. That is vitally important.

Mark Hughes: "Arsenal, as a team, look in good shape and whilst we have a lot of confidence, given their form too, it isn't a good time to play them. At times Arsenal have struggled with consistency, and it has cost them, but you sense this could be their year. They have top level players and we have to be vigilant against them, and not gift them opportunities. They can overpower any team. It's important for us to give ourselves an opportunity to get something out of the game, we need to stay in the match and frustrate them."

They will park the bus, won't they? Will they succeed or fail, that is the question. Double Stoke defence on my bench could easily backfire 🙄

If they can survive the first half without conceding then it could be a close game, but I think Arsenal will get an early goal personally.

If Conte doesn't give a definitive answer on Costa, and he will still be flagged as 75%, what are the chances that we will rise a third time this week? On fplstatistic he's currently around 35%.

Well, since he will be reset to 0 when the flag comes off, I don't think it will be possible. Not since a lot already own him.

35% is still closer to a price change, but I'm not sure if it requires more transfers when a player is yellow flagged..

Taking advantage of cheaper strikers up front, if Aguero wasn't banned I wouldn't be able to. And they are the nearest to a guaranteed clean sheet I can come up with.

I think West Brom will try to park the bus, which most likely won't work, but I don't see a massive goal fest.

Patchy, fancy WBA to score. Should get a green arrow if no hits.

        Yeah minutes are real issue.
On a minus 8 already this wk so guess il have to wait til midweek. Nacho only obvious replacement but don't see difference between him and kun as in city haven't been great so not sure why all the nacho love.

Have a look at Llorente's point return this season and then decide.

This season has been all about form, not fixtures. Fixtures inspire form, but Swansea are terrible. Burgers.

IF -and I'll re-emphasise the word IF - he plays, he is good value at that price... I've been keeping an eye also. I'd wait and see first

so Hazard has Mike Dean and GMac might be missing. Sanchez is up against a weary stoke side. Could go either way this weekend...

Prefer Hazard's home form & Mike Dean over Sanchez's home form.

repost as bottomed last article. Would love some advice fromthe pros!!

    Hi folks, some advice please:

    Cech
Lovren / Stones / Van Dijk
    Sanchez / Hazard / Mane / Phillips
    Kane / Austin / Defoe

    Jaku / Capoue / Friend / Amat

Already used FT on Aguero > Kane
    2.7 itb

    Should I:
    Austin > Iheanacho for a -4?

Also, play Phillips or capoue? Fixture says Capoue but form says Phillips.....

    Thanks in advance people.

Could do Austin to Anichibe to save funds for Costa if you want him?

    I'm trouble gents.. . 1 FT and 0.5
    Team currently is:

    Pickford
    Lovren / Alonso / Amat
    Sanchez (c) / Firminho / Siggy / Snoddy
    Kane / Austin** / Aguero**

    Boruc / Fuchs / Fletcher / Pieters

I can afford Aguero, Austin, Snoddy and Fuchs --> Costa, Anichibe, Hazard and Cedric over the next few weeks..

If I go Aguero & Austin -> Costa & Kelchi I can't get Hazard next week..

    Any thoughts appreciated?

This week question is: Chelsea can break WBA or United is really that weak?

I think the utd game will be tight. Spurs win 2-1 or something. I think Chelsea can break Wba, especially with the fitness news just announced...

Austin to Carroll next week? (BUR, HUL, swa, lei)

  29. stat
      7 years, 4 months ago

      Heaton (Grant)
      Smith Williams Mustafi Alonso (Amat)
      Hazard Sanchez Siggy (Allen) (Fletcher)
      Costa Austin Kane

Already took a 4 pt hit earlier on this week to bring in Alonso for Morgan and Costa for Aguero. However, I have another 1.2m in the bank meaning I can bring in Defoe for Austin with 0.2m remaining.

      So the question is:
Austin -> Defoe for an 8 pt hit?

Nacho has better points per minute ratio than Alexis.
