The Watchlist Updated – The Forwards

In our final analysis of the latest Watchlist standings following their festive overhaul, we now take time out to assess the latest movements among the forwards.

For those new to the site, the Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

There’s no change at the top of the rankings, with Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea’s Diego Costa retaining their spots at the summit.

Both players lead the forward standings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 123 points apiece, although Ibrahimovic is clearly the man in form.

Having climbed in value to 11.6 on the back of nine goals and four assists in his last nine starts, the Swede’s upcoming schedule (LIV, sto, HUL, lei, WAT) also gives him a slight edge.

There’s no doubt that Costa – whose FPL price has fallen to 10.7 following a recent one-match suspension – remains a reliable source for attacking returns, though, having blanked in only three of his last 13 matches.

Nonetheless, the Chelsea forward has only managed two double-digit hauls over that period, while the forthcoming fixture list for Antonio Conte’s side (lei, HUL, liv, ARS, bur, SWA) is mixed.

Ibrahimovic has penalties, free-kicks and has provided five double-digit returns, with a top score of 15. This compares favourable to Costa who has just three returns of 12 points so far and lacks dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal.

The Swede sat out United’s EFL Cup victory over Hull City on Tuesday but is expected to return to contention following illness for the Gameweek 21 collision with Liverpool.

Harry Kane sees his stock fall slightly this time around as a result of four blanks in six.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman has retreated under the shadow of midfield team-mates Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli over the past month, who are both considerably cheaper on the budget at 8.6 and 8.5 respectively.

Kane’s 16-point haul against Watford in Gameweek 19 provided a reminder of his explosive potential, though, and with spot-kick duties in the locker, the potential for double-digit hauls remains.

The festive period was very productive for Jermain Defoe, who registered another three goals, taking his tally to 11 for the season.

The Sunderland forward surges back up our rankings as David Moyes’ side prepare to take on Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace in the next four.

Still available at a meagre 7.8 in FPL, it remains a surprise that Defoe sits in just 25.4% of FPL squads, given that he is the joint-sixth highest point scorer in the game, with 113 points accrued.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud both enjoy rises, having flourished over the festive spell.

Lukaku returned to form with two goals and an assist in his last three starts, and looks a solid option as a second forward given his 9.5 price tag in FPL.

The Toffees also face one of the softest upcoming schedules (MCI, cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN) over the next six Gameweeks.

No forward scored more points than Giroud over the holiday fixtures, and having started the last three matches, the Frenchman’s form protects his pitch time ahead of an enticing run of fixtures (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL).

Theo Walcott is thought to be closing on a return following a calf injury, though, so away from home, there remains the prospect that Arsene Wenger will utilise the movement of Alexis Sanchez in the lone striker role.

Giroud is perhaps more suited to home fixtures to help break down a deep defensive line – the Emirates fixtures with Burnley, Watford and Hull City certainly look tailored-made for the Frenchman, then.

Man City’s Sergio Aguero suffers another drop in stock despite making a return from his four-match suspension with a goal against Burnley.

Aguero started from the bench against the Clarets, and with rotation an ongoing concern regarding all City players, it’s questionable whether the Argentine, priced at 12.8 in FPL, will provide better value than the likes of Ibrahimovic and Costa, who look nailed on to start every match for their respective clubs.

In addition, having seen him surrender spot-kick duties in Friday’s FA Cup thrashing of West Ham, confidence in Aguero suffers a further blow.

Crystal Palace’s Gameweek 20 clash against Swansea had been earmarked as a “make or break” encounter for Christian Benteke, following a run of four successive blanks.

But after being forced off at half-time with a shoulder injury, the former Liverpool striker failed to provide the goods, and as a result, suffers another damaging fall in our rankings.

The Eagles forward is expected to be fit to face West Ham United in Gameweek 21, but given that Palace will be without chief creator Wilfried Zaha, who has departed for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s no surprise that Benteke has been subject to further heavy FPL sales.

Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo is also heading in the wrong direction, with blanks against Burnley and Leicester City over the festive period denting our confidence in the Spaniard.

‘Boro’s short-term fixtures (wat, WHM, WBA) remain reasonably friendly, but with Aitor Karanka’s side still struggling for creativity, it’s likely that chances will continue to be at a premium for Negredo.

Two possible alternatives to the ‘Boro striker are West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon and Burnley’s Andre Gray.

Rondon did only muster an assist from the plum home fixture against Hull City last time out, but with the fixture list (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU) remaining favourable over the coming period, the 6.8-rated Venezuelan remains a viable option as a third forward.

Having reclaimed a spot in the Burnley side, starting the last five matches, Gray returns to the Watchlist this week after scoring four goals over the festive period.

The Clarets striker looks set to offer solid value at just 6.2 in FPL, although Sean Dyche’s side do face Southampton and Arsenal next, before kinder match-ups against Leicester City and Watford.

Doubt it, Alonso was subbed early last match, depends how serious his injury is as to whether he is dropped or has his mins managed in the coming GW's. I will be keeping both for now then reassess.

Who is the pick of the Spurs defenders? Is Alderweireld flying under the radar somewhat? Only 0.2 more than Walker and 0.3 more than Rose. Less likely to be rotated and not at risk of a suspension. I'd say Rose was the best option if he wasn't on 8 yellows but with that in mind I think I'm leaning towards Toby as my Alonso replacement when/if the time comes.

Agreed. I'm in an odd position of favouring Kosc and Toby over Bellerin and Rose at the minute when thinking about developing my def. Really like both as options, Toby will be absolutely nailed and gets bonus plus goal threat. 6.3 is a bit undervalue for him so if Alonso is out I might join you!

Toby has been disappointing this season. But with Europa and Cups, Rose might be a bit annoying to own at some stage so I'd go for Toby for a spurs def.

Last season Alderweireld outscored their fullbacks by some distance. However, this was partly down to rotation around the european games for Walker and Rose. I do remember those splendid passes from Alderweireld to Kane or Alli surging past the last defender, he had a major attacking upside.

Does he still play that distributing role?

Last season Rose had 109 points from 24 games (4.5 points per game), and Toby had 166 from 38 (4.4 points per game).

There has been far less rotation for the Spurs full-backs this season, and having dropped out of Europe they are now free to make the Premier League their top priority.

So far this season, Rose and Walker have both improved but Toby has gone backwards.

rose is the best spurs def at the moment. i am happy that i chose him over toby. he has given me scores of 5,6,4,11,9 since i bought him. he has scored more than many forwards and mids. i think even if he gets banned he should be kept

Rose and Walker are both strong options for our back 3 (shame about Rose's 8 yellow cards though), but I would not expect them to outscore any of a strong front 7 in a 3-5-2 formation (even if that front 7 includes Phillips and Stanislas, who are both cheaper) or in a 3-4-3 formation with Defoe as the 3rd forward.

Toby is overpriced on this season's form so far, but it is always possible that this might change.

I know United have been playing much better recently and picking up results, but has anyone else noticed how tragic their set pieces have been this season? Like really awful.

Their shooting also has been pretty bad, so many big chances missed. Could cost them in games vs the likes of Liverpool.

Amazing insight there. Like, really amazing. They're creating a lot this season and got to feel it will click soon. The fact they are winning games without being hugely clinical is a good sign for MU fans.

I'm not sure if it will communicate into more returns - I think it is perhaps indicative of 1) finishing ability 2) the nature of the chances.

is a hit required this week?

    Valdes (Jakup)
    Alonso Bellerin Holebas (Brunt Amat)
    Snodgrass Alli Sanchez Sig (Capoue)
Ibra Costa Deeney (HOW IS HE STILL IN MY TEAM??)

    0.1 ITB

Aware Deeney stands out like a sore thumb, every time I've thought about selling him with my FT, somoene else has got injured etc or he ends up having a decent fixture. Maybe -4 to Gray?

yeh mate, I am. Plan is to do Sigg / Snodgrass / Deeney to Stanislas / Gray / Coutinho over coming weeks. Tempted to do a -4 this week to get one done (Deeney out) then a further -4 the following week for the other two.

Playing for the cup this year as my OR is crap (Awful start and I messed around).

Up against a dead team this week. His likely lineup will be

    Cech (VC) (Boruc)
    PVA Bellerin* Stones* (Shaw, Bailly)
    Lallana Firmino Barkley (Mane, Lamela)
    Valencia* IBRA (C) AbelH*

Only 9 players going to start with 4 of those that are either rotation risks or a doubt. I've got Ibra and PVA from his team. I've also got Sanchez and had the captain on him, is it playing it to safe to captain Ibra just to keep him covered? WWYD?

    Heaton, Robinson
    Rose, Baines, Brunt, Chambers, -------

    -------,-------,-------

    A) Pieters, Hazard, Ibra, Defoe, Barnes

so guys, what is the best point in time to play Wildcard and Bench Boost, Triple Captain - should it be as follows:

    1. one gameweek prior to the DGW, play wildcard and assemble a squad all playing twice in the DGW (including bench)
    2. activate bench boost chip for DGW
    3. adjust squad to suit upcoming DGW (assuming two main ones, as per last season)
    4. play triple captain in second main DGW

    thoughts appreciated?

    thanks

no point planning your bb/tc order until fixtures clear. anyone who played BB instead of TCing aguero/sanchez in the first double last year probably missed out.

Can't really judge this yet but yes, that is what most people did last year.

I don't think it really produced the massive hauls most were hoping for (eg TC Lukaku etc)

    3. Pep says
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

Well this was the consensus last season but I think it worked out better for those who TC'd in GW34, WC GW36 and BB GW37.

By wildcards in 36, it means you only have to play out 3 weeks with a team set up for DGW as opposed to playing 6 fixtures with this team.

Have to wait and see the fixtures really to get know for sure

Yep. I went against the current and did this last year and it worked really well.

Whatever happens there will be a fight between those who are gong for BB in the first DGW and those who go for BB in the second. Both will claim victory, and both will cite examples that prove it.

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 11 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

Of course. But I think it comes down to more than just the 2 specific DGWs and which chip you use.
Also have to take a lot of other factors into account. The fixtures/blanks of the DGW players, how many transfers/hits you will need to get a good DGW team in the first without a WC, the fixtures between the DGWs etc. etc.
At this point I think it is too early to discuss which tactic seems best

    4. Licious Lizard
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

Too early to say yet when we don't know teams and GWs.

That being Said I Think the way you have it could be a good tactic. Another option is to use transfers leading up to the first DGW on getting in key DGW players without reaching 15. Using TC in 1st DGW and then using WC to prepare for second DGW, where you will use BB. Last year the second DGW came in GW 37, where it wasn't a big issue having many DGW players/selling good single GW players, as it only affected 1/2 GWs.
Again it is way too early to tell yet. Not sure getting in 15 DGW players is neccesarily the best choice either way though.

all good points - thank you...

say united and liverpool both progress to the final of the league cup it means that, united liverpool and city will all have a dgw, with fa cup replays for some prem teams already, we're looking at a few dgws developing

Yep it could be wonderful having as many blanks and DGWs as possible. Live the intricate planning of that period.

My team is below, and with doubts over Ake and Evans, seems like a good week to use AOA chip to bring in Phillips. Do you guys agree?

    Costa - Aguero - Ibra
