The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Saturday

The Manchester clubs are united in tormenting Fantasy Football managers.

In fairness, we should have expected Pep Guardiola’s City teamsheet to prove a source of frustration. It should come as no real surprise.

Even so, he seems determined to baffle us.

Having withdrawn Gabriel Jesus at half-time on Monday night following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, it appeared to signal that Guardiola’s affections were leaning towards Sergio Aguero for the lone striker role.

But just six days later, it was Aguero who made way as the City manager shuffled his formation and personnel in a bid to solve the frustration of Monday’s misses.

Aguero travelled to the Vitality Stadium today on the back of seven goals in his last seven away trips. He was backed by over 265,000 (5.7%) Fantasy Premier League managers with the captaincy.

Inevitably, Jesus took his opportunity to justify his selection. He served up his first goal of the season at Bournemouth having been sold by over 119,000 managers, triggering a 0.1 drop in price.

To make matters worse Aguero, along with today’s other omission from Monday’s teamsheet – John Stones – were both introduced from the bench by Guardiola. Auto-subs and Vice Captains were nullified.

City’s formation change – a move to 4-3-3 – also saw Kevin De Bruyne retreated alongside David Silva and Fernandinho as part of a central three.

That role muted his goal threat and again left him probing around the fringes of City’s 2-1 victory.

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 3 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

But those brief flashes will be lost on his Fantasy owners. They will continue to plot the exit of a 10.0 priced asset that has delivered three successive blanks. De Bruyne has already been sold more than any other player since the passing of today’s deadline.

As for United, while they engineered a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Leicester City at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers were left smarting by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss.

It remains to be seen if this dents Lukaku’s stock. There will be an ongoing debate on whether he will retain spot-kicks and whether Paul Pogba could be the beneficiary in waiting.

But for now, we can only consider what comes next in this current Gameweek.

Captained by over 1.7 million (37.3%) FPL managers, Lukaku’s zero point return sat alongside Aguero’s failing and a first blank from Pogba to set up Sunday’s performers.

Spurs’ Harry Kane now heads into a Wembley date with Burnley sporting over 741,000 armbands. Some 53% of his 1.3 million owners have trusted him as their skipper.

Confidence in Kane has been dented following his two single point returns, but now the scene is set for him to deliver the season’s first major twist.

A double-figure tally would cause a significant swing. Couple that with an impressive performance from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and it would represent a turning point that could spark transfer hits and Wildcards aplenty.

While Saturday disappointed, it means that Sunday could be huge for all kinds of reasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What would you do to this team? 1FT. Maybe WC?

    Elliot (Mignolet)
    Bellerin - Ake - Valencia - FosuMensah - 4M
    Willian - Ayew - Mkhi - Can - Iwobi
    Aguero - Benteke - Kane

Either WC or take 1-2 hits. Something like:

      Iwobi & Benteke -> Ramsey & Chica

for me save WC - just take a few hits - players like Sanchez, Hazard etc still to come back, I'd say wait until 'essential ' players start to emerge before WC

Without a bench you have 10 starters, so i guess the benched mid is someone who gets gametime. It seems ok (template) without risks. WBA, SOU, MUN, CPL nice fixtures seem to end and CL games are about to start so changes need to be done. 6/10

If I were to wildcard my team this is what it would look like, Thoughts on this WC team?

    Forster (Elliot)
Alonso - Maguire - Jones - Cedric (Naughton)
Eriksen - Mkhi - Ramsey - Atsu (Caroll)
    Kane - Kaku (Abraham)

This team leaves me with 1.0 to upgrade Eriksen to Hazard if he starts firing

Defence is a bit heavy...4 5m+ defenders, Naughton for backup AND 5m in goal.

If you want Hazard upgrade money, take it out of defence and Alonso...upgrade Ramsey, not Eriksen

Made a similar post on the previous page, and the consensus seemed to be Maguire or a Southampton defender (I already had a West Brom defender). Since you already have Yoshida I'd say either Maguire or Dawson would be a decent replacement. Not sure if Hegazi is nailed on long term once Evans/McCauley are back

        Triple West Brom defence.....
Danilo, Xhaka, Gabbi and Hernandez can all be upgraded especially with 5.9 mil in the bank.
        IMO

Triple defense not an issue as long as they are keeping CSs and fixtures are decent

Hernandez is fine for 2-3 weeks.

A hit will do the job at this stage

I can see where you're coming from but for me I would never go triple defence and never have 5.9 mil sitting around doing nothing....

Get Kane in for Gabbi ASAP...thats a start.

Danilo's OK for at least one more game while Walker's suspended...do that transfer the week after. Switch to something a bit cheaper 5m or 5.5m.

Then deal with Milo the week after that...hopefully you'll have 2m ITB to pick out a good 6-7m mid.

Don't WC...you'll have a good team with a few transfers and a bit of patience.

With all that money ITB and a decent core to the team I don't think it's necessary. Getting rid of Willian and uprgrading Gabbiadini would be a good start and then you can work on that bench later. Perfectly decent starting 11 atm

There will be 2 weeks with possible injuries and transfers. I would either WC now or wait until last day to do 2-3 transfers. SInce you have the funds, i wouldnt WC atm, 2 accurate transfers is what you need and you ll have time to think about it.

Only just seen the footage of the celebrations following City's winner.

Shocking stuff seeing a steward pinning that lad on the floor and a copper with him in an arm lock. Absolutely disgusting. Good on Agüero for showing the steward up.

If you've not been in the away end before in that situation then you might not understand I suppose but NOTHING justifies their actions. Bullies and scumbags.

I forget that FFS is an international community and maybe from the outside looking in there's a bad reputation for English football fans. But celebrating a winning goal does not warrant that response. There are ways to deal with those situations, this was not one of those ways.

The stewards have to think of player safety and avoid clashes which can arise from over exuberance, including stopping fans trespassing on the pitch. If you don't want to be accosted by one, stay off the pitch

      1. Football Weekender
        • 7 Years

I understand this. I don't understand why one steward had to pin the lad down, another one had to have him in a chokehold and a police officer had him in an armlock... that's fully mental.

I can't believe you think that fans dancing on the pitch is acceptable and shouldn't be dealt with. I've not seen the incident itself, from your description it does sound a bit ott, but the fact is that he shouldn't have been on the pitch in the first place.

I do not think fans dancing on the pitch acceptable and shouldn't be dealt with. I have not said that. I've said that sometimes it happens and there are ways to deal with it. This was dealt with terribly.

You haven't even watched it you're giving your opinion on it? Seriously, go away.

And what if he doesn't calmly go back, what if he's drunk an or violent. Fans should not go on the pitch in any situation. You don't know the full details and what decisions the stewards had to make in a short timeframe, and Aguero getting involved just makes it worse, why can't you see there is more than one perspective on this?

      Agree 100%

This is a case of harmless trespassing. They could simply show the person back to his seat. No need for excessive violence, and Aguero obviously got upset seeing it up close.

Exactly. I've been at plenty of matches where people have been on the pitch and shown back to the stands with minimum fuss. This was crazy. I hope Agüero and the City players get involved and some stewards & police are held to account.

AFC Bournemouth and Dorset Police Twitter has exploded with complaints, so they can't ignore it.

You are absolutely right! No need for that, just move him of the pitch dont push him down and jump on him like he is some kind of criminal. Cant believe all that talking about Kun getting suspended for defending the guy, he did what everybody normal would do. Two words - Monica Seles

The stewards or police have absolutely no idea if a fan has a knife or something. The look on the players face would also be interesting when in the dock for inciting the crowd that caused a steward to be killed

That's a very extreme case and I'm not sure you can do anything to stop random crazy acts of lunacy like that, although a valid point. I don't think the police or stewards conduct in this situation was acceptable whatsoever. They made the situation worse.

Also worth pointing out that the steward who reported an allegation of assault against Agüero, retracted it when the footage showed him as the aggressor. The whole thing stinks.

Having seen a policeman walked pass me by his colleagues with a dart fully embedded in his head during the Swansea v Cardiff Welsh cup final about 35 years ago, I suspect I might err on the side of caution if I was a steward or police officer at a football match and I had to restrain a fan doing something he should not do

I can understand erring on the side of caution. I think three fully grown men pinning and choking a young lad weighing no more than 10 stone to the floor is going beyond that.

In that situation you simply don't take the risk that the bloke has a blade or something

zero risk and restraint = steward goes home to his family.

Stay in your seat = fan does not get restrained

Players not inciting the crowd by jumping in to the fans = no incident

... and you blame the Steward and police ?

I don't agree with the premise of treating every single person as though they may have a knife or a bomb or whatever. That's just not how I live my life. And I'll always stand up for the fans as I really do believe the stewards and police abuse their power at times. Most of them are sound but a lot aren't. I've seen it with my own eyes

Fans will be on the pitch at some point again this season and I hopefully it'll be dealt with better and they'll go back to their seats with a minimum of fuss.

That's a totally different incident - if you go on the pitch to confront a player then you're a fool.

Celebrating a goal is very different, yesterday everyone surged forward as the goal went in so you've got a potential crush/trampling situation on your hands. The policing and stewarding made the situation even more dangerous.

Additionally, there's "reasonable" force and "excessive" force. Yesterday was the latter in my opinion. I'd imagine that opinion will be shared by Bournemouth given the outrage expressed across social media and a few of those stewards will be let go.

if fans know they will be physically restrained if they go on the pitch then they won't do it as much, irrespective of the intent. This laissez-faire approach of saying 'I say old chap, would you ever so much mind please leaving the pitch' when 20 or 30 frenzied fans are spilling on to the pitch, pushed by the fans behind and egged on by the players is simply something that can't be tolerated or become common place in football.

Guessing the intent or reaction of a fan that needs to be ejected from the pitch is not an option really, or not one that the stewards should have to take

Your frontline makes all other lines weak. WC only if you are willing to change 2 out of 3 strikers so that you ll have funds to fix defence and midfield. If you want to keep those 3 upfront just take a hit and change a mid and a def at a time.

Awesome GW so far. Beating the average by 20pts, 1m rank boost. Kane(c), Eriksen, Salah and Trippier up today.

Captaincy next week, yeah...no great options next week...I have no Arsenal. Probably plonk it on Kane or Lukaku again.

Same. I did less transfers this season compared to last season. This 2nd season I plan to take less hits this season, yes, price changes are good. But, I try to balance it out.

Hopefully my 2FT will enable me to get back on track after the international break.

It was the 2nd week in a row i felt my team was pretty decent. Yesterday's transfer for Britos (decided between him, Naughton and Lowe) together with Benteke's third blank and some other poor choices made me hit the WC button yesterday. Plus CL games are about to start so i believe this is the time to change the whole team. Next GW games are not ideal for captaincy or heavy hitters choice but there are 2 weeks ahead to gain info and check fixtures from now on.

Eriksen - Willian - Ramsey - Richarlison (Caroll)

Do you though? I reckon Alli and Eriksen could score about 210 pts. Kane could score 250pts. But I save £3m by having Alli or Eriksen which would more than compensate for the 40 pts as I could upgrade the midfield to get someone like Mane rather than Ritchie or Jese

            It's only the captaincy.

If Spurs have a standout fixture, everyone will captain Kane. You could captain Alli/Eriksen, they are definitely captaincy material. But there were a few times last season when Kane scored double figures in the same game that Alli/Eriksen just got single figures. So even if you captain them, you will miss out.

You can't have all 4. Even having just Sanchez, Kane and Lukaku wrecks the rest of your team.

Not interested in Hazard for now. Returns when we least expect, so not captaincy material for his price.

Interested in Sanchez but would like to see if Lacazette can keep up with him for his price, and if he can, he could be a cheaper alternative providing decent value. Looks more captaincy material than Jesus already, imo.

If keeping for long term, Bertrand would be better

For short term, one of Yoshida/Stephens will do the job

Sooooooo excited for today's match! Even though last minute switch to La(c)a didn't go through I'm still hoping for a great performance and of course lots of points 😎
Waiting for Kola to repay the faith too.

I have Bellerin and Firmino, so not sure what to wish for 🙂 Btw, can you see Bellerin benched, and Ox and Kola playing wing backs? Or is Bellerin prefered to Ox?

Yes, I said it a few days ago. I have a feeling Bellerin will be dropped for this one and Kola will finally play as LWB. If it doesn't happen again, I don't know what Wenger is smoking.

        Give me ...

        Cech
        Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
        Ox Ramsey Xhaka Kolašinac
        Özil Sánchez
        Lacazette

        ... and I'm happy.

Current weak points in the team: Fraser and gross (both 5.5). 0.5 itb and 2 FT

Best replacements for the price? Richarlison for one? Or maybe downgrade one to a 4.5 and get the likes of Ramsey or other 7 mil?

Carroll and Ramsey for me. Carroll is a £5.0m mid valued at £4.5m = bargain. Will get 100pts+ if he stays fit.

Will both play? If one is benched I would go Cork / Carroll / Calobah + Ramsey

Currently rotating for third mid spot so only play one(5-3-2 team going pretty well so far). Already have Carrol so would be bench fodder too. I'll see how Ramsey goes today cheers

Yeah I will delay as long as possible but price drop of Fraser might force my hand

Just used the wc yesterday and I successfully escape from KDB's price drop.
    Now it looks like this:

    Lossl (Elliot)
    Bailly Hegazi Bertrand (Schindler Mbemba)
    Mane Eriksen Pogba Jese (Carroll)
    Lukaku Rooney Mounie

    4.1 in the bank.
I know my team is strange atm but i am trying to get players who may have the chance to get 0.2 rise during int. break
And then I could have 0.1 more to use before next gameweek

What should I do with my team when GW4 is near in September?

is that 0.1 worth a weaker team for the next gameweek?

Well.. two weeks and several fixtures to wait with no transfers is not a good place to be

Possible replacement for Britos. My current squad:

    Foster, Lossl
    Davies, Jones, Hegazi, Fernandez, Britos**
    Eriksen, Mane, Mkhi, Richarlison, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Calvert-Lewin

    My options:
    (a) Mee (b) Clark (c) Suttner (d) Schindler (e) Naughton

I excluded Mbemba as not nailed. Thanks.

0.1m price drop on Ritchie is a bit harsh given how he played yesterday.

Anyone reckon it'll go back up to 6m in short order?

      For getting 6 points? Nope

I'm gutted it happened and feel it's unfair too (particularly annoyed since I own him haha) but I doubt he'd go back up unless Jese gets a red card or injury or something. Too much competition in that price bracket for lots of people to go back onto him
