Scout Report – Mikel Merino

Newcastle United completed their fifth summer signing with the addition of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on a season-long loan.

The Spanish U21 international struggled for pitch-time after joining the German giants last summer, but Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes Merino can thrive under his guidance over the coming campaign:

“Mikel is a midfielder with talent, an under-21 international for Spain. He’s a good size, has quality on the ball and he’s very, very focused and professional. Hopefully, he’s the kind of player we can improve a lot – he certainly has the mentality to get better and better. He has to show what he has, and hopefully, he can enjoy playing here for a long time.”

The History

Merino began his youth career at Osasuna and made his debut for the reserve side during the 2013/14 season.

He broke into the first-team squad the following campaign, making 29 appearances and registering one goal and four assists in the Spanish second tier.

The midfielder enjoyed another strong season in 2015/16, producing seven goals and one assist in 38 league outings, as Osasuna gained promotion to La Liga via the play-offs.

Merino then signed a five-year deal with Dortmund, but featured in just eight league matches last term, making only two starts.

The 21-year-old has represented Spain at both U19 and U21 levels, scoring two goals in 19 matches, and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in this summer’s UEFA U21 Championship.

The Prospects

While both of Merino’s starts for Dortmund came at centre-back, the Spaniard is predominantly a midfield player, capable of operating either as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box-to-box midfielder.

In his first interview for his new club, Merino offered his own perspective of what he can offer.

“I am a midfielder with a lot of potential. I like to help my team-mates always with the ball or without the ball. I always want to attack to have the ball and score goals and to help the team to go forward. This is always my main mentality, but of course, we know that defence is a really important part of the game.”

At six foot two, Merino is strong in the air (he won over 60% of his aerial duels throughout his career at Osasuna and with the Spanish youth sides), while – as you’d expect from a Spanish midfielder – he’s very comfortable in possession, which does make him an option on the left of a three-man defence if Benitez operates with wing-backs.

Merino can spray both short and long passes with a high degree of accuracy from his trusted left foot, while he is also renowned for his work rate in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard is not blessed with a huge amount of pace, though, and he may take time to adjust to the physical nature of English football.

He did win 18 of his 19 attempted tackles last season, suggesting he’ll bring some combativeness to the Magpies’ midfield

His arrival will certainly boost the options available to Benitez.

The Newcastle manager generally favoured Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey as the central midfield pairing in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation last term, with Jack Colback the main alternative.

Shelvey was instrumental in Newcastle’s title-winning season and, having been named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, should remain relatively immune to his manager’s tinkering.

Merino is expected to ultimately claim a regular role at the expense of Hayden, with his ability to read the game offering protection in front of the back four.

Given that Merino may offer limited attacking threat in that role, he could come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League, with a chance he may be priced at 5.0.

In the Sky Sports game, he sets you back 7.3 to Shelvey’s 8.2, though Matt Ritchie looks better value at 8.3.

Newcastle have been handed a favourable start to the season, with five promising fixtures (hud WHM swa STO bha) following the testing opening home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The addition of Merino will certainly provide much-needed strength in depth in central midfield, with his quality on the ball and energy likely to mean that he gets plenty of minutes.

But given that he is still in the early stages of his development, and has missed much of Newcastle’s pre-season, it’s perhaps later in the season when he is more likely to assert himself at St James’ Park.

He will likely have little impact on our preferred Magpie midfielder – the aforementioned Ritchie – who could offer strong initial value via his set-piece and penalty duties. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Scot returned from injury to feature for 45 minutes in the midweek win over Bradford.

Getting some ManUtd defensive cover may prove useful (my pick is DeGea).
I'd turn Francis to Mee, to possibly play him in Gws 2 and 4.
Between KDB, Alli, Coutinho, my 2 choices would be KDB and.. Eriksen.

There was a lot of love for Dawson but it seems to have wore off.. Daniels is also a great option if I went him over Dawson and changed DDG to Foster.. Gives me an extra 1.0 to upgrade RLC to Fraser or Austin to Chic or somebody else..

We differ in Tuanzebe (Mee), Coutinho (KDB), Ramsey (Willian), Sane (Phillips), RLC (Milivojevic).
Mee-> Can be played in GWs 2 and 4, where Burnley play WestBrom and CPalace at home.
KDB-> The mastermind in MCity's midfield. Coutinho may be rotated, let alone unsettled with all this Barca move talk.
Willian-> Looks like covering for creative duties till Hazard returns. Ramsey doesn't convince me.
Phillips-> It's him or Chadli that will be responsible to create chances during WBA's kind opening fixtures.
Mili-> May take set pieces and looks like much more reliable compared to RLC, so far.

      1. SuperMario
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Hey JE, thanks for the feedback.. So basically by downgrading Sane to Phillips I can afford all these upgrades which look super and still manage to have a City mid who is the main creator.. Interesting..

Are you set n DDG in goal?
        Confident of Dawson over Daniels?
Agree on Out being unsettled and KDB much better to start..
Also agree on Willian > Ramsey..
Milli is a good point too and RLC may not start the season..

Happy with Austin in your team?

-Trying to have a ManUtd defender, I started with Lindelof. The uncertainty around him led me to Bailly. Then thought DeGea looks like the most nailed there, while at the same price as Lindelof. If you don't go for Valencia, it's kind of straightforward.
-I want a defender from WBA for those fixtures. Since I'll be playing DeGea, Foster is a no go. Dawson seems to be it. I had Daniels till less than an hour ago, when I had a look at BOU's fixtures. Only GW2 at home vs Watford seems nice, while Burnley have proven they can be a lot more solid at home.
-I'll keep monitoring Austin (has a friendly today too), if he keeps starting their preseason matches and plays even decently, he'll be my 3rd forward. SOU also have nice opening fixtures and since I don't trust their midfielders, I'd like to have their nailed forward.

to me, the best right now seems to be Kevin Long (Burnley).

also, in your 3rd striker poll, you left off one of the best options -- 6.0 - Steve Mounie (Huddersfield),
          who is likely to start.

Did you dictate the prices? I'd have spent 8.0m on the most recent midfielder, gone for a 4.5 3rd striker and given yourself a very strong 4-4-2 with a playing 5th mid in Carroll and the one who can come off the bench if necessary.

So Hazard has started training for nearly a week now.

People expect him to be back for gw4, post international break.

That is 7 weeks after he begun training. Surely he is back earlier, possibly targeting Spurs in gw2 which would be 4 weeks of training. Maybe he makes the bench that game and comes on for an appearance, whilst starting in gw3.

Are people really comfortable punting on Willian for 1-2 games? FTs are so valuable early on. Seems a huge a risk that people here are ignoring. Why not go for someone like Zaha instead?

This. I don't plan to have him for long at all. Tbh I'm really just hoping for some points against Burnley and using him as a placeholder for the first budget midfield bandwagon.

If you are committing to that idea you are basically taking a 4pt hit already. If you value a FT as 4pts, which I do.

Fair enough though, each to their own. Could easily get a double digit haul vs Burnley but I wouldn't expect much after that.

Zaha, nailed, home to hudd is just as appealing and has good fixtures after. I'd rather predict who that bandwagon will be, personally.

From my experience punts that you know are going to cost a transfer down the line rarely work out.

If you only have room for one which would you prefer: a Man City defender or a Man Utd defender?
As I write, Man City defenders are 35.4% owned and Man Utd defenders are 35.8% owned- so an almost even split.
With my other main defenders from Chelsea, Bournemouth and Southampton, I have gone with Man City based on perceived slightly better value-for money and expected improved all-round defence this year. You can't have all!

I'm fairly confident with this drafting. I'd love to find the cash to upgrade Sane to KDB but not sure who to drop. Could possibly do Roons to Javier.

    What do you guys think?

    Heaton, Elliot
    Rangel, Trippier, Simpson, Cameron, Rosenior
    Sane, Willian, Zaha, Salah, Mooy
    Lukaku, Kane, Rooney

Coutinho is 0% leaving Liverpool this summer.

Has no release clause, just signed a 5yr deal in January. Pictured laughing and having fun in Germany in preseason trip, trains with the team, will start vs. Hertha on Saturday.

Keita deal is dead in the water, no need to consider whether we "could" sell him. He may go next summer if he decides he wants, but this summer is not happening.

Yeah, i'd get rid of Willian for Zaha/Mata/Ramsey. Flash in the pan, he's been at that club and done not much for what, 3 years, and 1 preseason performance doesn't change that. Plus he's a FT waiting to happen when Hazard returns.

I'm sure we're constantly going to have the weeks where we miss out on some big scores. Begs the question as to whether "cover" will be required a cross the top 6-8 teams, or do you take the risk and double up?

        Kun / Jesus & KDB / Sane
        Lacazette & Ozil / Alexis (??)
        Lukaku / Rashford & Pogba
        Morata & Hazard / Willian
        Firmino / Sturridge & Mane / Salah / Couthino / Lallana

The defensive options are far clearer imo, they just depend on budget

I was delighted when the prices were released. Yes, there is a wider diversity of heavy-hitters; moreover there are a lot of viable options in the second tier. Best of all the premium defenders and mid-range midfielders and strikers overlap. For me, this suggested a great deal more diversity in formations and viable squads, and the death of the lazy template.

As the days roll on, sadly I'm seeing the rise of templates - I suppose it's human nature to go with the flow. I'm still stubbornly sticking with my manic 5-2-3 in the hope that I'll dazzle you all!
