Scout Report – Aaron Mooy

Huddersfield Town secured the services of Aaron Mooy on a permanent deal on Friday, after the midfielder played a key role in their promotion winning season while on loan from Manchester City.

The Australian international joins the Terriers for a club-record fee of £8 million, which could rise to £10 million depending on add-ons, and has signed a three-year contract, with the option of an extra year’s extension.

Speaking to the club’s official website, head coach David Wagner expressed his joy at being able to wrap up a deal for a player whose performances were central to Huddersfield’s success last term:

“As I said many times last season, Aaron was right at the heart of our team. When he played well, we usually played well – and won! His performances for us understandably brought a lot of interest in him this summer, so it is a big statement that Aaron wants to return to us… He is still a great age and has space to improve, which is exciting for us too!”

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Mooy’s big break came in 2006 when he joined then Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers at the age of 16.

Mooy stayed with the club for the next four years, before departing at the end of his contract in July 2010 due to being unable to break into the first-team squad.

The midfielder joined Scottish Premier League side St Mirren, and made 21 first-team appearances over the next two seasons, registering once goal and three assists, before returning to his homeland with newly formed A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers in June 2012.

He scored four goals in 49 appearances, before moving to Melbourne City, where his career really took off.

Mooy registered 18 goals and 13 assists in 53 matches over a two-year period, with his performances during the 2015/16 season in particular, when he was named PFA Player of the Year, leading to the move to City in June 2016.

The midfielder was immediately sent out on loan to Huddersfield though, with Mooy producing four goals and seven assists in 48 league outings including the playoffs as the Terriers gained promotion to the Premier League.

After representing Australia at U20 and U23 levels, scoring six goals in 13 appearances, Mooy marked his senior debut with a goal and assist in a 9-0 win over Guam in December 2012.

Mooy has played 25 times for his country, producing five goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Given that Mooy was never likely to break into the first-team picture at City, it came as little surprise to see Huddersfield’s Player of the Year return to the John Smith’s Stadium.

An all-round midfielder, Mooy boasts impressive technical ability, with his passing one of his main strengths, although his lack physicality and pace could be more apparent in the top flight. The Australian is, however, strong in a challenge and ranked fourth for tackles among Championship midfielders last season.

More importantly from a Fantasy perspective, he boasts tremendous quality through his set-piece delivery, and also took two of his side’s four penalties last term, scoring one and missing another.

Mooy impressively made more key passes (102) and successful tackles (114) than any team-mate, playing predominantly as the deep-lying playmaker in central midfield.

His output in the Championship, along with the fact Wagner has turned him into a more rounded midfielder, having played much of his football in Australia as a No 10, suggests a likely price tag of between 5.0 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

However, interest in Mooy could be drowned out by the attention given to another potential midfield target: Elias Kachunga, who was Huddersfield’s top scorer last season with 12 goals.

The DR Congo international made 36 of his 44 league appearances in the attacking midfield positions, with the other eight coming as a central striker.

He may well be classified as a midfielder in FPL then, and if priced similarly to Mooy, could hold the upper hand.

Wagner’s side struggled badly for goals last season, managing just 56 across the 46 league matches, suggesting that despite their favourable opening schedule, we should be wary opting for Huddersfield attackers as budget options.

The Terriers begin their campaign away to Crystal Palace, while over the first eight Gameweeks, they face just one of last season’s top seven (NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn, TOT, swa).

So should either Mooy or Kachunga impress in pre-season, there’s every chance they may be viable options as a cheap fourth or fifth midfielder, with Derby County’s Tom Ince potentially another option, with a fee agreed for the winger on Friday.

Mooy certainly looks capable of making the step up to the Premier League from a technical standpoint, and with his set-piece duties so prominent, he could be a factor in the coming season, particularly if he is the designated penalty taker.

But with other possible candidates in both midfield and attack and further new Huddersfield signings to come, Fantasy managers will hope that pre-season can provide some cast-iron evidence of a stand-out option.

I don't know really, but I'm guessing Morata if he signs. Mata, Herrera and Martial are decent penalty takers too.

I don't stick to one formation - I select my XI based on fixtures.

However, I think I'll have 4 at the back as often as 3, and I'll have one premium striker, one mid-priced one and one ultra-cheap non-player to allow me a strong midfield.

So my formations will range from 451, 352, 442.

Gerrard ->> Milner ->> Hendo probably

I remember Lambert took one in pre season once who had an amazing record in pens but missed for us.
Coutinho ain't a good pen taker from what we have seen.Does the pressure of taking a pen for Liverpool is too much?
I have seen different players taking pens for us only to mostly miss .

Kudos to Gerrard and Milner really

Hopefully Hendo will be the next good one for a decade.

It's always been an economic term to me: socialist through to communist being on the "left" whereas ultra-free marketeers on are on the "right".

Seems to have just become a term now in certain online circles to just bash anyone over the head with who is moderately socially progressive.

Word meanings change over time the left is known as commies while the right are conservatives.

I certainly wouldn't call them progressive and I'm not even American.

What if I advocated free market economics and I also felt strongly about social issues like gay marriage, transgender rights, women's rights etc.?

Where would that leave me on the scale.

I just think the bastardisation of the term is unhelpful. The world isn't so binary.

So, the Olympique Lyonnais chairman Jean-Michel Aulas debunks the information that Lacazette is in London to sign for Arsenal.

      https://twitter.com/JM_Aulas/status/881450256554184704

Arsenal did make a bid, but it was too low and got turned down.

      Now, that's more like Arsenal.

Anyway, it would be just like Arsenal to not bid enough, so I kind of believe that there are good chances this just won't go through. 😆

They should just pile up the cash and get their player. For once.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the best formation in the Telegraph Fantasy Football game?

I see that last season's winner started with a 5-3-2 formation and i wondered if the TFF game was more suited to heavier investment in defence compared to the FPL game.

      Any thoughts?

      1. diesel001
        • 7 Years

3-4-3 IMO with emphasis on goalscoring midfielders. The key with TFF is picking players that will play PL and FA Cup games and choosing players who you stick with over the long run. 30 transfers is not a lot given you can't WC like in FPL.

Use your transfers to manage injuries and switch formation. For example I had Costa-Lukaku-Kane and switched to Kane up front nearer the end of the season because of the form of Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Hazard, Alli and Eriksen.

Agree with diesel - the telegraph game is not fundamentally different to FPL with the higher point scorers up top. I finished in the top 10 a couple of seasons back primarily with 3-4-3, had a core team and rotated a cheap defender and striker based on fixtures. Other transfers were a combo of fixtures, form and injuries but you do need some patience.

The other way you get an edge over casual players is by planning transfers for the latter kick offs as you can do get points for the transfered in player in that week.

He makes a few mistake sure but Mignolet makes way more and Joe is one of the best shot stoppers around and England's number 1. Hart is probably the only quality goalie that is available for sale this season and he will most definitely be an upgrade to liverpools current keepers.

Of late and especially for England he has been appalling. His positioning is all over the shop - there was a great video analysing him v De Gea but can't find it.

One of those Griffiths FKs was nowhere near the corner of his goal and he failed to get near it like the Bale FK in the Euros.

Not saying he couldn't be good and hadn't been in the past but he has lost his way.

Hart has probably also made the most appearances..

If you don't rate Migs/Karius that's totally fine, but to suggest Hart is hilarious.

By the way, I'm sure Hart has made more errors leading to a chance + errors leading to a goal than both those Liverpool keepers 🙂

          GK: ?????, Karius, Bogdan
          LB: Bertrand, Milner
          RB: Clyne, Alexander-Arnold
          CB: VVD, Matip, Lovren, Klavan
          DM: Henderson, Can, Lucas
AM: Salah, Mane, Coutinho, Lallana, Wijnaldum, Grujkic
          FW: Firmino, Origi, Ings

Could well prove to be over time he has time on his side for sure but for someone who has had one full season in a top european league to call him a bargain now would be premature.. i mean pogba was a shining light in a juventus side that won 3 consecutive league titles and was a world star yet was branded a rip off before he had kicked a ball for united. Comparing the wealth of both liverpool and united too. Strange one

Well, those who said Pogba was a ripoff were wrong. The economy being as it is, ManU beat the competition for signing Pogba. If Liverpool beats the competition for Keita's signature, that much better for them. Not saying he's as guaranteed as Pogba though. Still, there are a plenty of teams looking for a top notch two way CM, and the one who gets the best one available wins the race. Price is secondary.

I hope they do get him for that price(£70m for a nobody). Then we can slag them like they did us for Pogba.

He isn't really a nobody though if you followed Bundesliga. The money is ridiculous for someone with just one season but those who have seen him play realize that there isn't many players like him in the game right now. Liverpool know that if he plays another season like last year for RB, and is also in the UCL to get his name out there even more, they won't be able to get him. Then it's the likes of Real Madrid. That is the risk they might have to take, I think it'll be a genius buy, but of course he could also flop, because with that price tag nothing short of dominance will suffice.

                  Agree completely.

This is Liverpool's best chance before Barcelona, Madrid or Bayern take him next summer for his release clause.

Totally agree with all that. We over paid significantly for pogba to take madrid out of the equation given we had no lure of cl football at the time. But that was ridiculous....

You know me Nidge I am no fan of massive transfer fees. If this deal goes ahead, which I don't think it will, I would expect the highest midfield performances on a consistent basis.

That being said, I think it's perhaps on par or just below the market value for a player like him. Thiago, Verratti etc would probably cost more than that. Pogba 's fee has totally inflated every top midfielder's price.

He only has 1 season of top level football behind him but it was an exceptional season. As VS10_ said, one of the best in Europe. Only 22 and would definitely be under the right manager as he'll be able to play free flowing footy and develop.

If we signed him, developed him and the biggest club came calling, we could be looking at £100m fee for him in a few years.

I just don't see Leipzig selling.

Im not calling it ridiculous btw i accepted long ago the way the game is going and for the high potential players with their whole careers in front of them they can prove to be valuable investments. It's the hyporicy i have an issue with. Pogba had 3 league titles in the bag by the time we paid 89 for him and was a rip off in most peoples eyes.. and while he was hot and cold this season he finished with another 2 trophies and a winning goal in the el final. The only ridiculous thing surrounding pogba was letting him go in the first place mate

If Naby moves for 60-70 with Pogba 89 I definitely know who'd I rather have tbh.

My biggest issue with Pogba is that he is very inconsistent and isn't disciplined from a positional point of view. And if Pogba was moving for £89m this summer, it wouldn't have been called ridiculous as much as last summer. His transfer has set the bar for top end midfielders.

How high would have he been your list last summer if you had the choice of spending 89m on a midfielder? Kroos, Modric, Verratti, Thiago would be higher for a start

We all have our strengths and weaknesses mate i havent seen enough of keita to comment. Pogba for those flaws you mention hasnt done half bad in his career so far mind you. I doubt tactical discipline as important as it is was as high on the agenda when looking at pogbas attributes bring the ball forward.. the key here is recognising this and building around him.

Reportedly, Barça bid €80M for Verratti and said it's their final offer. If PSG takes that, Verratti isn't more expensive than Keita. But, I haven't heard PSG actually considering taking that bid. And why would they, really? At current markets, they'd struggle to find a replacement. They would anyway, if they want a one like Verratti, because he is kinda unique player.

Certainly. But if PSG want a one like Verratti, they can't have a new one for €80M. For me, that's no deal. Anyway, the point is, Naby Keita is actually priced very high at the moment. But maybe none of these others is available.

That said, for a meagre €40M is available that lad Seri from Nice, and Tolisso just moved for a similar sum. These are also excellent players, and Tolisso more proven (not necessarily better) than Keita. I think Ancelotti called Tolisso the best CM on market, and he should know something about Keita. Seri is a Barça plan, and should fit seamlessly. I dunno. Just mean, Keita really is priced at the very very high end. Tells about how he is valued by other clubs, but also about how rich Leipzig is.

Mesut Ozil this year scored 167 points and was priced 9.5m, he in 2015/16 Season scored 200 points.

Considering he is the 11th Top point scorer (Mids) this season and out of those 11, 7 mids were cheaper than him, He should have a price drop next season.

What does he prove by moving and excelling at Everton? Think he'll sit it out this season and then it depends on how happy Mourinho/the club is with him just sitting there collecting one massive paycheck after another. You could see subtle JM jibes in interviews if they need him to move on, but I just don't know why he should take a pay cut and move his family etc at this stage of his career.
