Versus – Coleman and Baines

In retrospect, it seems that a lacklustre defeat at Watford in Gameweek 15 has been the making of Everton’s season.

Since that 3-2 loss at Vicarage Road, the Toffees have finally clicked under Ronald Koeman, chalking up five wins and a draw in the subsequent seven league fixtures.

The Dutchman’s decision to roll out a wing-back system has been key to their recent ascent.

Everton have chalked up four clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks, bringing both Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines onto our radars as the Merseysiders offer the perfect combination of form and fixtures for the foreseeable future.

Identically priced in Fantasy Premier League at 5.6 apiece, and with clashes against Stoke, Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, West Brom and Hull City over the next seven Gameweeks, we assess the Toffees duo’s recent displays as we look for the most appealing route into Koeman’s much-improved rearguard.

Also wouldn't be anywhere near top without huge referee helping hands this year. 6 points gifted against Burnley alone.

          😆

Apart from the soft red card, and the blatant penalty not given for a foul on Mustafi.

Also the wrongful pen from the first Bourenmouth game, the offside winner against Man City, unlucky pen against Stoke, the dive from Dembele against Spurs, the soft red card against Swansea.

          But okay,

Thoughts on the Coleman/Baines double up then? Assuming we may want an Everton triple up for the blank week, do both their premium defenders offer more than one of their midfielders?

Or maybe the more squad-friendly Holgate and Funes-Mori are better options for a double up?

No, I don't know why this is a debate

Presumably because Coleman is better from open play? How many penalties will Baines realistically get over the next few weeks?

This is smart by Wenger. It could backfire horrendously if he were to get injured, but he's your star, he hates sitting, he might need convincing to stay at the club, etc. I say do what you have to to keep him happy.

Including letting him come on to get an assist in a game that's essentially over.

      Agreed.
Against a PL club it's fine. Would be worried if it was against a scrappy lower league team and an even score.

Embiid wasn't robbed, though. Lacks game time.

Haha. Nice on the Embiid reference 🙂

I'm a biased Sixers ticket holder, but he's been incredible. They are the best defensive team in the league (statistically) with him on the court, and the 26th worst when he's not playing. And it's a game for the fans. Paul Millsap or Embiid? Seriously?

Last night, Embiid went for for 32 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 28 minutes. Millsap went for 4, 4 and 1 in 23 minutes.

Oh in terms on production per minute (or even game) he's a shoo-in and a starter.

Problem is it's not only a game for the fans. Ask Anthony Davis who lost 24 million dollars because he wasn't an all star last year (with 24/10 and some gravy on top). As long as potential earning and legacy status comes with the all star nod, you got to show up for work day in and day out to earn it.

He'll be all nba though, hopefully.

Cant wait to see Simmons, though. I think it's him and Embiid eventually, and man do they have talent in the front court!

Yeah, this has been a fun year. Embiid's singular greatness has forced the "process" to move along a lot faster than fans (and probably even management) anticipated.

Adding Simmons, their own pick (or a swap with the Kings if the Kings pick is better) and the Lakers pick (as long as it's not top 3) in a guard-heavy 2017 draft is really going to set them up for years to come. As someone who attends the games in person, it's a joy. Last night, the building was as loud as it's been since Iverson played there.

I'm worried the Lakers will tank. They should tank for sure, but it's not like they've been acting clever lately from a . They're already bottom in the West. A 4th pick would be amazing in this draft indeed.
