Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Gameweek 31 is upon us and underway courtesy of a quartet of Tuesday night matches under lights.

In Fantasy terms, the focus will be on Old Trafford where Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to the equation and Manchester United’s starting line-up against Everton.

Having once been owned by over 2.4 million FPL managers, he’s now part of just over half that number and, intriguingly, goes head-to-head with the new top owned asset in Everton’s Romelu Lukaku tonight.

The Toffees frontman will be under renewed pressure to deliver following his tepid display in Saturday’s Merseyside derby. With Ibrahimovic now returned ahead of United’s two double Gameweeks, Lukaku needs to show willing and perhaps produce points to stave off increasing sales.

Elsewhere, Leicester City’s renaissance receives its latest test with basement dwellers Sunderland at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes have won four successive Premier Leauge matches and, while Jermain Defoe is fit to start for the visitors, Jamie Vardy and company will be backed for another win and further returns.

Meanwhile, Burnley host Stoke City at Turf Moor with Tom Heaton the key asset on show, while West Brom make the trip to Vicarage Road with Gareth McAuley the big draw – he boasts six goals from corner kicks, with the Hornets conceding ten from set-plays, only Bournemouth have conceded more.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Have a similar side and I'm planning Vardy + Firmino to Ibra + Sane/Zaha.

Anyway, just sit tight for now. Wait till after the games.

Jose's treatment of shaw now is just plain bizarre. granted he has a lot to learn and obviously has let himself go a bit since his injury but to come on, create an assist and then hear this from your manager can only be demoralising:

“Because he was playing on my side of the pitch I was able to do his thinking for him, I was making every decision for him. At 21 years old he needs to have a better understanding and he needs to accelerate the process.”

jose is so petty I really am stating to think its because shaw chose united over chelsea when jose was still at stamford bridge

Would love nothing more than to see Shaw start and do well but maybe he does need to shoulder some, or a lot of the blame. That's 3 different managers now who have criticized him one way or another and even when he came on last night, he wasn't great overall and his crosses were very poor. Great shot for the penalty though and still our best LB. Fingers crossed he will be back in the starting line up soon whatever is happening.

The difference is the other two managers were too scared to bench him. He usually started whenever fit. Jose is not having any of that nonsense and I'm glad for that.

United players have been lazy passengers ever since Fergie left. Moyes and LVG let themselves be dictated by the players. I'm glad Jose is putting the foot down. The league is getting stronger each year, if United are to reach the top again then every player needs to be 100 % committed and dedicated.

It has nothing to do with Shaw choosing United over Chelsea. Jose was the same with Martial and Mkhi earlier in the season.

It's a bit strange at this point. I get that he's not performing, training etc and fair enough to answer why he's not being played once but he's hanging him out to dry at this point.

I wonder if he's already tried the nicely nice approach and it hasn't worked so he's trying something different.

I saw one journalist tweet the other day that even some of the other players don't think Shaw has anyone else to blame but himself and it's not like Jose is the first manager to give this opinion of him.

I hope they can all kiss and make up though, still think he can be a real talent.

Why are people saying United's chances of the top four are gone...?

They're only 5 points off Liverpool with a game in hand and 4 points off City. By no means unattainable.

Can't see Jose giving up and prioritising the Europa League yet.

Maybe. But if they win their game in hand then it's only 2 points to Pool. Given their propensity for dropping point, he'd look a fool if he prioritised the Europa League then lost to Anderlecht. I think they're safe for the next several games.

Why is it nonsense? Completely logical. It isn't like they are playing for the title or even a top spot, and they seem out of the danger zone regarding relegation risk, so why would they not give some key players reduced minutes ahead of a trip to Spain? Please point out the exact nonsense of which you refer.

Why change a winning team that has momentum? All the players have been rotated a lot this year pre-Shakespeare so there is no risk of a lack of freshness.

Why kill the winning spirit the week before a massive game? I can see Vardy and Mahrez off on 70 minutes but that's about it.

They also have a 5 day break between games.

You are right but many a manager has done that mistake in the past - who can tell Shakespeare is not gonna do it too?

It is not nonsense at all, it is very possible he rests Vardy or only gives him the first 60 mins or so. No one knows.

I hope so too, wasn't too big a risk with my team - Had no other stand out candidate

        Alli - Siggy - Coutinho (V) - Tadic
        Aguero - Lukaku - Carroll (C)

    Quick poll. Would you? 1FT

    a) Llorente > Caroll
    b) Llorente Vardy Brunt > Caroll Aguero Holgat (-8)
    c)Vardy Brunt > Aguero Holgate(-4)
    d) Neither HOLD

Need to do Brunt to Holgate to fund (b) or (c)

The aguero move would mean captaining him at home ro hull.

My captain choices otherwise would be

    Sanchez Lukaku Vardy

I am afraid of losing an aguero haul. Would a simple Llorente to caroll suffice. A captain candidate also depending on how he survives this evenings game.

    Help appreciated

    Morning all!

Hoping for a massive lot of points tonight! Sanchez has "only" been captained by 9.9% of the game so could be a good rank increase if he does well, although I'm not sure what his live captaincy is.

A son haul would be nice too 😉

Morning Andy. Feel like Sanchez (C) at home to West Ham being this much of a differential is weird. Hope he's upfront.

        I hope so too.

I find it weird that Wenger wouldn't play him up front after he did so well, even with Welbeck back, he can play on the left.

But then who am I to question a Premier League manager, I'm just sat here posting on FFS after all 🙂

Welbeck hasn't impressed at all in the last 2, hoping Sanchez starts ahead of him. Giroud always lingering as well 🙁

Welbeck is definitely rusty, looks off the pace.

I didn't get to say it on the Scoutcast but I think that's one of the problems with not playing Giroud while Sanchez is on the left. Giroud can hold it up and play others in. Welbeck can't do that as effectively.

If he wants it badly enough Sanchez can haul big - but both teams look completely out of sorts. Managers on borrowed time too. Son looks a great bet tonight I'd say.

Vertonghen, Sanchez (c), Son, Alli, Firmino, Aguero, A.Carroll to go.

Hopefully the red turns green by tonight so I can keep this run going.

I'm with you on Sanchez, and I hope Son's points are all assists for Alli goals. Fearing the Sanchez, blank, however, and facing the bleak prospect of "what to do about Sanchez". Could really use for normal service to be resumed.

No one knows when it will be, but the Arsenal Southampton game needs to be scheduled for 35 or 36, as well as all the 37 games.

Most of the gw 37 ones are predictable, I'm just trying to avoid drafting anyone too soon if I don't really have to. Difficult to plan ahead too far. I've been unlucky with a few injuries to premature transfers this season & don't want to make those mistakes again (which means of course I will)

Long term plan for a GW37 striker is very tough to make at the moment due to injuries (Kane), form (Ibra) and returning players (Kun)

Anyone have any thoughts about this. I'd like to start planning now because there's considerations that need to be made (money/number of players from each team etc)

You'll have to use a transfer. Kane will be needed for the run in, but is injured now, and MUN have a DGW in between times.

No, I don't have Kun and tbh I am leaning towards other options as I want a good bench for 37, and Kun weakens it the most

With all the injuries in recent weeks, it's a waste of time planning that far ahead. By all means do when the fixtures are confirmed but be prepared to tear up that plan several times before GW37.
