The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

With Hazard coming back soon, how do you see the CHELSEA midfields lineup shape?
    Baka -Kante - Hazard

    Cesc? Pedro? Willian?

      Baka (Cesc) - Kante
      Hazard - Pedro (Willian)
      Morata

Pedro preferred over Willian from what we've seen last season, but it's close, think Willian could start ahead of Pedro a bit more often this season.

Id rater have Kane - Morata with a 352/442 like yours.

But with Alli and Eriksen you will still get a lot of the Spurs points so I understand your decision.

WC? This team? With two FT? No way.

Cash in KDB for any mid that you fancy and use the change to beef up defense. Kola to Alonso could work well, for example. The rest of your mids and forwards are very good - I really fancy Mounie to outscore his price by some distance.

So what's the latest on Pogba vs. Mkhi?

First Manchester United game I have seen this year - Mkhi looked poor and Pogba looked great. Mkhi still got an assist and created four chances. I wanted Mkhi before the season started and before this GW, but bottled it. Now I'm not so sure anymore, but definitely getting one of them this GW. Thoughts?

Agreed. It's like Alli and Eriksen last year. The longer you take to pick one, the more it becomes obvious that "both" was the correct answer.

Alonso - Yoshida- Ward -( Naughton - Mbemba)

5-2-3...Thoughts on my team heading into the next round. Don't want to use another trade (-4 currently) so can have Carroll substitute in case Danilo is to not score. Then can trade him the following week when there is a greater candidate around the 5.5 price range ie. Trippier or safer with Bertrand.

I'm really stumped over this. We paid good money for him last season, he's a good defender with plenty potential and still young. We need another CB as it is, and now we are selling Mustafi?

I'll be shocked if he actually leaves and we don't sign a top CB as a replacement, like Van Dijk. Even then I'd still be disgusted that we let Mustafi go.

First Post (Don't Play or Watch Live Football, Coerced by Colleagues into Participating...but actually finding it quite fun)!

I think Arsenal will beat Bournemouth so tempted to swap Capoue for Xhaka...should I be concerned about the GW3 yellow card for a medium term hold? Alternatively get rid of Adam Smith who I have on the sub list...

I have two Stoke players on my sub (Pieter and Shaqiri) should I transfer one out for balance and assuming Man U will destroy them...

Assume I should put a pin on the above as many folks could get injuries over the fortnight/ international break...

You give us a number of valid moves, but...

What you need to do first is wrap your head around the fact that you only get one free transfer per week. I would guess that most of us would like to change about five or six players every gameweek, but we need to be patient and pace ourselves. For example, your idea of Capoue to Xhaka is at best a very low priority move. Try to think of moves that would make sense not just for one week, but that would give additional returns for 4-5 gameweeks at least.

      Oh, and welcome!

Got two options which one would you choose for a -4 hit?

    A) KDB & Mounie > Hazard & Okazaki

    B) Wijnaldum & Mounie > Mkhi & Crouch

Team lineup currently looks like this:

    Foster
    Alonso Jones Mee Naughton
    Davis KDB Mane
    Aguero (C) Kane (VC) Mounie

Subs: Elliot, Wijnaldum, Carroll & Hunimeier

I'll see about that yes I'd love to double on LIV midfield/attack personally

Any advice for a Sanchez owner?

Assuming he stays, I always like to take a punt on my WC and them fixtures do look great. Currently, on paper, my best captaincy option.

Salah my likely replacement if I ship. Easy to forget Sanchez was top fpl scorer last year

Sorry, I see the differential appeal but salah looks hot now

Cheers for the input. So you guys suggest I eat my hat and get Salah in?

I think salah offers more value for now but I'd wait unless you on wildcard and can switch back of needed as salah will likely rise and no chance of Sanchez rising

After 2 consecutive poor weeks, I've play the W/C.

    Is this a good team?

    Fabianski
    Davies/Yoshida/Alonso
    Mooy/Pogba/Mane/Atsu/Eriksen
    Fermino/Lukaku

    (Myhill,Naughton,Godson,Ch'rito)

      Looks ok.
Make Atsu to a 4.5, play 3 up front, make Yousida into Bertrand?

Thanks 🙂 I will play 3 up front. That wasn't my proposed formation.

It's been a frustrating start to the season till now!
129 points not even avg of 50 points.
Lagging behind by 40+ points in all my Cash MLs.

Kane has really let me down. People who don't own him and have spread the money have breezed past me.

With double Soton defence, Kane, Kaku, Eriksen, Salah & Mkhi I don't think I need to wildcard also.

One casual is 25 points ahead of me and he actually benched Salah for a 5 man defence because he thought Otamendi & Dawson will score more than him!!

I'm a few points less. You have a cracking core set of players.

I'm just pleased I moved up a place to 19th in my works league. Just going to aim for a spot at a time after a truly awful start.

Getting plenty of stick as I nailed it last season with a top 500 finish. I'm happy just setting short goals to climb the league
