Top 5 Career Hall of Fame Analysis -Gameweek23

Gameweek 23 sees two of the career top five Hall of Fame (HoF) achieve their highest FPL rank of the season.

It also saw a  third, Steve Poulsom, achieve his highest FPL rank (194,665) since Gameweek 7, which is all the more impressive given that he was at a season-low FPL rank of 845,911 as recently as Gameweek 17.

Aside from FPL ranks improving, the other recent trend is that the number of transfers and hits has significantly dropped. In Gameweek 21 all teams made a transfer and overall took 16pts worth of hits, down to only two teams making transfers this Gameweek and no hits.

This article focuses on the latest transfer moves and strategies of these boffins of Fantasy Football, who grace the top five positions of this site’s career Hall of Fame. Note this  does not include this season’s results. Members can see the latest top 5 via the Live Hall of Fame update.

For this article I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

Lowest rank in the last three seasons for any of the top five4,324
Highest rank in the last three seasons for any of the top five49

CAPTAIN

*(c) GW23: Sanchez x5

Sanchez yet again proved the most popular captain choice, as he has done 35% of the time.

He delivered 8 pts this week in what was a low scoring week and averages 13.6pts when chosen as captain for the season. Aguero follows in popularity having been chosen 28% of the time, averaging 14.9pts as captain.

How important is it to get your captain choice right?

Total Captain Points as % of Overall Score = 23% (average for the top 5)

By that measure it is fairly important with nearly a quarter of the top 5’s points coming from their captain.

TRANSFERS

Hits takenNo hits taken, three teams made no transfer
Players inColeman x2, Alli
Players outLallana, Cedric, Amat

In the Coleman vs Baines debate the top five clearly favour the former, he is now in two teams whereas Baines doesn’t feature at all.

Attacking statistics favoured over penalty duties it seems. It is also worth noting that penalty-taker Hazard does not feature in any of the teams either – perhaps penalty-taking duties aren’t that important after all?

Coleman’s assist brought a modest return for both fourth placed Steve Poulsom and fifth placed David Meechan who both drafted him in. However Spurs’ Alli did not provide an immediate return.

As noted last week using ‘Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers’ is not necessarily the best way to measure transfer success, as transfers are often made with a series of fixtures in mind. Nonetheless it provides a starting point as we often hope for an immediate return.

This week I’ve added Squad Value to the Transfer Table, I find it interesting to compare two contrasting approaches this year – Number one Ville Ronka has predictably taken no hits this year and has a modest Squad Value of £104m whereas third placed Peter Kouwenberg has taken 60pts worth in hits however he has gained a Squad Value of £106.7m.

Will the extra budget be significant as the season progresses? Kouwenberg, despite the hits, narrowly leads Ronke in the overall FPL rankings – 19,452 vs 22,068 – so this will be an interesting battle to follow.

Patient vs Stubborn

– How long do you hold onto a player who is not scoring well in FPL?

Below is a table of stubbornness. Looking at the outfield players who have played more than 10 GWs and have low average points when they’ve played/started. It’s not surprising that Ville Ronka has a few players who’ve scored quite poorly given the patient way he plays the game.

Players whose names are in bold currently feature in their teams.

Palace’s Christian Benteke finally delivered for Ronke this week, even so he still averages only 3.8 pts when he’s played for Ronke’s side. However with Palace’s encouraging performance this week and a decent set of upcoming fixtures I can’t see him being transferred out soon. The same goes for Everton and WBA defenders Ashley Williams and Gareth McAuley.

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic appears once on the list for fourth placed Steve Poulsom, which perhaps goes some way to explain why his FPL rank has been so low for much of the season as he kept faith with the big Swede during his goal drought.

PLAYERS

Players in 4 teamsAlonso, Alli
Players in 3 teamsEriksen, Phillips, Stanislas, Amat, Foster, Heaton, Pickford
Attacking players under 6mPhillips x3, Stanislas x3, Anichebe x2, Barnes, Fletcher, Capoue

Spurs’s midfield duo feature promininently with Dele Alli now in four teams, closely followed by teammate Christian Eriksen in three. Sanchez and Ibrahimovic remain the only players to feature in all five teams with Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso the most popular defender, featuring in four teams. WBA’s Matt Phillips and Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas feature in three teams each, predicted by the top five to be the value picks under 6m so far they have failed to deliver since being drafted in recently.

FORMATION

Three teams3-4-3 formation
Two teams3-5-2 formation

This week saw a switch back to favour a 3-4-3 formation instead of 3-5-2, over the course of the season 3-4-3 has been favoured 66% of the time by the career top 5 HoF, with 3-5-2 second with 21%. Interestingly Ronka has not used 3-5-2 at all this season, whereas the current best FPL ranked team, fifth placed David Meechan has used it on 13 occasions.

Joining Ronka and third placed Kouwenberg in shunning 3-5-2 is second placed Martin Rattiner, who has an expensive front three of Diego Costa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero. With those three big hitters faltering a little recently it’s no surprise to see him slip slightly in the FPL rankings – from 13,561 in Gameweek 20 to 49,856 this Gameweek. An explosive return up the rankings is of course possible at any moment with those three!

Jay Egersdorff, who has moved from 15th to second place in the HoF this season, and for one Gameweek usurped Ronka at the summit, told FFScout in an interview that 3-5-2 is proving the better shape with out of position midfielders performing well as strikers and crucially because midfielders earn more points for a goal. However with Liverpool’s midfield assets not reaching the high standards of earlier in the campaign and new arrivals like Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus, will 3-5-2 continue to be the favoured formation?

*from GW6 onwards

Only one of the 5 qualified for the cup (#5), they went out in GW19.

They all still have their wildcards and the only chip that has been played is AOA.

The improvement continued this week with both Ronka and Kouwenberg achieving their highest ranks of the season so far, though David Meechan and Marlen Rattiner have stalled slightly recently.

Will the low number of transfers and lack of hits continue? Will this new patient approach reap rewards? (well new for everyone apart from Ronke!) Tune in next week to find out folks!

I apologise if it freaks any of them out seeing their moves analysed in this way, but for us lesser mortals I hope it provides insights on how to play the game successfully.

Cheers for this. Looks like patience and dullardity is kicking in nicely for these vets.

Thank you Jonty! Haha - dullardity? a bit of confirmation bias kicking in there perhaps 😉 I mean who knows, it could also be the fact that after a few recent good weeks the managers feel less need to make transfers - if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? Saving a transfer if there is nothing pressing seems like a wise move. Ronke is obviously patient, which doesn't mean he's not averse to the early transfer, however everyone else seems to have a more balanced approach to transfers and hits. I'm really interested to find out if the rate of transfers and hits drops from here to the end of the season.

I like this article. The only thing I might add is actually posting their current teams. (I know I can search them individually but it doesn't make much sense to me not to just list the players they have directly in the article.

        😀

Yeah I know, but it would be helpful (for me at least) if I could do the comparison myself with it all in one view.

Kind of like the way the first Scout Picks article has a simple table showing the different players selected

I agree, I really like the layout of that article. I could try it, I felt that with five teams it's a lot of information on the page, I've so far preferred to summarise the players in the teams, trying to see the mainstays of each, identifying the players that make up the spine - I quite like the top 50 summary on FPL Statistics for instance: http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/Home/Top50 I mean anything to save me from typing out 'Ibrahimovic' five times!

Cheers, TM. I'm back on the hits trail again this week, influenced mainly by team value, which I guess has swayed me too much this season. And Coleman in was also the transfer I was considering but left it till this week (now made).

Thanks v much, had this grab for years but then someone who posts more regularly had the same idea. Haven't been coming up with many cunning plans this year unfortunately! Ali instead? I'd go with Lukaku before Ibra but then I have to gamble a bit more in my position so maybe you're better going for the consistency?

          Coleman not Baines?

You're welcome, congratulations on achieving a season high FPL rank!

You're hit taking makes me think of those Pringles adverts - "Once you pop, you can't stop!" I mean, they are pretty addictive 🙂 Good luck with the transfers, really interested to see how you put that extra value to use. I got Coleman in myself last week, I always feel reassured when I see you guys making the same transfers 🙂 I now have Coleman and Baines, possibly overkill, or at least not the best idea having two defenders from one team, but I couldn't decide between them. I'm guessing you might have got rid of Giroud too? Have you been tempted by Aguero or Gabriel Jesus? Or too much uncertainty in their line-up?

Cheers, gents. Cam, still on Lukaku at the moment but we'll see. Coleman v Baines is an impossible call at the moment, but yeah, Coleman.

TM, Giroud to Lukaku. Also Lallana to Siggy (annoyingly close to doing that before Siggy's haul). It's now a week early but my hand was forced by price changes and future plans. At the moment, I'm only bringing in GW 28 players and I'm a little surprised how unfussed many players are about this.

Why what's happening GW28? Realise there's a blank GW26 but will start making sure of full starting 11 for that week from now.

No blanks 28 yet but likely any Prem team which beats fa cup oppo (lower league) will have games rescheduled. Plus their league opponents obviously.

Very sensible buys, but I'm surprised you took a hit for a price change at this stage of the season when you already have good team value - do you think you will reach a point in the season when you won't take a hit to gain a price rise? After your second wildcard perhaps?

Well played sir - great call Lukaku captain, making the transfer before the haul for once this year! I only wish I'd read your post before the deadline, I may well have brought in Lukaku as well! Woulda Coulda Shoulda... you were the only one in the top 5 to captain him, you are now the highest ranked FPL player out of the career top 5! Congrats!

Thanks, TM. Re the price chase, it's because I wanted to get Carroll in as my next change and wouldn't have been able to afford that if I'd waited on the others, so I don't think I will be chasing value generally (as opposed to for a specific plan).

That said, I'm now considering Hazard for Sanchez after this week because Arsenal obviously have blanks and have been abject. Also, Ashley Barnes, despite being on my bench, does seem to have offer some threat as my 8th attacker.

Probably wait and see and hope City don't go mad (I know Cam needs a haul from Aguero, for starters!)

Thanks 🙂 It's interesting because of the variation in transfer strategy and formations. Although I've been surprised that 'best practice rules/patterns' haven't appeared. For instance looking at the 'Immediate Points Gained From Transfers Minus Hits' you wouldn't necessarily expect Ronke and My Pretty Pony to be doing quite a bit better in FPL than Steve Poulsom, who has gained more points than both by that metric (138 compared to 119 and 111). I'm looking at that 'table of stubbornness' as I've called it, and thinking it's interesting that Ronke has a few players on there who are fairly low value - McAuley, Williams, Benteke. I presume he feels it's not worth a hit to get rid of them (although I would probably keep them now!), why waste a hit on low value players? Much more sensible to make sure your high value players are performing as they are more likely to bring you points. I'm finding it really interesting writing the articles, and something must be rubbing off on me - my current rank is 24K and I'm trying to beat my career best rank of 50K at the end of the season, so I'm very happy with that. I think on a very basic level I find it reassuring knowing which players are popular in the top 5, this has helped me to build my team for sure. Look forward to analysing your team next year too 😉

Hey, steal away!! great site sir, extremely useful, thank you! I have one feature request, not sure if this would be possible but it would be cool to be able to enter a sequence of IDs and have that function like a mini league in your Live Leagues page. For instance enter the IDs for the top 5 and create a kind of top 5 mini league to get more useful comparison data. Thank you 🙂
