Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

A red card for Kyle Walker stifles Manchester City who once again struggle for goals at the Etihad Stadium, as Wayne Rooney hits back-to-back strikes to reach another Premier League milestone. Here’s the notes from Monday’s contest.

City assets suffer from Walker’s dismissal

While City reacted positively to Walker’s first half dismissal – dominating the second period – the wing-back’s absence had a marked influence on their key assets.

The prospects or Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus were severely dented. The latter gave way for Raheem Sterling at half-time, consigning him to a second successive blank.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne retreated to become a deep-lying playmaker, dictating matters for City and rarely – if at all – threatening to raid the penalty area.

Punishing the pair for their failings is perhaps harsh with a trip to Bournemouth to come. However, in a volatile Fantasy Premier League market, it would seem inevitable. Both suffered losses heading into tonight’s contest following Gameweek 1 disappointment – those sales will now continue and likely accelerate.

As for Sergio Aguero, he also blanked and, after scoring just five of his 20 goals in 2016/17 at home, this may raise the concern on his suitability as a captain option. Two shots, missing the target with both, is not the expected level for an 11.5 forward but, again, Walker’s dismissal can be blamed.

Owned by 543,000+, some 39% of those owners handed him the armband for Monday’s game; their confidence in City’s ability to deliver goals at the Etihad will have suffered another blow.

Surprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s side scored just 37 goals at home last season – 18 fewer than Chelsea, 10 less than Spurs and only two more than Bournemouth.

Sane adds to City wing-back puzzle

Walker’s red card will see him miss the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth, but when he and Benjamin Mendy are available to Pep Guardiola, the City options at wing-back look bewildering.

The decision to deploy Leroy Sane on the left, dropping Danilo to the bench, confused matters further.

Clearly there is a chance that Sane will get his opportunities in home matches. That could see Mendy suffer rotation in the current formation, with Walker perhaps vulnerable on occasion with Danilo available to switch to the right.

In a nutshell, should we consider investment in the improving City defence, we seem to be restricted to the centre-backs with John Stones arguably the most favourable option.

Rooney revels in Manchester return

Of the four top ten Gameweek 2 captain picks on show tonight, Rooney was surely the most unlikely to deliver. But, perhaps typically on his return to Manchester, it was the former United man who gatecrashed the points to claim his 200th Premier League goal.

Owned by 743,000+ (16.9%), Rooney has delivered successive goals to raise his Fantasy stock as a third striker option.

However, he was deployed in a deeper role in Everton’s 3-4-2-1 – joining Tom Davies in support Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the lone striker. With Gylfi Sigurdsson arriving to snatch set-pieces, investment in Rooney clearly comes packaged with a caveat.

Calvert-Lewin is intriguing. He boosted his prospects with a hugely encouraging display and, while Everton will perhaps be expected to enter the market for a striker, the 20-year-old could certainly be a prospect as a 5.0 FPL enabler. He has returned back-to-back assists and should be monitored if it appears that Ronald Koeman continues to put faith in the starlet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Only a viewpoint but I need to mention it to those learned in the FPL game.
    The subject of price changes.
Having looked at the sites that nobly assist us such as FPL Statistics who do their best in ascertaining the algorithms early on. It seems a fruitless task.
I believe it is of massive importance to ascertain the correct information as early as possible because of the impact it has on the game.
Argue against me but I enjoy games where skill levels come to prominence; even games such as poker, where skills over a period of time have significance.
So why the hell do the game organizers, who make profit through the website, have the right to determine unwritten rules that can impact the game itself? Somebody makes the rules and they have a distinct advantage over the rest by their knowledge. Who can say the more prominent people in the game don't take advantage? How do we know those who have the information fail to recuse themselves from the game?
Why is there a problem being totally transparent at the beginning of the season in the same way the rest of the game is designed? no matter what the baselines are, publish them and make the game fairer. Why should the people who make the right team decisions not be rewarded by price rises?
Feel free to argue on the counter and I am sorry if it feels like a rant. There are other issues too such as the the TV broadcast mark is involved in like how many people captained Lukaku on one week, or who triple captained who etc etc.

I cautiously agree that the price change mechanic needs to be completely predictable, such that anyone could work it out (lose/gain more than, say 20% ownership from the last price change, or go up by 0.1 every time that player appears in the weekly dream team, no drops).

I do hate the fact that since GW1 is a massive lottery anyway, you are basically getting double luck if you happen to have the right players to get you points and get you massive price rises. I'd bet that nobody who won GW1 ever finished in the top 10k, because their picks are too random and don't reflect the reasoned approach taken by fanatics like us (no matter how bad the fanatic picks end up looking after 1-2 weeks 🙂 )

It is really hard to know. I don't much mind what system FPL use and I don't much mind if they change it from season to season. What I do mind is the manual intervention.

For example, the behaviour of the price change mechanism around the DGWs last season was too erratic not to have involved some hands-on interference, even if only by deciding when to switch the higher thresholds on and off again.

The Pedro incident when he arrived at Chelsea was another clear example - he started as a price protected player but someone forgot to switch that off. After scoring and assisting on his Chelsea debut he had huge NTIs without ever getting a price rise. Then he was flagged and the NTIs were reset to zero when the flag came off. And after that his price plummeted, leaving owners without the protection of the rises he should already have had.

Little things like that are very unfair. It would be nice for things to be transparent but, you know, actually they are. 😕 FPL's clear position is that they don't want us to know, they reserve the right to intervene if they (subjectively) feel it to be necessary and that we shouldn't count on a static system. We may not like that (I don't) but it's not as if it has been concealed.

What we really mean by "transparent" is "stable and predictable". That's what most 'serious' managers want. But that's exactly what FPL don't want us to have.

Personally, what I have seen so far this season smacks of manual intervention but I can't know that for sure. Maybe they have just increased the thresholds massively. But the 'reluctance' of certain players to fall in price (Zaha for example) certainly smells of fish to me. 🙁

I think intervention is the worst. But even changing the rules when some are privy of the changes is not right too.

How does this WC team look:

    0.1 ITB

    Foster - Elliot
    Trippier - Hegazi - Bailly - Mbemba - Britos
    Salah - Pogba - Eriksen - Mooy - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Mounie

I think it would be very very hasty to ditch him at this stage when his stats in GW1 were ok and there was an obvious reason for him blanking last night. He actually was in line for a bonus point until about 2 mins from the end of the game last night.

Thanks. I know what you mean, I rate him very highly but based on what I've seen so far he is definitely not looking better value compared to either Silva or Pogba. He's shown some promise but no indication of a haul that you would expect from a 10m mid

It just happens that the DEFS who have scored have generally kept clean sheets as well so have grabbed the 3 BPs.

Alonso is the exception to that, but he did score twice.

Egg-ball players are often derogatory about the greatest sport in the world saying, without irony, that it's just a bunch of blokes rolling about. Sad thing is they are so often correct. That City Everton game was just another embarrassment.

    - Baines got his toe clipped by Walker and acted like he'd broke his leg.
    - Otamendi claimed a finger brushing his lips was a forceful elbow to the face.
    - Aguero watched Schneiderlin slide to intercept the ball and then deliberately stepped across him to create contact, going down like he'd had his ankle snapped.

These players are all going to be defended at some point by the proposition that they are being "professional" which makes no sense at all as part of their profession is sportsmanly conduct within the game. Some might even say that Aguero "won" himself a free kick, what ever that means.

It's the modern game I suppose. A sorry state of affairs where pride in your toughness and resilience to an opponent's physicality has been replaced by showing weakness, feigning injury, and attempts to con the Referees who will continue to try and referee on the assumption that the players aren't all just a bunch of weasely cheats out to screw each other over rather that entertain the crowd.

    Meh 🙁

Yep, Egg-Ball players don't need to cheat, they usually have actually had their eyes gouged out, ball ripped off, been punched, stamped on and had their necks broken by being slammed head first into the ground. Real gentlemen

        don't disparage egg chasing!

We were taught in school even if you dislocate your shoulder get up, get back in the defensive line to at least pretend you're there to defend. When there's a break in play then get treatment.

Thoughts on taking a -4 hit looking at this team (I already made one transfer)

    Foster (Gomes)

    Cedric Jones Cook (Cahill Rangel)

De Bruyne Alli Eriksen Allen (Kante)

    Rooney Lukaku Chicarito

My dilemma is obvious coming into GW3, I have both Cook and De Bruyne. Having the two directly contradict each other. I would have more faith in De Bruyne in this game because the way Bourmouth were in the first two games. However, the short term at least after this game is in doubt for him. Is it worth taking him or Cook out of the team for a hit?

Iwobi AND Jesus looking to both drop tonight? How likely that happens? If so that's really not helpful - ideally looking to transfer out Jesus tomorrow (after EFL games and Pool game) rather than jumping the gun.

Why do people move so quickly when making transfers? There's still quite a few variables between now and the next GW.

      Sigh.
