Scout Report – Luka Milivojevic

After signing Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick van Aanholt earlier in the transfer window, Crystal Palace completed their business with the capture of Serbian international midfielder Luka Milivojevic from Greek side Olympiakos for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth around £11 million.

Speaking to the club’s official website prior to the weekend loss at home to Sunderland, Palace boss Sam Allardyce provided an insight into how Milivojevic may fit into the Eagles midfield:

“He’s a defensive midfield player with great ability with both feet and is a really good passer. I’m not sure that Yohan and Punch’s roles are in that sitting position but this lad loves to play there and sees it has his main position. There’s no guarantee he’s going to jump straight into the Premier League and be fantastic – we hope he is – but I’m looking forward to working with him and getting him up to speed as quick as we can.”

The History

Milivojevic began his career at hometown club Radnički Kragujevac, making 17 appearances during the 2007/08 season, and scoring two goals, before moving to top-tier side FK Rad ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

Over the next few seasons, he made 54 appearances, scoring three goals, prior to joining Red Star Belgrade in December 2011.

He stayed with Red Star for around 18 months, registering seven goals and six assists in 47 matches, before moving to Anderlecht in July 2013.

Milivojevic never really settled in Belgium, though, managing just two assists in 25 matches, before joining Olympiakos initially on loan in September 2014.

The Serbian was a regular starter for the Greek side, and joined on a permanent basis in June 2015 for a fee of around €2.3 million.

Over the course of his two-and-a-half seasons in Greece, Milivojevic racked up 15 goals and seven assists from 94 appearances, and helped the club to two league titles.

Milivojevic represented Serbia at U19 and U21 levels before making his senior debut against Chile in November 2012.

He currently has 19 caps to his name, but has yet to open his account for his country.

The Prospects

Having missed the weekend loss as untangles red tape surrounding a working visa, there’s hope that Milivojevic could be available for Palace’s upcoming clash with Stoke.

Discussing the new boy after Saturday’s chastening defeat, Big Sam reckons that the Serbian’s screening presence in front of the back-four will be vital:

“I think Luka will bring a bit of stability into midfield, and we need that. Teams keep getting through our midfield far too easily and far too many times. I didn’t see that at Bournemouth, but I have seen it again. The second goal [from Didier Ndong] was a stunner, but the disappointing thing for me is the third and fourth goals we told the centre-halves, you can’t let Jermain Defoe run behind you. And what have they let him do, they’ve let him run in behind them.”

Clearly, then, Milivojevic should help fill what has been a troublesome position for Palace since the departure of Mile Jedinak to Aston Villa last year.

Both Joe Ledley and Mathieu Flamini have been tasked to sit in front of the back four, or as the holding midfielder in a double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation, and have struggled to make an impression.

Fellow central midfielders Yohan Cabaye and James McArthur are far better going forward than they are in terms of their defensive contributions, so the addition of the tenacious Milivojevic should help provide greater protection in front of what has been a vulnerable Palace defence.

Palace have conceded 45 goals in the 24 matches they’ve played so far, with only three teams boasting a worse defensive record. Indeed, last Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth was just the second time this season they have registered a clean sheet.

While Milivojevic’s goal scoring is very reasonable for a defensive-minded midfield player, due mostly due his shooting prowess from distance and dead-ball abilities, it’s unlikely he himself will be a viable Fantasy asset.

He’ll be battling with the likes of Cabaye and Jason Puncheon for set-piece duties, and is probably unlikely to force himself to the front of the queue.

The 25-year-old’s qualities were neatly summed up by Allardyce, who said the Serbian was “a talented two-footed player with intelligent passing ability as well as being very strong defensively, in and out of possession.”

He’s been handed a price tag of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but with team-mate Wilfried Zaha, who has registered four goals and eight assists so far this season, available at 5.5, it’s the latter who should provide us with the strongest option from the Palace midfield.

But if he can provide a formidable shield in front of the Eagles rearguard, then the appeal of Palace defenders could rise once again.

Scott Dann reminded us of his abilities with a third of the season against the Cherries, while Van Aanholt and Schlupp (if played out of position on the flank) could also be viable options for our five-man backlines.

Palace’s schedule (sto, MID, wba) remains kind in the short-term, while they face favourable home match-ups against Leicester City, Burnley and Hull City during the final month of the season.

So while it’s unlikely that Milivojevic will pop up on our radars, he could well provide greater balance to the Eagles midfield, and become a key component in Allardyce’s ongoing quest to shore up his troubled defence.

    Would you do anything?

Players I'd be interested in are FunesMori, Robertson, Jakupovic, Crouch, Carroll, Sigurdsson, Costa, Foster, Robles, Hazard, Lorente.
And players I could sell are Friend, Holgate, Eriksen, Rondon.

Ibra and Sanchez will blank on gw26, I have made profit of 0.4 and 0.2 respectively, I'd prefer not to sell them. If one of the 2, then Ibra->Costa.

Yeah he probably is the first to get and also saves money, but I just think I should keep the faith on the 2 TOT mids as they may deliver in one of their next 3 matches.
On the other hand, they just had 2 very easy matches and they only managed to score 1 goal as a team.
Do you think Siggy will do better than Eriksen?
He'll be transferred in for sure before gw28

Think this week could do really well against poor Leicester but yes Chelsea in week 26 hard but if anyone gets on scoresheet for Swansea will be Siggy and after that very good run of fixtures. Spurs have Liverpool Stoke then Everton so toughish 3 fixtures before they really improve

It's my first season. Which is the best strategy in these cases?

    1. Sharpe Shuffle
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 2 months ago

Depends on your current team. In general, you want to use the next few transfers to get rid of a few players who blank in 26 and 28 and bring in players who play in 26 and 28 and have good fixtures. Saving a transfer this week is a good tactic if you can afford to do that. By GW26, we will know who got through in the FA Cup and therefore who has a blank in 28

      1. Sharpe Shuffle
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

I see your team above. You already have 6 who will play in 28 so you're in decent shape. Aiming for 8 or 9 seems reasonable from here.

      2. Duffy Dunk

        Heaton Grant
        Alonso Coleman Brunt Friend Holgate
        Sanchez Eriksen Alli Pedro Phillips
        Ibra Lukaku Rondon

        1FT, 0.2 itb

The ones I have built value on are Heaton, Alonso, Sanchez, Alli, Ibra.
I just think I'd like to have all of them until and after their blanks.
For gw26 I could just take out Ibra for Costa, but still I'd lose the profit.
Prior to gw28, would it be wrong to do just Eriksen->Siggy and possibly Grant->Jaku, Holgate->Robertson, Friend->FunesMori, Pedro->Antonio?
And am I correct to think that a good wildcard time is one week before the double gw where bench boost has to played?

Your team looks good. I'd definitely save that FT. All will be clearer when we see who got through in the FA Cup. Not sure about double Hull defence but the rest of those moves look sensible.

Your putting quite a bit faith in Fulham beating Spurs.
Nothing is certain but the odds favour Spurs just a tad.
It's not the ideal or most comfortable move but it's an option as I reckon Siggy will score more points over the following 4 gws.
                  That's not rocket science.

I'm not putting any faith in Fulham beating Spurs, or anyone beating anyone. I'm just keeping my options open until I know more. Siggy is almost definitely in for me GW27 anyway, so I'd rather bring him in for a player that definitely blanks GW28 than one that might or might not. I don't see Siggy's point potential over the next 2 GWs being that much better than the Spurs options. Each to their own though 🙂

If you want to have a real pop at me then nows your chance - I'm considering taking out Sanchez a week earlier than planned as blank - liv - blank has no appeal as bench fodder but I'm not sure I'll keep for Hull @ home.
It's getting to that time of the season where pre planning & risk taking become a factor.
Each to their own as you say. 🙂

Please don't take Sanchez out this weekend home to Hull. You will regret it. He is likely the best caption option of the week, much less a transfer OUT target.

A week late man. Last week was the time to drop Sanchez. Now you're either a week late or a week early. Might as well stick for Hull.

Yeah I know Ryan but I have 2 FT's and a route towards GW28 onwards.
I just got back after a few days away this evening and the first game I watched was Arsenal - Chelsea followed by the Hull game and I looked at and thought maybe Sanchez out a week early won't kill me.
Still got time but obviously the Eriksen option was a bonehead choice. 😉

Have to agree with the one step at a time approach. We are largely still in the dark as to how to approach GW28. Best to just deal with certainties for now. Eg those players not involved in cups and selling those who definitely are or are woefully out of form.

      Probably fielding 8 players.

Ie. Next 4 transfers will be based on swapping out my bench fodders for some DGW players whilst not butchering my team value.

      Pieters > Maguire
      De roon > Huddlestone
      Sanchez > Siggy
      Alli > Snodgrass

GW29 I'll bring in Sanchez for Phillips.

I'd like to post an alternate opinion. You want as much as your funds on the pitch each game week. That can't be disputed. So, carrying a bunch of money in your bank (unused funds not on the pitch helping you NOW) then I feel it's a bad call. Unless, it's being done to fund a pre-planned move for next week that is. But doing it two or more weeks (4.9 in bank) in a row is a big no no in my book.

      1. Ibracadabra
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

Generally agree but just posted my highest GW score of the year (98) with 3M in the bank.

There is also the nuance of having all of the maximum amount of funds on the pitch vs bench.

My bench - Jakupovic, Yoshida, De Roon, Amat are all ~4m bench fodder so I have almost all my funds playing week in and week out that if I have a few million in the bank it's not like I am fielding a weakened side...

        1. Yank Revolution
          • 12 Years
          7 years, 2 months ago

3 m is a lot less than 4.9 in this game, no?

          1. Ibracadabra
            • 14 Years
            7 years, 2 months ago

Yes but I think it's still a considerable sum to carry. At the end of the day, of course you don't want to carry 3m-4m-5m more than 2-3 weeks, but it just won't matter nearly as much as getting the (C) right on any given gameweek or making the right budget transfer (we can all afford the likes of Heaton / Brunt / Sigurdsson / Phillips / Carroll / Defoe / etc.) at the right time...

Thank you all for your replies on my previous question! 🙂

As for the best possible time to use the wildcard, am I right to have understood it should be played one week before double gw to ensure there will be balance between starters and bench, and bench boost has to be played on double gw?

    1. Hibbo
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      You can't combine "chips".

So if you intend to play BB or TC you can also wildcard that week.

As for timing as you'd expect there's different trains of thought. My two big chips will be play in DGWs but as I don't know what they even are yet I don't know how I'll play it.

Have 2FT any ideas as to how should I use them? If I move out Giroud> Lukaku I would have to downgrade Lovren to a 4.1 priced player. With this in mind should I look at swapping Giroud for Defoe instead?

I like Ibra Sanchez Hazard and Costa.
Hazard gets one goal and goes from most transferred out to golden boy. A little knee jerky for me.
I would do Eriksen to Siggy personally

    Traded
    Rose > Alonso
    Sanchez > Hazard
If Hull city put a performance up anything like they did against Man Utd and Liverpool then Arsenal may struggle to score.

    Randolph
    Baines Alonso Pieters
    Hazard Alli Siggy Phillips
    Lukaku Jesus Ibrahimovic

Sub - Heaton PVA Stanislas Love

The more I look at 27 the more I think it might be worth buying Ibra that week, just to cap then dump 28. He might be back to 11.1 by 27?
