The Technical Area – Liverpool’s Attacking Trio

Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

CPL having an open training session today. Should give us some evidence of whether injury is really bad...

How would a training session tell us how bad a players injury is?

Well, the two lines we have are:

        - It's precautionary, don't worry
        and
        - He's out for 4 weeks

We can rule one of those out, at least.

Aren't both lines from the same source but at different times. Croydon paper said it was precautionary on Sunday but today say otherwise.

Pending Zaha news before the drop:

    A) Zaha-Mkhi + JWP-RLC to fund (-4 and rotate TC/RLC 4th Mid)

Really disagree with the first sentence.

      Agree.

I like teams who have a concentrated source of points.

      Liverpool - Salah, Firmino, Mane
Spurs - Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Son (When fit)

Then you have Man City... Aguero, Jesus, KDB, Silva, Sane, B Silva, Gundogan, Fernanidnho

I think maybe he means they are so evenly matched that no one player from the trio stands out as most likely? If they only score one goal who is it most likely to be? There would be no consensus as all are 33% likely to get the goal.

Can anyone advise what to do with zaha likely injured and gabbi to drop this week?

    Thinking

A...zaha to mooy and keep gabbi

B....zaha and gabbi to mooy and formini for a hit

C....zaha and gabbi to mhki and mounie for a hit

    Foster elliot
    Danilo daniels Stephens Suttner long

    Kane lukaku gabbi

    Foster Elliot
    Alonso Bertrand Daniels Stuttner Long
    KDB Fraser Zaha* Ritchie TCarrol
    Lukaku Kane Firmino

Was planning on saving but I think the Zaha news force my hand. Will wait until Friday for any move.

    A) Zaha + Alonso --> Mkhi + Kompany/Alderwield
    B) Zaha + Alonso --> Eriksen + 4.5 defender
    C) Zaha --> Willian/Ramsey
    D) Other

      C. Willian will feature a lot until Hazard is back and assist is a huge part of his game. Going with Eriksen will be risky since they face Chelsea in the next game and you already have Kane.

Early days but is it a case of being a bit too trigger happy with Huddersfield? They only scored 20-odd goals in the Championship last season together with the Palace result being a false dawn. DeBoer's tactics played right into Huddersfield's hands.

Takes corners and is actually great at passing when not getting Red cards, so might get the odd open play assist if Arsenal are camped outside the opposition area. Cheap and cheerful until a star bargain option pops their head up.

I am looking att Mooy and Atsu stats.

It looks like (judging just from the first match) that Atsu will score more (more pentalty area touches and shots), but Mooy will assist more (being on corners).

    Who would you chose?

I watched the newcastle match and atsu looked threatening, which is impressive considering he was against a spurs defence and they were down to 10 men.
Didn't see how Mooy played, though

Yeah I saw the spurs game too and thought he looked lively. The red card damped that a little though understandably.

How important is Shelvey for the team? Will he be missed? Will it affect Atsus chances of scoring much?

Shelvey was a consistent creative threat in the championship but he struggles to replicate it in the prem. Absolutely no surprise to see him sent off last week. Walking liability. Footballers who can't keep their cool are no better than toddlers apart from the fact toddlers have an excuse. Merino will probably keep him out if the team now an has been training with Dortmund for a few seasons now. Should settle into the prem well and help defensively and give some much needed security in central midfield, allowing Atsu to get up the pitch more.

So much this. Merino, from the little I've seen of him, seems an excellent signing. Has Shelveys passing range combined with a good work rate and ability to win the ball back.

One thing I was sceptical of was his ability to consistently perform and have an effect on games. He didn't do it often enough for my liking last season. I think the permanent deal is the best thing to happen to him, he's looked outstanding ever since, and caused Spurs issues on Sunday. You'd like to think he can carry that over to 'lesser' sides.

I'll keep Lukaku as United seems like they will be unplayable this year and most goals will fall to Lukaku to score.

    Bottomed on last post lol

Have 2 non starters in my team (Zaha + Iwobi), can't take another drop so I'll have to take a hit (0.5 ITB). Need some advice:

    A. Zaha + Iwobi > RLC + Mkhi (-4)
    B. Zaha + Iwobi + Alonso > Eriksen + RLC + Jones
    C. Just replace Zaha and take no hit

think iwobi is unlikely to drop again this week - only 5 players have dropped by 0.1 as everyone tries to jump on bandwagons

      I've got 1 red card, 2 injuries & iwobi
I'm keeping iwobi for now, far more important things to deal with & not playing WC at this stage
      8 point hit more likely

And unless Zaha starts and scores he will be binned by en masse

    Begovic
    Danilo* Yoshida Dawson
    Alli Salah Zaha* Ritchie
    Aguero Lukaku Gabbiadini
    (Hart Carroll Manquilo Long)

Already used my FT for Iwobi to Ritchie. Have 1.0 in bank.

Am I crazy to have both Kane and Kaku and wanting to captain Kane due to Kaku's poor away record and Kane's good derby record?
Counter arguement is Kaku eeasy fixture (Swansea consided a lot of shots) and Kane Wembley/August factor

I don't get why Lukaku is such a popular captain against Swansea. Lukaku has mostly been performing at home. Swansea has only conceded 26 goals in the last 20 PL games. Swansea has had a pretty good grip on Manchester United. Lukaku has only scored 3 times against Swansea. Are people extremely convinced about Lukaku as captain this week due to fear or form?

It's because they watched the games last weekend. Manchester United played very well, I didn't watch Swansea but the stats say they were pretty bad and they will face a much better team this weekend. It sounds like Manchester is gonna score at least two goals and Lukaku is likely to be involved.

I don't think you can judge any defence on their performance away to Southampton ... a clean sheet is the most probable result regardless

Lukaku's home was godison park and not old Trafford so there is not much in that theory.with mourihno's team and playing style there is chance that forward player scores more.

Swansea had a good grip on mun ? They always do concede though. It's about with siggy or without siggy and I can see utd keeping clean sheet also.

Don't captain him then bud. If you truly believe that this is the same UTD side as the last few years, then go ahead. Where as I see an absolute behemoth of a team, with a monster striker at the front, supported by 2 magicians up against a side that will surely be relegated this season.
