Scout Notes – Internationals – Sunday

Jermain Defoe grabs the headlines, but Jamie Vardy catches the Fantasy eye as England make fairly light work of a defensive Lithuania.

Scotland and Northern Ireland also win, but there’s an injury scare for Diego Costa ahead of Spain’s friendly in France tomorrow night.

Here’s how Sunday’s action unfolded.

England 2 Lithuania 0

A regulation win for England was lifted, to a degree, by the opening goal from Jermain Defoe, the international return of the Sunderland striker described by his manager Gareth Southgate as ‘a great story’.

But the main Fantasy narrative was provided by England’s second scorer of the evening, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

His cool finish from an Adam Lallana pass was one of a man whose form and confidence has returned – much like his club side – just in time to capitalise on a reasonable run-in and solid short-term schedule.

The Foxes face Stoke and Sunderland at home next and will have a double Gameweek to come, too. A tricky run of four consecutive away matches will take some of the shine off Leicester’s lustre, but Vardy’s three goals and two assists from his last three league starts points to a man back to his best.

Fantasy Premier League managers agree – the forward is currently the third most transferred-in player this week, behind only Man United’s Antonio Valencia and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Indeed, Vardy is the number one striker for transfers in over the last 24 hours as the bandwagon picks up pace.

Sold by over 22,000 FPL managers since the previous deadline, Defoe’s goal, following fine work by Raheem Sterling, would have come as a relief to his 23.6% ownership who have endured his four-match drought in the league.

Sunderland remain favourites for the drop, but have an attractive set of fixtures and double Gameweek to offer plenty of potential for more returns from the Black Cats’ striker.

Second-half substitute Marcus Rashford also caught the eye, enlivening a match in which the referee’s name – Ruddy Buquet – was one of the more interesting aspects.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic serving the final segment of his three-match ban at home to West Brom on Saturday, the 4.6%-owned Rashford looks likely to lead the line for Jose Mourinho’s men.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Keane, Stones, Bertrand, Dier, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sterling (Rashford 60), Lallana, Alli, Defoe (Vardy 60).
Subs not used: Clyne, Heaton, Shaw, Gibson, Livermore, Ward-Prowse, Barkley, Lingard, Redmond, Forster.

Northern Ireland 2 Norway 0

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis was the man of the match as Northern Ireland saw off a tame Norway.

Davis set up his country’s second goal while a defence containing West Brom trio Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Chris Brunt and Watford’s Craig Cathcart held firm at the other end.

The Norwegians only threatened occasionally, with FPL’s man of the moment Josh King – seven goals and an assist from his last six Bournemouth starts – starved of service.

West Ham midfielder Havard Nordtveit also featured for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Scotland left it very late to secure a 1-0 win over Slovenia that keeps them in the race for second place in the group England currently top.

West Brom’s James Morrison shook off an ankle injury to play 82 minutes and Andrew Robertson and Robert Snodgrass were the only other Premier League starters in Gordon Strachan’s side.

Four Premier League players started the match on the bench as Germany eased to a 4-1 win in Azerbaijan.

Shkodran Mustafi and Emre Can remained there, while Mesut Ozil, who has missed Arsenal’s last two league matches, came on after 61 minutes and Man City winger Leroy Sane was given a late run-out.

Swansea keeper Lukas Fabianski and Hull City wide man Kamil Grosicki were in action as Poland won 2-1 in Montenegro.

Grosicki was replaced deep into stoppage time.

Romania and Denmark played out a goalless draw in which Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen both played the full 90 minutes for the Danes.

All the South American sides are in World Cup qualifying action tomorrow night and there are also a number of European friendlies.

Early news includes Belgium pair Thibaut Courtois (hip) and Marouane Fellaini (toe) being ruled out of their country’s trip to Russia. They will return to their clubs to be assessed ahead of the weekend fixtures.

And there was an injury scare involving Spanish striker Diego Costa, who suffered an impact injury to his leg and ankle in training ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with France.

The forward, owned by 39.7% of FPL managers, underwent an X-ray but remains with the Spanish squad, with Chelsea informed on his condition.

It remains to be seen if Costa is considered fit enough to turn out against the French tomorrow night with the injury under observation by Spain’s medical team according to reports. The Blues, of course, already have concerns over Eden Hazard, who pulled out of Belgium duties with a calf complaint earlier in the break.

As a XV to aim for over the next few weeks, how is this? I have no WC so I need to plan ahead a bit, this will take me 5 FTs:

    Grant
    Alonso, Valencia, Vertonghen
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Sterling, Sane
    Ibrahimovic, Costa, Gabbiadini/Llorente

Subs: Jaku, Yoshida, 4.4 Boro def, T. Carroll

Ibra will probably come in for GW34; Llorente and Lukaku are my current strikers (alongside Costa), choosing when to do Lukaku > Ibra will be a tricky decision. I'll just hold Llorente instead of getting Gabbiadini if he isn't fit in time for SOU DGWs. Sterling and Sane coming in for GW32, one of those could be Pedro, but I don't like how often he gets subbed with Willian lurking.

This would leave me with 3 players who don't have a DGW in 37 (Grant, Jaku, Carroll), but I should have time to replace those with FTs if I don't suffer many injuries.

      Hey tinkerman!

That's a great plan - I have a really similar set up, except Kun instead of Costa. It's the one thing that's made me think of NOT wildcarding, actually, this need for a big plan - I love a plan, but if you get a huge injury crisis then you're suddenly bleeding point hits all over the place :(.

Either way, looks great on paper - have you factored in Kane returning? Surely a requirement?

I see you have Vert, too - I'm considering Toby as my Coleman replacement. Any regrets about choosing a Spurs CB? Owned Vert in the past and all he did was give me 6 pointers - no attacking threat.

        Hi!

I agree that planning often doesn't work out, but I have no choice but to have one without a WC and the DGWs coming up. I have considered Kane, I can't afford three big strikers so he would have to come in for Ibra or Costa, probably Costa - I could get a bit of the cash required by going for Pedro over Sterling in this case. I can't afford Walker or Toby, I have been waiting for Rose but then I took a look at Vert in the members section and was pleasantly surprised by his attacking stats. A few other posters have noted how Vert is getting forward now also, might be impacted by the return of Rose but he is getting forward surprisingly well at the moment. I think Vert + 0.9m is worth the downgrade on Walker.

I really want to hold Lukaku, but (especially if Kane is back) it's too tempting to sell him and get in the big guns who have DGWs. He has great fixtures 32-34 though, so I will hold as long as possible probably.

Yeah think you've just described my worry; I would lack that flexibility if I wildcarded. But I understand the situation you're in! I like Pedro for a short term win, then City after the Chelsea game.

I see what you mean about Vert. It's very marginal on the l4w in the stats, and both he and Toby are taken to the cleaners by Valencia. Tough call.

Kaku is earmarked as basically becoming Ibra and then later Kane. Gotta keep for 32-3 then out for Ibra in 34!

        2. The Tinkerman
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

For example, if Kane is back I can do:

          Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, STERLING
          Ibrahimovic, KANE, LLORENTE

Or, if I want Gabbi over Llorente then:

          Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, PEDRO
          Ibrahimovic, KANE, GABBIADINI

I would have to get a 4.3m Boro defender instead for the latter option, but that should be fine with both Friend and Chambers coming back from injury at that price.

I have Siggy already, and it is tempting to hold. I may hold him, but the City DGW is very tempting. It could be a move I leave until GW37.

Yeah, the keeper situation is something I've ignored a bit in my planning as I think I'll always have bigger moves to make and I don't want to take hits for keepers. Valdes for the DGW might be a worthwhile move though. Pickford is the other one I'm looking at.

        1. Hasselbaink Forever - Defoe…

With doubts over Chambers and the other cheap Mids I think Valdes is a more reliable option

            • 8 Years
            7 years, 1 month ago

I will have to get a 4.3-4.4 defender in for Baines to free up money, so I'm hoping Friend or Chambers will be fit by then, if not then I'll have to go for a Watford defender, or something similar. I do want Valdes, but it will almost certainly mean a hit, good chance I will do it before the DGW though. I want to see how Boro do without Karanka first, I think they will have to take more risks going forward now, could reduce their appeal at the back.

Oh man, RFM on the bench, really don't know if he's going to be in the squad, seems to have lost his place and the rumours are it's Holgate who will come in to cover Coleman's injury.

Got to hope he goes 3-5-2 and brings RFM back as a member of that back 5 (I'm also an owner) but I can't quite see it happening.

Mawson scoring goals and could keep a cleanie against hitherto non-scoring Boro.

Bar 2 or 3 players I had an almost identical team to Jonty during the period he fell into the millions, I did also. A few weeks after that I gathered 8 flags in a single GW and had to take a 20 point hit just to field 11 players. Also had the mobile app crash on me and transfer Mbokani into my team in error a few weeks after that; FPL were unable to reverse it, I just got an apology for the error. Not a great season. I made plenty of poor decisions also, Fuchs in, Baines over Coleman, Brunt over McAuley, Foster over Heaton, Alonso out before his 21 point haul... etc.

You would you prioritise getting in your team?

    A) Walker
    B) Alli
    C) Eriksen

Walker has less competition in our defences. Only chelsea def and Valencia, really. Plenty of options in midfield to potentially cover lack of spurs mids, but will they really score as much?

Hey Ozil - how's it going? Think your namesake is leaving us by the sounds of it! Kind of unsure how I feel about it - got good memories of last season but this season he's been so poor that I'm kind of fine with him heading out, hopefully to be replaced with someone with a bit more determination / big game nous.

Erm, I'm actually thinking of replacing Antonio with Mahrez and might well captain him too - no Costa here, and have Coleman also to replace so no scope to bring him nor Vardy in. No other standouts - punt on Kaku (form of his life); Mane (could smash it in the derby) or Kun (we are in disarray at the back) are the others in mind atm.

      1. Arteta

Hello there! I'm fine but my team is struggling at the moment. I got two red arrows in a row after 9 greenies 🙄
        I vice captained Lukaku, twice.
This is the latest I've read about the new contract - http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/10815255/mesut-ozil-to-hold-talks-with-arsenal-over-new-contract-decision-soon
It's kinda boring to wait and see what Özil, Sanchez and Wenger will decide. They should just tell us so we can all move forward and forget about it.

Yeah, Mahrez is going under the radar and could be a great differential in the coming weeks. Who will be your Coleman replacement?
I still have Kun (c) since last week. I can't tell you how angry I was last Sunday. He could've easily outscore Lukaku but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Bah, know the feeling. I captained Mane vs. Leicester a couple of weeks ago - still stings!

I think Arsene should go. I've been very pro Wenger for a long time, but even I keep seeing the same mistakes, the same meltdowns - it's like clockwork every season. I'm not convinced he can turn it around because he's been trying to do precisely that for so long now and it's just not worked.

I totally empathise - as I said, I captained Mane vs. Leicester and also missed his 4 goals vs. Bournemouth as I'd captained Alli instead for some reason. Keep fxxxing up big time and seeing my casual ML rivals brag. Irritates me no end!

Coleman is going for one of Toby, Valencia or Yoshi. Yoshi = Ibra enabler. Toby = covers Spurs, other ML rivals have Walker so I want to get someone there to contest that. And Valencia is obvious, but I'm not too sure about it, I think he will be rested during their congested fixture list, and I think JM will prioritise the UEL - that Burnley game will see a diluted United side for sure, and if you look at past fixtures (e.g. Xmas) where there has been congestion Valencia has been rested. So really not sure!
          Who you bringing in?

          1. Arteta
            • 8 Years
            7 years, 1 month ago

My captaincy decisions are destroying me. Most of the time I'm choosing between 3 players and somehow I pick the lowest scoring one. Unbelievable.
I heard some rumours about 1 year extension which seems reasonable to me. I'd give him one last chance to win the league (we know it'll be even harder than this season) and then it's probably time to say goodbye. Frustrating times for all Gooners around the world. We can still win the FA Cup and finish second which would be amazing after such poor season.

I thought about Toby too. He almost scored against Saints and I guess he'll get some attacking returns sooner or later. I know almost everyone is going for Valencia which makes him a little bit boring pick in my eyes ... so I've opted for Bertrand. Watched him yesterday and he looked good once again. I have 2 flagged defenders (PVA&Olsson) and Brunt needs to go. I'm happy to give him a chance and I think that he will do well at least in next 3 games. I'm pretty sure Mourinho will rotate and at this point I need as many nailed on players as possible. April is make it or break it month for United so let's see what happens. I won't exclude getting Valencia but my gut was telling me to go for Bertrand. Spurs defenders are on my watchlist too and if Olsson is out I might take a hit to get one.

            1. Individual
              • 10 Years

Yeah I am thinking of Bertie. Could be a nice halfway house! I just feel like Valencia will get so much ownership it'll get to Walker/Alonsoesque punishment of non owners that I fancy getting him in early. Remember that it's an echo chamber in ffs too, and non-ffsers may have the same issues as our over-engineered lineups 🙂

Yep, i also have Brunty, he has to go but I'm hoping for some sort of attacking return. Have Coleman and Antonio so there are priorities for removal!

And yes these marginal calls have cost me all season. I've been overthinking it and getting it wrong, going on gut and getting it wrong... Sometimes it's just if the fpl gods are smiling on you or no. ML rivals have dreadful teams compared to me but keep getting jammy with random players delivering. But last year that was me as I comfortably won my ML, so it's all swings and roundabouts... Just hope they start to favour me again in the run in!
