Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 3

Something’s got to give this Gameweek. Someone’s going to be wrong.

Nearly 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have ditched Harry Kane since the weekend, but our Scouts are sticking by him.

The Spurs striker has one last chance to break his August hoodoo when Burnley come to Wembley on Sunday. You suspect the combined expertise of our Fantasy Football Scout regulars and current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg might not be so forgiving again should he blank for the third successive match.

Marcos Alonso’s double against Spurs means he’s also popular, while Crystal Palace assets in defence and attack are feeling the love despite the zero points that Frank de Boer’s men have thus far returned this season.

The visit of shot-shy Swansea City to Selhurst Park is the reason for that, but more predictable big guns – Chrisitan Eriksen and Henrikh Mkhitaryan among them – dominate our Scouts’ thoughts in midfield.

Here are the initial opinions of our selection panel.

Paul says…

I was intending to favour Watford’s left flank at home to Brighton, with both Jose Holebas and Richarlison likely to trouble the visitors’ veterans right-back, Bruno.

Both produced four key passes in the win at Bournemouth, while the Brazilian’s total of eight shots in the box is top for midfielders after two Gameweeks.

But Holebas’ dismissal in the Carabao Cup puts paid to that, although the in-form Richarlison remains in my plans.

Pep Guardiola’s decision to haul off Gabriel Jesus at the break against Everton has me second-guessing Man City’s side for their visit to Bournemouth. David Silva’s budget-friendly 8.0 price tag brings him into contention, having created more chances than any team-mate so far.

I’m keeping faith with Harry Kane. Number one forward for shots and efforts in the box, he hosts a Burnley outfit that placed second-bottom for attempts conceded in the penalty area last term.

Christian Benteke could also be in profit at home to a Swansea City side that sits bottom for shots conceded in the box and big chances against. No forward has registered more big chances than the Palace striker, despite his failure to find the net.

Peter says…

The boringly predictable Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have served me well in both the Scout Picks and my own squad since Gameweek One, even if points have tended to come late on in matches. There are compelling arguments in favour of Paul Pogba and even Anthony Martial, but I’m staying loyal to my original pairing. For now.

By contrast, my faith in Bournemouth’s assets is rapidly failing. I know that Manchester City failed to impress on Monday night, but I think they’ll bounce back against a Cherries side which lacks the confidence or defensive stability which Everton showed in abundance. While I feel reports of Kevin De Bruyne’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, I’m going for the cheaper and less hairy option of David Silva.

As highlighted in recent articles, Harry Kane’s August hoodoo conceals the fact that he has fired off 14 attempts on goal, eleven in the box and four on target.

Burnley have been fairly miserly in terms of shots conceded in the box, but my view of the phrase ‘class is permanent’ means Kane can’t go three games without a blank, so I’m holding on come hell or high water.

On the other hand, Christian Eriksen has been delivering his usual regular assists, while promising some goal threat himself, and he too retains his position in my squad, along with team-mate Ben Davies.

Brighton have conceded more big chances (six) than anyone bar Swansea, while Watford – perhaps surprisingly – lie fifth for shots on target, so bringing in Richarlison seems an easy shout.

The Seagulls may also struggle to find their first goal of the season against the Hornets, so Miguel Britos fills another cheap slot. Overall, it’s an interesting week in terms of fixtures and quite a few low to mid-range assets could top the weekly points by 6pm on Sunday.

Jonty says…

Spurs’ clash with Burnley on Sunday is dominating my selection.

Given that the Clarets only managed 13 goals on the road last season, I’m backing clean sheet points for my top defender pick Ben Davies. He also gets my vote after registering more corners than Christian Eriksen so far this campaign.

Speaking of the Dane, he is my top midfielder this week after assisting all three of Spurs goals so far. With Burnley failing to keep a clean sheet to this point – and only mustering four shut-outs on the road last season – this looks an ideal fixture for him.

One of the reasons I’ve shunned Kevin De Bruyne for the trip to Bournemouth is that I think Eriksen offers the chance of more points this week and beyond, for 0.5 less.

However, I’d still like to see Manchester City attacking coverage, so have nominated David Silva for inclusion. In a free central midfield role, he has created nine chances so far – the same as Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan and only one less than the league’s most creative player, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

Harry Kane has to be my top striker for this set of fixtures, despite his failure to score against Newcastle and Chelsea this season, or indeed ever in the Premier League during August. With the goals imminent table in hand, I’ll be referring to his 14 goal attempts over that period – more than any other player so far – to back him as the first name on the Scout Picks’ teamsheet.

Elsewhere, West Ham’s trip to Newcastle appeals as the Hammers look to capitalise on a strong attacking display in their 3-2 loss away to Southampton. Michail Antonio is perhaps slightly over priced at 7.5 but I think, given his four shots and lowly 0.3% ownership, he could reward those who draft him in.

However, I concede that a Spot the Differential article place may be more fitting for him, particularly as his team-mate Javier Hernandez (7.1) has a kinder price tag and heads into the weekend off a St Mary’s brace.

Mark says…

I’ve tried desperately not to give in to knee-jerk tendencies, keeping faith with some names that – so far this week – have been labelled as disposable by some.

To an extent, that begins in defence where I’m taking a risk on Kieran Trippier.

I want to cover Spurs’ rearguard against Burnley and, while Ben Davies clearly has merits, I can’t dismiss Trippier’s qualities as a provider of goals. Five assists from six starts last season demonstrated his talents and, if he’s passed fit for Gameweek 3 as I expect, then he has to be in the Picks.

In attacking areas, I’m refusing to give up on Manchester City just yet.

I’ve retained both Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus. The trip to Bournemouth looks to be the ideal fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side to make a statement – only Swansea have allowed more chances than the Cherries so far this season.

An early breakthrough for City will bring Bournemouth on to them, and I can see their attack picking them off with three or four goals. De Bruyne and Jesus remain the star attractions for me – despite back-to-back blanks.

But the Spurs attack also has to be covered. Both Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane look essential, but hopefully, with the likes of Matt Phillips and Andre Gray in my squad, I’ve put forward some value options to help balance the budget come Friday.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be Malcolm Tucker for England manager. This is his ninth season, with 2013/14’s finish of 8,086 his best yet.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last Gameweek’s champion Urchin beat the Scouts 34 to 23 and is now the manager to beat in the race for the £100 prize.

I see this being said a lot, and really don't understand that sentiment.

You don't build a squad for just a week.

You don't get points for money on the pitch.

So just start whoever you think will score more that week?

You're missing the point here. You're not buying a 6m mid looking at away fixtures. It's the home fixtures that are the draw. With budget mids, either there is a clear cut choice or it's a toss-up. In case of a clear choice like say an on-fire Capoue from 2016, you will rarely see questions like Phillips or Capoue, since everyone will just play Capoue. When it's not clear, it's worth reminding people that they bought those budget options for the home games anyway, so you might as well play him.

                  Thanks for responding.

I don't know exactly what bias that's called, but am sure there's a name for it. 🙂

I do think the decision to start someone should be based on points expected that week, not the price you paid for them or needing to justify the rationale for buying them in the first place.

(and this is not just about cheap mids, same goes for benching expensive defenders)

Mate, no one said just play the higher priced mid every time. We are saying play the higher priced mid over the lower priced mid if both aren't returning well and especially if the higher priced mid is playing a weak team at home. It is not easy to predict expected points in a week for budget mids. So you look at a bunch of factors, prices and fixtures being a couple of them. A higher price for a budget mid in general implies a player more likely to return points. As I said earlier, if you are being tempted by a lower priced mid, it is because they have been playing well, in which case, you simply play the player in form.

In the question I asked, you cannot make a confident case that Carroll will outscore Phillips given both have been fairly mediocre so far. So how do you choose? You cannot expect anyone responding to go look at stats for each of the players involved, the opposition they are facing, goal attempts and so on before replying to a simple A or B question. You have a fair idea of how they play, and you make an educated guess depending on the team form and so on.

This discussion should only apply to budget mids. Defenders are different since they get points for a team clean sheet. With mids, you need to predict individual attacking returns. Completely different discussions.

Punted on Ritchie and JWP as 3rd, 4th mids to start to the season on combo rationale of: 1. Enabled front 3 of Kane, Aguero, Firmino; 2. Both seem to have upside/promise; 3. Fixtures; 4. Set piece responsibility; 5. Ritchie pens.

Still believe in Ritchie as 4th. Losing faith in JWP. Both still have good fixtures. But JWP gametime looks in doubt.

Disinclined to drop Firmino at this stage, as I think he retains strong potential over the season, and I do not yet see the 6.5M or lower striker I am willing to trade him for to upgrade JWP to a proper 8.0M +midfielder (1.0M itb).

May eventually sacrifice Firmino if a solid bargain striker emerges, but presently eyeing a short term fix for JWP. So: Richarlison or Mooy? Or hold fire?

Maybe it'll change with time. I won't say anyone dislikes the gravless because they are gravless. It's just annoying that they don't bother to read the previous conversations before posting a question.
I think that Mark has been making some changes at a good pace. The site will, i think change in a few months more than how much it has changed till now

I think the real problem with being gravless is that people on here don't really care if you don't contribute. If you don't have a grav, it becomes nearly impossible to recognize someone that you've seen posting before.

This place has an unhealthy obsession with gravs. Some people do not care to read the name beside the gravs. The likes of Team Cruel, Diesel, Witty Pun etc. are gravless but they are not here to only post Rmts or get help from others. So I don't think a post made by a gravless person is discriminated if it has quality.

Saying no one likes the gravless because they're gravless is silly. They do. Genuine issue. Genuinely encouraged by how the site is set up. Make getting a grav part of registering and problem solved.

There is a right place and right time to do everything. Trying to take down a dog in its own den is not such a good idea when it's supported by too many of them. It's better to do so when the bubble around him bursts.

No problem. My problem with them isn't so much in the fact that someone is one person who doesn't have a grav that really does not matter is is with the group as a whole

It is more that at times it seems as if there is an endless stream of gravless people with names which you never see again. I tend to think of them like zombie hordes who come and take but don't give.

The grav aids recognition and helps set you apart

Of course there are people who transcend gravlessness as well.

Agreed. As I was mentioning above, there are many gravless posters who are a part of the furniture here. And it's difficult to imagine them with a grav. Many of the hot topics and hulked posts are by gravless.
I have always requested them only 1 thing. Care to read the earlier posts before posting something.

I always answer a question if I know the answer or have an advice to give, grav or otherwise.
But I think people without Grav are generally not interested in being a responsible member of the group.
They come and ask their questions and leave.
So there is a correlation between the number of gavless and the quality of discussion in the group.
You expect all members to participate the best they can which involves occasionally helping others out.

It's an issue of misunderstood causation. If you don't care about being a member, you won't get a grav. The problem arises because we take the converse to also be true. It makes sense to some degree because if you have a grav, you clearly cared enough about being part of this community to get one, but of course people get excluded by this line of thinking.

I've known plenty of quality posters that don't have a grav... or that I specifically encouraged to get a grav because they never thought about it and they are quality people.

This is nonsense. It's an icon... like posting your status on FB... and frankly I don't care who just checked into a concert of some washed up band from the 1990s... what I care about is the quality of the person.

The difference between this site and Facebook is that I've never met a single person on this site. When I think of a FFS user, the first thing that pops into my head is their grav.

That's great, but it's not true for many. My point is that gravs have already become such an integral part of this site that they become a major part of a user's perception.

I make that assumption from personal experience. I am an admin in a FB football group of 27k members.
Many members make fake accounts to join the group just for petty banter.
They use distasteful language that put off most regular members who prefer to have a sensible discussion.

I'm not saying that a gravless member is a problem, I'm saying its more likely that they have no interest in actively participating in the forum. IMO all members having constructive discussions is essential for a community to improve, admins alone can't do it.

If admin of this site thinks having a grav is important, embed registering for a grav into registering for the site or provide a hyperlink. There's no need for it to be labrythian unless you want to foster this apartheid like divisiveness.

    So Eriksen V Alli
    Mane v other Liverpool mids
    Pogba V Mkhi

Alli scores more goals - for a midfielder this is 5 points

Eriksen get more assists only worth 3, but it's the bonus points where Eriksen catches up. It's really that simply

Eriksen certainly passed the eye test more than Alli against Chelsea but the difference between transfers in this week is silly.

I am going Alli based on the fact he is younger and might have more room to improve and goals are more fun that assists 🙂

Will use the same sort off logic to go for Mane at pool.

But probably Mhki over Pogba he is a more prolific assister and possibly a more prolific goal scorer too.

    So Alli Mane Mkhi

    What ye think?

      Eriksen Salah Pogba

      Erik is not old so the age argument is irrelevant this year; Eriksen just looks in incredible form right now;

      Salah looks like the energizer bunny and although Mane is always great, he is coming off a knee injury; Salah got rested last weekend so he is the most rested now;

I just took Pogba thinking that Mkhy keeps getting subbed off but Pogba plays 90 plus... he just rates more in Mourinho's eyes. I was thinking Mkhy after week one but Pogba looked legit Week 2

    Hi guys,

Need some help with my team this GW:

    Forster

    Bert Alonso Kolasinac

    Matic Atsu Willian KDB

    Kane Kaku Firmino

    (Elliot | T.Caroll Lowe Rosenior)

*Will probably play 4-3-3 this GW with Lowe replacing Matic
*Plan to WC after this GW
*1 FT left, thinking of KDB => D. Silva for now

    Suggestions?

Hold IMO. KDB to Silva is a downgrade in a lot of ways.

Thanks, my idea was to get all the heavy hitters (Kaku, Kane & KDB) so that it will be easier to downgrade later on (if necessary), honestly feel that my midfield isn't really balanced, but yea, think it's best to hold for this GW.

If you're going down the Alonso route you're pretty much committing to the 7Mil price tag and riding out all fixtures, hence the long term comment.

Mane and Mkhi look to be on decent form atm and likely immediate returns.

Personally, I've gone A and rolled the dice hoping they outperform B over the next 10 GWs .

      B. Huds are very decent thus far, good shout for returns on both ends.
      C. The rest of the defensive line is ravaged by injury, although WestHam have yet to show any kind of consistency.

      A very begrudging C.

Its a very tough argument to make for not having Kaku, pogba however can be covered elsewhere.

KDB will come good, he is just that good. Even watching the last game, he was the best player on the pitch.

      KDB+Kaku

    Any comment KDB+Austin to Pogba+Chica

    But I already have Luka+Mkhi

    Any other thought?

Wouldn't triple up on United attack. Find another way to get Chicha in.

Didnt Austin just score a pen?

Seems jerky, hold IMO and see how WestHam play before pulling the trigger.

KDB to Eriks if you have 2 FTs and bank the other.

I think the big issue with Austin is that he hasn't started.

    Good morning DZ.

Which is the best move here?

    A) Daniels to Trippier(Aurier is happening?)
    B) Daniels to Dawson
    C) Fraser to Jese/Richarlison

    0.5m itb.

    Thanks.

Trippier is a unknown atm since he picked up a knock at the end of last game. Wait for pressers before going A

Cheers. You think if he's fit he's worth getting despite the Aurier rumours?

It's nothing but rumor atm, although if its true Aurier will be 1st choice if he comes.

I'd be stunned if Aurier comes to Tottenham. He's been denied a visa before, why would it change now?

Yeah I think so too. But someone on here last night said the same thing happened with Rojo. But I don't know the details.

Did you pay 6.0 to bench such a premium defender? Don't just wishing clean sheet for premium def, that was what I did to Alonso last game

True. I benched Alonzo in my Draft team last week... Doh. But RLC has a chance to get points especially with no Zaha. Liverpool are going to tear that Gooners back line to shreds...
