Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Romelu Lukaku breaks his duck while Antonio Valencia sees red as Manchester United warm up for the forthcoming derby clash with a second successive victory.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart might be close to a loan move, but it is up front where West Ham need fresh blood as they are held to a goalless draw in their opening pre-season encounter.

Here are the notes from the latest matches.

Real Salt Lake 1 Manchester United 2

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United account with the winner in an increasingly bad-tempered and mildly bizarre match in Utah.

The Belgian forward, with 45.2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, is currently the most popular player in the game and he latched on to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass to score before the break in United’s second pre-season match of the summer.

The lively Mkhitaryan had earlier equalised for the Red Devils – his second strike of the US tour – following good work by Jesse Lingard. The 8.0-priced Armenian is currently in fine form and, with just 3.2% ownership, is doing his best to plug his differential credentials ahead of United’s very kindly set of opening fixtures.

Lingard (6.0) is another who has so far impressed over United’s two fixtures.

A completely new line-up took to the pitch for the second-half – their opponents had already made the same move just 33 minutes into the encounter – but the visitors finished the match with just ten men when Antonio Valencia was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Salt Lake’s Sebastian Saucedo.

Even then, referee Allen Chapman gave Jose Mourinho the option to simply substitute Valencia as he didn’t want to brandish a red card in a friendly. But when Mourinho refused, Valencia was given his marching orders.

The clash grew increasingly spicy in the second half, with Juan Mata injured by a heavy challenge from Saucedo, and Matteo Darmian also limping off with a knock late on.

Mourinho played down the extent of both injuries post-match.

“Mata has a big ankle, but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably. Darmian’s problem is not an important one.”

After utilising a back three in the win over LA Galaxy at the weekend, Mourinho opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, declaring pre-match that his players would be:

“…playing in different positions and thinking football in a different way and being organised in a different way. We are also going to play with four at the back.”

That gave new signing Victor Lindelof, already a popular pick with 17.2% FPL ownership, a chance to make his first start for the club, while Mkhitaryan and Lingard were employed just behind Lukaku up front.

Mourinho’s 11 changes at the break included Sergio Romero replacing Joel Pereira in goal, with David de Gea not involved.

United will face rivals City in the early hours of Friday morning.

Manchester United XI First half: J Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, McTominay; Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Lukaku.

Manchester United XI Second half: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Darmian; Herrera, Fellaini, A Pereira; Mata (Mitchell 59), Martial (Tuanzebe 90); Rashford.

SK Sturm Graz II 0 West Ham United 0

Youngsters and new signings blooded, 22 players used and no-one injured – West Ham’s first run-out of the summer ticked a number of pre-season boxes.

Unfortunately, the ‘goals scored’ box wasn’t one of them as Slaven Bilic’s men drew a blank in Austria.

Bilic handed Pablo Zabaleta his Hammers debut at right-back in a 4-5-1 formation that had Ashley Fletcher as a lone striker supported by Andre Ayew from the left and Robert Snodgrass wide on the right.

Mark Noble returned following his recent operation on a long- standing abdominal injury to captain the first-half line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock with a late free-kick. Manuel Lanzini then took over set-piece duties after the interval.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently the most popular West Ham pick among Fantasy Premier League managers, his 7.0 price and attacking potential tempting 7.1% into early investment, and he had chances both from dead-ball situations and open play as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell took over the captain’s armband from Noble for the second half, while Spanish striker Toni Martinez replaced Fletcher up front, with Bilic’s striker options severely limited by injuries to Andy Carroll (hip) and Diafra Sakho (back).

That lack of depth among the forwards is one area Bilic has been keen to address in the transfer market, while the reported loan signing of England goalkeeper Joe Hart will at least provide plenty of competition at the other end of the pitch.

Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Winston Reid (knee) also played no part as they continue their recovery work, while Jose Fonte has been given extra time off after helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Bilic also revealed that midfielder Cheikou Kouyate suffered a setback in training, injuring his knee “in a very strange and awkward way”.

The Hammers face Fulham next on Thursday.

West Ham United XI: Adrian (Randolph 46); Zabaleta (Byram 46), Collins (Rice 46), Burke (Ogbonna 46), Masuaku (Cresswell 46); Noble (Cullen 46), Obiang (Makasi 46), Holland (Fernandes 46); Snodgrass (Lanzini 46), Ayew (Feghouli (46); Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

The 6.5 forward price point is awful. And hes a proven goal scorer. Ive beard rumors about him heading to WestHam.

Phillips has good fixtures and im hoping he remains on set pieces.

Crystal Palace complete £7.9m signing of Jairo Riedewald from Ajax

Makes it difficult to pick their defence IMO. I expect Dann and Tomkins to be kicked out of the first team with very much a Dutch back line of PVA, Riedewald and Martins-Indi (when he signs). However, they won't have played together much come GW1 which makes them questionable IMO.

I don´t see Riedewald starting to be honest, he is quite slow. He might play LCB since de Boer likes to build up from the back but how he makes their team stronger I don´t really know.

I got an idea that I want your feedback on.

I'll keep 2m itb to upgrade either a baseline 4.5m defender, mid or an attacker.
Formation initially is a 5-3-2 / 4-4-2 depending on fixtures.
PPGW guesstimation; 60, based on last years averages in the suggested price ranges.
If I can keep a decent 50 PPG for the first 5 GW's, I'll consider it a success.
The team is setup for a GW6 WC, but only if needed.

    Structure is
    4.5/4
    x/x/4.5/4.5/4.5
    x/x/x/4.5/4.5
    x/x/4.5
    2m itb

This means that I can invest 62.5m in 7 of my players, which gives a good core of (suggestions):

    Trippier/Aké
    Sanchez/Coutinho/Zaha
    Kane/Lukaku

Any suggestions, comments or the like is welcomed.

I had him last year at some point towards the end, did me good. I believe he has the quality to do well against any team. He is perhaps is a little too expensive this year, but I don't like the other options at that price range. Ramsey could come good, but I would like to not double up, at the start of the season.

Defoe scored 10 goals + 5 penalties (none of which he won) last season in a team that was set up for him as the sole attacking output.

He played 1 through ball last season.
He created 20 chances last season.
              No assist potential

Will he definitely take penalties from King?

Just can't see him providing any value at 8.0. Would take Benteke any day of the week at that price.

    Hi guys,

If all those defenders are nailed, could someone tell me why we should not go for that kind of formation: 5-2-3 ?

    Foster

    Lindelof-Cedric-Trippier-Milner-Kolasinac

    Sané-Coutinho

    Lukaku-Kane-Defoe

    Myhill- RLC- T. Caroll - 4.5

Barely used more than 3 defenders formation in the past but I have the impression this could be the year for something audacious.

I wouldn't write him off, he was one of the best LB / LWB in the division last year and that was in a relegation side. Yes it's a big step up but he could end up being 1st choice.

Anyway the move hasn't happened yet, just if it does be wary.

I personally think people are getting a little carried away with the 5 man defence talk

In my experience relying on defenders can be extremely frustrating, it's such a gamble. There are always cheaper options who perform well and if you have put alot of money into a defence which isn't delivering this can be a nightmare

Midfielders and strikers have historically been where the points come from. To ignore this area of the team for instance by having 3 cheap mids below 7m is just not for me

It's possible to play a 5 man defence and still have 3 premium mids and two premium strikers

        My current draft:

        Foster
        Cedric Lindeloef Trippier Monreal Daniels
        Alli Mane
        Lukaku Jesus Lacazette

        Myhill RLC Cork McArthur

        Not that bad is it?

not bad, it looks decent but still it's too much reliance on the defence for me. On paper it seems sound but did you ever really think about having a 5 man defence last season?

This year, There isn't many value players 6.5m and below for mids and strikers.

I played 433 most of last season with Alonso Rose Brunt and then a variety of 4.5s. Felt weird at first but then got used to it. This season I can't see anyone lower than Sane providing value in mid that I'd want.

It is early of course and things change and you have to be adaptable, but I'm really coming around to the idea of it.

Clean sheets are fairly predictable for the big teams, why not try and capitalise on that?

Looks good on paper, but there are few reasons why to go with only 3 def. In your team, when your defenders get carded or injured, what kind of replacements you have on becnh? Three 4.5 mids? No points there, where a 4.5 defender who comes of your bench is always capable of CS points (see how many good 4.5 options you have this year). Also, with so many good pricey options in mid and attack, i want to have as many as i can have, because then i have much higher chance to pick the right one.

If they get injured etc- they get transferred out?

You want all the good pricey attackers? of course- my draft has 5 premium attackers. You really want people like Fabregas and Ramsey?
