Scout Report – Sandro Ramirez

Everton’s busy summer in the transfer window continued yesterday with the signing of Spanish U21 international forward Sandro Ramirez from Malaga after his £5.3 million release clause was triggered.

The 21-year-old penned a four-year deal with the Toffees and has been handed the No. 9 shirt.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Ronald Koeman revealed some of the qualities he believes Sandro will add to his side:

“There was a lot of interest in Sandro because, of course, he’s a goalscorer, he’s young and he has a big future in the game. We have been trying to bring in good players so we can have greater productivity in the team and he will bring that. He will bring a lot of good qualities and he’s a really good goalscorer, too.”

The History

After starting out at his hometown club Las Palmas, Ramirez joined Barcelona’s youth set-up in 2009 at the age of 14.

He progressed through the ranks to feature for Barcelona B before scoring the only goal as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Villarreal on his first-team debut in August 2014.

Ramirez made six further substitute appearances over the next few months, scoring one goal, but spent the rest of the season back in the ‘B’ side.

The 2015/16 season saw Ramirez continue to struggle to establish himself in the first-team squad. He made 20 appearances in all competitions, with the majority coming off the bench, as he registered three goals and two assists.

Barcelona decided to release Ramirez last summer, La Liga outfit Malaga signing the attacker on a three-year contract.

Ramirez enjoyed a sensational campaign, totalling 14 goals and five assists in 30 league appearances, playing almost exclusively as a central striker.

Capped at U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels by Spain, scoring 13 goals in 18 appearances, Ramirez was part of the Spanish side that lost 1-0 to Germany in the final of the UEFA European U21 Championship.

The Prospects

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin the only forward other than Romelu Lukaku currently in the Everton squad, the need for Koeman to bolster his attacking options was plain to see.

That’s also compounded by the fact that Lukaku and Ross Barkley – who is also expected to depart over the summer – were the only Everton players to score at least five times last term, netting 25 and five goals respectively.

Lukaku admitted last month that he does not expect to be playing his football at Goodison Park this season, so the addition of Sandro is certainly a welcome one.

The Spaniard may only arrive in England with one season of experience as a regular starter, but he has considerable potential, capable of playing centrally as he did last term, or out wide as was the case during much of his time at Barcelona.

Spanish football expert David Cartlidge outlined some of Sandro’s main strengths – his goalscoring instincts, the ability to hold the ball up and bring his team-mates into play – while the Spaniard himself cited what he sees as the qualities that will see him thrive in the Premier League:

“My key strength is goalscoring. It’s always good to bring goals to a team and that’s what I’m hoping to do. My game is making runs off the ball, trying to find space, putting in a lot of effort and running hard. I think that’s an advantage in the Premier League.”

While standing at just 5ft 7 in tall, Sandro possesses reasonable strength, which allows him to shield the ball effectively, and with his speed can quickly spin away from defenders to initiate attacks.

From a Fantasy perspective, his free-kick taking abilities certainly catch the eye, with five of his 14 league goals last term coming from outside the box.

Sandro boasts terrific technique when striking a dead-ball and looks a genuine threat every time he shoots from distance.

That ability perhaps explains why he impressively averaged a shot every 25.17 minutes last season, better than Lukaku (29.7).

The Belgian’s strengths as a poacher are illustrated by the fact he fared better in terms of minutes per attempt inside the box, averaging one every 40.83 minutes, compared to 53.86 for Sandro.

In terms of creativity, there was little to choose between the pair, with Lukaku registering a key pass every 69.51 minutes, slightly superior to Sandro (72.38).

Given that Lukaku totalled 25 goals and six assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season, those underlying statistics are pretty encouraging regarding Sandro’s prospects heading into the new campaign.

The difficulty in judging Sandro’s appeal for 2017/18 is the fact the Toffees look sure to add to their striking resources this summer should Lukaku depart as expected.

Bearing in mind Sandro’s age and relative lack of first-team experience, the Toffees could well look to add an older striker, with AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca and Napoli’s Duvan Zapata among the forwards linked, with a move for Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud also mooted in recent days.

Koeman’s penchant for target men up top could also dictate where the new boy plays. Essentially, Sandro won a mere eight headers in La Liga last season and bearing in mind that Koeman has opted for the likes of Lukaku and Graziano Pelle as his preferred lone strikers at Everton and Southampton respectively, the new boy could be utilised in a central support berth or out wide.

The timing of such a move may have an influence on the price handed to Sandro in FPL, with the Spaniard perhaps set to come in around the 7.0 to 8.0 mark and potentially handing us a viable option in the mid-price bracket.

But the horrendous fixture list following an opening day home clash against Stoke City (mci, che, TOT, mun) means the 21-year-old is unlikely to feature in our Gameweek 1 plans unless he makes a very strong impression during pre-season.

In addition, it is often wise to show caution when considering new arrivals to the Premier League. We can perhaps be less wary of genuine world class talents but we can’t put Sandro in that bracket just yet. Only one of top 25 points scorers in FPL last season were without Premier League experience – Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But providing that Sandro can settle into life on Merseyside, he looks to have the technical ability and desire to flourish at Goodison Park.

Sandro’s signing could be one of the best value moves made this summer, and if he can secure a regular starting place and is priced favourably, he may well be a factor in FPL once the tough early fixtures are out of the way.

Can be superb at times but also goes missing at times which perhaps is what you'd expect for a young winger. Has ability but his attitude has also been questionable.

He has spent a lot of time playing wide but for me longer term I'd see him more as a number 10. He has a great touch and a really good eye for a pass but probably needs to add more a goal threat to his game - doesn't shoot as often as he should. It';; be interesting to see how he gets on in the Championship.

He'd fallen out of favour since the new manager came in, partly due to his workrate not being what Caixinha wants and also because of the contract situation.

He's a good player with potential to develop further. He divides opinion amongst a lot of our support although Rangers fans aren't noted for being the most patient! I personally am sorry to see him leave.

For those of you who can't wait until tomorrow for the Sky fantasy game, it is possible to get access to the game today.

When you go to their site click on the link for the Fantasy Six-a-Side game and when you get to the Six-a-Side site click on the tiny Fantasy Football icon at the very top of the page and that should get you into the game.

This i reckon is going to be another season where we are going to be spoilt for striker choice. The way it looks, there are 4 legit striker options that are going to be available which weren't fully relevant last year.

Arsenal - We will finally see a nailed on Arsenal striker post RVP
United - Ibra did well as a nailed on United striker and that #9 position was left empty after he got injured. This position opens up too.
Liverpool - We never had this option last year. Firmino should be classified as one and could be the lone option in the 9m striker bracket.
West Ham Striker - Again, never in our thoughts last season. Chicha/Gru here and we have another option.

Che - Like for like replacement. Lukaku in place of Costa.
Everton - Sandro Ramirez should be priced not very heavily. Gru linked too.
    City - Jesus/ Aguero
    Spurs - Kane
Leicester - Vardy could come down in price, bringin him back into our frame of mind.

Add to that the likes of Josh King, Benteke, Austin/Gabby, JayRod and i reckon 3-4-3 will be the primary formation this year and not 3-5-2.

    1. Dreams

Same thinking here. 3-4-3 looks like the way to go.

Certainly the options are a plenty. But then, the prices of the prime strikers are high, so maybe a 3-5-2 or even a 4-4-2 is likely if you want, say, both a City forward and Kane.

Firmino not, imo. If you look at how much he would have scored as a forward, that doesn't warrant 9m+ price necessarily. Could be at 8.5, even 8.0. Particularly as he may be occasionally POO, with Sturridge staying and Origi being in the mix too.

^ This. The ones at the top 6 clubs will be expensive. One, max two - if you go for 3 you won't be spending more than 8m on your best midfielder to go with your cheapskate defence.

It depends where the value is. I hope the body of people choosing pricing/positioning have a really off year!

Is Mark now consulted on such matters since the scout's affiliation with the official site? As a rule in previous years the community would like to keep potential exploitations of value on the down low, giving our lot the biggest chance to succeed.

My biggest hope is any trading between PL clubs occurs after prices are locked.

          Mbappe
          Aubameyang
          Lacazette
          Benzema
          Morata

And Morata at the bottom by a distance because I've only ever seen him play bad games....in fact I've no idea how he manages to even score tbh from what I've seen.

I see it as it stands.
First two had very good season so they are the best out of those.
Lacazette is very good player and I think he can improve a lot.
Mbappe is still young and he had few very good games but he can be next Martial.
Benzema had his best time. For last few years he is poor and have a lot of bad games.
Morata was never a top class striker for me. He still has time but for now he is the worst out of those.

That's very difficult. Different types of forwards, so it depends a lot on what type of team you want to put them into. Mbappé is certainly the most talented, but Benzema and Morata better international level at the moment, experience and tactical intelligence counts and Mbappé doesn't maybe have much of that yet. But Benzema has been a bit down since his problems with justice and NT, and Morata on the other hand is his backup. Lukaku and Auba are overhyped and the ones who have the most obvious flaws in their game, but obviously if you're playing counter attack football with fast changes of game, then PEA is class CF, and if you need a target man, Lukaku is the best of the lot. Lacazette may be the overall best player, though, the one who combines different qualities and is definitely useful for any team.

Auba has 40 goals on each of his last two seasons. He isn't a complete striker, but a bit funny to see him at the bottom when someone like Morata has barely even played in that time.

Aubameyang and Benzema are a class above the rest I would say. They are relied upon players for major clubs, performing against big clubs as well as against minnows. Benzemas hold up play and assist potential is Incredible, while you can't argue With Aubas goalscoring record.

Lukaku is solid, but struggles against the better sides and against established defenses. Lacazette I have not seen. Mbappe looked electric this season, but that's the only one so he doesn't quite warrant a top position.

Morata has been unable to nail down a starting position for years (started 14 - 16 - 11 - 3 - 5 League matches in the past five Seasons), which doesn't bode too well. He is a decent back up but his goal rate is inflated by starting primarily against the worse teams.

      So for me,
      1 Aubameyang
      1 Benzema
      2.5 Lukaku
      3 Mbappe
      4 Morata
      ? Lacazette.

It really is a problem in valuing Morata that he has not really been a consistent starter. Yet the fact is that he has played for top clubs in top competitions against top opposition and succeeded (particularly for Juve in CL).

Basing it on current form as well as projecting the future a little bit, Morata and Lacazette are hard to rank both between them and against the rest due to playing time and quality of opposition respectively.

Lacazette undergoing his medical at Arsenal right now should ensure another day of not moaning by Arsenal fans if he signs.

That'll be two days of not moaning this year...once when they won the FA cup and now this.

Normal service will no doubt resume tomorrow.

To be fair a lot of us still moaned the day we won the fa cup, to the tune of 'oh no, that definitely means Wenger is staying' 😀

Our issue is normally with just seeing what obviously needs fixing, year after year, and the club/Wenger not addressing those issues adequately or at all, we pay enough in ticket prices afterall

I don't mind him staying at all tbh, i was slightly tongue in cheek, he is an excellent manager, and having supported Arsenal for a few decades i remember the football we used to play. I've always been a trust in Wenger type of supporter, and be careful what you wish for, i think i just got a bit fed up last season after seeing a few years of the same mistakes in the transfer market and lack of tactical nouse in some games - hopefully this year the club will stop acting like a bank and remember we are a football club rather than an investment project. I'll be right behind Wenger and the team as always.

I think the vast majority of the Wenger out camp either weren't around in the old days, or are fickle glory hunters, or don't understand how the economics of football have changed over the last c.12 years (ie money clubs like city/chelsea who don't operate on an organic business growth basis, ie they can splash the cash and not have to make the books balance necessarily)

Hope we make the few signings i think we need, Lacazette, Lemar, maybe a quality CB, and someone who can take the role of Cazorla if he is really crooked for another year.

The two first are much better than the others.

Kane might not be considered top 3 by many, but in my eyes there are few strikers in the world that are more prolific than Kane. He has done it for three years now. I am not english, and have no bias to english players, if anyone thinks that. I will admit that he has only really shown it in the prem.

Hell of a long way to go...so much can change but as you say Sky are simply defending a good position and it's all a bit boring. Interesting that the yellow jersey didn't hang back when Froome went down though...that inter team rivalry might get interesting. It's a pity they haven't gone heavier on the mountains this year...that's where the real action is; btw before a mod mentions it, don't forget we have our own designated page for TDF stuff!

Question: As your a fan, what Arsenal players would you be considering from GW1? Fixtures are a mixed bag.

Very tough. We'll have to see the mood around the Emirates when the season is nearer to kick off, too.
Historically we start pretty poorly - think we've lost the last 3 opening day fixtures - so I'd be waiting until we get into our stride. I'd possibly stick to Sanchez, though I am really liking the idea of Ozil (who might be downed in price... if 9.0 he's a serious steal) feeding Lacazette in a Fab-Costa circa 14/15 esque combo. I guess maybe 1 or 2 for now.

That said - and I'll be talking about this on the pod later on 2n - I have a theory that we will be the cornerstone of many an FPL team this year, with AW perhaps prioritising a return to the Champions League via the top 4 (i.e. 4th) rather than through the UEL. This could mean B team for the UEL, and best XI (whatever that turns out to be) in the Prem. This might mean that they are our "Chelsea" this year (big team w/ little to no Euro involvement).

TL;DR: on GW1, 1 will do, 2 maybe, but for swathes of the season I reckon we'll see a triple up of Gunners in many a RMT

Nice reply, thanks. Currently thinking Sanchez if he stays. If not, I might even consider starting with none. Might look at Ramsey if priced well. Ozil like you said offers promise but I'd probably have to see a little bit of form from him first for his price range.

Yeah does anyone know if Ramsey will even start? I have seen him in a lot of ppl's drafts but too me he is a rotation risk. Ozil is the only Ars player im considering for GW1.

Not sure myself. But he does fit their latest formation and had some great performances and the end of last season. Plus he seems to be a favourite of Wenger's.

Will Özil be affected by the ongoing drama around his contract?

I am tempted to get him tbh.

It's looking like Ozil will stay on - primarily because there are no other suitors for his signature, if reports are to be believed! Always weakens a player's hand if they haven't got an alternative offer to bargain with, no?

Could be Lacazette. Probably 2m cheaper than Sanchez. Ozil will be cheaper still and possibly the best value.

Depends on who is on penalties for me, I would imagine it will be Lacazette.

Arsenal spending Sanchez money on Lacazette. I would much rather of kept Alexis but I guess it is the gunners after all.

Can't go wrong at less than 6 million but not a big fan of Sandro Ramirez. Mega powerful long shot but little else, first touch almost always puts him on the back foot. Tends to mess up the touch but do enough to hold off the defender and find a pass backwards. Certainly not an adequate Lukaku replacement and I'm sure Koeman knows that.

Think Iborra on the other hand is a quality signing (not for fantasy). Incredibly slow but adept at everything else, would've loved to see him under Pulis.
