Scout Report – Alvaro Morata

Chelsea finally ended their search for a new frontman by acquiring Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £58m, which could rise to £70m.

After months of speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United, the 24-year-old instead becomes the Blues’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrival of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Manager Antonio Conte was quick with the plaudits:

“I think for sure he is good signing for us. Morata is a young player who has a lot of experience. He has played with Real Madrid and Juventus and has a lot of experience for the league and also in the Champions League. Morata for sure is a first-choice [for team selection], a good striker and a player with the right prospects for Chelsea. He is very young, for sure he can improve a lot and I hope to show his value with us.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Morata was handed his senior debut by Jose Mourinho back in December 2010. That was to be his only league appearance of that season, as he dropped back to the reserves to continue his development.

The forward played a further 36 times over the following three La Liga campaigns, scoring 10 goals, but left to join Juventus in the summer of 2014 after failing to cement a regular role.

Ironically, he was signed for the club by long-term admirer Conte, who then promptly left to manage the Italian national side.

Morata went on to produce 15 goals and 12 assists over his two years in Turin, but once again struggled to cement a spot in the first XI, with 36 of his 63 league appearances off the bench.

Real triggered a buy-back clause in his contract last summer as the striker returned to Madrid in a deal worth 30m Euros. He finished the league season as their second-top scorer, netting 15 times and supplying three assists, but he started on just 14 occasions under Zinedine Zidane, with 12 further outings as a substitute.

On the international stage, Morata has turned out for Spain at every level from U17 upwards, producing 29 goals in 34 appearances. He has notched nine times in 20 outings for the senior side, with his last goal arriving against Colombia in early June.

The Prospects

Having informed Diego Costa that he was no longer part of his plans for 2017/18, Conte looked odds-on to acquire Romelu Lukaku for the Blues’ lone striker role last month.

But the Belgian’s decision to reunite with Mourinho left Chelsea desperate for extra firepower.

Standing six foot two, the physical Morata looks tailor-made as a lone striker for Conte’s tactical approach. Strong in possession and with an ability to hold up the ball and bring team-mates into play, he’s solid in the air – six of his 15 league goals came via headers in 2016/17.

Delving further into last season’s data, Morata fares well when compared with Costa. He was superior for minutes per shot (24.3 to 27.8) and, crucially, also boasted a far better conversion rate, netting 27.2% of his efforts to Costa’s 18%.

In his two seasons with Juventus, Morata was a little less prolific, netting 15.6% and 14.5% of his opportunities.

In spite of his limited pitch-time last term, the new arrival’s average of 88.9 minutes per league goal was far superior to Costa’s 154.5 and bettered only by Harry Kane (87.3) among FPL forwards.

He was also far more dominant in the air, winning 46.9% of headers compared to Costa’s 28.1%. In terms of creativity, Costa had the edge by an average of 73.5 minutes to the new boy’s 78.4.

Morata also affords the Blues a greater mobility up top for Conte’s second season at the helm. The Chelsea manager continues to remain unconvinced by Michy Batshuayi, who once again looks poised to remain a back-up option after being handed a single league start in 2016/17.

Likely to come in around 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League, Morata’s arrival adds yet another premium-priced striker to the mix as the competition for our three-man frontlines intensifies.

But given that Eden Hazard is priced at 10.5 and could also retain spot-kick duties, the Belgian may well remain our go-to option in the Blues’ attack once he’s recovered from an ankle injury around September.

That could be a key factor when comparing Morata with Kane, Lukaku, Lacazette and maybe Jesus – all four of those strikers are expected to be designated penalty-takers in 2017/18. It was a factor that tainted our view of Costa at times and this could also apply to his successor.

Initially, Hazard’s absence allows the likes of Willian and Pedro – at 7.0 and 8.0 respectively – to battle it out for our attentions as a relatively cheap route into Chelsea’s attack for the first few matches. It could also see Morata handed spot-kick duties which, we can hope, he might retain.

Certainly, there’s no doubt that Morata has the potential to make his mark in the Premier League.

Yet with so many alternatives for our Fantasy attacks, and with Hazard’s return another big factor, it remains to be seen whether many will be prepared to take the plunge as Conte’s troops prepare for a testing opening run involving clashes against Spurs, Everton and Arsenal in the first five Gameweeks.

Price Rise Considerations in First Draft
    ----------------------------------------------------
My understanding is that price rises are ultimately driven by net transfers in a given gameweek. Should any consideration be made to ownership when doing this initial draft? In theory a lesser owned player who performs well in the opening weeks has more potential to increase in price since there are more FPL managers who could transfer this player in. Conversely, is it safe to assume that player like Lukaku are unlikely to hit many price rises given his high ownership?

Yes to some extent. Something that symbolises this more than anything else is RLC. Highly owned and a lot might be expecting him to play gw1, so if that doesn't happen it might be an issue cos the market come gw1 is Uber volatile and could lead to your 4.5 asset threatening a drop. yeah, Eriksen would rise at a much higher/quicker rate than Alli I believe

players like Ozil, Mane, Mkhi could rise 0.3 pretty quickly should they do well (quite possible)

Interesting. Any players worth looking at for some early FPL brokering? I always aggressively chance a high team value in the first half of the season, but never really considered it in an initial draft.

      This is dangerous speculation!

In previous seasons, a 0.1m price rise has required X number of transfers, regardless of % of ownership. FPL vary X each gameweek according to how busy the transfer market is (hence the prediction sites not being 100% accurate).

Price drops ARE based on % of ownership. For example, a player may need 10% of managers to sell him to lose 0.1m. Again this value no doubt changes week to week.

There are further nuances but these are the basics in seasons past.

lol, if I did win it I'm sure they might find a way of getting in touch 😉

BTW there's actually a FAQ for this on FPL which might save the OCD amongst us some heartache.

'I've set up a new team, but can't see my history or renew my leagues from previous seasons. Can you link my old account to my new one?'

'Unfortunately, we cannot link your history from an old account to a new one. If you have set up a team for this season using a different email address, you will not be able to view your history from previous seasons on that account.

In order to see previous seasons' scores, you will need to sign in on the homepage using the registered email address and password combination from the previous seasons and set up a team using that account.'

I'd agree, pretty much good to go. I'd stick with Gayle over Austin for now as Austin's game time isn't guarenteed. Few others I'd recommend watching are Salah, Mane (as Coutinho will likely play deeper this year) and Ince, Ritchie, Knockaert and Stanislas as potential Phillips alternates if West Brom don't perform this year! Hope this helps 🙂

2015/16 - 38 app 25 goals - This guy is decent, he'll ease off though.
2016/17 - 30 app 29 goals - This bloke is the real deal.

It makes me feel uneasy without Kane in my side. 7 goals in his last 2 away games last season and starting up against a promoted team, i expect atleast 1 goal at worst. I pity anyone who refuses to put super Harry Kane in their teams.

Hands up if you own De Bruyne simply because he is the most expensive affordable midfielder, and you feel a vague need to cover City but you are really not even sure he is the right one. You have doubts about his position and rotation, yet you own him anyway.

Does this sum up the thohts of the average owner. If so give yourselves a slap and put the effort in to find a player not surrounded by doubts who will likely do just as well at a more reasonable price.

I have him too, and am slapping myself daily. It feels like I have him for the reasons I gave above. Feels wrong, for 9.5M here should ne more like Alli that you know will give good returns.
There is talk of De Bruyne dropping deeper, rotation issues etc it just feels for that sort of money that something more concrete is called for. I think it probably reflects the lack of options, and if there were a few more he would be in very few sides

De Bruyne is concrete if you stick with him. This talk about him dropping deeper and being rotated came up last season too. Didn't stop him from getting 21 assists and 199 points.

I had Sané before but it just didnt feel right.

I'm not entirely sure why there is quite so much love for KDB, although I am slightly tinged by having him over their early double and he did sod all.

There was also a lot last year about the fact he plays deeper so isn't worth it. He did have a good end to the season but that was when the team's they were playing had nothing to play for.

Not saying he won't do well, but I think the value is in one of their front 3 (whoever that may be)

His eventual total was reasonable, however he still would have been a difficult player to own. Not many people will put up with 1 point substitute appearances from their most expensive midfielder. It causes frustration, price drops and tests the patience

Just finding it really tough to find any stand out mids. There's seems to be a lot more rotation from all the top teams this season, and I'm not really sold on any of the "budget friendly" mids yet. Combined with the strength of the top teams, the goals and assists seem like it'll be spread out instead of being with a stand out player.

I think its a combination of the two. All the good forwards are over 10mil, all the good midfielders are over 9mil.
Prices are just too high this season, think they need to review it next season. The mids 6-8mil dont all suck, but most of them suffer rotation or blow hot or cold. Its basaically picking straws when you have mids below 9mil, baragains will appear as usual but its just pot luck at the moment.

From the bits of Liverpool's recent friendlies that I've seem, he seems to be getting a lot of shots and chances off. I think he'll be a decent option for that price. Seems to bounce off well with the other mids too.

I like all 3 as striker options. I don't like them 3 as a strikeforce.

I think it is a pretty good one. Folks are mixed on Firmino here, but for his price, he seems like a very good value. If I go 3-4-3, that will likely be my front line.

Undecided. I'm on Kane-Lukaku-Gayle at the moment.

Could well be, I just can't find the extra million for Firmino and the subsequent reshuffle getting him would mean, happy with Defoe instead though

I'm on B (I think Kane+Sane is the even money option)

    Which one would you pick?

    A) KDB, Lacazette
    B) Sane, Sanchez

Would pick B but worried about Sane...

Can't wait for all this planning and RMTs to all be scrapped for an early WC.

Assuming Chicharito comes in < 8m, then would you rather:

    1) Benteke + Lanzini
    2) Chicharito + Zaha
    ?
I'm trying get a Crystal Palace attacker and I'm torn on West Ham (might be best to bring them in after a couple of weeks)...

I'd go with 2) as well. I was unsure because Lanzini has been talked up a lot and, to be fair, his situation looks promising as well.
