Captain Sensible – Gameweek 23

We brace ourselves for a busy next few days, as the first of two rounds of fixtures within a week gets underway this evening.

As usual, we roll out our pre-Gameweek members article, assessing the main Captain Poll contenders and taking a look at the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings before suggesting a differential or two to help with your armband dilemma.

The Captain Poll

It’s a case of déjà vu when it comes to our latest Captain Poll as Alexis Sanchez once again leads the way ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with Watford.

Over 47% are backing the Chilean to get amongst the points against a defence with a single clean sheet in 12 Gameweeks. A late penalty against Burnley last time out means he’s scored or assisted in all but one of the last ten Gameweeks.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is rated as the best of the rest with 21% of the votes cast.

Set to host a Hull defence that’s conceded more goals on the road (26) than any other side, the United striker has been almost as consistent as Sanchez, proving points in nine of his last 11 league outings.

Harry Kane has persuade 10% of voters as Spurs make their way to struggling Sunderland.

Having recovered from an ankle injury in time for Tuesday’s clash, Kane has racked up six goals and two assists in his last five fixtures and faces a Black Cats backline that’s conceded at least twice in each of their previous five.

With the three big-hitters proving so popular, there is a number of differential options on offer.

Dele Alli earns just 4% votes, yet has eight goals in six to his name ahead of that trip to Wearside. Team-mate Christian Eriksen, meanwhile, has six double-digit hauls in the last ten Gameweeks.

Over at the Emirates, Olivier Giroud has netted in four of the last five Gameweeks yet, like Eriksen, has been picked by just 1%.

Sergio Aguero collects a mere 2% of the votes for City’s trip to West Ham, with concerns still surrounding the knock that saw him miss the weekend FA Cup win at Palace.

Everton’s trip to Stoke has convinced just 1% to look at Romelu Lukaku. The big Belgian rolls up to the bet365 having netted in three of the last five Gameweeks.

Diego Costa’s popularity (1%) is surprisingly low for Chelsea’s trip to Liverpool, given that he’s scored or assisted in 16 of 20 league appearances. All three of his 10+ points returns have arrived on the road.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I don't mind the factual bit, but telling the players to "plan carefully" is a bit too much IMO.

FPL shouldn't be giving advice to players. It'd be like a poker site tweeting how best to play certain hands.

"plan carefully" is hardly groundbreaking advice 😆

It's more like a poker site tweeting that you should assess the table before you make a bet.

I didn't say it was groundbreaking advice (I said it was "a bit too much"). I would argue that your example isn't really ok either, but not humungously fussed either way!

My main hope this isn't the first tweet that will eventually evolve into "you should pick x player as they don't have a blank in x gameweeks time" type-advice

Websites are fine to do that - I'm saying FPL probably shouldn't. What next? FPL could just replicate the FFS site and kill FFS.

What I don't get is that you have done tons of work and shared your research on FFS regarding DGWs and so on and then they go and employ someone who doesn't post on FFS to write articles about that subject, just because he created a pretty spreadsheet (which is actually misleading anyway). 😕

As it happens, the article is also misleading and contains some pretty dubious advice. But that suits me fine. Managers should think these things through for themselves. Those that follow the spoon will have to accept the medicine that the spoon gives them.

If you are good at FPL you shouldn't be worried about this. Realistically how many casuals are actually going to plan for the blanks? It basically starts after tonight's deadline passes. FPL managers still have to make good transfer choices etc.

In fairness its probably easier to google 'Fantasy football" and end up here reading pages and pages of advice. Its the age we live in, information on everything is available. Its what you do with that info makes the difference.

How often do you read every twitter post of someone you follow?

People need to stop worrying about casuals and focus on their own game

Bit of an over-reaction? There's still a fair bit of planning and effort to be made.

Unless you reckon that by reading this tweet, a "casual" is instantly in the know about everything surrounding the next few games weeks?

If it spurs them into doing some research and making some informed decisions, I don't see the issue. People choose to apply as much of themselves into every aspect of everything in their life. This is their choice, there's nothing to say that it entitles them to do better than others.

I just don't get the saltiness.

Best striker for 6.4 or less? Ideally would be Carroll but rival has him and I'm chasing. Really Gray or Llorente, gut saying Gray. Any other ideas?

I think Carroll stands out as the best, even if your rival has him. Llorente if you really want someone different. Gray should do well vs Leicester but he has 5 away games in next 7 and Burnley are the worst away side in the league.

Yeh noticed that but look at the teams they are playing away: Watford hull Swansea. All poor defences, their form on the road will surely improve with those games?

I'd like Carroll but our teams are too similar as it is. Think I'll take my chances without him and hope for niggling injury or him going out of form

A blank GW is when you sell Sanchez and Alli for Stanislas (2pts) and Barkley (2pts).

A NOT blank Gw follows the week after and is when you think "why the f did I do that"

Some teams will have no fixture during GW26 (similarly in GW28 and GW34 most likely).

It follows therefore that players from those teams won't score points in those gameweeks.

The 'missing' fixtures will be rearranged for later in the season meaning that those blanks will have corresponding 'double' gameweeks whereby some teams play twice. This gives some players the opportunity to rack up bigger scores through making two appearances in a single FPL GW.

I'd recommend reading this article: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/01/30/navigating-the-blank-gameweeks/ It explains it all better than I ever could.

Kane captain is certainly tempting. But captaining him over Sanchez means praying for a Sanchez blank as his EO % is so high. Really cba with that

I captained Sanchez over Kane for this reason when Kane scored his hat trick.. regretted it!

Do you reckon then Aguero > Kane for free worth it? OR just hold on to Aguero?

Friend being injured is a massive setback this week, with Holebas already out and Amat being benched for woeful Swansea.

    A. Keep FT and play 10 men
    B. Holebas out for < 5.0 def
    C. Amat out for < 4.5 def (Holgate? Yoshida?)

My other defs are Azpilicueta and Brunt, Foster Heaton in goal.
