Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

A red card for Kyle Walker stifles Manchester City who once again struggle for goals at the Etihad Stadium, as Wayne Rooney hits back-to-back strikes to reach another Premier League milestone. Here’s the notes from Monday’s contest.

City assets suffer from Walker’s dismissal

While City reacted positively to Walker’s first half dismissal – dominating the second period – the wing-back’s absence had a marked influence on their key assets.

The prospects or Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus were severely dented. The latter gave way for Raheem Sterling at half-time, consigning him to a second successive blank.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne retreated to become a deep-lying playmaker, dictating matters for City and rarely – if at all – threatening to raid the penalty area.

Punishing the pair for their failings is perhaps harsh with a trip to Bournemouth to come. However, in a volatile Fantasy Premier League market, it would seem inevitable. Both suffered losses heading into tonight’s contest following Gameweek 1 disappointment – those sales will now continue and likely accelerate.

As for Sergio Aguero, he also blanked and, after scoring just five of his 20 goals in 2016/17 at home, this may raise the concern on his suitability as a captain option. Two shots, missing the target with both, is not the expected level for an 11.5 forward but, again, Walker’s dismissal can be blamed.

Owned by 543,000+, some 39% of those owners handed him the armband for Monday’s game; their confidence in City’s ability to deliver goals at the Etihad will have suffered another blow.

Surprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s side scored just 37 goals at home last season – 18 fewer than Chelsea, 10 less than Spurs and only two more than Bournemouth.

Sane adds to City wing-back puzzle

Walker’s red card will see him miss the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth, but when he and Benjamin Mendy are available to Pep Guardiola, the City options at wing-back look bewildering.

The decision to deploy Leroy Sane on the left, dropping Danilo to the bench, confused matters further.

Clearly there is a chance that Sane will get his opportunities in home matches. That could see Mendy suffer rotation in the current formation, with Walker perhaps vulnerable on occasion with Danilo available to switch to the right.

In a nutshell, should we consider investment in the improving City defence, we seem to be restricted to the centre-backs with John Stones arguably the most favourable option.

Rooney revels in Manchester return

Of the four top ten Gameweek 2 captain picks on show tonight, Rooney was surely the most unlikely to deliver. But, perhaps typically on his return to Manchester, it was the former United man who gatecrashed the points to claim his 200th Premier League goal.

Owned by 743,000+ (16.9%), Rooney has delivered successive goals to raise his Fantasy stock as a third striker option.

However, he was deployed in a deeper role in Everton’s 3-4-2-1 – joining Tom Davies in support Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the lone striker. With Gylfi Sigurdsson arriving to snatch set-pieces, investment in Rooney clearly comes packaged with a caveat.

Calvert-Lewin is intriguing. He boosted his prospects with a hugely encouraging display and, while Everton will perhaps be expected to enter the market for a striker, the 20-year-old could certainly be a prospect as a 5.0 FPL enabler. He has returned back-to-back assists and should be monitored if it appears that Ronald Koeman continues to put faith in the starlet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Has anyone seen any decent films recently? I had a look at what was on at the weekend and there was very little that made much appeal.

The Trip looks okay but the reviews suggest it's become a little tired.

Maybe i'm getting old, but there don't seem to be as many good films over the last few years (although I have read that there are fewer mid budget films getting made).

        Recent stuff:
        Birdman
        Ex Machina
        Nightcrawler
        Arrival
        Hell or High Water

If you want something a bit different, try Victoria. Its a German film; a 2 hour long single take (genuinely, no cuts) about a young woman getting caught up in a bank heist.

To be fair, it's pretty bloody accurate. Whether it's 95% or 102% if you're teetering on the edge - just do it anyway.

Increases seem to be slower than last year but FPLStatistics is doing a fantastic job - given there's little data to go off.

Fantasy football Fix are working on it.

20 Aug: Re lack of price rises. We are either looking at a large increase in the threshold required or manual intervention by FPL. The larger threshold value has currently been applied. Another gameweek will be needed to accurately estimate all the price change parameters

Is it time to switch to 3-5-2?

We all thought the premium forwards or wing backs would rule but it seems that there is more value in midfield so far.

Forwards - only Lukaku as a premium forward has performed so far. Kane has yet to spark (but may do next GW). Lacazette looks a prospect but with Giroud and Sanchez around I have my doubts. Augero and Jesus also seem to be cancelling each other out. For a premium forward I think you need a lone striker without threat of rotation or others stealing his points.

Mids - Pogba, Mkhi, Eriksen, Mané and a cheaper Richarlson, Mooy, Carroll/ RLC looks a formidable midfield 5. There is also some others bubbling up such as Silva, Ramsey, Salah maybe even Martial or Marhez. Add to that the impending returns of Couthino, Hazard, Sanchez! We seem spoilt for choice so why not fill up?

Defence - There seem to be some bargains to facilitate our big 5 such as Jones and the WBA lot. Trippier and maybe Robertson if you want a cheap attacking FB?

Last season was the time of 3-5-2 so could it be the same again this year?

      1. Jafalad
        • 14 Years

RLC hasn't done anything yet though has he? I know TC hasn't done anything either because I own the wretched blighter so I'm not sure why you want to play 5 milfs.

A forward line of Kane, Kaku and Gabbiadini looks ideal right now.

      BALL IN PLAY

So we all have a good idea which teams produce the low-priced defensive assets don't we, and typically it's about how defensive that team and in some cases how attacking their defenders are (Albion)

But those 'ball in play' stats from the BBC give a good indication as to one of the contributary factors to the great value of Burnley/Albion defensive assets and the relative poor value of their attackers. It's easier to run up defensive points and harder to run up attacking points when your tactics are to reduce the minutes of ball in play as much as possible. And this is a stat I don't think that i've ever seen anyone use when trying to assess the potential mid/long-term value of defensive assets. And attacking assets for that matter. And it's key isn't it, because it's no use claiming your striker plays 90 minutes every week if the team he plays for plays 15 minutes fewer football than everyone else. And likewise, you absolutely want your defenders having the defend 15 minutes fewer.

You seem to have focused on that and ignored the wider point. I just selected these teams because they have featured in games with the fewest minutes of football. More stats are available on the BBC

not only do they suspend attacking intent but it appears they attempt to run down the clock by removing the ball from play and keeping it there for as long as possible

I suspect this is a tactic they also use right from the start when facing a team Pulis believes the %'s say they shouldn't beat. We kind of know this, but when actually presented with the stats in minutes it makes quite stark reading

Will Daniels drop this week? Sitting at 68.5? If I take him out it will be for a -4 but won't be playing him for weeks so don't want him in my team

He probably won't drop tonight. Depending on how many owners ditch him, he could drop tomorrow.

I'm going to leave my front 7 this week I think.

Should I upgrade Ake or save the transfer?

      A) Jones
      B) Trippier
      C) Someone else
      D) Save

      Hart
      Bertrand / Cedric / Ake
      KDB / Salah / Richie / Mooy
      Kane / Lukaku / Gabbiadini

      Elliot / Carroll / Mee / Long

Both good options. Jones better value so he probably edge it.

I'm making funds to bring Kane in. Which looks better?

      A) KDB -> Silva
      B) Bailly -> Trippier & KDB -> Pogba (-4)

If you have Kane, I'd go for Pogba/Mki, and use you funds to upgrade someone else.

Gone Daniels > Jones... But got another free transfer,

      Foster | Elliot
      Kolasinac | Danilo | Cedric | Stephens | Jones
      KDB | Willian | Carroll | RLC | Chalobah
      Kane | Lukaku | Jesus

Even though Danilo will play this week do I go him > Tripper against Burnley?
      Save the trade,
      Or something else?

Do you guys Believe that Mooy is worth the extra 1.0 over RLC? What option is better... Alonso and RLC or Mooy and Trippier?

Right, wasn't planning it this early, but would you agree that this looks like a WC situation?

0 FT (did KdB to Pogba pre-price rise) £4m ITB

      Foster - Elliot
      Daniels - Bertrand - Dawson - Mee - Hunemeier
Pogba - Willian - Atsu - Carroll - Oriol Romeu
      Kane - Lukaku - Jesus

Jesus needs to go and midfield needs strengthening.

      A) WC
      B) Strengthen Midfield for -4 (keep Jesus)
      C) Larger overhaul of Strikers and Midfield for -8
