Scout Notes – Europa League

A truly spectacular Gylfi Sigurdsson goal secures Everton a 1-1 draw in Croatia that sees them safely through to the group stages of this season’s Europa League.

Here are the notes from a memorable away day for the Toffees.

Sigurdsson stars

It took the time a volleyed ball travels 50 yards for Gylfi Sigurdsson to announce himself as an Everton player.

The Iceland international marked his first start for the Merseyside club by scoring one of the more memorable goals of this, or any other, season when he shot from wide on the right and sent the ball over the Hajduk Split keeper and into the net.

He has always had an eye for a goal – he’s hit 42 of them across six Premier League campaigns, often for a struggling Swansea City side – but few come close to his spectacular effort in Croatia.

It was the high point of a generally impressive personal run-out.

Ronald Koeman shifted from his 3-5-2 used at Man City to revert to a familiar 4-2-3-1, with Wayne Rooney as a lone striker supported by Ademola Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the flanks.

Sigurdsson was handed the Number 10 role, but such is the fluidity in Everton’s attacking line-up that the new man frequently popped up wide on the left – a position in which he excelled at Swansea City – while Rooney, as ever, often dropped deep to enable the Icelander to run beyond him.

At the back, Cuco Martina weas recalled as Phil Jagielka and Mason Holgate dropped to the bench. That compounds the uncertainty at right-back, which is problematic for us as we remain unclear who the potential 4.5 option could be.

Everton struggled in the first half, absorbing large swathes of pressure as they defended a 2-0 first leg advantage.

They went in a goal down at the interval, but Sigurdsson’s strike, seconds into the second period, transformed the team.

Aaron Lennon’s half-time introduction, at the expense of Lookman, brought pace and directness on the right and Rooney (twice) and Calvert-Lewin wasted big chances to secure an away victory as Sigurdsson grew ever more influential.

The matches keep on coming

The Toffees came through a tough test in Croatia, but now face three more of them over the next three Gameweeks, starting with a trip to Chelsea on Sunday and then taking in Spurs at home and a visit to Old Trafford the other side of the international break.

Davy Klaasen has a foot injury that is likely to keep him sidelined until after the international break and with Morgan Schneiderlin suspended and Sandro struggling with a heel problem, Koeman currently has few options in midfield and further forward.

The manager chose to omit Idrissa Gueye, who was recovering from a minor hamstring problem, with the Senegal international expected to be swapped in for Schneiderlin in the double pivot for the Chelsea match.

The schedule will ease, and yet stiffen

Fantasy Premier League investment in Everton assets has been relatively modest, with only four players currently enjoying double-digit ownership.

One of those, Jordan Pickford (10.7%), saved a penalty in Split and has settled superbly into his new club.

Defenders Michael Keane (14.2%) and Leighton Baines (10.3%) join the keenly-priced Rooney (7.5 and 19.3%) to complete that quartet, with managers shying away while the Toffees continue to endure their testing early schedule.

Sigurdsson (5.4%) will surely join Everton’s double-figure club sooner rather than later, particularly as the side’s domestic fixtures ease from Gameweek 6 onwards, with back-to-back home matches with Bournemouth and Burnley.

Those encounters signal the start of a run in which only clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool stand out as major tests all the way through to Gameweek 19.

But their qualification for the group stages of the Europa League means that Everton will now have to play twice-weekly in September (two times), October, November (twice again) and early in December, which could lead to a degree of rotation.

Their first group match will take place three days before a trip to Manchester United, while the third precedes a visit from Arsenal and their final match comes just two days before the Merseyside derby.

why is that ? KDB last 2 game he played more like a CM in Peps New style sp no dramas at all with swooping Erikson to KDB...imo even if KDB scores this week Erikson is a guy scoring all season long.

KDB only dropped deep - very deep - after the sending off. He'll be up behind the strikers alternating with Silva at Bournemouth I imagine.

Not doubting that KDB to Eriksen is a good move, but it depends on how they compare in GW3. Both capable of big hauls or blanks.

This is true but like Mark just said he will be alternating with Silva who may steal potential points assists etc. whereas Eriksen is the main man feeding both Kane and Alli. Just my opinion though 😉

Yeah, I agree but we're talking about whether its wise to move from KDB to Eriksen for GW3 - I'm not questioning the move beyond that.

It could easily work out, it could easily backfire. It would have been far easier to make that move had KDB faced a testing fixture. It's quite the opposite based on recent meetings between the two.

I'm holding De Bruyne. I don't no if it is getting older or what but patience is a great thing when you learn it (or in my case still learning it). KDB effectively only had one real game to judge him off, since City were down to 10 men he was playing deeper. He is a great player and I am just waiting for him to return the faith.

That said I can see why people are getting Ericksen. Having watched both Spurs games, he looks very threatening. His through passes and set pieces look very dangerous. But it is only two games in and I don't want to jump on the notion that two games is a good bench mark, seeing as in the past I wouldn't wait on a player and boot him to early.

two games isn't a good bench mark but a year and two games is and eriksen offers better value for similar points, perhaps more, again

Many of us, me including is going to (C) Kane this week . I did some research to check how he played at Wembley till now. If I'm correct he played 13 games altogether (Spurs plus England) and scored 5 goals. No assists. His last games:
    Chelsea : 0-0
    Juventus : 1-0
    Chelsea -:1-0
    Gent :own goal
    CSKA - 1-0
He also did not score in any of last 4 England games.

Eriksen though played very effectively. Last 5 games
    Chelsea : 0-1
    Juventus : 1-0
    Chelsea : 0-2
    Gent : 1-1
    CSKA: 0-1

It gives you 2 goals and 5 assists in last 5.

Thequestion is ... is it better to captain Eriksen or stick with Kane?

    1. bojack
      • 7 Years

      Kane for me.

He's hit the post twice and had more efforts that any other player.

You'd think the larger pitch would work against a side like Burnley, rather than for them. Turf Moor is on of the smaller pitches and they're much better at home.

Based on those stats Kane will never score again. Stats are ok to follow but Kane will start scoreing and he will start soon. People just think this is that week, thats all

I'm going for Kane probably one of the rare weeks he has a plum fixture and Lukaku will be given the armband by majority.

If he explodes it's nothing but green arrows. Worth taking the risk on him imo I don't know why I'm calling it a risk actually we're talking about Kane here.

        1. Tshelby
          • 9 Years

I would rather give Lukaku the armband cause everybody has him and the combo Kane Lukaku is still a differential I think

If you have Kane in your team who cost 12,5 and you don't give him an armband so why bother and have him ? waste of money. This week is definitely the best occasion to make him captain.

            1. Tshelby
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

Imo if I would have Kane and Lukaku I would just put it on Lukaku and have Kane as my differential. Currently Lukaku is more on form than Kane.

I mean if Lukaku gets a big haul it will hurt you really bad because of the ownership + people giving him the armband

I would not say Lukaku has better form than Kane, the difference between them is few centimeters. In both games Kane shot the post. lukaku's shot in post got in, Kane's not.

Yeah but is he shooting from positions where he is expected to score from? Hitting the post from 5 yards is different than hitting it from 20 yards.

Tbh, the ones where he hit the post were good strikes and should've gone in.

But his other shots never looked like going in. He shot one straight at Courtois from outside the box, and another from a difficult angle from inside the box that Courtois parried. I wasn't that impressed with him in the Chelsea game and thought that the Scoutcast team extraordinarily overhyped him, saying he's already the Golden Boot favorite and all.

I think there are many good strikers available this season.

So thinking about not going with lukaku. It can be a differential when everyone is going for lukaku or lukaku (c)

sure about firmino considering liverpool's fixtures?

Not doubting his potential, just concerned as sturridge is in contention. Rotation or OOP can be a problem

Any FPL old timers here who used the fplanalyzer plugin which meant you could adjust the fixtures on your "my team" page on fpl? Is there something like that still available?

Never seen anything like this. It would be useful though if I could easily look at my team for gwk8 say.

        Repost...which of these is better/safer:
        A) Trippier + Hegazi
        B) Davies + Fernandez/Mee/Lowe

A for now, although neiter is 100% safe long-term.

        https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/4318471/tottenham-transfer-news-serge-aurier-medical-psg/

Serge Aurier, still legal issues and it is the Sun, but could be complicated for Trippier owners

        Hi Guys,

I have Willian but thinking of moving on as Pedro and Hazard come closer to returning.

What are your thoughts on moving him on now or next game week or not at all and if you were to move him on who would you recommend?

        Thanks again
