The Stock Check – Gameweek 28 – Sunday

Harry Kane limps off out of Spurs’ FA Cup win over Millwall with an ankle injury as Fantasy managers fret on his availability for the run-in. In his absence, Son Heung-min fires a hat-trick in the 6-0 rout, while Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli grab a goal apiece. Elsewhere, Georginio Wijnaldum delivers again, and Ashley Barnes boosts his third-forward credentials as Liverpool struggle to see off Burnley at Anfield.

On the Rise

Georginio Wijnaldum
In a Gameweek where many loaded up on Liverpool’s pricey front three, it was left to a couple of differentials to come to the fore at home to Burnley.

Transferred in by 12,000+ and 5,000+ respectively for the reduced programme of fixtures, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can grabbed a goal apiece as Jurgen Klopp’s side eventually saw off a stubborn Clarets outfit.

While Can’s strike was his first since Gameweek 14, the Dutchman’s leveller maintained a fine run of form that has produced three goals and two assists in his last six appearances, blanking on just one of those occasions.

With Philippe Coutinho looking out-of-sorts and Roberto Firmino missing out with a knock today, Wijnaldum – at 7.5 and owned by just 1.6% of managers – may well emerge as a mid-price differential for the run-in.

Once next week’s visit to the Etihad Stadium has passed, the Reds are handed home encounters against Everton, Bournemouth and Palace, in addition to trips to Stoke City and West Brom, in the subsequent five.

Ashley Barnes
Having served a one-match suspension in the previous Gameweek, the Burnley striker made an immediate return to the first XI alongside Andre Gray up front.

Barnes’ opener once again highlighted his appeal as a budget third striker to be called upon off our benches –priced at a mere 4.5 in FPL, he now has four goals and a pair of assists in his last 11 league outings.

The lack of a double Gameweek further down the line dents his appeal, yet with Sunderland, Stoke and Middlesbrough in the next four, Barnes should continue to offer value for money over the short-term, at least.

Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli
While Harry Kane limped off early in the 6-0 thrashing of Millwall, the Spurs midfield duo show just why they both occupy a place in the top five FPL midfield standings.

Handed a role amongst the subs, Eriksen climbed off the bench to replace the stricken Kane and helped seal Spurs’ place in the last four of the FA Cup by grabbing a goal and two assists, while Alli delivered a goal and assist to score for the third home match in succession.

Despite failing to net for the last 11 Gameweeks, Eriksen has kept his tally ticking over with eight assists, including four sets of double-digits. Alli, meanwhile, has netted an impressive ten times during that period to lead his team-mate by 11 FPL points.

While the concern over Kane’s injury escalates, the upcoming schedule will ensure that many turn to Spurs’ midfielders regardless as Mauricio Pochettino’s side prepare for a fine run of fixtures that sees them host Southampton, Watford and Bournemouth in the next six and also travel to Burnley, Swansea City and Leicester City.

Son Heung-Min
Three goals and an assist in the Millwall demolition suggests that the Korean could ultimately prove the main beneficiary from a possible spell on the sidelines for Kane.

Initially tucking in alongside Alli in the central support roles behind Kane, Son thrived as a result of Spurs’ enforced reshuffle, with Pochettino initially overlooking summer signing Vincent Janssen as a replacement.

There are no doubts that Alli and Eriksen are the safest options amongst the Spurs midfield contingent – particularly if Spurs continue with a 3-4-2-1. Yet today’s performance indicates that Son – priced at 6.9 and owned by only 3% of FPL managers – could now emerge as a viable alternative should Pochettino’s star striker be ruled out for any period of time.

In Decline

Harry Kane
The Spurs frontman lasted just ten minutes against Millwall earlier this afternoon before being forced off with an ankle problem, potentially throwing the plans of Fantasy managers into disarray.

Just 24 hours after the previous deadline passed, Kane had already been acquired by 34,000+ new owners in light of the form that saw him serve up 12 goals and three assists in the previous ten Gameweeks.

Bearing in mind that Kane missed seven weeks (and five Gameweeks) of the season with an injury to his right ankle, a repeat of the same complaint would have a significant impact on how we assess both Spurs and our three-man frontlines.

Indeed, his manager’s post-match comments sounded somewhat ominous for the striker’s 21.4% ownership after he left the stadium on crutches:

“He twists his ankle – the same ankle as it was before against Sunderland. Now we will wait and assess tomorrow and wait and see. Today it’s difficult. It’s a similar situation to Sunderland. We need to assess him today it is difficult to give you a real level of how he is. We hope it’s not a big issue, but it looks similar. It’s sure it will be difficult for him to play against Southampton but we need to see what happens in the next few days. Every time something like this happens and before the scan, he immobilises with a [protective] boot.”

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic banned for the next two Gameweeks and Sergio Aguero mustering two goals in his last ten league fixtures ahead of three tough Gameweeks against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, our premium options up top are already limited. A potential stint on the sidelines for Kane may well see many now look to utilise a 3-5-2 set-up and spend big on re-acquiring Alexis Sanchez in a five-man midfield.

Philippe Coutinho
Subbed off before the hour-mark, the little Brazilian’s toils continued against the Clarets.

Despite being devoid of Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp still chose to replace Coutinho after an ineffectual display saw him fail to produce a single shot on goal or create any scoring chances.

Frustratingly, the former Inter man boasted some strong underlying numbers ahead of this one – firing more goal attempts (20) than any player in the previous four Gameweeks, he was drafted in by 103,000 FPL managers last week.

Those new owners may already be reassessing that decision, with today’s blank taking Coutinho’s run to one goal in his last ten league appearances.

I was set on doing Aguero and Snodgrass to Costa and Alli but now with the Kane injury I can't.

Kane to Costa means I'm left with 7.5 for a mid and priced out of Alli. Any suggestions?

If he's out for a while then it could be a great move. If, however (as I suspect) it is one of those "he's fine after the internationals" then it may be risky.

The blank gamwweek went ok: 53 points but it could have been much better

Until the last minute I was tempted to do Firmino to King but I was on -8 and I had a hit to bring Firmino in so.. I didn't have the balls to do it

I am glad my captain was Lukaku and I got happy with Siggy, Mawson and Coleman...

On the other hand my liv mid power trio Coutinho, Mane was a HUGE disapointment...

Anyway I have rised a lot in leagues and they are all green!

My problem now is gtoo many flagged players: Llorente, Kane and Firmino...

Too many players I want (or need) to get rid of: Firmino, Coutinho, Brunt, Llorente, Kane (?)

Probably bringing Hazard, Sanchez, Stephens (SOU 4.0 def), Costa and Gabbiadini but I don't know which step to take first...

Earlier this season, before GW12, I thought I was making a masterstroke. As an avid Spurs supporter who was keen to load up on assets from my own team on the back of us playing better, I made a differential move.

That move was to bring in Eriksen. The Eriksen who, up to that point, only had 3 assists in his first 11 games, and zero goals. His ownership had slumped, and no-one was interested in him.

In GW12, my Spurs theory was picking up pace, and we beat West Ham 3-2 (good for attacking returns!), but Eriksen didn't return, disappointingly, and played poorly. Meanwhile Kane had a brace and Alli was back playing.

Next was the Champions league. We were playing Monaco. Eriksen didn't even start, came on in the 65th minute and was absolutely dreadful. In fact, he was so bad, he was widely criticised by the Spurs fans as having been rubbish since around March, and I immediately shipped for Sigurdsson....

Next up, Chelsea; he got 10 points
Then Swansea, he got 18 points
    His next 5 returns were 2, 19, 2, 11, 10, and his ownership exploded.

Of course, I missed out on all of this. I was too rash to ship him out having seen initial promise, simply because of one and a third truly poor performances. Just a couple of hours ago, I was all ready to ship Coutinho, perhaps for the likes of Sanchez. Then I remembered this story. Prior to today, Coutinho also showed promise in perhaps getting some attacking returns after a long dry spell, yet against Burnley he was atrocious, just like Eriksen was.

Sure, there is no perfect analog, but it's important in FPL to learn from your mistakes, and perhaps this time I ought to be more patient with Coutinho. So I will be... let's hope today's humiliating substitution for Woodburn will ensure Coutinho gets a grip, fast.

    Decided I'm wildcarding this GW.

It's got its risks but rewards of having some big differentials over rivals and shaping up my team which is now decimated by injuries.

My choices certainly won't be for everyone's taste but this is what I'm going with:

    Cech
    Alonso / Walker / Valencia
    Sanchez / Walcott / Mane / King
    Aguero / Lukaku / Gabbiadini

Pickford / Tom Carrol / Kone / Yoshida

    1.3mITB

I'll have plenty of transfers from now until any doubles to re adjust my team, while also having enablers that will come in handy for the doubles without having to waste transfers on them (Pickford, Yoshida & Kone).

Not against it but I'd like to get Arsenal cover in defence, especially with the doubles and think Cech or DDG are great options to balance out double gameweek players for bench boost for example.

Jaku is great (I own him before this WC team and have since the season started) but he has at least one if not two games less than most teams.

If you made a transfer and that takes up all your saved up cash, and that will force you to WC the next time you urgently need to make a few changes, would you do it? Or would you wait it off and take whatever points you get from the out-of form player?

You don't have to WC to make a few changes - just take a points hit or two - we all do it!

I don't get the Jamie Vardy love. Don't know if I'm missing something but I don't get why so much admiration for him this week.

I also don't think Costa is as essential as people seem to think. Stoke played well against Cify.

Gabbiadini has a tough fixture this week but good fixtures after that and is in great form. He seems to be the standout, in my eyes at least.

Thanks Smurf. I too don't get the Vardy option.

Defoe v Gabbiadini for me probably

Think the blue on the ticker maybe making Defoe look a better option than he is.

Yeah he has pens so realistically could get a haul any week, but aside from that he's not in great form.

I actually think Burnley are going to finally get their first away win of the season this week. And if I had to stick a fiver on a correct score it would be 0-2. Only my opinion though, I could be crazily incorrect.

Vardy has looked a reborn player since Ranieri left, as do the whole team. It's not Vardy love, it's a punt on a potentially great diff

Yeah I can see that part, although we are still to see if they can carry this on away from home. I suppose the next two home games after this look decent but I'd prefer to have Gabbiadini especially for if a DGW comes up soon for him.

Costa or Vardy depending on whether I go for Son or Alli

I imagine he will carry as he did today after Kane went off. Not expecting the same result though 😉

I'm tempted by Vardy as his next 3 fixtures look tasty and Kane could be back after that as it takes us up to the 8th April.

It depends on the length of the injury really, I think the default option is Costa though at this point.

    Last message cropped, WC team:
    Pickford (Forster)
    Walker Davis Coleman Alonso (Yoshida)
    Son Mane Sánchez King Sigi
    Lukaku (Gabby, Stuani)

    Thoughts appreciated?

Not sure I like both Forster and Yoshida double up. I'd maybe just go with one.

Are you aware Davies only has a few games left until Rose is back?

Stuani is a bit meh and isn't guaranteed starts.

Aside from that I really like the rest.

The Saints are for their double game weeks, intent is not to play Yoshida until then. Will play 3 5 2.

Stuani was a filler last pick, only went for him over Barnes because he has DW for bench boost but I hear you

Bought Kane at 10.7m. If I sell him now I'll get 11.0m for him.

Likelyhood of him dropping back to 11.0m so as not to have to pay more to get him back in?

    He's currently at 11.4m

If he's ruled out for a long time most will sell immediately so could be fewer falls

Depends how long he's out for. The longer he's out the further his price will fall.

True but that will depend on how quickly any long-term injury is confirmed

Hi guys, long time viewer first time poster. I know I'm gravless but please be nice.

I can't really make much sense of the DGW spreadsheet so I had a go old-school with a pen and paper. What I seem to have found is that if Chelsea beat Man Utd there may not be a DGW at all in GW34. Hear me out...

In 34 there will be blanks for Man City, WBA, Arsenal, Sunderland, Leicester, Spurs, Southampton. These can easily be rescheduled that midweek. Every other game that has been postponed so far contains one of those teams meaning they could all (bar Southampton v Man Utd) be rescheduled in GW37.

Key to this theory are the games between Southampton (v Arsenal and v Man Utd) If some of the games that have already been postponed (for EFL final and FA Cup quarters) are scheduled into 34 there's not enough GWs for Southampton to play those games bar clashes with Champs League. I'd imagine the Premier League would be keen to avoid those clashes as much as possible to due potential fines?

Anyway that's my two cents, I know plenty here are more ITK than me so I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Unlucky to be bottom of the page. I think you've got some good points, but look at where they rescheduled the City v Stoke game. Midweek CL clash. This move surprised all of us and has sort of thrown all the planning up in the air. I think it is best to not worry too much about it until we get more concrete information. We know which teams have DGWs and they've got to be put in somewhere, so just try and bring in players now that we know will have a DGW.

I try doing stuff by long hand as well, it is so difficult with so little information available- but good luck!

      Nice post.

To be honest call me stupid but I can't make a great deal of sense from the DGW spreadsheet either so it's nice to here your findings in plain English.

Seems to me that there will be a big DGW37 and then multiple small DGW's separate to this. Potentially even starting with Ars v Southampton as early as GW33 if my understanding is right.
