Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 27

Wednesday night’s 5-1 rout of Huddersfield Town booked Manchester City’s place in the FA Cup quarter-finals and created this season’s first double Gameweek.

With a trip to Sunderland and home tie against Stoke City falling in Gameweek 27, Pep Guardiola’s troops will inevitably dominate our transfer activity and latest Captain Poll.

Sergio Aguero (12.7) will surely be the favourite for the summit after a brace against The Terriers brought his tally to four over the last two matches.

With no competition from the injured Gabriel Jesus and high praise from his manager after last night’s display, our rotation fears surrounding the marksman have been somewhat dampened. Aguero has gained more than 39,000 new owners in just the last 24 hours, with an overnight price rise seemingly inevitable.

Aguero’s captaincy credentials are boosted further by the fragility of the Stoke and Sunderland defences.

No side has conceded more shots in the box than the Black Cats over the last four matches and only Swansea City have been breached more often at home.

After shipping four away to Spurs, the Potters’ visit to the Etihad looks another mouth-watering prospect for City’s attack.

Indeed, the Gameweek 27 profit could be spread far and wide, ensuring that Aguero has rivals for the armband within the City ranks.

Raheem Sterling (7.8) and Leroy Sane (7.5), who have been Guardiola’s preferred wing partnership over the last four league matches, both present strong CV’s for the captaincy role.

Sterling may only boast a single double-digit haul over his last 20 outings, but the wide man has been a beacon of consistency, with attacking returns in eight of the last ten Gameweeks.

Sane is also a man in form, having notched a goal and two assists in his last four league outings and claiming the opener in Wednesday’s win.
So far, 10,000+ FPL managers have drafted in Sane in the last 24 hours, with over 30,000 falling for Sterling’s charms.

As the designated penalty taker for City, Yaya Toure (7.3) has also been added to the poll as an option; a mere 1.1% of FPL managers currently own the Ivorian.

Toure was rested for last night’s encounter and it remains to be seen if Guardiola considers him for the back-to-back Gameweek 27 fixtures. The midfielder’s absence would, presumably, bolster Aguero’s appeal as he assumes duties from the spot.

We perhaps shouldn’t ignore Stoke City as a factor in the Gameweek 27 picture. A home tie with Middlesbrough should attract some attention for their assets, while Mark Hughes will feel that his side can trouble an erratic City defence that again conceded in Wednesday’s tie.

Stoke’s immediate opponents Middlesbrough have lost three of their last four away league fixtures, which makes Potters midfielders Joe Allen (5.1) and 0.9% owned Marko Arnautovic (7.1) intriguing differential options for the armband.

No Stoke player has had more shots on target than Arnautovic over their last four league encounters, while Allen’s six goals make him their top scorer this term.

Peter Crouch (4.9) and Saido Berahino (6.0) are other Potters options, but their prospects are hindered by the possibility that they will likely be vying for just one striker position.

We have also included a series of options for consideration among players with just a single match in Gameweek 27.

Certainly, Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5) will be the big hope for those refusing to invest in Aguero and his City team-mates.

Ibrahimovic has delivered at least a goal or an assist in eight of his last ten Gameweeks and takes on a Bournemouth side at Old Trafford that has conceded 17 goals over their last six outings, more than any other side.

Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini (6.7) is another striker in form.

He has fired five goals in three matches since joining the St Mary’s ranks from Napoli in January. A visit to Watford offers the Italian a platform to maintain such form: the Hornets have kept just a single clean sheet in their last six league Gameweeks.

Swansea City’s protagonist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6) is also included, with opponents Burnley continuing to toil on the road ahead of their visit to the Liberty Stadium. Sigurdsson’s assist against Chelsea last weekend means he has delivered attacking returns in six of his seven starts under head coach Paul Clement.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll on Friday when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Aguero coming in on a FT. For Lukaku or Kane though? Kane has a better fixture this week but I'd have to commit my FT next week to get Lukaku back. Which are people choosing?

SAS vs just SA vs just A - considering GW28 blanks

I've seen this question multiple times on here (and replied a couple of times as well), but I think the below (discussed on the Scoutcast) is a definitive reason for getting SAS (or atleast 2)

    GW 27:
3 City assets (captain one) gives you: 16 players
2 City assets (captain one) gives you: 15 players
1 City asset (and captain) gives you: 12 players

    * TCing gives you 2 more players in each of the scenario

Even if you have only 6 GW28 players, you still make 22 for the 2 GWs which in essence gives you no blanks over the 2 weeks.

The next factor, and the most important one, is that the 12-16 players you have in GW27 are more likely to score a LOT more points than the teams playing in GW28

Finally, as long as you have the usual suspects: Siggy, Lukaku, Liv mid and Everton/West Brom defence - you are not going to lose out on the GW 28 points in terms of OR

Personally, it makes no sense to not get City assets in because you're worrying about GW28 blanks, because it really isn't going to hurt you even if you have only 6!

Am i ranting or does this actually make sense?

Not necessary with the City players scoring a lot more points... As they have 2 games in 1 GW rather than split across 2 they're a lot more likely to suffer rotation than those playing in both 27 and 28..

Perhaps some limited minutes- 60 instead of 90 if they are winning - but would doubt the in form players, SAS, play less than 60 each game- unless injured

      2. LakhaneeFC
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

Agreed, minutes played and rotation is a risk. In which case I would go with only 2 which should play 90+60 and shore up one more player for GW28

It's just about distribution, and I think it makes sense to lean towards City assets on the scale

It's always going to be something of a gamble. If as what happened last year, DGW players don't come off and those good attackers we ditched scored heavily, then its a failed gamble.

I'm not saying the risk is mitigated completely. All I'm saying is that worrying about GW28 (Especially given the players playing that one) is a very valid reason to not get City assets.

In GW27, you could have someone else firing, in which case TC is probably a bit of a stretch, but surely a captain on a DGW will be greater than any other player (especially given it's Aguero!)

The concept makes sense, but I believe your numbers are wrong:

      3 city (with captain) = 15
      2 city (with captain) = 14

      0 city = 12

Both games end with 1-0 result and it would be a proper waste... Double up is fine, triple is too much. Those with 3 Spurs attacking players know how it went before Stoke game.

I agree, but way my team is currently, it woudl be doing Philips > Sterling and Philips does have a game not a blank. If it was for a blank player then it's a no brainer.

You need to also factor in that each additional City player is 4 points less (in most cases - I know people some have 2 FTs)

So if you think your Man C players are going to score more than 4 PPG, triple up and take a -8 I guess (if they are replacing players that don't play in GW28).

Obviously slightly more complicated than this though 🙂

Wouldn't it be score 4 points in GW27 more than those you are taking out rather than 4PPG? And this also assumes that you won't need a hit to take them out - which will be 4 points again in each case.

Fair enough, hits are definitely a factor. I would think -8 over the 2 GWs might be reasonable, but to be honest that really does depend on individual risk appetites and how well you planned for this

In my case, its the -8 this week and no hit next week to field 10 for GW28

I think this question has been on here alot but:

With city on form for scoring goals it looks like a good opportunity to make Aguero (TC) but will he play atleast like 160 minutes?
Is it for City a goal to remain in the FA cup as the play Middelbrough up next in the FA cup or will they start with Iheanacho in the FA cup?

I think FA Cup is their best chance for a trophy this season and Pep knows that, so he will be serious about that.
My Suggestion is, if you have Aguero, Captain him and not TC him

Don't you think it's a good opportunity with stoke and sunderland to use Aguero for the TC? Cause when as example Arsenal get a DGW it might be against tougher opponents?

I think ONLY this question has been asked on here XD

Based on form and Pep praise, he seems likely to play most of not all of both matches. If he only plays 60 mins per game he is still likely to get two goals in each.

    3. VS10_

I think Pep's goal is to continue with the similar attacking football as we have seen recently and put the games to bed by 60-70 mins. Then he will have a chance to give a rest for those who need it the most. If that doesn't work and key players have to play 90 then we can worry a bit, but of course some players can have a rest in the cup before Monaco.

Coming to your question, Bench Baines and Play Jones instead.

Baines & Coleman has been brilliant last few weeks with Alonso alongside. Jones and Love on the bench every week.

Not sure about King starting ahead of Coleman.
RMT says to bench both and play T.Carroll.

If you are just captaining Aguero instead of TCing him, will you hope he does well or badly?

It will probably be beneficial still in terms of rank but psychologically it wont be nice if he does amazing and you didnt TC him

An argument in favor of Kun TC - Aguero needs to play constantly in order to stay sharp and on form.
An argument against Kun TC - 4 games in 10 days doesn't bode well considering Pep's tinkering.

What were you thinking with Benteke and Grabban?

      Can you Afford, Alli+Benteke --> Sterling/Sane + Aguero?

The main question is whether to TC Aguero, but I'm assuming that's all over this place.

    A 4pt hit for Sterling?

10 mins ago: No Aguero, just Sterling. Sure its the right call.
Now: Sterling and Aguero, TC, -4.

    Whats happening?! This is madness.

I don't think there's anything to worry about in terms of Aguero not starting both games. He hasn't even been playing much. He had plenty of rest when Jesus was playing instead of him. He had plenty of rest when he was suspended. If anything, he's fresh and a daisy and Pep will want him playing as much as possible to get to full match sharpness

I think the same too. Plus Pep can no longer keep Aguero unhappy by keeping him as a sub, as there is no Jesus coming for rescue in the near future. Ihenacho is only likely to come if Aguero finishes his job early or is absolutely rubbish in the game.

I have two options, grateful for opinions:

    A. Kane/Lukaku to Aguero, Alli to Sterling (-4)

    B. Benteke to Aguero, Alli to Sterling, Phillips to Morrison (-8)

B saves the Kane/Lukaku dilemma and gets rid of stinking Benteke, but is it worth the extra hit?

depends if it to facilitate aguero or not.
