Captain Poll – Gameweek 28

Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, our Gameweek 28 captain poll selection is limited to players from just eight teams.

Among this reduced group, assets from Liverpool and Everton, who both have favourable home ties, are expected to dominate.

It would be no surprise to see Romelu Lukaku (10.0) at the summit after the Belgian struck his 18th goal of the season against Spurs to become Everton’s most prolific Premier League scorer.

The Golden Boot contender, who is just one shy of current leader Harry Kane, collides with a West Brom defence that boasts a single clean sheet on the road and has shipped eight over their last four away outings.

With a goal and two assists in his last quartet of matches, Ross Barkley (7.1) offers a cheaper armband option amongst Ronald Koeman’s ranks. So, too, does Seamus Coleman (6.0), for those willing to take a risk on captaining a defender.

The right back’s blank against Spurs was the first time since Gameweek 19 that he has failed to deliver either defensive or attacking returns. This consistency is likely to mean he overshadows Leighton Baines (5.7), despite the latter’s spot-kick duties.

Burnley’s visit to Anfield will likely ensure that Liverpool’s midfield provides Lukaku’s main competition.

Sadio Mane’s (9.4) goal and assist at home to Arsenal on Saturday evening adds to an impressive record in front of his own fans – only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard can match the Senegal international’s eight home goals among FPL midfielders.

Seven strikes on home turf makes Roberto Firmino (8.4), who also scored and assisted against the Gunners, another strong option. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho’s (8.2) four close range efforts on Saturday, more than any other Reds player, makes him another to consider. The Brazilian has recorded six attempts on goal in both his previous two Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s continued renaissance under Paul Clement keeps their players in the frame for the captaincy when they drop in on Hull City this weekend.

With five goals in the Clement era, Fernando Llorente (6.4) is set to attract votes, along with set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6). The Icelander has three strikes and five assists since the new manager took the helm, returning points in seven of his last eight Gameweek starts.

Llorente, who scored a fourth brace of the season against Burnley at the weekend, is currently the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 28, with more than 56,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Hull, under their new manager Marco Silva, are also undergoing something of a recovery, having beaten Liverpool and drawn against Manchester United since the Portuguese took charge ahead of Gameweek 21. However, with nine goals conceded over that time, the fragility of the Tigers defence is still evident.

West Ham’s visit to Bournemouth looks ripe for goals and, as a result, offers a raft of alternative captaincy candidates.

Over their last six matches, the Cherries have conceded 15 goals and failed to register a clean sheet, while the Hammers have been similarly poor, claiming a solitary clean sheet and shipping nine goals.

For Eddie Howe’s men, Josh King (5.4) looks to be the most secure route to points. The first choice penalty taker in the absence of long-term injury victim Callum Wilson, the Norwegian has scored an impressive five times in his last six Gameweeks – with a mere 3% ownership, he looks an intriguing differential candidate for this reduced Gameweek.

Among the most likely Hammers’ captaincy candidates are Andy Carroll (6.2), should he have recovered from a groin injury ahead of tonight’s clash with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio (6.9), who is suspended for tonight’s Blues encounter and sits in 8.3% of FPL teams, is another valid option: he has scored eight goals and assisted another seven this term.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Those who own both Mané and Lukaku (presumably most people), surely it's a straight choice between the two for captaincy this weekend?

I feel like Lukaku is the safe choice but Mané is so explosive. But then again, that Burnley defence will sit so deep it will be difficult for Mané to get space in behind them, which is where he's most dangerous.

    It's a tough one.

Not sure about that. We've scored goals against the lesser teams at home, which is the most important thing from an FPL point of view, but not picked up results.

It's away from home against the lesser teams where we've struggled in attack - see Burnley, Hull, Leicester

I have Firmino too but yeah, I think I'll play it safe with Lukaku. The Liverpool midfield still has a lottery element - might be Coutinho & Lallana who's numbers come in this weekend.

Liverpool must score a goal in the first 30 minutes for Mané to be a good captaincy choice. I think it's the GW to go safe and captain Romelu.

Yeah, me too tbh. The time to sell Phillips was last week in hindsight, for either a City mid or King.

If i did the move for a hit, it would mainly be for money saving purposes and getting the price rises, rather than looking at GW 28

Sometimes watching the games rather than going by stats is the way to go. Mane always looks much more dangerous, and it's normally Coutinho who gets subbed off early

I'm actually getting in Coutinho this week. He's totalled six shots on goal in back-to-back weeks, and he's over a million cheaper.

They are the ones reporting on them though

You should watch SSN, they've been desperate for an Ibra ban all morning

I am in no doubt. No news like bad news/scandals. What I meant is, there is no story reporting if/when the FA will meet and/or when the decision will be made

They usually announce it between 5-7 PM GMT. Expect to hear something by this evening or at the very latest tomorrow evening.

Is it possible to prove the defender meant the stamp
I mean if he denies it was on purpose ,and he wasn't looking how can they do him

I think he did and guess this is not court of law stuff

I think both cases are pretty obvious. They'd been at it all game before the stamp. Mings wanted revenge for what Ibra did when he got booked

From a quasi-legal perspective, they will have to look at motive, history and character - just like in a normal trial when there is no complete evidence. The jury still hve to make a decision. It is more Elbowgate than Stampgate I am concerned about though. I actually think a 3 match ban will be good for Ibra (if not United). He has looked so tired recently that a rest will do him good.

Don't agree with the rest being good. He will be getting 2 weeks off anyway this month.

Ahh yeah, the breaks (again). Yeah 5 weeks is probably too much. I am ditching anyway. Llorente this week and Kane next week.

    Gk choice for 28:

Foster [ Eve Away] or Jakupovic [ Swa Home ] ???

Worried that everybody is banking on Siggy and Lukaku for 28

Don't think so, sounded like he was close last week though so must have a good chance.

    Anything wrong with these moves:
Stan + Sterling -> King + Cout leaving me with

    Heaton
    Brunt Evans Baines (Amat) (Alonso)
    Siggy Cout King Snod Phillips
    Lukaku (Ibra) (Aguero)

    Alli and eriksen owners...
    What are you doing?
I'm leaning towards keeping both, going without walker and without Sanchez until doubles

Any idea about the defensive player (exclude EVE players) for 28? And how's the chance compared to if I get Llorente?

Which teams are likely to have a DGW before GW37?

Planning WC36 and BB37 so would be handy to start to tucking in a few possible early DGWers in next few weeks.

I can't look at the spreadsheet thanks, it makes me feel a little sick

Arsenal, Man U, Southampton are the only teams with 2 x postponed fixtures currently to be rearranged

    My front 8:

    Mane Siggy Phillips Sterling* Eriksen*

    Lukaku Barnes Ibra*

    0FT

Will Ibra >> Llorente worth -4?

Was planning to do Ibra >> Kane next week..

If that's the only transfer you need to make over the next two gameweeks then it could work out. I'd wait for news on Phillips first though, as he could need replacing.

    Hi Guys
So the big debate seems to be who to Captain out of Lukaku and Mane for GW28

At the other end of the park I've got to make the choice of keeper

    A. Heaton away to Liverpool
    B. Foster away to Everton

    What do you think?

Have Ibra Aguero Lukaku. Could do either Ibra or Lukaku to perhaps Llorente, but if Ibra doesn't get banned, he has a good fixture run. Aguero is still excellent. Someone has to make way for Kane, though. And Gabbiadini seems a great 3rd forward.

Sanchez seems a perfect fit for City if Aguero leaves.

Sanchez has the work rate, effort in pressing and technical ability that Pep loves. He would be a great fit for Pep.

Also Arsenal have often been a feeder club to City.
