Moving Target

Moving Target – Asmir Begovic

Bournemouth announced their first signing of the summer last Tuesday, with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic joining from Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million.

The 29-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term deal and will arrive at the Vitality Stadium on July 1.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Eddie Howe revealed how he believes Begovic’s quality and experience will prove invaluable over the next few years:

“Asmir is an outstanding goalkeeper who has proved himself capable of performing at the highest level over a number of years. He is at the right age and the right fit. He is a leader as well and exactly the kind of character you want in the team. Asmir will provide great competition to the excellent group of goalkeepers we already have here… I look forward to him being a very important player here for years to come.”

The History

Begovic’s big break came when playing for Southwest Sting Edmonton in Canada, where his family moved when he was aged just 10.

In 2003, the young goalkeeper earned a trial at Portsmouth and after two days was offered a contract, which he signed despite having another trial with Tottenham Hotspur already arranged.

After playing for the youth team, Begovic was then sent out on a series of loan spells to gain valuable first-team experience.

He spent time at Belgian top-flight side La Louviere in 2005/06, where he made two league appearances, before obtaining his UK visa in the summer of 2006, allowing the keeper to go out on loan to then League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

Begovic played three matches for The Silkmen before linking up with Bournemouth for the first time, where he made eight appearances with the club in League One.

He then enjoyed two separate loan spells at Yeovil Town, totalling 14 matches, before making his Premier League debut for Pompey in May 2009.

The 2009/10 season saw Begovic make six appearances during a loan spell with Championship side Ipswich Town, while he also played nine times for Portsmouth in the Premier League before moving to Stoke City for a fee of £3.25 million in February 2010.

It was with the Potters where Begovic established himself as a Premier League goalkeeper, making 173 appearances over five-and-a-half seasons, before moving to Chelsea in the summer of 2015 for a fee of £8 million.

But Begovic had to play second fiddle to first-choice stopper Thibaut Courtois. During his two-year spell in west London he only made 19 Premier League appearances, with the majority of those coming when the Belgian was unavailable due to both injury and suspension for the first half of the 2015/16 campaign.

The Prospects

Frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge, the move to Bournemouth should see Begovic become the first-choice goalkeeper at the Vitality Stadium.

Although Artur Boruc started 35 times in 2016/17, the new arrival’s pedigree and significant transfer fee indicates that he will grab the number one jersey.

Somewhat surprisingly, delving into the Opta data available from 2011/12 onwards, Begovic’s average of 31.2 minutes per save is only slightly superior to Boruc’s 35.2.

Yet the new boy’s FPL potential is highlighted by career-high scores of 144 points and 136 points in back-to-back seasons for Stoke City over 2012/13 and 2013/14.

Boruc’s top two hauls have been 125 points in 2013/14 and 120 points from last season, which included two penalty saves.

Bearing in mind that the Cherries conceded 67 times last year – the fifth-worst defence in the top-flight – there’s an argument that Begovic could start at 4.5 to offer a budget-friendly route into Howe’s backline.

Certainly, his arrival is expected to enhance the Fantasy prospects of the Bournemouth backline, with Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook and, potentially, Adam Smith perhaps all set to be priced at 5.0.

Daniels was the sixth highest scoring defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 134 points, with four goals and three assists making him the preferred option.

Yet the underlying stats show that Smith had the edge for both minutes per key pass (103.3 to 109.3) and shot (119.2 to 161.1).

Smith started last year at 4.5 to Daniels’ 5.0 and if we’re faced with the same scenario, then the former – who earned a goal and five assists – could prove a value option, should he find an end product.

But Cook could be the main beneficiary. Ranked first for clearances, blocks and interceptions in the Premier League last season, he collected more bonus points (17) than any defensive team-mate and produced more shots and efforts in the box than both Daniels and Smith.

Ultimately, Begovic’s price – relative to the rest of the Cherries’ rearguard – will be a key factor here. A cost of 4.5 could turn a few heads, though if he can improve upon last season’s total of 10 clean sheets, then the all-round potential on offer from his defensive team-mates may be more appealing.

This Sigurdsson to Leicester for £30m rumour sounds to me like Sanchez is leaving Arsenal, who in turn are signing Mahrez, so they are trying to work out how Leicester will use that money. Do you believe they would be happy to pay that for him?

We paid £400K for Mahrez. We might get £50m for him. Looks like we might be able to afoord it. £30m would be expensive for Siggy but he would represent better value than Musa or Slimani. At least he's a proven EPL performer.

Just sell Mahrez and spend £1m on another potential Mahrez. Half these guys only try when they're still not millionaires. Soon as they "make it" the effort disappears ... As the entire Leicester squad showed this season

Too simplistic. Not all footballers are motivated purely by cash. In fact very few are. I don't think City's performances earlier this last season were brought about by thinking about money.

I'd quite like Siggy to come to the KP. I also think Gray will blossom if given the chance when Mahrez leaves..

I don't think you will get £50M for him anymore. He had a weakish season and expressed his will to leave and that there is an agreement that he can leave. That's probably enough to drop the price to whatever decent sum the club that he wants to join is ready to pay.

I used the Kun move in 27 as a slightly more contentious, but more recognisable, idea. But equally Sanchez to Haz was DEF something we both did because we felt that that way the way to go.

    Discussion Topic #2:

Are there any trends you notice that seem to happen at the start of each season? As odd as they are...

Here are a couple ive noticed:

1)A Swansea midfielder normally starts the season strongly (its usually the new one signed too)
2)A Southampton fullback is usually a strong pick
3)A promoted team forward often a good investment

The one trend I always notice at the start of the season is the overhyping of Manchester United players especially their latest signings. Definitely going to avoid all United attacking assets until they prove themselves

Swans usually start strong. It may be due to heavy preseason work while some teams are slower out of the blocks. Guesswork on the promoted strikers, I usually avoid.

Generally, new signings often start slowly, big signings tend to disappoint early because of the huge expectations and the fact that they still have to get used to the new team and league.

Then there is the thing that big signings often have had an international tournament in summer. This time that is not the case, I expect the big hitters to start better than last season.

Picking the right small team forward, who will hog a majority of their few goals, is a good move. The promoted team forwards are the cheapest, so, I agree that one of them usually is the good choice.

The other two seem pretty accidental to me.

I went with Wickham as my small team, chepap forward at the beginning of the season since he was hogging goals in preseason. But that didn't work out. I think it might be an idea to avoid small team forwards unless they are bench fodder, at least until we know who's guaranteed starts and genuine goal threat in the new season

In other words, perhaps the money is better spent on 4 or 5 Full/wing-backs for a similar price and even consider 5-3-2 or something if you know the quality defs will start

Maybe, I'm very sympathetic of the defensive approaches. But it's often difficult to see which teams will have CS in early season. And you really have to identify these wingback and hope the manager doesn't tweak the system and drop them to bench after a couple of defeats. The top strikers of weak teams are often pretty secure picks too.

Ok. The problem with Wickham is that he's kinda cr*p. He has always been outright useless in serious games, apart from one flukey end of the season couple years back (I though you referred more to this, him being a successful occasional pick by random chance).

Don't pay too much mind to preseason. At best, it shows you who will play, but not even that necessarily.

I mean players who hog the goals+assists for their teams in competitive matches. See King the end of this season. His involvement was probably over 50%. Or Gray before. And so on. Of course, there will be those who fail, and there will be teams that score too little. But there are identifiable forwards available for 5.5 at max who will hog such a majority of their small teams decent chances that they will always score enough to bee valid 3rd strikers that enable you an otherwise strong team.

Definitely a promoted team forward for me. Andre Gray last year and Callum Wilson when Bournemouth came up. Gotta be Dwight Gayle this year, dependent on pricing for me.

Goals in a lower league. He played in premier league, and was not convincing at all. Which is the primary reason why I think they're buying a new no. 1 striker. The second reason are the rumours of Benitez looking for a new striker, like Michy or Gray. Either would definitely take the no. 1 spot. Even Tammy Abraham, I'd argue would command the starting spot soon, at least his loan deal would mean that Gayle would not be nailed on. The third reason is that they have a very nice transfer kitty to spend, so they will be signing what they think are necessary players.

Gonna go for Jordan Ayew if he's 5mil & Swans have nice fixtures, that late season form looked promising, 3 assists & 1 goal in 5 games

Man City usually open with a fairly easy fixture, Aguero always seems to score. That second bit looks like it could change this season, though.

Yeah, Ruth. One tailored for the money league in particular, one for the overall game. So he didn't file them both in the money league, but it's still cheating, because he wouldn't have to care about the OR with the ML team, he could focus on beating the rivals only.

Somebody else here could link you a thread with more details on this, if you want. Anyway, you understand, this kind of behaviour being accepted does reduce people's trust in the FFS ML's.

Yes, he comes out super righteous, as hypocritical cheats tend to do.

I agree with that over the course of a season but if I wildcard after 3 weeks, it seems like Aguero always starts strongly and Kane never does.

This year: Kane got 9 points from his first 3 games, Aguero got 24

        1. UnitedFan
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 11 months ago

Good point if wildcarding. Could be viable. However, others here have posted in the past of how Kane had partaken in Summer tournaments before the last two seasons, leading him to burnout. He'll have a good break this year and a proper pre-season to prepare. We could see tradition of slow starts to the season change. Also, assume Kun is 12.5 and Jesus 10.5. Is that too much money to invest in backing one attack to produce enough goals so that each of them profit? Remember there's others that will get their share of goals and assists for City. Another worry would be Pep's rotation. I'm concerned enough having one City attacker, nevermind two. But yeah, doubling up could be something to consider 🙂

Agree somewhat with the Wembley factor for Spurs. It's the reason I at least won't be starting with a defender of theirs. But I believe Kane is too good for it to be a major issue for him.

When eating, make sure you chew food slowly to reduce the amount of air you swallow. This will also help with digestion. Avoid chewing gum as it can also cause you to swallow more air than usual. You should also give up smoking, if you smoke.

If you get flatulence after eating, avoid all the notorious gas-producing foods including beans, cabbage, bran, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, prunes, raisins and brussels sprouts

Probably not. I tend to find that trying not to feel nervous tends to help.

TL;DR: drinking helps not farting in the short term. Long term: accept it as a long term condition and state it on any medical forms you have to fill out ("Flatulent and proud.")

Sure, pop concert crowds ain't too picky about the level of musical performance. Just saying that he can't hit the note on record either, and some of us appreciate the actual musical performance more than the cheeriness of the crowd. Not saying that you shouldn't have your priorities the other way round.

I don't think we'll sign a first choice LB. I think it will be Milner. Don't think it's ideal though. Mane will play LW if we bring in Salah, which means our left wing will have 2 right footed players.

      Milner will be a defender.

UNLESS they decide to give two slots of the 5 at the back as WB, then I think that Alonso will also be a defender. And a very expensive one at that.
