The Watchlist Updated – The Goalkeepers

With the hectic festive period now behind us, and with the Winter Wildcards available (and, for some, in play), we’re focusing on our refreshed Watchlist rankings over the next few days.

We begin our four-part series reviewing the current standings by looking at the options in goal.

The Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button on your right slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

Second to only Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, Burnley’s Tom Heaton remains our go-to option between the sticks.

Heaton delivered a nine-point haul against Middlesbrough in Gameweek 18, registering his fourth clean sheet of the season, while he still tops the charts for saves with 83.

The Clarets do face a mixed upcoming schedule, though, with clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in their next five, which will likely see us relying on his save point potential.

But as a one-stop shop option in the sub 5.0 bracket, it’s difficult to overlook Heaton in the mid to long term.

With 20 points returned from saves and 13 bonus points accrued – seven more than his nearest rival – Heaton’s overall package remains convincing.

To put that into perspective, Manchester United’s David de Gea, as the most popular FPL goalkeeper with 34.8% ownership, has recorded six save points and two bonus.

Looking at that gap purely in terms of clean sheet returns, it would put Heaton the equivalent of five ahead of the United stopper, who has seven to his name, yet the Burnley man is still 0.6 cheaper.

Lee Grant now looks a hugely attractive prospect now that his move to Stoke City has been made permanent.

Mark Hughes’ side have kept two clean sheets in their last five matches, and face Sunderland, West Brom and Crystal Palace in their next five.

While Grant’s price has risen to 4.4 in FPL, that still looks to represent great value, given that Jack Butland continues to struggle with an ankle injury and appears some way off a first-team return.

West Bromwich Albion’s favourable upcoming schedule after the Gameweek 21 trip to White Hart Lane (SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU, CPL) pushes Ben Foster up to third place on our ladder.

Whereas Heaton is the standout option for the Clarets, both Chris Brunt (5.0) and Gareth McAuley (4.9) offer ample attacking potential and are similarly priced to Foster’s 4.7, denting his appeal.

Also available at 4.4 in FPL is West Ham United’s Darren Randolph, who has established himself as the Hammers’ first-choice keeper on the back of nine successive starts.

The Republic of Ireland international registered bonus points in the 1-0 wins over Burnley and Hull City last month, has five save points in his last four outings and, with four favourable fixtures (CPL, mid, WBA, wat) in the next six, continues to enjoy a rise in stock.

Randolph also benefits as he offers the cheapest route into the Irons defence by some distance, with Angelo Ogbonna the next best, coming in at 4.8.

Favourable upcoming schedules also see Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey and Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc enjoy a slight rise in our rankings.

While we’ve yet to see Sam Allardyce impact on the resilience of the Palace defence, he will now have more time on the training pitch following a busy start to his reign at Selhurst Park, which is expected to see the Eagles eventually tighten up at the back.

Palace, according to our Season Ticker, have the second most favourable schedule (whm, EVE, bou, SUN, sto, MID) over the next six Gameweeks.

The Wales international isn’t totally nailed on, though, with Steve Mandanda likely to return from a knee injury in the next few weeks, although the France international has been linked with a return to Marseille.

Boruc is slightly more expensive than Hennessey, setting us back 4.6 in FPL, but he has kept an impressive five clean sheets so far this term.

Bournemouth’s short-term fixtures (hul, WAT, CPL) look hugely obliging, with the Poland international expected to garner further defensive returns for his 6.7% ownership in FPL.

Like Foster, though, there’s obvious attacking competition from Boruc’s backline team-mates. Charlie Daniels has risen to third in the FPL defender standings and sets you back just 0.6 more than the Pole, while Nathan Ake – at just 4.4 – has notched three times in eight starts.

Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes sat out Gameweek 20, missing one of four favourable fixtures on his schedule, with Brad Guzan claiming a clean sheet against Leicester City.

Even so, a return for the Spaniard at Watford in Gameweek 21 would still set him up for a favourable run of matches that would justify a modest 4.6 outlay.

Aitor Karanka’s side have a favourable run right up to Gameweek 32: only ties with Spurs and Manchester United offer stern tests in that period.

Middlesbrough remain resolute at the back, so much so that Valdes can struggle for save point returns: he has gathered points from stops in just two of his last seven Gameweeks.

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet has taken his opportunity since ousting Loris Karius to the bench.

The Belgian has kept three clean sheets in his five starts but has gathered just two save points in that run.

At 4.7, Mignolet is the cheapest method of claiming cover in Jurgen Klopp’s backline, though Liverpool’s fixtures are certainly a barrier to investment.

The Reds face five of the top six over their next nine Gameweeks.

Having conceded four goals in his last two matches, and with difficult clashes against Liverpool and Arsenal to come in the next four, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois remains towards the bottom of our ladder, along with Southampton’s Fraser Forster, who has shipped nine goals in his last three appearances.

Courtois still offers the cheapest route into the Blues defence at 5.9 but the gap to Marcos Alonso and David Luiz is negligible enough to edge us towards investment in the defenders.

Equally, Forster at 5.1 is more expensive than full-back Cedric (4.9), although he is undoubtedly more secure. However, with Jose Fonte filing a transfer request in the last 24 hours, we could even have Yaya Yoshida available to us as an alternative in the Saints defence at just 4.2. The Japanese defender has started three of the last four for Claude Puel.

Obviously a lot of Dele/Erik love - but anyone looking at a Walker/Rose double up with maybe Alonso making way in a few weeks?

Rose over Toby, especially if spurs are going to play the wingback system some games.

    Afternoon guys!

Coutinho. Worth getting in for the Swansea game week after next? Saw with Kun this week it can be really good to get on a differential big gun as early as possible. I have added motivation in owning KdB from a failed new year's day punt so I was thinking it's the perfect move - hopefully he'll have a chance to prove his fitness in the FA Cup and league matches, right?

Bit behind in my mini leagues, so getting in early just seems a strong move.

Any thoughts appreciated! When's the best time to consider, or get, Coutinho?

On my radar. Fixtures aren't as nice as others, though, so really depends how he looks.

True about fixtures. I'm just thinking about it in terms of the "fallen stars" bit Wakey used to do - could be immensely worth it as he's probably undervalue now at 8.2. Think Alli was also undervalue at 8.2 - as was Jones at 4.6 or whatever - so there's definitely a case there for Coutinho to deliver some returns if he gets going quickly in the money stakes, which is a bit appealing this season as well as the fact that differentials are really fast and fleeting.

        1. Ha.

Definitely. I think the United game is too soon and so if I brought him in it'd be for Swansea, Chelsea and Hull, then reassess. Plenty of opportunity for points there I think.

If you've got ground to make up then getting in early on big targets can really help. Also a block defence can really propel your score if they tring a run of clean sheets together. chelsea and spurs are obviously the best but it depends if you can afford that or not.

Yeah I was thinking of also putting Toby in at 6.3 the week after I do Coutinho in or KdB. Think he'll be a nice differential, and a real scoring threat. Rose is a clear alternative, too.

For us Haz owners the right time feels more like GW23. Haz then gets two more games to reassert himself, then at that point Chelsea get 2 hard games and Spurs start the tasty run. 2FTs would be handy to then use the Haz money for an upgrade elsewhere, in theory...

Yeah I've gotten rid of Origi (me for Rondon) because I think his returns have dried up, and he's also dropping in value.

I'd probably be looking around those lines; I couldn't afford Defoe so I went Rondon for future WBA fixtures and differentiate from those with Phillips a bit, but I'd likely have brought him in if I could afford him.

Ake looks really dangerous - bargain at 4.4. I can't really bring him in yet - I have Pieters and the now non-ACON bound Nyom as my rotating 3rd defenders - but he's definitely on the monitor if one of those guys suddenly becomes droppable!

Sounds strange but I'm not keen on having Defoe either though. Would really like Lukaku in there but can't get the funds unless I downgrade Hazard/Eriken. So might keep Defoe in there untill Hazard played Hull and sell him afterwards

Ugh, I hate Lukaku. No rhyme or reason to his goalscoring, never bench never captain kind of option - don't like one of my strikers being in that category!

            • 9 Years

Think he is actually more predictable than Defoe. Defoe is relying on penalties a lot, Lukaku is just scoring against the easier teams, but blanks against the most easy teams then 😀 But yea won't captain or bench both, if Lukaku gets on pens again, he would be an amazing option for the next run of fixtures though

True. Bainesy is the better call tbh for Everton with the pen duty. Ideal to have a defender who occassionally gets you 10+.

Think I've had a lot of negative experiences with Kaku which have made me never want to own again haha

                7 years, 4 months ago

That might be the case indeed 😀 He is playing quite good this season, Everton are just not so consistent, started the season very well, but were absolute crap for a couple of games before the Southampton one.

Not so sure on Baines since Gueye is off to Afcon, I don't fancy many cs there.

Do people think that Alli will keep up his goal scoring run? His six goal run has come from 6 shots on target.

In the last 5 matches Eriksen has beat him for attempted assists 18 – 4, Shots 26 – 20, penalty area actions 44 – 18 and big chances created 3 -0.  Going forward he is definetly the better choice and now only 0.1 more expensive. Remember this game is about predicting future points and a lot on here are just blindly brining in Alli for the likes for Hazard, Firminio, Lallana etc when in two GW’s Spurs have City and away and Chelsea and Liverpool have HULL and SWA.

Question you should ask yourself is would you get rid of any of them for Eriksen. If the answer is no then maybe it should be no for Alli too. Just my thoughts. We have been bitten many times by chasing last weeks points. Hazard, Ibra and Sanchez come to mind.

There's no denying that Eriksen's stats are better, but Ali is just getting in those positions at the moment. In form, nailed, for a title contending team with great fixtures. Of course everyone is going to lump on. Eriksen a good option too, but Alli has been brilliant over a long period of time to be fair, not just these last few weeks. Hasn't he scored something like 20 goals in 52 PL games?

The issue is not Alli. Its the players people are getting rid of for him. He's a good option no doubt but that 2 goal a game ratio won't continue. Hes no better than hazard or Firminio for the next few fixtures.

I think he will continue to contribute, just not at a brace / game.

I didn't have any Spurs players, having sold Kane for Ibra and downgraded Walker, so it made sense for me to bring in Alli at 8.2 last weekend as a differential, knowing most would have Eriksen.

As you reference, Eriksen's stats do not merit dropping him! I have seen a few Eriksen -> Alli moves here and it's like wow, when was the last time you dropped a midfielder who has gotten 4 assists (and 2 10+ scores) in the last 3 gws lol. Double up maybe. Alli to keep getting goals and assists, but not at the rate he is now, but will blank more. Eriksen a consistent point scorer like Ozil was last year.

Wait and see with Tekkers. If I owned I'd be waiting til he's ruled in/out by BFS as they have a really good run of fixtures and a manager who will exploit the strengths of his team - in CPL's case, balls in to the big man.

Maybe hold this week, or maybe even bring Phillips in for Siggy tonight to get the rise, then move Giroud in for Tekkers if the big Belgian is ruled out?

Great news, got Nyom in at 4.3 and lucked out with the 8 points this week. He's looking really good with Phillips on that wing. Great value at that price given WBA's run of form.

Brunty an even better prospect now with Nyom playing, imo. OOP as Nyom will play LWB.

Yeah annoyingly I ditched few weeks back as thought he was off to AFCON. On the plus side I've got Brunt in now instead.

I'm thinking of doubling up on wba with brunt for those fixtures. Might get some mad scores if they keep cleanies and brunt is involved going forward, plus Nyom is a bap magnet!

Why no price rises for Ake, Costa, Baines, etc..

Clearly manual intervention here to suppress prices, due most likely to the 12 day stretch. Very frustrating though when on a WC

No, not at all. Just harder for price change website to calculate the percentages for rises/drops when WCs in play as they don't count towards the NTI/NTO.

He loves Sunderland. Said it himself. Knows how important it is for people's jobs for us to stay in Prem and said he wants to fight to keep us there. He's playing 90 mins every week at 34 and never rotated. If he went to west ham he'd be in and out of the team. Finally it's reported he has a clause in his contract that he can leave for free if we go down, so no need for him to worry about not playing prem football as someone would snap him up in the summer. So yeah, is that enough argument as to why he'd never, ever, hand a transfer request in.

Haz --> Alli, go double Spurs for the fixtures to try to catch some rank rises?

Then upgrade Grabban to maybe Rondon to cover WBA fixtures?

You need differentials if you wana go up the ranks, so maybe both those could work for you... just an idea haha

I'd still keep Hazard for the next 2, and ignore Aguero. Your focus should be on changing your 5th mid or 3rd striker imo. I suppose ditching Haz would free up some csh but I wouldn't wanna do that before the next 2 gameweeks. Capoue -> Stanislas? Even Grabban -> Crouch wouldn't be the worst idea. Either way, I wouldn't want to be playing Capoue every week.

    Heaton
    Alonso Pieters Valencia Smith(4.6)
    San(c)hez Eriksen Alli(v) Phillips
    Aguero Ibrahimovic

    Pickford(4.1) Origi(6.7) de Roon Collins(4.2)

    0.8 ITB

How does this look for 2x (-4) over the next two weeks?:

    This week:
Collins > Ake (play Ake instead of Valencia and double up Bournemouth defence versus Hull)

    Next week:
Smith, Origi > Brunt, Rondon (but means WBA triple up for their purple patch fixtures...)

Or just wait and do Collins > Brunt next week (assuming he doesn't rise...)

Thoughts much appreciated as always. Cheers.

Because of his drug allegation, professional behaviour (which has now been in the public both at LFC and PSG).

Why is this site so reactive??

5 weeks ago (5 WEEKS!) Spurs had a run of HUL, BUR, sot, wat, CHE. At that time many scrambled to get Kane in. Those a little smarter (not me) also brought in one of Walker or Rose knowing Spurs arguably have the best defence in the league (with Alderweireld back) and may get a CS or three. Those smarter still, also brought in Alli or Erkisen.

GW18 away to Southampton came around and we all cursed(Kane), dusted ourselves off (Alli) or patted ourselves on our collective backs (Eriksen). Alli then decided to introduce himself against another defensively solid side, Southampton. A brace and a clear warning call ahead of the hopeless injury ravaged Watford. Another brace followed.

That GW and the prospect of Aguero's return v Burnley prompted me to splash my WC immediately. DGW's could go to high water for all I cared. Not since the days of Lampard, Gerrard, Cahill (Adam, Nolan, etc.), have we had a central mid with such a goalscoring instinct.

Only now after scoring 3 consecutive braces are we seeing posts about him. More baffling still is those posts appear to be from would-be owners questioning whether he can keep it going? At 8m or so, I don't see any better options, he's stunning value.

But as a general point, let's see some more foresight. I'm seeing a sprinkling of Stanislas posts with Hull, Watford and Crystal Palace up next, and plenty mentioned Phillips last week (others had already noticed - he's been going up from 5.1m for a month).

Such a great site, let's keep the quality up.

Where did I say Kane wasn't a great pick? Why is all the chat about Alli AFTER he's scored 3 braces? It's a joke really.

Not if you are in a 3-4-3 structure. But it's an odd question to answer really because I have all three in my team and wouldn't want to lose any of them.

Then it's good. I don't think you need both Costa and Hazard for the next games (not after Hull anyway).

Personally I would rather switch Costa for Lukaku and keep Hazard but that's just my preference. I'd lose Lallana or Firmino for Alli and bring in Phillips for De Roon. But that's one more transfer of course.

Thanks for suggestions mate but won't be able to upgrade de roon to Phillips if I get rid of Firminio or Lallana. Only hazard out allows that. Quite set on the formation change. Now I am deciding between Eriksen or Alli...

People see players score lots of points and then want them in their team.

You want form and fixtures really - Alli's form was a bit patchy before his run.

We're all too reactive but you're the one who used their WC in reaction to two Alli braces and Aguero having a nice fixture?

I was annoyed that I hadn't made the move ahead of those 5 fixtures. It wasn't so rocket science as I could tell by my OR that tens of thousands must have done it already.

Look at the transfer in each week, between the bandwagons you'll see players getting 3-4k transfers in based on fixture alone. The difficult part is getting those players (that are doing well this year) to come on here and tell us their ideas. Naturally, they don't want to give up their advantage.

By WC'ing and getting Alli I thought there was a good chance he wouldn't score vs Chelsea, but I'm buying into the potential. We all know Alli plays of Kane and is provided for by Eriksen. Last season tells us he has an eye for goal. These aren't risky punts... they're proven.

And actually, in view of these comments I will say something more.

This site IS very bandwagony and points-chasing, even more so this season than before in my opinion. Often considered or reflective thinking is lost among the swarm of people telling each other to get the same 'hot' player or dump the same 'cold' player. Or, worse, is derided and or attacked by posters who take affront at their assumptions (certainties) being questioned.

Much earlier in the season I posted some research about Guardiola, his rotation policies and the way he treats strikers especially. I also suggested that losing Aguero voluntarily and having a no-City policy might be valid. And then I switched him out for Zlatan just before Zlatan started his goalscoring run.

I got a ton of vituperation for that. Quite nasty some of it. 3 months later some of those that were scornful then are now saying the same thing. 😕

I don't expect FFS to change in this regard so I have changed. I just don't post very much of that kind of stuff here now. It isn't worth the aggravation.

I'm probably not on here often enough to see some of the threads and discussion, but I can certainly imagine some of the abuse a no-Aguero argument would get!

I'm going without Ibra as I'm gambling on his FPL points to drop now, but I know it's futile trying to present that as a strategy. I just can't see past Aguero, Hazard and Sanchez. If I'd have got Costa cheaper then perhaps I'd be keeping him over Hazard, but I didn't and I'm not.

Stick to your guns and I'll be sure to look out for your posts

No, when you set up a blog you are representing yourself as an authority by implication. I am no authority. All I actually want is to offer my thoughts and considerations and read those of others in a non-adversarial climate. But I have given up on expecting that from FFS. So I don't intend to put myself in the position of having to defend myself for having ideas or for doing research that others can't immediately see the point of.

That's done and dusted. I don't offer articles any more and I am much more considered about any longer posts. That's just the way it is.

You want people to be more pro-active but question why Alli owners who are concerned about whether he can keep it up.

Maybe he has hit his purple patch, he almost certainly can't keep up the form he is in. Surely this is the pro-active movement you are seeking? It would be rather reactive to sit on him for ages and watch his form drop no?

I don't think Alli owners are questioning him in the slightest. Name me another midfielder at 8m who has the goal threat of Alli? I can't think of anyone except Pedro and Walcott and the latter is out injured.

I've brought in Pedro this week.

You just wildcarded and you already made a transfer with nearly a week to go before the next GW? To bring in Pedro nonetheless who is absolutely crap away from home and plays away next. You should be saving your transfers directly after a WC not spending them.

I should but I felt that Benteke was a punt too far when I could have afforded Giroud. Lallana > Pedro enables that move while setting me up for two Chelsea mids for Leicester and Hull.

I don't consider him crap in the slightest. I'm expecting Chelsea to bounce back.

    Afternoon All,

Any ideas what to do here?

    Heaton - Foster
    Alonso - Jones - Evans - Holebas - Amat
    Sanchez - Erikssen - Siggy - Puncheon - Fletcher
    Aguero - Ibra - Benteke

    0.0m and 1 FT

Obviously I need to wait for Benteke injury news, but beyond that I feel the squad needs at least a 3 or 4 player refresh for the upcoming fixtures.
