Moving Target – Marko Arnautovic

Having strengthened at the back with the arrivals of Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta, West Ham United moved to increase their attacking options with the club-record signing of Stoke City midfielder Marko Arnautovic for an undisclosed fee, which could rise to £25 million.

The 28-year-old Austrian international has signed a five-year contract with the Hammers, and West Ham manager Slaven Bilic believes the versatile attacker can be a huge success at the London Stadium:

“It’s a big signing – he is a massive player who knows the league, which is very important. He is in his best age, he is very motivated and I know him very well. He is a top player and he can play all across the front line, so he is a great signing for the Club.”

The History

Arnautovic began his youth career in his native Austria before joining Dutch side FC Twente at the age of 17 in 2006.

He made his professional debut as a substitute against PSV Eindhoven in April 2007 and made further strides the following season, making 14 league appearances, predominantly off the bench, and recording two assists.

The 2008/09 campaign saw Arnautovic establish himself in the Eredivisie, recording 12 goals and six assists from 28 league outings.

Those impressive performances led to the midfielder joining Inter Milan on loan for the 2009/10 season. But he only managed to make three league appearances and, in the summer of 2010, signed for German outfit Werder Bremen.

Arnautovic spent three seasons in Germany and enjoyed a reasonably successful spell, tallying 16 goals and 13 assists in 84 appearances in all competitions.

He signed for Stoke in September 2013 and enjoyed a strong first season in which he produced four goals and 10 assists in 30 matches.

His best campaign came in 2015/16, when he managed 11 goals and six assists, though last season’s return of just six goals and seven assists was slightly disappointing.

Arnautovic represented Austria at U18, U19 and U21 levels before making his senior debut against the Faroe Islands in October 2008.

He has made 65 appearances for his country, registering 15 goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

West Ham scored just 47 goals last season – down from 65 in 2016/17 – so strengthening in attack was always going to be a key priority for Bilic this summer.

The departure of Dimitri Payet in January left the Hammers short of both goals and creativity from midfield, although Manuel Lanzini certainly stepped up to the plate, finishing the season with eight goals and three assists.

However, Robert Snodgrass has fallen flat since his arrival from Hull City, so the addition of Arnautovic, along with the imminent capture of striker Javier Hernandez, now seeks to improve the potency of the West Ham attack.

Arnautovic is likely to start on the left wing, in perhaps a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, although Bilic did use several different systems last season and could also start with three at the back.

When fit, Michail Antonio looks the favourite to start on the right, with Lanzini either deployed in the No 10 role, or as the most advanced player in a three-man midfield.

Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew provide other attacking alternatives, with Snodgrass, Sofiane Feghouli, Diafra Sakho and Ashley Fletcher set to play back-up roles.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Arnautovic is surprisingly tall for a wide player, but his combination of skill and strength make him very difficult to shackle.

He possesses great vision and the ability to pick a pass, while his shooting is a real threat from range, though can be erratic.

Last season, Arnautovic averaged a shot every 45.42 minutes, which was inferior to Antonio (31.69), Lanzini (39.36) and Andre Ayew (42.41), the other leading mid-price options from the Hammers’ midfield.

However, that statistic only tells part of the story; we need to delve deeper to understand Arnautovic as a goal threat.

Incredibly, he was presented with 15 big chances – or gilt edged opportunities – in 2016/17. That ranked fifth for midfielders overall and was only one less than both Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Bournemouth’s Josh King.

But while King converted 12 and Hazard eight of their opportunities, Arnautovic scored with just three of his big chances.

What’s even more significant is that, in 2015/16, Arnautovic ranked third for big chances among midfielders with 18 – just one less than Alexis Sanchez and Sadio Mane.

That season, he successfully converted nine – a major factor behind his best ever Fantasy returns.

To rank so highly for big chances in two successive seasons in a Stoke City side hardly renowned for attacking flair illustrates the potential on offer here.

Arnautovic’s average penalty area touches per match increased from 3.9 in 2015/16 to 4.8 last season. In contrast, Lanzini recorded 1.9 touches in the box per appearance.

This is turn led to Arnautovic firing 42 of his 60 (70%) shots from inside the penalty area. Again, this puts Lanzini in the shade – the Argentine produced just 21 of his 69 attempts from inside the box (30.4%).

That statistic even betters Antonio, with the nine-goal winger producing 53 of 77 shots from inside the area (68.8%).

Clearly, Arnautovic is a player who will get into prime goal scoring positions. He just needs to improve his conversion rate. Notably, this dropped from 15.7 in 2015/16, to just 10% last season.

In terms of creativity, Lanzini led the way among the quartet, registering a key pass every 47.65 minutes, although Arnautovic wasn’t too far behind on 54.50. Antonio (78.71) and Ayew (96.13) failed to challenge Lanzini for that metric, despite the former’s eight assists.

Arnautovic was involved in 47% of Stoke’s goals when on the pitch in 2015/16 and even 33% in a disappointing 2016/17. That would indicate that he’s unlikely to be put in the corner by the likes of Lanzini or Antonio.

However, there are notable caveats.

His discipline was a concern last season, with nine yellow cards and one red.

Arnautovic is also unlikely to gain spot-kick duties at the London Stadium, with skipper Mark Noble expected to keep that responsibility while he retains a starting role. The new signing will also have to battle Lanzini for dead-ball deliveries, perhaps restricting his returns to open play.

Priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same as both Lanzini and Ayew – and a mere 0.5 cheaper than Antonio, Arnautovic will need to progress if he is to emerge as the key Hammers asset. In Sky Sports, an 8.8 price tag makes him West Ham’s most expensive midfield option.

Fortunately, we will be more than content to sit back monitor the situation, with West Ham’s opening schedule deterring initial interest. The Hammers face four away trips (mun sot new wba) over the first five Gameweeks.

That testing start, along with the fact that Bilic will have to incorporate two new influential players into his system, make it unlikely that Fantasy managers will look to the Hammers attack.

However, from Gameweek seven through to 13, Bilic’s men offer their first promising period.

They host Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool and Leicester City over that spell, alongside trips to Burnley, Watford and Crystal Palace. At that point, it will be worthwhile revisiting West Ham.

Doubtless, Arnautovic will catch the eye and even tempt investment. Whether he can keep pace or surpass a rapidly improving Lanzini is another matter.

By Gameweek seven, we will have the motivation to check in. At that stage, the impact of Arnautovic’s arrival will be clearer, both in terms of his own potential and the effect on Lanzini’s output.

Pretty good array of players overall, but not sure about that many each. Partly because Totty have Chelsea week 2. I don't see big returns there for the bunch. And Southampton are a bit suspect, adding in the fact that they have two fairly equal teams to play in first two weeks.

I've gone through so many drafts, would like an article where someone states it's better to spread yourself across many teams because...less chance/risk of a low score on week.

That's known as "coverage" and proponents go on about it a lot in RMTs. As I say, I'm not a believer. By having a narrow focus I know I'm guaranteed to get knocked out of Last Man Standing early doors because some weeks I'll score really low. However, I'm in a local weekly money-league where there's nothing for being steady and coming second, so I'll cash in regularly enough to make a tidy profit. I also followed this strategy last year and came in the top 50K (2%)

I'm a fan of triples and doubles - it's a high-risk all-or-nothing approach, but can bring huge rewards. If you forget about coverage and just look at fixtures and value, 3 Saints makes a great deal of sense and those players will outscore others at the same price in the early part of the season.

Spurs are a different kettle - the players aren't cheap (Trippier aside) and the fixtures aren't the best, but they have massive form carried over from last season on their side, so overloading on Spurs, Chelsea or Manc players is not such a gamble.

          My current draft has a first team of Chelseax3, Unitedx3, Spursx2, Saintsx3!

3 Spurs definitely not - can't go wrong with Trippier + Kane + Alli

Not so sure about Soton. I currently have Austin (if he looks nailed) and Romeu for the bench. A defender + those two would be alright. Not overly keen on double defence though

      I have 3 of each.

I have Forster, cedric and Bertrand

      And

      Alli Trip and Kane.

Southamton will do great in opening 10 weeks and Totenham seem good value for money especially Alli and tripp and Kane is the man, so I say it all good.

Ramsey may work but plenty other options in that price range such as zaha, lanzini , I did not mention Willian since you have already shot it down. I would downgrade ddg to fabianski/Forster/foster and upgrade Francis to Daniels.

Do you think it will make things more interesting if we don't have datas such as:
    1. Ownership percentage
    2. Trf in and out

In that case you need to have a feel towards the game, to sense the pulse and move accordingly.

It wouldn't be fast. Trust me, living in Asia I have long experience. A quiet restaurant = lazy incompetent management and docile staff. A busy restaurant = well-organised and quick service.

Why not? Player ownership only useful for prices falls and rises. There are loads of cases of people buying players just because of an uptick in ownership, often due to seemingly nice fixtures. Form is a better criteria for me.

Less nailed than Coutinho? You sure about that? Klopp - rightfully - seems cautious with Phil's minutes with the possibility of him breaking down. No such concerns last season with Firmino.

    *Stupid theoretical idea alert*

What if your bench in FPL counted to your score, but only half of their actual score, rounded down?

Would be interesting, people would be cautious about having conceding defenders on the bench, and people would invest more all around their squad. Feel like the whole squad would be more important, and people would spread funds.

    How's this team looking
    Elliot, DDG
    Kompany, Cedric, Daniels,Trippler, BHA 4 m defender
Willian, Ritchie, Alli, Zaha, T Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Austin
    0.5 in the bank

Thinking to get Hart. But three away fixtures is the issue
No ARS or Liverpool cover too.

    1. goriuanx

He couldn't get into CM last season even when there was an injury crisis. I recall him starting once in midfield. Stoke away when Klopp changed formation, rested the Brazilians and started TAA + Woodburn.

Henderson, Can, Lallana, Wijnaldum, Coutinho ahead of him. Lucas was last season too. Maybe Grujic this season.

      1. goriuanx

And even in that game, he only played 45 minutes in CM. Playing LWB second half.

It wasn't that he couldn't get in CM but that he was the obvious LB choice. Best def mid choice

There are also those 2 CL quals to consider around GW1-2. I just don't feel secure enough that he'll be nailed on for long, so I took him out when Robbo arrived.

    De Gea (Elliot)

I think punting on Saints players to begin with is a decent idea, especially their defence. Would prefer Austin to Tadic though if nailed, as he should be on pens.

Might go Rooney > Austin and Tadic > Phillips, keep the 1.5itb till i know more closer to the season, dont like many of the 7-7.5mid options. Thanks for the input.

Saints' fixtures and prices are very kind. I'd definitely go double in their defence rather than bringing in a Baggy at the same price.

It's a very sensible bench, avoiding non-players. My only concerns are Bellerin starting, and rooney whom you've already thought through.

      9/10

Only want bellerin if ox is out and hes nailed on, otherwise than that hes 6.0m so i have options to swap him out for someone else.

Yeh, playing the Ox there mystifies me, but not half as much as news that both Chelsea and City are sniffing around him. At Chelsea he'd be back-up to Fabregas and I suppose Alonso; at City he'd be a lost Delph or back up to Sterling who's back up.

So Wenger might start him until the transfer window closes just to make him feel important to the Arsenal cause!

If it's an Arse you want Kolasinac might be better if he turns out to be first choice.

Not too fussed on having an arse defender persay, just worried about no attacking arse or liv cover. I like wingbacks who get high up the pitch. If ox is still there in a few weeks, bellerin > kolasinac is an easy switch.

Arsenal coverage okay, but Liverpool is a tough one with so much rotation; in contrast to Arsenal they have early CL fixtures to negotiate.

Anyone else tempted to start without Kane?

Definitely won't be captaining him over Lukaku first 2 GWs and quite fancy a punt on Benteke (HUD, liv, SWA) and maybe even Austin (SWA, WHU, hud).

I know you have to make a concession somewhere.

Evenif you go with three big guns up top you can only have 3 of Jesus/Aguero/Lacazette/Kane/Lukaku/Morata

Not everyone has the same capability as Kane for scoring points though. He is a bit special

Right, and the other factor is if you have Kane and he doesn't work out, it's 1FT to bring anyone else in. You need 2 transfers to get him in.

    Will Chelsea keep Costa ??

Unlikely. They wouldn't have been so desperate to find a replacement if were then going to keep him

Don't see Conte and Costa being the types to reconcile.

So, in my draft league I've ended up with a midfield of:

    Ericksen, Sterling, Klaasson, Lingard, Knockaert

How many of these guys do you think will be regular starters? Do I already have to go looking for nailed on free agents just to field a full team?

Disaster mate! Keep Eriksen. Sterling's lost in the new signings and strong mids, Klaasson has awful fixtures, Lingard's a benchie and Knockers is injured.

Its for the season, so not to worried about fixtures and hopefully Knockaert will recover quickly. My concern is whether Sterling and Lingard will get minutes and I really don't know anything about Klaasson. Made the mistake of getting a decent keeper and Alonso early and missed out on decent mids.

The problem with draft is that you're unlikely to have three starting strikers. Which means that you really need your mids to show up.

I should have three starting strikers, Lacazette, King and Rondon; just hoping King and Rondon don't get rotated.

But yeah, leaves me with no margin for error. I've got Moses who is missing first game back and Shaw.... who is crocked. I think i need some surgery already.

You definitely need surgery already lol.

What about Joe Hart as goalkeeper.... incredible value @ £4.5mil, save you a little cash.

Alonso... Very expensive depending on the rest of your team. Looking your midfield you need some more strength in the mid

Get rid of Sterling, Klaasson, Lingard and Knockaert!

Liverpools new midfield signing Salah looks like a great shout!!

Good, down to just the half-dozen redrafts over the weekend, although that might have been partly due to the 10 hours of power cuts.

Power cuts? You've them in Britain? I enjoyed a mock draft yesterday with some Ffscout people. It was good.

Real tough to predict who plays. Had Walker but 2 more wing backs has spooked me. Has Sane but currently on KdB.

Saw the discussion above re 3 Spurs and Southampton.
2 triples mean you will do very well or very poorly. I am not not all my eggs in one basket.
For sure triple up saints defence is a step too far for me despite the fixtures.
So May nice 5.0 and 5.5 defenders. I would swap one out.

Also no Lukaku is a worry.
I have just given into fear on Kane and Lukaku and have both.

Triple Saints defence - I love it even if no one else does. For me it's excellent with the key exceptions of lacking United, and Morata - without seeing him in action in a Chelsea shirt it's currently too much of a punt for me.

So trying to shave .5 or 1 mil.

Can Long, Ward-Prose or even Boufal nail down a place ?
Who do you think is most likely.
And any chance they could be worth the .5 or 1 mil saved on Austin or Tadic?

JWP or Boufal could but we need to see more pre-season. Currently I'd say Tadic and Austin are more secure.

I think if Long were going to nail a spot at Southampton h would have done it by now. He is very much plan B there plus Austin is the better goalscorer there. Hopefully he can prove that to the new coach

Boufal possibly we will need to see what they do preseason

Boufal has the best chance out of those 3.

Thanks guys Boufal did ok for goals in France so he is one I am looking at too. No great shakes last year but he could kick off.

That .5 allow me a 9.5 mid which I think will be essential. No flexibilty to get a Mane or Alli could really hurt.
