The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Team is

        Foster elliot
        Kolasenac trippier daniels suttner long
        Kdb Salah willian fraser Carroll
        Kane lukaku Austin

Would love pogba but squeezing him in tough.....

Can downgrade Austin to jrod but still need another 0.5 to upgrade willian to pogba...

Pogba, guaranteed starter. Willian, not so. At least until Hazard returns.

Having the same dilemma, but went Pog + J Rod over Willian and Austin.

Willian is a short term fix, and at 7m is hard to replace when Hazard returns. Would like Austin for Southampton cover but feel that's worth sacrificing for a free-to-roam Pogba.

How is this for a defence. Chosen Dann as good early fixtures and roates well with Mee. But is he nailed as not seen in many teams? Also considering Dawson Ake/Daniels but Bournemouth have some tough fixtures.

    DDG Elliot
    Trippier Walker Bertrand Dann Mee

Just not much upside for 5.0, expect that's why you've not seen him in many teams.

He should still be nailed even though they've got a new manager and new defender in rideweld. They've been playing with 3 centre backs in pre season which could help for clean sheets. I think he's a good pick to rotate as he has a goal in him. Decent alternative to a West Brom/bournemouth defender.

I'm seeing so much strange stuff when it comes to Abraham.

Swansea plays either a 4-3-3 or a 4-1-2-1-2 with largely the same players.

The big difference in the formations is where Sigurdsson and Ayew are playing. In the first formation they are wingers. In the latter formation Sigurdsson is an offensive midfielder and Ayew is a striker.

The reason Ayew is more nailed on than Abraham is due to an asymmetry in player responsibilities. Whereas the midfielders and fullbacks on the left are great at providing width(Carroll, Olsson), those on the right are not(Fer/Ki, Naughton). Therefore the right side striker will have a lot of space on the wing to do whatever he wants. Often times he will also be forced to play wide rather than being in the centre.

My impression of Abraham is that he has a lot of the same assets as Llorente. He's strong, a good target man, a decent finisher and has a high work rate. Those are the attributes Swansea need from their 9 regardless of formation. Abraham is therefore nailed on whenever Llorente is out injured.

The more I watch of Abraham, the more I'm convinced that he's faster, better at dribbling, and worse at heading than I first anticipated. Therefore he might be in contention for Ayew's secondary striker/winger role. I still doubt this will happen, and that Ayew is nailed on regardless of formations.

Tl;dr Abraham is nailed on as a striker while Llorente is out and will not play when Llorente is fit. Ayew should be nailed on regardless of formation and Llorente's fitness.

I really think Lanzini has hit his limit in terms of output. He's a fantastic player but think he's a little too lightweight and goes missing far too often. Unpopular opinion but he's had good spells in the team, having said that though I would like to see what he can do with better players around him.

8/10, not sure about having both Aguero and Jesus myself at the expense of Kane/Alli - but I understand your reasons for doing so. Then again, if Aguero and Jesus both start well (a la Sturridge/Suarez) you'll be off to a flyer, as very few will have both.

I know people are wary of Abraham and the mention of him invokes many a joke... But nobody was laughing about Gray this time last year and he was in nearly everybody's draft and went on to make it into a lot of people's teams for GW1 and beyond, scoring a similar amount in the Championship prior to his PL debut, add to that a better team who went up. So technically we should expect more from Abraham, scoring 26 goals in a dog awful Bristol team?

Well I can't see how he isn't. Llorente doesn't look ready to play with a broken arm. And I can't see Ayew or McBurnie squeezing him out. 26 goals in the Championship isn't to be sniffed at either. Chelsea will want him to play too.

    2. GuyIncognito

Is he going to start, that's my question. Surely he'll be eased in? I'd have him over Gayle if I knew he was starting.

He will definitely start. Swans are playing with a diamond midfield with Ayew and Tammy as strikers. When Llorente comes back, he'll partner Tammy, not replace.

Maybe not laughing, but there were still concerns he wouldn't score enough for BUR. Now I bought into the hype and drafted Gray in for GW1 and a few subsequent weeks. Not sure I would consider another budget forward as my #3 this season.

Gray was a failure really. Outside GW2 vs Liverpool where he got a goal and an assist. He played the 1st 5 games before being banned for tweets.

He wasn't but he didn't really live up the expectations though. I believe 9 goals on the season, 3 in the first half. Flop based on the hype. Just have to wait and see how Abraham performs. With the potential move of Sigurdsson, it's going to really hurt the offensive potential of Swansea. Not sure I would consider any offensive assets.
