Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Thursday

A spirited Hull City take Manchester United’s unbeaten record but it is the Red Devils who will face Southampton at Wembley after an entertaining EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Hull City 2 Manchester United 1 (2-3 on aggregate)

Hull City won the battle but lost the war as Manchester United did just enough to book their ticket to the EFL Cup final.

Marco Silva made seven changes from the team beaten at Chelsea and still produced strong evidence of the positive influence he’s brought to the Premier League strugglers since taking the job, overseeing a first defeat for United in 17 matches.

Jose Mourinho also made changes – five – to the team that drew with Stoke, although the side still included regulars Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic , David De Gea and Phil Jones .

Centre-half Eric Bailly, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, was not available but could be in line for a start in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

A Tom Huddlestone penalty after a foul, of sorts, on Harry Maguire put the Tigers ahead before Pogba’s second half equaliser looked to have put the tie to bed.

Hull refused to accept that fate and Oumar Niasse, given his first start, converted from a David Meyler pass late on to give the home side a deserved victory.

Silva took the opportunity to give second half run-outs to new signings Lazar Markovic and Evandro and also threw on in-form striker Abel Hernandez in a late bid to take the tie to extra-time.

The in-demand Robert Snodgrass (5.8), who has been sidelined with a muscle issue, wasn’t even in the squad, however, as he contemplates a number of offers to take him away from the KCOM Stadium, with West Ham the current favourites to land him following a medical today.

United’s fine unbeaten run might now be over, but it was the overall result that mattered, setting up a February 26 date with Southampton at Wembley.

That means no Gameweek 26 derby at Manchester City, with a double Gameweek 34 or 37 now likely. If it is the former, that would involve another away match, at Burnley. If the latter, then United would have to travel to both City and Spurs in a daunting double-header. Neither scenario is likely to satisfy Mourinho.

Throw in the resumption of Europa League duties just two days before the FA Cup fifth round ties begin on February 18, and even United’s squad will be stretched to the limit.

That could have repercussions for FPL’s current most popular player Ibrahimovic, who is owned by 43.3% of managers.

Mourinho has not been shy in using the Swede in all competitions this season, but such a punishing schedule will likely require rotation of even the biggest names. With United already missing Gameweek 26, FPL managers will have to decide whether to take that hit by sticking with Ibrahimovic and then hope he is saved primarily for league duties through a frantic February and beyond.

As for Hull, confidence is returning and the results are starting to come, as Silva pointed out post-match.

“That is three wins from our last three home games and when I arrived here, the team hadn’t won for two months. We need to continue this home form because it gives confidence to my players.”

Silva’s next foray’s into the transfer market will be crucial to their prospects, along with that home form.

But their next three league fixtures – United (again), Liverpool and Arsenal – suggests the time to look at any of their assets is from Gameweek 26 onwards when their schedule dramatically improves.

Eldin Jakupovic’s absence is somewhat troubling for his 20% ownership, with David Marshall recalled in goal on Thursday evening. Omitted from the matchday squad, it’s presumed that the 3.9 priced keeper was one of those rested with Premier League duties in mind.

Hull City XI: Marshall, Tymon, Maguire, Dawson, Meyler, Huddlestone, Clucas, Maloney (Goebel 64), Niasse, Diomande (Hernández 70), Bowen (Markovic 59).
Subs not used: Kuciak, Robertson, Elabdellaoui, Weir.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Carrick, Herrera, Pogba, Lingard (Rooney 79), Rashford (Fellaini 90+1), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Shaw, Fosu-Mensah.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Relegation battling options.

In recent seasons the January transfer market and threat of relegation have produced some exciting new Fantasy options.

Papiss Cisse's fantastic run to help Newcastle when he joined the Premier League was perhaps the best example of this.

Townsend's good form for Newcastle last season another.

Which of the current crop of relegation batters do you think will have a strong second half of the season - in Fantasy terms that is.

I'm still not sure about Hull - but I wonder if in good fixtures their defence may be worth revisiting. I think given their fixtures at the moment they may be best avoided.

Zaha at Palace could be good. Sigurdsson and Llorente at Swansea too. Plenty of potential there.

Great question jonty. I personally think Oumar Niasse has great potential, i monitored him through the entire season that lokomotiv had in europa league i think 2 years ago. One of the first scorers and has amazing explosiveness. If he starts firing again he ll be crucial to hull's survival. Another one i think that is off the radar and will be interesting IF signed is Jese Rodriguez. Great dribbler but he was wasted at PSG and i wonder why that is. Many more interesting cases though. We shall see...

this. Van Aanholt will add some good attack down the right too, With Zaha, PvA and Townsend (and possibly Remy) moving defenders every which way, Benteke will enjoy more space. Can only be a good thing!

Gabriel Jesus could be of great help (very much needed) to Man City. if he gets enough playing minutes he can be decisive to turn things around for the Citizens.

Siggy and Llorente are essentially Swansea's only hope of staying up. Likewise with Defoe at Sunderland. Zaha might be a big one for Palace, PvA and interesting option. Keeping a sly eye on Hernandez at Hull.

gotta be looking at attacking returns.
None of the defences look like they are going to offer much.

Siggy will contribute and Carroll could actually be the enabler that gets him more attacking returns.

Hull are going to battle but don't see any FPL prospects there.

Palace could be PVA or Schlupp depending on which one ends up OOP.

Still has to be value in a Boro defender.

Most likely the value players will be those that are yet to sign!!

    Alonso, Baines, Brunt
    Sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Philips, Stanislas
    Kane, Ibra
    Pickford, Cedric, Ake, Anichebe

0.1 in the bank and 1 FT.

I had planned to do Hazard to Eriksen but with Sanchez, Ibra and Cedric ruled out of GW 26 and Anichebe and Ake out as well i may have to do a more boring transfer? Cedric will be out of my team before GW26 but plan to hold onto Sanchez and Ibra.

    Raymond Verheijen @raymondverheije
Liverpool manager Klopp has run his players into the ground during pre-season. Consequently, players cannot perform during an entire season. Most people in football have opinions on hindsight. Liverpool crumbling in 2nd half of season was already predicted multiple times in August

Agree/disagree? Time to avoid LFC altogether?

      I don't agree.

Liverpool have had a tough January but they've been missing a number of important first team players in Mane, Matip, Coutinho, Henderson, Clyne.

The truth is that Liverpool just don't have a big enough squad to cope with those players out, most teams would struggle with thier main men out to be fair.

    3. pompeyfan
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

totally disagree. If they can't last the pace it could also be because they weren't in good enough shape before.

His Dortmund team managed it ok, and they were playing in more competitions.

Dortmund had the winter break though! They dont look as dynamic but could be mearly missing mane who made the team look better! But they look leggy atm on the eye test

Winter breaks in Europe don't involved the players kicking back and sitting at home. There are friendlies arranged, warm-weather training camps, etc.. The fitness of the players is kept up.

Also leagues with winter breaks do play a decent number of games. Even if PL teams play say 4 more games for season, that isn't a statistically significant increase.

it's easy to say that from over there. Try watching some. Caught RB Leipzig vs. Ajax for example recently, that was pretty intensive and was a full strength lineup. This is not untypical from my experience.

Agree. They've looked tired in most games over the last two months. Firmino runs himself into the ground every game but the zip is no longer there. Mane returning and Coutinho getting sharp should improve things, though.

Hey statsheads. I’m not sure if this has been posted before but the people behind Freakonomics did a podcast called, ‘How to Be Less Terrible at Predicting the Future.’ Predicting the future, or forecasting as it is also referred to in the podcast, is what this game is fundamentally about. It does briefly also mention Fantasy (American) football. Link is below. Perhaps by listening to this you can make better FPL decisions.

There are two key learnings in my opinion that can be applied to FPL. One, there are methods found through large scale forecasting studies, which make for better forecasting. Some of them are listed below as compiled by Prof. Philip Tetlock. They’re a bit abstract without the context of the podcast but hopefully people can see how they relate to this game. The other learning is not to listen to sports pundits.

    http://freakonomics.com/podcast/how-to-be-less-terrible-at-predicting-the-future-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast/

1: “Triage. Focus on questions where your hard work is likely to pay off.”
2: “Break seemingly intractable problems into tractable sub-problems.”
3: “Strike the right balance between inside views and outside views.”
4: “Strike the right balance between under- and overreacting to the evidence.”
5: “Look for the clashing causal forces at work in each problem.”
6: “Strive to distinguish as many degrees of doubt as the problem permits but no more.”
7: “Strike the right balance between under- and overconfidence, between prudence and decisiveness.”
8: “Look for the errors behind your mistakes but beware of rearview-mirror hindsight biases.”
9: “Bring out the best in others and let others bring out the best in you.” FFS forum anyone?
10: “Master the error-balancing bicycle.” You can’t become a superforecaster by reading training manuals. Learning requires doing, with good feedback that leaves no ambiguity about whether you are succeeding or failing.

Lukaku's returns last 2 Season have been due to presence of Great Crossers like Delofeu and Bolasie.
Really feel he isn't worth the money in their Absence.
    Thoughts?

in a 3-5-2 ,they are getting plenty of opportunities to get forward. He also has Mirallas and Barkley playing much closer to him, so he won't be as isolated

Coleman, Baines, Barkley all likely to deliver quality in the first third.

Lukaku also more than capable of scoring with his his feet, too often seen as a target man

He is obviously Capable of Scoring with his feet.

How do you explain his 17 goals in a poor West Brom side, was that down to West Brom's exceptional crossers too? Lol.

Also, to be honest, I wouldn't say that Bolasie or Delboy are particularly good at crossing as far as wingers go.

      1. Klopp For The Kopps 😆

I was talking about last 2 seasons in which most of his Goals have been from Crosses by Del and Bolasie.
Without them, I feel he isn't worth 9.6.

        1. nobwak

Yeah but do you have stats to back that up, or are you just guessing? lol,

Lukaku scored 18 league goals last season - Del got 8 assists in the league last season. So assuming that all 8 of Dels assists were for Lukaku, which they probably weren't, there's STILL a whole 10 goals that Lukaku scored without Del. Bolasie didn't play for Everton last season so he's irrelevant there.

This season, Del has zero assists and Bolasie has 4. Lukaku has 12 goals, assuming that all 4 of Bolasie's assists were for Lukaku, he still has 8 goals unassisted by either Del or Bolasie.

So actually, most of his goals were not assisted by those 2 players... some of them were, but in fact, MOST of them were not.

I seem to remember that all 4 of Bolasie's assists were for Lukaku goals this season, so there is a little correlation. But it's probably more accurate to say it seems that Bolasie needs Lukaku, but not necessarily the other way round.

I think you're right to be honest, although one of the goals he assisted for Lukaku was THAT Lukaku goal, the one that was kind of Bolasie's goal really because Lukaku didn't really touch it.

One-Third of the Assists is quite a Lot TBH.
All of his 12 goals need not be assisted by someone so considering that it might even more than One-Third.
Agree or Not, their Absence does Dent his Appeal maybe not by a Lot.

Disastrous season, trying to claw back some dignity:

    DDG - Jaku

    Baines/Coleman - Rose/Walker - Brunt - Holgate - Yoshida

    Eriksen - Alli - Alexis - Phillips - Carroll

    Ibra - Lukaku - Giroud

    (0.1 ITB)

Please give any suggestions/comments on how to improve?

DDG is a waste of money and may blank twice in 3 gw's from gw 26-28, seriously 6 is his limit, he is just not busy enough to get those doubl figure scores like heaton foster pickford etc

Better to get 2 mid price keepers that get save points and rotate well.

    Foster (Jaku)
    Alonso Jones Williams (Amat* Holebas*)
    Sanchez Alli Eriksen Phillips Stanislas
    Aguero Ibra (Diomande*)

Is it worth saving the FT even my bench is kak or should i address it now? Have the exact cash to do Holebas to Rose and can then alternate 352/442....or should I start to stock up for teams not blanking GW26/28?

Crystal Palace transfer business has been
prettty peculiar, Interesting and a little
    baffling so far

left backs and Left wingers in the squad
    now.

    -PVA
    - Schlupp
    -Souare
    -Fryers
    -Zaha
    -B.Sako
    -Townsend

with Players like Ward and Delaney thay
    can also play Left backs

More I see now players like Left backs are
signed first by seeing them as attacking
threat rather than if they can defend or not.
PVA Schlupp have been signed on good
fees plus Zaha is a shoo-in in the team
and maybe they even sign Robbie Brady
PVA and Schlupp bombarding forward will leave lots of space at the back and may punish Palace more
