Moving Target

Moving Target – Lazar Markovic

Having already brought in Oumar Niasse and Omar Elabdellaoui on loan, signed Evandro from Porto and made Markus Henriksen’s loan move a permanent one, Hull City made their fifth capture of the January transfer window on Monday by completing a deal for Liverpool midfielder Lazar Markovic on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, with a lack of first-team football leading to his arrival at the KCOM Stadium.

Discussing his move with the local press, the winger is determined to prove the doubters wrong after struggling to settle on Merseyside:

“I hope that my actions will speak louder than words and I can prove myself to the club and to everyone in English football. I joined Liverpool when I was very young and have not yet had a long run in the side to show people what I am capable of. I hope to use this loan spell with City to prove myself in the best league in the world because I feel there is lots more to come from me.”

The History

Markovic joined the youth set-up at Partizan Belgrade aged 12, and progressed through the ranks to make his senior debut in May 2011.

The following summer, the winger signed his first professional contract with Partizan – a five-year deal – and quickly established himself as a first-team regular during the 2011/12 campaign, making 26 league appearances, which yielded six goals and six assists.

Markovic’s career trajectory continued in an upward direction, with seven goals and seven assists in 19 league matches in the following season.

Those performances put him on the radars of many European clubs, but it was Benfica who secured his signature ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.

Markovic’s one year in Portugal was a success, with the midfielder totalling five goals and five assists from 26 league appearances, while he also gained further European experience in both the Champions League and the Europa League.

In the summer of 2014, Liverpool stumped up £20 million to bring Markovic to Anfield, seeing off competition from the likes of Chelsea.

He struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, and only made 19 league appearances in 2014/15, registering just two goals and one assist, before being sent out on loan to Turkish side Fenerbahce for the 2015/16 campaign.

Markovic featured in 14 league matches for Fenerbahce, registering two assists, before his season was cut short by a hamstring injury.

Jurgen Klopp decided to send Markovic out on loan to Sporting Lisbon last summer, but after only making two league starts, the winger now finds himself heading to Hull for a third loan spell in just 18 months.

After representing Serbia at U17 and U21 levels, Markovic made his senior debut against Armenia in February 2012.

He has made 22 appearances for his country, scoring three goals.

The Prospects

While new Hull head coach Marco Silva was forced to use a 3-4-2-1 against Chelsea last weekend, the Portuguese manager is known to favour a 4-2-3-1, but until this point, has lacked the attacking midfield options – particularly after Henriksen picked up a serious shoulder injury – to adopt that formation.

But the signing of Markovic should help Silva turn to his preferred system, with the Serbian set to emerge as a regular starter for the Tigers.

Markovic’s career has stagnated over recent seasons, though, and it make take a few run-outs for the winger to firstly get his match fitness up to scratch, and then to restore the confidence that has been missing from his game since moving to England in 2014.

The 22-year-old was known for his blistering pace during his formative years, and Turkish sports magazine Fanatik aptly described Markovic as “Our Usain Bolt” upon his arrival in Turkey.

Injuries may have taken their toll but Markovic still possesses plenty of speed, and should still be able to deliver an end product via his natural dribbling and ability to play incisive through balls.

The final pass has been an issue for Markovic in recent years, but he’s still only 22, and a run of matches could help restore some confidence, and realise some of his untapped potential.

Silva has already begun transforming Hull into more of a counter-attacking side, with the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth conjured from just 39% possession.

Markovic could be perfectly suited in that sense, with his ability to transition quickly likely to be an important asset.

The Serbian is comfortable playing on either flank, and could offer a contrasting weapon to Robert Snodgrass, who is often more reliant on the quality of his final ball.

As we know from today’s news on Burnley’s accepted bid and Middlesbrough’s rival interest, Snodgrass looks poised to leave the club. Markovic is surely earmarked to help fill the void left by the Scot’s departure.

However, given his struggles over the past few years, there will be immediate doubts on Markovic’s ability to compensate for the loss of Snodgrass.

One issue that surfaced during his spell at Liverpool was his failure to adjust to the physical demands of the Premier League. In a Hull relegation battle, he’s certainly going to have to step up to the mark in that respect.

Markovic is priced at 5.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and is very unlikely to be considered until Hull’s testing fixture pass (mun, LIV, ars) and while there are still doubts surrounding his sharpness.

In addition, Silva intends to make further additions to his squad, with the possible funds from Snodgrass’ sale likely to be targeted at the midfield. The Tigers will surely need an additional schemer to make the difference in the final third.

In essence, it’s a case of wait and see as to whether Markovic can make the difference, although the early signs under Silva have certainly been encouraging.

Should Hull maintain their recent level of performance over the next few weeks, then the improved schedule from Gameweek 26 may well afford them the platform to supply us with a viable Fantasy asset with Markovic perhaps emerging as a factor.

    Hazard > KDB

    Talk to me.

City have great fixtures to turn their form around. He should gain confidence from his goal, plenty of assist potential and the BPS system loves him.

I own Kane and Walker so Ali + Eriksen not essential right now.

Thought about this myself.KDB has a few good fixtures until Chelseas turn for the better so he's a good place holder. Not sure if I can afford the two transfers to swap them at this time though.

No one is really essential. If I have Spurs attacking defence, lone striker and penalties covered then I'm only jumping on Ali/Eriksen as a fail safe incase Kane doesn't perform. KDB is a brilliant differential.

I like that move. Don't think many will jump on it, especially given his price and with a GW 26 blank possibly looming. In terms of a differential to help close a gap, that's all you can ask for if you are chasing. Worst case you don't see what you are looking for and ship him for basically any other midfielder or forward in the game in short order.

I did haz to KDB. Risky, but I am thinking City have to score a few goals over the next three. I have Kun as well so could be feast or famine. I have Ibra, Sanchez, and Alli so hopefully any fallout is minimal if it goes bad!!!

High TV/SV over my ML rivals is why I've shot ahead +50pts of 2nd +70 3rd and beyond and will be hard to catch. I'm +5m better TV than most. I was in 4th place GW 19. To say high TV isn't important to a good manager is ridiculous

Classic poker tactic. If you act strong, your bluffing. Act meek, and you have a hand

Stating TV/SV is BSC and doesn't matter means you are jealous yours is low, so you mean to devalue it

I think you lost the plot. It's not that TV/SV aren't helpful, it's that the aggressive attempt to increase them (usually through hits or risky transfers early in a week) might not be worth the added value.

I did 8 hits last 8 weeks rose from 50k to 4k. It wasn't for TV but that has risen. I lost TV when I sold Hazard 2 weeks ago. Some people hang on to players when they should get rid because their TV will drop. That's silly

Wouldn't say it's useless at all tbh, if you play the money game a little bit then u could potentially be 2/3M up on your rival, that's surely got to be worth something to the savvy fpl manager ..

Again, the point I was making had nothing to do with gaining TV through the normal course of making smart transfers, it was about people who make transfers for the SAKE of TV.

Right. And the sweet spot is somewhere in the middle: making smart transfers that result in both points and some added value that MIGHT prove valuable down the road, without taking too many risks (e.g., transferring in a player early in a week only to have them get injured in training) or hits in the process.

I've seen people who are bragging about a TV of 108 but they've taken 96 points in hits to do it and are ranked 500K. That doesn't seem worth it to me, even if it leads to a decent late run at a better OR.

I see your point but surely most teams are made up of the "staples", as in a few of the big hitters and a selection of gems if you can find them. If you have a higher TV then you can go for more big hitters thus increasing your points potential.
I think the key issue is timing, knowing when to get the gems on board and when to ditch them as they will naturally be streaky players..

There could be some advantages to starting in GW2 - you get to see the results and team selections from GW1 before choosing your initial squad, and you still have your first wildcard to use later!

OK, so it's not actually an advantage - but the disadvantage may be somewhat less than the average score for GW1, so it is perhaps not too surprising to find 6 teams that started in GW2 in the top 1300.

Seems right. Just a thought, why not take a chance and bench Phillips as u would be pitting him against Valdes when B'mouth can actually get a CS vs Leicester

This is exactly what I did. Playing Boro at their home pitch will be a hard nut to crack for Phillips. B'mouth is at home vs Palace so Daniels will get some attacking points.

Thoughts on whether to retain Alexis and/or Ibra if they end up having a blank in 28 (fairly likely) as well as 26 (now certain)?

~23m on the bench is a bit much. My current thinking is to sell Ibra and probably bench Alexis as I have more value tied up

I'd agree with that. I would not sell Alexis, but Ibra can be exchanged for Costa, Kane, or Lukaku easily enough dependent on form and blanks.

Thinking getting Alexis at 11.9m is a blessing for me. Will be getting rid while everyone will be holding on to him due to value.

How many points from Mane and Costa did you miss earlier in the season? You don't need everyone's points and Alexis is a lot of money to hold. All I know is he is almost certainly getting two zeroes and I have zero value tied in him. I'll take my chances.

Exactly, but Costa absolutely amassed points in the interim. You weren't bothered in the least because you probably had Lukaku. Sanchez will score 0, liv(A), 0 (again most likely), from GW 26 - GW 28. Can easily bring Barkley or whomever in for those 3 fixtures, and swap him back out later for Sanchez. I will be losing 0 value. I just don't see why I should retain. If you bought him at 11.0m, then it'll cost you a million to get him back. I don't have that worry.

Cost you half a million and Sanchez against Liverpool, great fixture to captain him. More pressing issues than dropping Sanchez..

You are not captaining him against Liverpool. Don't kid yourself. Yeah, I know Liverpool conceded three against Swansea but they also conceded 0 at home against City and United. I don't see what you're arguing about. What I said applies to my team only. 0, liv(A), 0 for 11.9m. No need for defensive swaps when I can do a proper midfield swap.

The issue, of course, is with the 2 transfers if you want him back in 29. It will leave you with 2 transfers less to sort out other issues, and there are always other issues, or will end up costing points for a hit. I personally dont see 26 as too much of an issue - I plan to only have Ibra and Sanchez then, and might transfer out Ibra if it feels right. 28 is going to be a bit of a nightmare though, it seems.

Transferring out Ibra or Sanchez. Same difference. Blanks will create issues regardless. Retain the non-playing big hitters and your issues are the cheap fodder you brought in for those weeks. Or build a stronger squad leading up to GW 26 and swap around the non-playing big hitters during their blanks. More than one way to play this I think.

KDB vs Ozil. I like where you are taking this. I'd probably do 1 since I find KDB to be one of the few Belgians that just laces up his boots and gets on with it with minimal drama. Ozil, I'm not sure where his head is at currently but could also potentially be a second half of the season stand out.

        Cheers Holmes!
Coleman scores last week and all he Baines love goes to Coleman. If Baines scores this week, it will switch back.

I have some restrictions to be honest, otherwise double up would have been easy-peasy decision 😛

I would prefer to have Coleman and Baines as both will probably get good score every now and then. Its just like Alli vs Eriksen which has no correct answer.

Wouldn't go Davies as he will probs go for scniedy.and Barry should go for idrisa. Robles at 4.7 is a shout, and wI'll be my other kweird with Heaton for aa few weeks while Heaton has hard away tin of something like, 6 away games outta 8. Robles has 5 good home gAmes coming. I've had Heaton form game week 1 though. I think mirallis get a hauled at 60 min mark. Depends on your team. I have lukaku so I got on holgate for amat and will do pickford to robles next week. I have rose and kane for spurs cover, have decent backs already,,,alonso, jones, brunt and I will have 3 everton next week for good fixtures. Holgate is a ggreat replacement for amat, as is robles for pickford. Depends on team. Baines lukaku Robles is my call

Cheers Nonprophet! Baines Lukaku Robles... hmmm...
I don't like to get a Keeper from a team that has a lot of potential in outfield players. But Robles is hot and I have Pick too. But how much would you gamble that it would only take one goal next week by Davies to send all fpl managers in a buy frenzy? That would be 4 weeks in a row without blanking.

I'd rather 3 West Brom if I'm honest.

I have 2 Everton and 2 West Brom and could easily have 3 of both

No Amat & Capoue down. Fine.

He's cheap as can be and was just bought so should be nailed. Best is the cheapest as bench fodder

I don`t want to use Everton spot with him. Probably will go with Williams,Baines,Lukaku or Williams,Barkley,Lukaku. Williams already in my team...

A lot of faith to put in Everton, but fair enough.

Dont who he is but anyway:

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Mark Lawrenson:"Absolutely, totally and utterly deserved. They always, always carried that goal threat. They played with so much pace, so much directness. Over the two legs they have totally outplayed Liverpool. They thoroughly deserve the Wembley appearance."

Last post was made 1hr back 😳

Meanwhile, Liverpool losing has made it lil bit tricky for GW26. Playing WC might work as I have some not so good performers. I can field something like this:

    Jakupovic
    Alonso, Coleman, Schlupp, Evans
    Alli, Eriksen, Lanzini, Zaha
    Luka, Diomande 😮

Not too bad, think a lot will be in a similar boat. Got a few transfers until then though?

4 changes away from that team, have 4FTs. So barring injuries/suspension my next few transfers will be:

        Ozil to Lanzini
        Sigurdsson to Zaha
        Anichebe to Luka
        Toby to Alonso

Oh ouch. Yeah would definitely consider wildcarding. Once we know the full fixtures of course. Think there are going to be less games moved than last season. I've got to sort my bench out as I've got 3 Arsenal and Ibra, Leko and Holebas aren't gonna cut it.

My 5 players will have blank on GW26 if United go through..
    Valencia, Ibra, Cedric, Giroud, Sanchez
Who to get out first 😀

Save FTs whenever possible. Who are on bench to cover them?
