The Technical Area – Liverpool’s Attacking Trio

Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

I have the standard how do I afford Mkhi request here...

    Forster Elliott
    Kola Bertie Daniels (Suttner, Long)
    KDB Zaha* Fraser Ritchie (Carroll)
    Kaku Kane Firmino

    Initial thoughts
    A. Zaha and Fraser to Mkhi and Atsu (means double Newcastle however)
    B. Zaha and Fraser to Mkhi and RLC
    C. Zaha and Ritchie to Mkhi and Atsu/Mooy
    D. The big change option. KDB and Zaha to Salah and Mkhi
    E. Other option - e.g Gain cash from defence

Same forward line and midfield. Thinking Zaha --> William.. prefer not to take a hit this early.. Mkhi could easily be rotated as Manchester have a lot of options.

"The Free Hit chip can be used once a season, is played when confirming your transfers and can't be cancelled after confirmed." from the Game FAQs. This implies that it's not like the unlimited-transfer wildcard where you can constantly save and update through a game week, but rather a one off transfer session to create a new team. This new team would not negate any transfers you made during your fugue state on Sunday night.

Shocked at the amount of people who spend hours reading and commenting on this game, but do not understand the basic principles of probabilities and statistics which are the basis of playing it well.

Predicting football games is best modeled statistically: Whether a given player (say Aguero/Kane/Jesus/Lukaku) scores in any given match can be given a certain probability based on various parameters. If you before GW1 thought that Jesus, Kane, Lukaku,Aguero where roughly equally likely to score, then you should still think they are roughly equally likely to score: The amount of data gained from 1 match isn't nearly enough to get significant information which changes the probabilities (of course exceptions are suspension, injuries, penalties etc).

So if you now transfer (say) Kane to Lukaku you certainly are playing badly: Most likely you waste a FT transferring out Kane who you believe is better value than Lukaku (after all, you started with Kane instead of Lukaku). If you actually do think that after GW1 Lukaku clearly is a better choice then you made a huge blunder before GW1: since it is impossible that you got enough data to conclude this based on GW1 you should have concluded it before GW1, hence you wasted your FT and many points GW1.

So if you spent some time thinking about your GW1 team, then you certainly shouldn't sell Kane/Jeses/KDB etc. based on one match. Consider also the following: Before buying a player one should in advance have a rough idea of the criteria when one transfers him out again, for instance one could ask oneself:

If I buy Vardy/Salah/Mkhitaryan/etc and he blanks the first game will I transfer him straight out again?

If the answer is yes, then clearly you shouldn't buy the player (since every player blanks in 30 % or more games). If the answer is no, then obvously one shouldn't transfer KDB/Kane/Jesus/etc out either after only one game, by the same argument.

Now of course these considerations ignores price rises/decreases, however given that the above argument seems reasonable, there is no reason to expect that people would sell Kane/Jesus/KDB after 1 blank, hence one should assume that they will not decrease. However due to people selling for bad reasons it might actually happen that one or more of these will drop, which is completely crazy. Hence the seller are essentially kingmaking the players who were lucky enough to choose the strikers/mids who happened to score GW1.

I agree one could consider selling for price increases. Lukaku will certainly increase now. However 0.1 increase for 1 FT seems not worth it: Every single week you could do a transfer which 100% gives you 0.1 increase. If a transfer gives 0.2 increase it might well be good enough (I am not sure, I do not feel I understand the value of the different currencies points, TV, FTs relative to each other well enough).

However one of my main issues is the fact that one actually has to worry about Kane/Jesus/KDB dropping after 1 week. That is shocking.

+1m hulk, etc. Literally all the main characters who blanked last GW can score in GW2 and vice versa and it would not look at all statistically anomalous. The problem is that too many people don't realise this and cause price drops for those who are patient.

Great point. I completely agree. However at what point do you have to worry about not having a player (Lukaku) because of his high ownership?

      1. Make Arrows Green Again
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

If you think that player is over-priced or otherwise looks a bad pick then you are better off completely ignore the average ownership if you think you know better than most other people. I happen to own Lukaku because I think he is good value and he has good fixtures. I don't own Kane. If Kane had 50+% ownership I still wouldn't have him because I think Lukaku is the better value captain pick right now.

      Great post.

    7. Captain Roberto

None of that considers the fact that Lukaku is £1m cheaper facilitating midfield upgrades or that people may not have originally chosen Lukaku because they were unsure of the whole United side behind him. Now they have the data from one match that they most likely watched / or saw MOTD. They may also be covering their mini-leagues in a game week that is potentially a "6-pointer" should Kane blank again.

Its quite condescending to say people who switch Kane to Lukaku are no good at this game and are playing it badly. After all there is lots of anecdotal evidence that moving for form players is a good idea, and technically Lukaku is the (very short term) form player. There is also the evidence that Swansea are worse than Chelsea, and thus Lukaku is more likely to score against them than Kane is to score against Chelsea.

As for the price changes; Kane is v.unlikely to go down because his owner ship is too high. It would take Net 150,000+ in one day to see a fall of 0.1m. And even then, because he is 1m more valububle you can still buy Lukaku in GW3 if you wanted to.

This is what I'm thinking. Loftus-Cheek and Carroll offer decent 4th mid rotation: (SWA,NEW,SOT,WAT,whu,HUD,new,WHU). Can then upgrade Fabregas to Eriksen.

as long as it isnt "play danilo mid week, rest him weekend" pep rotation policy

What would you do if you already had a non-playing 4.0 and Zaha:

    A. Zaha + Dann --> Mkhi + Hunemeier (-4)
    B. Zaha + Daniels --> Mkhi + Hunemeier (-4)
    C. Zaha --> Ramsey/Tadic/Other

Also! Is jones @ 5.0 expected to play center back for the next 2/3 GW before main wildcard time?

    Is this worth the -4

    Zaha & fraiser > mooy + jones?

Well, well, I just acquired Martial. 1.5% ownership was too sweet to ignore. May be a good or bad move but I'll ride it through, in form, pushing for starts, United playing well etc

But others speculate that Mkhitaryan as well may have rotation concerns, can't win

          He does.

Nowhere near the extent of martial though

Cheers, other option was Ramsey who also has starting lineup doubts. Would have had Iwobi there anyway, can't see how Martial won't get at least 30 minutes in GW2, which may just be enough

Why is everyone getting rid of gabbi already?

West ham next and favourable fixtures....

If he scores. Would easily go on a run...

      Because west ham > Southampton.

If Southampton couldn't score agaisnt Swansea why would anything change?

I quite liked Atsu vs Spurs, and as a Serbian I've watched Tadic's every game for us, and he was great in all but the last one (he either assisted or scores 22 out of 25 goals of the national team)

Am I missing something with all the Mooy talk on here?

4 goals and 7 assists (in 45 games) last season in the championship

Seems like Ince may be worth the extra 0.5 (14 goals, 6 assists last season)

Following advice from earlier, does the following sound okay? Have half a mil spare.

Zaha and FoRster out to Mkhi and Foster (-4).

My other makeweight options include downgrading Ritchie or Fraser by 0.5m. Have Bertrand for Saints def points.

    Yay or nay?

Eriksen (CHE h) Salah (CPA h) Willian (SPU a) Fraser (WAT h)
Aguero (EVE h) Lukaku (SWA a) Mounie (NEW h)

I have Zaha on my bench currently, do I take a -4 to prevent a -0.1 fall or just wait till GW2 to transfer him out for free?
