Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Mkhitaryan shines as United cruise through but Austin is injured and Southampton crash out as the final round of Europa League group matches give and take in equal measure. Here’s how it all panned out…

Zorya Luhansk 0 Manchester United 2

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) saw United safely through to the knock out stages of the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho’s men controlled the match but had to wait until the second half for the goals to come.

Mkhitaryan gave them the lead with a fine individual effort – his first for the club – before Paul Pogba (8.2) released Ibrahimovic to secure the victory.

Mourinho was fulsome in his praise of Mkhitaryan post-match.

“He has a strong mentality. He was very determined to fight against his difficult adaptation, and he’s doing that in the best way….He fought to improve tactically, he fought to improve physically, and now he is playing good in the Premier League, good in the Europa League and the EFL Cup, and now evolving a bit more happiness for him, so I’m very pleased.”

The midfielder is currently in just 1.7% of Fantasy Premier League squads. If his form is starting to make him a consistently likely starter, United’s fixtures will only add to his allure – after a Sunday match against Spurs, the Red Devils will host Sunderland and Middlesbrough and travel to Palace, West Brom and West Ham before the FA Cup third round in early January.

Mourinho made five changes from the team that drew with Everton, with defender Eric Bailly (5.3), making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in October.

The Ivorian’s return was impressive, though his manager was quick to remind us that he’s set to depart for international duties with Ivory Coast next month:

“Phi Jones and Marcos Rojo did five great matches for us in a row playing well and solid. To have Eric back we know he goes to the Africa Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, but in this busy period to have him is a good protection for us.”

Three starters against Everton – Michael Carrick (4.3), Antonio Valencia (5.4) and Matteo Darmian (5.0) – didn’t even make the trip to Ukraine.

United will play their Round of 32 tie between Gameweek 25 (home to Watford) and Gameweek 26’s Manchester derby. How Mourinho juggles
his squad for that latter match will be a particularly interesting issue further down the line.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Lingard 65), Rooney (Fellaini 70), Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 84), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Jones, Martial, Rashford.

Southampton 1 Hapoel Be’er Sheva 1

Southampton bowed out of the Europa League with a whimper and an injury to leading scorer Charlie Austin (6.9).

The qualification equation was simple enough – stop their Israeli visitors from scoring and a place in the Round of 32 would be assured.

When Hapoel did score, from their one and only shot on target, the Saints suddenly needed to win the tie and were left just 12 minutes to do it.

A Virgil van Dijk (5.6) equaliser in the first minute of time added on gave them a brief flicker of hope, but the listless Saints were not up to the task.

An earlier injury to Austin added to the insult of defeat. The striker fell heavily following an aerial challenge and aggravated a long-standing shoulder issue. Despite telling the medical staff he was all right, Austin was clearly in pain and had to be replaced by Shane Long (6.1).

With Southampton embarking on a three-match run in seven days at the weekend, the historically fragile forward looks likely to struggle to play his part – a major blow to his 17.4% ownership base, and particularly those already having to react to the four-match ban for fellow striker Sergio Aguero (12.9).

Speaking post-match, coach Claude Puel confirmed that the striker would be ruled out of Sunday’s visit of Middlesbrough.

“Charlie has a shoulder injury and we will see this. I don’t know how many times he stays out but it’s important for us…I don’t know but he cannot play for the next game of course…We will assess him in the next few days.”

Austin’s shoulder is a known weak point, having been cursed by injuries in that area throughout his career. Given that record, the fear is that the striker could now be facing a prolonged period on the sidelines – certainly, Southampton are unlikely to take any risks regarding his return date.

Puel is set to face the press this morning at 11.30 when we are likely to get a fresh opinion on Austin’s situation.

Requiring just a 0-0 stalemate to progress, the Southampton boss fielded his strongest side of the European campaign, making only three changes from the team humbled by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

He must have been ruing that decision with Austin’s departure, although the second half return to action of Dusan Tadic (7.0) following a three-match lay-off sweetened an otherwise decidedly bitter pill.

Tadic will now challenge for a starting role against Middlesbrough, with Nathan Redmond potentially shifting to a central role. Shane Long (£6.1m) is perhaps the more natural replacement for Austin, however.

The Saints are not in the best of shape at the moment, with just one win and five points from their last six league matches.

A fine run of fixtures now awaits, but the potential loss of Austin and the morale-sapping nature of their European exit is hardly the ideal preparation.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Davis, Romeu, Højbjerg (Ward-Prowse 82), Redmond, Sims (Tadic 59), Austin (Long 39).
Subs not used: Lewis, Fonte, McQueen, Clasie.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Charlie Austin is the talk of the town right now and seems to have been ruled out for Middlesbrough at home by Puel.

Given that he has a history of shoulder injuries and that some of the community were already questioning his potential minutes over December what are your thoughts about what move to make?

Will you be looking to keep and reassess next week? Have you already made a transfer and are considering a hit?

Who's the best replacement? The likely lads seem to be:

Benteke - 4th most goal attempts by a forward this season behind Aguero, Ibra and Costa. On pens but fixtures aren't fantastic after Hull (a) with Man Utd (h), Chelsea (h), Watford (a), Arsenal (a)

Defoe is only 16 points behind Diego Costa for the season who is deemed essential by some. At £3m less can you afford to upgrade and is he the best option?

Iheanacho brings some risk with potentially great rewards. A "mini Aguero" who always seems to score when he plays. Will Pep's rotation be too much?

Origi - Liverpool have some really nice fixtures and West Ham have been awful recently. Will he remain up top or will Firmino be put central with Lallana taking up Coutinho's position?

    Anyone else that you're considering?

      Post counter 😉

I'm debating whether a hit to Callum Wilson is worth it or if I should just play Capoue.

I already have Iheanacho so my forward line is pretty lightweight!

Tempted to bring in Defoe for an 8 pt hit. I can't see Defoe being rotated much this season and he has really impressed me so far. Already got Kane and Costa.

        I'm thinking either

Play bench and consider Carroll next GW
        Ihenacho punt
Origi as I have no Liverpool cover
        Anichebe + Mane/Firmino . Would be for a -8 though

For me I'd already taken a hit to bring in Sanchez and Can for Firmino and Walcott.

I like Iheanacho but do know there's some risk to bringing him in. That being said he always seems to score when he does play and at £6.6m I couldn't resist for these 4 fixtures so took another hit.

For me it's more interesting to have Iheanacho playing at the cost of 4 points than it is just to play Capoue and bench Austin, even if the latter is the more sensible choice.

If he starts 3 times I think I'll be happy.

The other issue with Nacho is he's a guaranteed transfer again in 4 weeks time. It's a hit to get him in and potentially another one to get him out if other injuries have occurred.

Wouldn't recommend him to anyone who can't cope with a few more hits down the line 🙂

            Not considering Anichebe?
He had a better game than Defoe against Leicester and was just unlucky to not score
Is it the price tag because of which everyone's not considering him as a potential 3rd striker in your front 7?

Just about to post almost the same hot topic

We really need to coordinate better Andy 😉

Andy's is now the daily hot topic.

Here's what I came up with with a couple of brief pros and cons for some of the main contenders.

With a pop and a groan it looks like Charlie Austin and more specifically his shoulder will be out of action for this weekend at least.

With that in mind who are the viable alternatives to fill his Saintly boots.

Here’s a few ideas with one pro and one con for eeach

        Kelichi Iheanacho (6.7)

Pro: He scored 20 points across just two games the last time Aguero was out.
Con: Pep Guardiola is unpredictable and he could field KDB as a false 9 over at least one game over Aguero’s ban

        Andy Carroll (6.1)

Pro: Great fixtures on the horizon, including Burnley and Hull at home (Hull concede lots of headed goal attempts btw)
Con: Will he be fit for those games given his injury record?

        Jermaine Defoe (7.8)

Pro: Eight goals already this season and Swansea up next. An immediate return for those taking a hit looks nailed on
Con: Fixtures are not the best over Christmas. But in reality there doesn’t seem to be too much downside to him if you have that extra money to afford him

        Christian Benteke (7.6)

Pro: Travels to Hull in search of his fifth goal in five games.
Con: He plays for Palace. 😉

Iheanacho for me....when aguero was out at the start of the season. Man C played fantastic as a team, I actually think they play better without Aguero.

KDB is also one too be watched and Stirling (when fit) as they seem to all gel more with Iheanacho in the team.....

I think this time it maybe a while before Aguero gets his place back fully, so Iheanacho could be gold.

        Personally I don't think I'll ship now.
As I mentioned earlier this morning, owners shipping him should be careful.

If they are only shipping him to get Nacho as a punt, then Austin might be next GW's punt.
With his juicy fixtures ahead, I am ready to play Pieters and keeping Austin on the bench for this GW.

Next GW is only days later, I can wait.
Except if Puel confirm it is long term.

Exactly my dilemma. I'd lean towards to Nacho for a -4, but in the immediate short term that's 6 points I'd need to recoup, if you add Capoue's obligatory 2.

I'd argue though that there's every chance Austin is out for a good while. And the drop in price for those of us that have him now, could merit a transfer.

Like Nacho better than Origi, but to me they're both a transfer out waiting to happen.

Considering either Defoe in 3-4-3 or Anichebe for a 3-5-2 most weeks. I should probably take a hit to upgrade Allen either way

Nacho vs Origi Shootout for me

Pool Fixtures: WHM - mid - eve - STO
City Fixtures: lei -WT - ARS -hul

1.Coutinho injury longer than Kun ban = more game time for Origi
2.Higher rotation risk at City than liverpool
3.Take into consideration how much coverage you have at pool and city

Step forward Mr Anichebe. When you remove Aguero and Austin from Doosra's Deadly Assassins (and set it to 4 GWs, as per Doosra's instruction), the only player above Victor is Harry Kane.

Brought Andy Carroll in for Austin last night. Means I can keep him as third striker as long as hes returning and swap one of Costa or Kane out to Kun in January.
By investing my Aguero money in one player (Lenihan to Alonso) rather than spreading it around the squad it means I can easily switch back to the City forward in two transfers (most likely Alonso back to Lenihan) while having five playing defenders over the busy festive period.

Finally bit the bullet and brought in Costa. Such a shame at 1.3 more than starting price

        Aguero ---> Kane
        Austin ----> Costa
        Chadli ----> Fer
        Tomkins ----> Muniesa (4.2)

        For a minus 12 whooooop

        Pickford
        Alonso
        Walker
        Cedric
        (Muniesa)
        (Amat)
        Hazard
        Sanchez

        Alli
        (Fer)
        Kane
        Costa
        (Anichebe)

I've just gone Austin to Defoe (over Nacho), having already used my free transfer on Aguero to Costa.

For me, the xmas period is uncertain enough and there's just no second guessing Pep's team selection. Defoe seems to be fairly fixture proof, which isn't bad for a defacto third striker playing for a struggling team.

Could see a shift to a different price category next GW.

Might make it a -12 and bring in Carroll and Alonso for Williams and Austin

Considering whether to play Kone (swa) and asses next week or take a hit for Iheanacho as I cannot afford Defoe/Benteke.

Really frustrating injury to get, already on a -8

Anichebe for me! 3m cheaper than Defoe and better stats.

Benteke - On 4 yellows and horrible fixtures after this gameweek.

Defoe - 3m more than Anichebe and not as good stats.

Iheanacho and Origi - Rotation risks.

Tempted to just dig into my bench of Amat and Pieters but then seeing that the next GW is midweek, there is a good chances he missed GW 16 too. The problem is I am already on a hit and can only afford Nacho, Origior downgrade to Anichebe. I am not convinced by the first 2. I think 'll get Anichebe + cash to upgrade Whelan next week. Will probably do this next week and absorb a 0.1 drop.

Posted last night that unless you can stretch to Defoe easily, it might be the smartest move to wait and restructure the team.

I had no idea how bad the other options at his price point were, especially during the holiday fixtures/false 9 revolution.

Is this the worst group we've ever seen as far as options at forward?
        Costa
        Kane
        Ibra
        Defoe
        Lukaku

Who is sixth best? Where is Edin Dzeko?

On wildcard so easy enough to do Austin to Iheanacho.

Once Aguero is back Iheanacho will be out for Anichebe, leaving enough funds to do Kane or Costa to Kun depending on his performance against Liverpool.

Already sold Austin pre-injury for Iheanacho so I feel mixed. Went for Iheanacho for the risk/differential, but a lot of people will make that move now anyway. This same thing happened when I went Aguero to Kane a week before kung fu gate.

Anichebe as 3rd striker frees up a ton of money, I now have Hazard, Sanchez, Kane, Ibra. It's all about the big hitters.

How about Ancichebe and Phillips rotations in the next few weeks:

Anichebe: swa, CHE, WAT, mun, bur, LIV
Phillips: che, SWA, MUN, ars, sot, HUL

That gives: swa, SWA, WAT, mun/ars, bur, HUL , it doesn't look that bad.

Anichebe with Zaha is another possible rotation.

Anichebe: swa, CHE, WAT, mun, bur, LIV
Zaha: hul, MUN, CHE, wat, ars, SWA, followed by an excellent run of fixtures through to GW27.

That gives: swa/hul, MUN, WAT, wat, bur, SWA.

Phillips and Zaha are both available for 5.4m and are both in excellent form in recent 4-6 game-weeks - which is better?

I'm thinking of getting Anichebe this GW for a hit, and then one of the other two for GW16.

        Origi is in!
Quite an exciting player to watch, Klopp loves him (none of this 'i only want to play midfielders' talk) and he's got 2 in 2.

He'll probably be a complete flop, but oh well, its Christmas!

Austin injury helps me sort of. Have Austin Defoe and Costa. Bringing in Anichbe as only that can afford me to bring Kane next week. Makes sense or is not a good option?

      Austin to:

      A) Wilson - Burnley (A), Leicester (H)
      B) Iheanacho - Leicester (A), Watford (H)
      C) Origi - West Ham (H), Middlesbrough (A)

        Heaton (Grant)
        Smith Williams Mustafi Alonso (Amat)
        Hazard Sanchez Siggy (Allen) (Fletcher)
        Costa Austin Kane

Already took a 4 pt hit earlier on this week to bring in Alonso for Morgan and Costa for Aguero. However, I have another 1.2m in the bank meaning I can bring in Defoe for Austin with 0.2m remaining.

Austin -> Defoe for an 8 pt hit?

That's a big factor for me - Origi and Iheanacho for example could easily be rotated, although it's likely that they will play a lot in the next few games. Similarly I can't see Benteke being rotated much.

I will have to correct you on your logic, as it is only Austin > Defoe for -4. I am considering the same but have a stronger bench. What will you do next week when Defoe faces Chelsea?

            1. stat
                7 years, 4 months ago

Yes, you are right, it's better to see it as a 4 pt hit. I'll benefit as long as Defoe doesn't blank.

                Regarding next week:
Allen plays SOU, Fletcher plays SWA (another Hawthorne's Massacre?), but even though Defoe plays Chelsea, it's hard to bench him. I'll probably start Defoe and bench one of those two, depending on how they perform this week as well.

A striker doesnt score every week, people dont take Costa or Aguero out when hes gets 2, just have to take a hit and say he will get 2 points vs chelsea and roll on next GW. Origi and Nacho are short term fixes, Defoe could be in all season, long term move.

Yes I know, but if I felt that Defoe would 100% blank against Swansea then I wouldn't bring him in this week. But yeah, you are correct - Defoe is the best long term investment atm.

It is Sanchez's home form, 70mins in CL and Perez hatrick which switched the armband for me. I doubt Perez will start and Sanchez will be up top vs Stoke but still the thought is there. Giroud also came on off the bench as well.

I think I'm going with Hazard because of how strong his home form is, and the added appeal of penalties in a game reffed by Mike Dean.

I wouldn't worry about the threat of Perez/Giroud though - Sanchez is extremely nailed on and Hazard is more likely to be subbed off earlier (70-80 min mark) and play less minutes than Sanchez is.

True, but to bring him in for a hit and be expecting a 2 point return in his next fixture doesn't sit well. Defoe has definitely proven that he is a consistent goal scorer, but you need to jump on players who are getting more points in the short term.

While I do agree with you, jumping on players in the short term does lead to issues when injuries and cards come out, like Cout and Aguero. If I waited till next GW to do it and a player in my team gets injured id be doing another hit anyway to get both inured players out.

Every player runs the risk of being injured, there's not much you can do about that. You just need a bench, which is why it is there.

I feel that the Christmas period will be hectic and could be riddled with injuries, suspensions (a lot of players are on 3/4 yellows) and loads of rotation so I'd rather go with a safer option than get someone who I'll have to spend a transfer on in the very near future.

Costa is probably slightly likelier to score, but I'm sure both have a high probability to score. I'd go with Hazard because I believe he has a higher points ceiling since he is a mid, and don't forget that he's on penalties and Mike Dean is reffing that game.

I think Costa is probably the safer pick in terms of just getting some points on the board as he's rarely blanking this season.

Would still put Hazard as the more explosive option though.

Really can't see WBA offering much going forward, even less if McAuley is out as it looks like he may be, major set piece threat gone.

I know there is a danger of overthinking at times, but anyone who is contemplating Hazard with the armband thinking of playing Foster as well? As Pickford may also concede, at least if Chelsea get a pen you should win one way or the other? Plus you’d think Foster will get some decent saves as well. Or put faith in a Sunderland back line away from home, albeit against a less fruitful attack?

Or it's 1-1 with no Hazard involvement. I always tend to think like this, well if so and so blanks I'll get a cleanie. Been burnt, I now just play the goalie who has the better fixture

I'll be playing Pickford rather than Foster but armband is likely to go to Sanchez.
Fancy defoe & pickford v's Swansea as they are at opposite ends of the form table.

I have Siggy so kinda irrelevant to me! On paper you would expect Chelsea to score more than Swansea, I think taking pens into consideration when it comes to deciding on a gk is worthless

Allen, Swansea have conceded 16 in 5 and Allen could easily pop up against an Arsenal defence with only 1 clean sheet recently

Although I can't see either player doing much this week, I'd go with Allen.

Swansea have kept a total of 2 clean sheets this season and excluding GW 1, Amat has never scored more than 2 pts in a single GW. Swansea are 20th in the league and 20th in the home league, no team has conceded more goals than Swansea have at home (16) and no team has conceded more goals than Swansea in total (31).

Sunderland (H) may look like an easy fixture, but Defoe is in great form. On the other hand, Sunderland have only scored 4 goals in 7 away games, but I still cannot see Swansea keeping a clean sheet.

Allen is apparently not 100% nailed on, but Arsenal haven't kept a clean sheet in a while so it's not out of the question for Stoke to sneak in a goal and for Allen to be involved.

TL;DR - Go with Allen, he has a higher points ceiling.

Might seem a bit excessive, but thoughts on

                          A) Austin+Allen+Foster -> Anichebe+Mane+Heaton -12
                          B) Austin+Foster -> Defoe+Heaton -8

                          Dilemma!

So, I've got Austin and Pedro who I got in for -8 last week along with Kane.

                          No bench worth mentioning

Should I just (A) take another -8 to get Hazard and a 6.2 striker in?

No good options at that price range really though. (Carroll, Gray, Llorente, Anichebe)

Or another option (B) is to keep Pedro (and thus continue without Hazard) but do Austin and Amat to Iheanacho and Alonso for -8.

Or option (C): just upgrade Austin to someone (up to 9.4) for -4.

                          So A, B or C?

                          Team in full:

                          Cech Pickford
                          Lovren Holebas Pieters Chambers Amat
                          Sanchez Firmino Siggy Pedro Carrick
                          Kane Costa Austin

                          0 FT 2,4 ITB

With Bolasie out for the season does this now make Mirallas a good option?

I have always rated him as a fantasy option but always had doubts over minutes...

                            Smith&Haz.
Haz has Mike Dean refereeing and better home form.
