The ScoutCast – Episode 227 – Lift Off

An unprecedented summer podcast arrives following the Fantasy Premier League launch, as Jonty, Andy and Luke join me in the afterglow of a joyous day.

Technically “on the beach” and fighting back to full fitness, we nonetheless brave the airwaves to chime in on the price list, reclassified players and some early formation dancing.

We glory in the potential bargains, lament the overpriced and make bold claims on our lineups that will doubtless be reversed come August 11. If Andy has Chris Brunt in his Gameweek 1 squad, I’ll eat my Free Hit chip.

The FPL Draft game gets a rinsing, and we end the show with our proud declaration of our team ID’s. A conclusion that leaves me feeling rather inadequate even before a ball has been kicked.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Heavy on top. Might work. Snodgrass has 3 difficult away games, would maybe try to change him and bring him in after those matches.

realistically you would have to play 2 x 4.5 mids and 3 x 4.5 defs - it is possible but you would need to strike gold with your 'enablers'.

Nope. Also worried about not having Aguero. City can be explosive, whereas Man Utd are generally far less so.

Hello guys! Trying to get my team together, this is what I have so far, any thoughts? :

    Courtois (Maenpaa)
Lindolf - Cedric - McAuley (Yedlin, Hudson)
    Ali - Coutinho - Mikky - Willan - Redmon
    Lukaku - Lacazette

    1. Jafalad

I'm not a fan of that gk strategy - would rather have two semi-decent starters in case of injury. Try Fosski.

Prefer Dawson to McGauley who must be on his last legs at 38.

Mikky/Willan/Redmond are not reliable heavy hitters in ff and Lacazette needs watching first.

      Not a fan. 3/10.

      1. Maddamotha
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Then you have the changing dilemma, GKs not very often injured. The Dawson assesment I could agree on. With Hazard out, and Costa most likely wont play, I see Willian as a good value at 7m, at least until Hazard comes back. Could go with Pedro at 8m too.

Was Mikky's first season last year, didn't play that much, and he's much more settled in now. Think he will be come good this season. I see people getting Pogba, is he better value at 8m? After all Mikky is more offensive of the two. Cant afford all the heavy hitters either, and Redmond have decent fixtures in the beginning as well.

Could ofc downgrade Lacazette to Firminho and work from there..

Might opt to play 2 forward either 442 or 352. Not many options for 3rd forward slot.

Might consider Jrod/Deeney in for Fletcher if playing 343.

You should improve fletcher if playing 343. Your 4th and 5th defenders are not good enough to start as 4 defenders every week
          Ramsey willian are risks

Defence not strong enough for regular 4 at the back. Upgrade Fletcher to Deeney, he has very attractive first 3 fixtures and is good value compared to other strikers imo.

I know it's high risk but has anyone considered a starting defence of 3 Southampton players?
With two Burnley defenders to cover them in week 6 and 12 they could be great up until a week 13 wildcard.
    Gives something like this...

    Foster, Elliot
    Bertrand, Stephens, Cedric, (Mee, Ward)
    Eriksen, Pedro, Ramsey, Knockeart, (RLC)
    Kane, Lukaku, Defoe

Cleansheets are definitely more fixture dependent than attacking returns, i would expect the Southampton defenders to average at least 4 points a game over this period. Wouldn't be much good for last man standing though.

I just prefer Eriksen's stats, one season he'll have a bit more luck with all those long shots that he takes. It's really difficult to separate the two though, some of my drafts have Eriksen and Alli rather than Eriksen and Kane.

I'm thinking the same, Eriksen +3M might be better than Kane.
Alli is considered cheap and one of the first names on many teams, still Eriksen at the same price had the same PPG as him last season - and you hardly see him in RMTs..

Costa has been given extra time off by Chelsea and has been the only one not required to attend the first training sessions.

Sounds distinctly iffy to me and that the transfer saga is far from settled, As it currently stands Batshuayi may well become a player imo unless things start to move apace to replace Costa.

If you don't there could be a repeat of last tie you were champions - managerial meltdown and lost season. At this moment I'm wary of investing in any Chelsea personnel.

In contrast, it could be a year of young Chelsea midfield loanees proving exceptional value. After 4.5 RLC, keep an eye on 4.5 Chalobah who is interesting Swansea and Watford.

Then there's Zouma to Stoke but at 5.5 he wouldn't be good value.

The squad is a lot stronger and in a better mindset than under Mourinho . So I'm sure it won't be a total meltdown. We may just struggle up top if we can't find a replacement fast. Not sure if Conte backs Bats so wouldn't be surprised seeing someone like Pedro or Haz start season at Striker.

Draft #4 been trying to work on a more balanced team I think I'm nearly on track at this point

    Foster Gomes
    Lindelof Dawson Yedlin Dunk Rangel
    Kdb Pogba Zaha RLC Tadic
    Kane Firmino Lacazette

    Thoughts?
Not entirely convinced on the last 3 in midfield myself might have to work on that

I get as excited as the next person about selecting my squad pre-season - but am mindful of the fact that I (and many others) will inevitably have wild-carded by gw 6.

Not that my initial squad is necessarily bad - but by then we generally have enough data to make an informed judgement regarding form, bandwagons, bargains, starters etc.

With that in mind, what strategies can you advise to maximise our initial squads for those first few gameweeks?

    My initial thoughts are:

    - Minimize the number of risks/punts you take. Why take punts at this stage when you can wait a few weeks and see how they are performing before buying? This applies to players who may not be nailed-on as well as new signings who are untested in the Premier League.

    - Beware any potential price-drops. A 0.1 price drop can have a considerable impact on an early wildcard. Therefore avoid relatively high-ownership bandwagon players who are unproven and not nailed-on (an example might be Loftus-Cheek). If these players disappoint over the first few weeks, they could well drop in price quickly. If they do well - you can bring them in quickly.

    - Form is hard to judge at the beginning of the season, so early fixtures are worth paying attention to.

    - Largely ignore the form of teams during pre-season. Seems to have no correlation with form once the season begins. I also wouldn't read too much into individual form pre-season - although the last few friendlies are often a good indicator of who has a chance of being a regular starter.

    - Be cautious of players who have played tournaments over the summer (example might be Sanchez - although he might be the exception to the rule.....), or have been recovering from long-terms injuries (example might be Mane)

    Any other thoughts?

      Seems pretty good to me.

Another thought. Does one really want to spend a transfer on a goalkeeper? Try to get these right.

Yup, can't really argue with any of that. Still nabbing RLC though!

Like your team not sold on defense though. Also I'd try find another .5 to get another 4.5 keeper

Way too heavy in attack, which makes the rest very weak.
Downgrade at least one of your strikers

You should have to answer at least 10 questions and offer 10 opinions before you are allowed to post a RMT.
    20 posts (min) per RMT.

If there were no RMTs, this site would be useless.

You need to take another view.

The separate thread for RMT's is the best compromise imo.

So people who need guidance, need provide guidance to others before they post on this site. That's shrewd.

Nope. You are assuming that everyone who posts a RMT has zero football knowledge.

How does this look for a 4-3-3

    Foster
    Lindelof Trippier Luiz Cedric
    Ali Sane Phillips
    Kane Kaku Firmino

    Myhill RLC Carroll 4.0 defender

Concerned about no Arsenal attack but dunno how I can squeeze in there?

Got the Chelsea / spurs / united defence covered + saints and WBA for fixtures.

Looks pretty good. Considering going 4-4-2 myself. Sane > Ramsey, Alli > De Bruyne would spread your coverage.

    Repost.

    Second Draft. 4-4-2.

    Begovic Foster
    Lindelof Dawson Cedric Trippier Clark
    KDB Alli Coutinho Mooy RLC
    Lukaku Lacazette Ayew

    Thoughts? Nothing in the bank.

    Thanks.

It's good. With the possible exception of Ayew they are all starters, so you have cover for injuries and rotation (assuming Walker walks, of course).

Cheers. Any nailed on strikers in the 4.5-5m range?

If Walker stays, I will switch Trippier to another 5.5m defender.

What's the thinking behind Ayew. Is it the Llorente injury or some other reason he might play.

I think Ayew is nailed on. He had a very good season at Villa and he did alright with what chances he got under Clement. i think he will start on the right wing.

Actually it might be the lack of better options 😛

I see Mustafi in a lot of teams, is he nailed?

If we were playing our best personnel in a 343, I'd play a back three of Holding-Koscielny-Monreal, but I guess Mustafi is better at RCB?

    I'm getting Kolasinac.

I can see no way in which Holding starts ahead if Mustafi.

Ah, maybe then it is just me. I feel Holding is more composed on the ball than Mustafi is, and way mature for his age.

Think I agree, Holding has arguably been one of the reasons they finished so well last season.

Mustafi - Kosc - Monreal, surely? Holding is a great talent, but I think he still is a backup player.

Will need to monitor Arsenal back line pre-season. Wenger's not even sure if he goes 3 or 4 at the back yet.

Prefer Kolasinac...maybe a bit later though. Lindelof has better fixtures in the start, but not as attacking.
