Moving Target

Moving Target – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Liverpool completed one of the more eye-catching signings of deadline day with the addition of Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for an undisclosed fee, understood to be worth £35 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Anfield, with his desire to play in central midfield thought to have been a key factor in his decision.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to be drawn on on where he plans to use the England international, however:

“I hear a lot of talk about positions but let’s talk about the player; he is someone with really good abilities who always gives everything for his team. A player that is positive and willing to take risks to try and make positive things happen.”

The History

Oxlade-Chamberlain linked up with Southampton’s academy at the age of seven and progressed to make his professional debut against Huddersfield Town in March 2010.

He made 43 appearances for Saints in all competitions, totalling 10 goals and nine assists, before joining Arsenal in August 2011 in a deal worth up to £15 million, including add-ons.

But a combination of injuries and a lack of consistency meant Oxlade-Chamberlain never managed to play more than 1,600 minutes in any single Premier League season.

He was part of the squad that won three FA Cups and played in a number of different positions, although he was primarily used as a right-sided midfielder.

During his six-year spell with the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain registered 20 goals and 32 assists in 198 matches in all competitions.

Capped by England at U18, U19 and U21 levels, making a total of 12 appearances, Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed his senior debut against Norway in May 2012.

He has made 27 appearances for the national team, producing six goals and five assists.

The Prospects

Oxlade-Chamberlain may, at some point, provide back-up Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the wide forward positions, although it’s clear the 24-year-old sees himself operating in central midfield.

His chances of cementing a regular starting role look vital to his Fantasy potential but, as we know, Klopp is currently blessed with plenty of options.

Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum have all enjoyed strong starts to the season, while Barcelona’s failure to prise away Philippe Coutinho from Merseyside leaves the influential Brazilian in the mix at Anfield.

The signing of Salah is expected to see Coutinho shifted into midfield, operating in an inside-left position in Klopp’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Adam Lallana, meanwhile, should return from a thigh injury in mid-October, while James Milner is being viewed as a central midfielder this season, with Alberto Moreno and Andrew Robertson vying for the left-back berth.

So while Oxlade-Chamberlain should shake off his recent wing-back role at Arsenal to battle for a midfield berth, he is surely set to be part of a continuous rotation policy.

Klopp demonstrated during the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 that he will look to shuffle the pack around UEFA Champions League matches. That is a big concern with the group stages getting underway between Gameweeks 4 and 5.

Last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed his best return in terms of assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), producing a total of seven.

He averaged a key pass every 48.84 minutes, which bettered both Wijnaldum (69.26) and Emre Can (71.76).

Those numbers suggest that he could provide Liverpool with improved creativity from central areas, although it’s difficult to read too much into the underlying statistics given that he played in such a variety of positions for Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has never been a major goalscoring threat.

He is yet to score more than two goals in any single Premier League campaign and only averaged a shot every 55.82 minutes last season. In contrast, Wijnaldum and Emre Can recorded six and five goals respectively.

Only Manchester United (10) have scored more than Liverpool (eight) so far in 2017/18, while Klopp’s side lead the way for shots from inside the penalty area, with 39.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has the energy and thrust required for a box-to-box role and, if afforded the freedom to push forward, his potential for attacking returns should be enhanced.

But with just nine goals and 19 assists over the past six seasons, he has a lot to prove as an attractive Fantasy option.

With the added rotation concerns, and the fact Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino are all in red-hot form, there appears little temptation to risk investment at this time.

Indeed, the upcoming fixtures (mci BUR lei new MUN tot) appear to give us time to assess the situation. Although, as Liverpool proved in the 4-0 win over Arsenal, Klopp’s side can defy the schedule to register goals against any opponent.

Ironically, Thursday’s move may have a greater short-term impact back at Arsenal.

Certainly, the prospects of defenders Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac seem improved without Oxlade-Chamberlain providing competition in the wing-back roles.

Bellerin now appears to have little or no threat for his start, while only Nacho Monreal – who has been playing more as a central defender since Arsene Wenger switched to a three-man defence – offers competition to Kolasinac on the left.

As for Oxlade-Chamberlain, his price tag of just 6.0 in FPL (8.9 in Sky Sports) may eventually see him emerge as a consideration. But at present, our three Liverpool slots should perhaps be reserved for their buoyant front three.

We should also have one eye on a Klopp defensive option given their recent record of seven clean sheets from the last nine Premier League Gameweeks.

Oxlade-Chamberlain got the move he desired but, in Fantasy terms, we remain cautiously optimistic on its impact on our season.

Is Can a viable option for the 4th mid spot ? I think he is. I can easily see him beat Atsu, Mooy & co.

I think there are better options at 4.5 than Mee right now. Why not Mbemba instead of Mariappa ?

I like the midfield a lot but with what formation will you play ?

As a Swans fan I have no idea what the dynamics of our midfield will be.

Sanches will start, Fer adds height and will start, Mesa/Britton the best option as the holding mid, after that you have Carroll, Ki, Routledge, Narsingh, Cluclas etc. all fighting for one place - unless Clement plays 3 centre backs then thst place is lost in midfield

I think he will, Clement played Routledge to the dismay of fans last season when wingers were available and is playing Ayew now.

I see Tammy and Ayew continuing and even Bony and Ayew being the next option ... Clement likes the hard working second striker that doubles up to give width too - don't see that at all in a Tammy / Bony combo

Has the pre-planned GW4 WC turned in to 'fools gold' ? There used to be an argument that PL team selection by now has settled down and you can shuffle you FPL team with your WC to nail the early season form players whilst also make a tidy profit during the two week International break.

However the late transfer window deals make squad selection akin to GW1 and double digit price rises are few and far between

You WC when you desperately need to, but most teams being wild carded are really not that bad and a -4 or -8 puts most things right ... surely we should wait until we really really need to pull the WC trigger rather than chase the GW4 'fools gold' ?

Seems that way so far ... a few injuries to key players might change things though. I'm not keen to spend -8 with a wildcard in my pocket though. Thing is Mark knows what he's doing but still, I'd really like his views and also to ask him now would he put the wild card back in his pocket if he could with captain hindsight.

What's changed? Kane didn't drop as expected?
Still getting rid of KDB, Dann, Fraser, probably Foster, Long, one of Kane/Lukaku, getting a Spurs mids in. Sounds like a good time to use a WC.

I think maybe the lack of drops...thought he'd be on a -0.5 by now. They could still drop of course .. and the lack of price increases. Also at the risk of tempting fate the lack of injuries and any clarity in the squads and transfers ... it just seems more confused than ever, especially with players coming off a break and champions league footy on the horizon

Getting rid of proven goalscorers like Kane/Lukaku screams kneejerk to me early on TM. He would have already benched Dann in his 3-4-3 so I don't think that's an issue. Long/Foster are just luxury transfers to make. Just a single hit to get rid of KdB and Fraser would have done the trick. Looks like a waste of a WC to me. 🙁

Yeah, I watched the show. I have no doubts that his team will improve but I think there will be GW's later on in the season where he'll need it more. The fact that it worked at this point last season doesn't necessarily mean that this is the best time to use it this season too, it's when his team needs it - which going by the fact that his team needed just one hit to be fixed is pretty hard to digest.

Carrying Jones and Dann could have been an issue.
If I had his team, I may have WC'ed too. Daniels and Ritchie having a good GW pretty much stopped me from WCing. He isn't scared to take hits later on whereas hits now still might have given him a weak GW4 team after pressers.

I agree Dann was an issue but not one he had to address immediately. Jones was an issue? The guy has kept 3 clean sheets in a row and is suspended for the UCL, he is nailed for the next 3/4 GW's at least. I understand the fact that he wanted to get Firmino before his price got out of hand but Kane, Lukaku and Abraham is a perfectly fine frontline for the time being as well.

Jones is playing with an injury and Mark has potentially got rid in the 8 changes he made on the show. He doubled up on United mids to cope with no Lukaku. I'm sure he will pop up soon to answer these questions.

Fair enough TM. It's just that I think 9 out his 11 starters this week (apart from KdB/Fraser who needed surgery) had the potential of scoring well. There are always going to be weeks where you can feel you can improve your team here or there by wildcarding. But one as a FPL manager has got to accept that you can't have them all - it's good to make luxury transfers on a WC but it's far more optimal to wait for the time when far more important issues in the team will need to be addressed.

Lukaku/Kane to Firmino is at best a sideways move, more likely a downgrade with the upcoming fixtures.

If he spreads the funds that Firmino saves up, it's probably even worse when he inevitably wants to bring them back in as it will require at least one hit.

Agreed. He only needed to do KDB and Fraser out for a hit.

His wildcard was motivated by team value, nothing else. I think if he had known Kane would drop this slowly, he wouldn't have done it.

Lots of hot topics on this already. Agree with you that there are still too many variables such as Haz, Sanchez, Couthino, Everton fixtures...along with no big price rises seems to have not quite worked. Still a week to go though and a lot could change. An injury to someone in the internationals for example.

Yet many were banking on buying Kane back at 12.3 etc whilst pocketing big rises elsewhere ? This was the strategy that tipped the balance to WC, and it simply hasn't come to fruition.

The transfers that happened on deadline day will make little or no difference to the key fantasy assets people will be looking to bring in right now.

The biggest one was Chamberlain, it's debatable if he even starts.

Anyone who's wildcarding this week will have a decent enough idea what they have to work with, the only advantage of going slightly later is to catch any fixture swings but that can also be managed with two frees and a -4 or -8.

Not sure why it has to be a competition of who is right for going in which window, use it when you feel you can make enough changes as it's not getting the full value of it if you don't use it for an overhaul.

Not sure I agree with the first part - Swansea is a classic example with doubts over the game time for the two 'enablers' Carroll and Abrahams. Same for Spurs at right back, Chelsea's 3 at the back, Liverpool and Arsenal midfield with Coutinho and Sanchez staying etc. etc. ...

I think you're massively overpaying it.

Most can see that Trippier is a no go, Moses likely to be the same and Naughton is pretty much secure, if you're looking to punt an a out of shape/match fit Bony then you shouldn't be allowed to make Transfer a without supervision anyway.

Liverpool's mid hasn't really changed other than adding potential cover and if you're looking at Sanchez with all that has happened this week then good luck, you'll need it at that price and with his head and team looking wobbly.

Not really... the WC has to be used before GW19 anyways with another one for the second half of the year DGW's, and a Free Hit Chip for sorting out the fallout from fixture reshuffling etc.

I'd personally rather take a WC than an 8 point hit, there is enough information now to plan for the next 6 weeks or so & fix up any planning errors from pre-season

Still a lot of unanswered questions for me. Anyone got any answers?

        1. But then you haven't seen Haz, Sanchez, Coutinho play yet and how they impact the team.
        2. Also how will Siggy, Jags, Rooney do at Everton?
        3. How will Arsenal react to their thrashing?
        4. Will Kola play WB now?
        5. Will Salah always be rotated?
        6. Is RLC a viable 4.5 mid?
        7. Who is the safest City asset? Seems to be Silva so far

This will continue throughout the year though. There will always be unanswered questions & teams will change personnel & formations & systems as the year goes on. I don't think there will be a GW where we can step back & say that's it, all questions answered, time to WC 🙂

GW3, GW7 & GW11 look the 3x options as all coincide with international breaks, just a case of picking one

I think the problem at the moment is the extent of these potential unknowns. I look at my team and think a lot of my players could kick on and do well throughout the season...class is permanent and form is temporary

Mane, Fimino and Salah eliminate the need for Coutinho this year, not sure why you'd miss out on those right now for him.

Everton still have tough fixtures, not sure why they are even on the radar yet.

Alonso and Morata make Hazard quite the luxury unless you're planning on captaining him weekly.

Kola could play at WB but is that enough of a carrot when you rely on the shambolic Arsenal defence to really extract his value?

No City asset is safe, time won't make that better, it'll make it worse when the CL starts.

4.5 mids won't leave your bench, pick one and don't build your team around it.

The rotating 4.5 mid seems to be a popular tactic with WCers. Carroll/Chalobah/RLC along with a 4.5 defender to allow a switch to 4-3-3. What are people's opinion on this tactic? RLC was looking good before his injury and could match say an Atsu (5) or Brady (5.5)? Are we not playing our 4.5 mids simply because they are too cheap?

Chalobah's stats in members area are v impressive - he's the pick of that bunch (Carroll, Atsu, RLC, Chalobah's)... even when normalising for RLC's 2 starts vs. The rests 3 starts

I'm really surprised that more are not taking advantage of the 5 man defence to get more out of their budgets.

Alonso, Jones, Davies, Cedric and Hegazi in a unit can match any five man midfield for value, two 4.5 mids allows a lot of money to be put in the more vital players, means you don't have to gamble on unreliables like Ritchie and Atsu.

The 4.5 mids never need to leave the bench.

I think you do a good 4 man defence of say:

        Jones, Davies, Cedric, Naughton
        Eriksen, Pogba, Salah
        Morata, Kane, Firm

        Chalobah, Carroll, Dunk/Mbema

          • 6 Years

Looks very similar to what I've gone with but where you have Firmino, I have Alonso (with Lukaku instead of Morata) personally think it climates the need to risk on attackers in key areas.

          I've gone

          Foster
          Alonso, Davies, Jones, Cedric, Hegazi
          Eriksen, Mikhitaryan, Salah
          Kane, Lukaku

          Subs. Elliot, Carroll, RLC, Hemed.

Looks like a 532 but the plus of Alonso is it makes it a 442 with Hegazi the weakest link (but with nice fixtures)

Think it gets the most out of the budget rather than punting on a inconsistent 3rd and 4th mid or a cheap 3rd striker who's hot and cold.

It's an interesting point, one I was considering starting the year with a back 5... but the problem is that defenders like Mee & Naughton (along with Hegazi & Jones as you mention above) look set to keep pace with elite defenders for the next few weeks with their good fixtures... who are much cheaper than their 5.5, 6.0 & 7.0 peers... which in turn frees up more £ for an attacking 7 of either 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

Krul & Elliott look like further enhancing this now as a playing GK combo for a quite frankly ridiculous 8.0

Hi Dacra, i would say the later the better so we have more data to use for our WC, but in the end when your team needs it it needs it and you try to get the best result out of it. As an example for my own team i am looking to use mine as late as possible, but if my team i ok and still get great points together then i will decide to use it even later. there is no right or wrong here the good part of using it later rather earlier is the amount of data on hand.Hope that this will help. 🙂

Not today or this week. Just generally.

Lukaku is nowhere near a drop and his ownership is pretty stable at present so he should be fine this week. However, based on previous experience, if the market turns against Lukaku he could experience a couple of fairly quick drops.

It looks to me like the higher the ownership is the more impossible it is for the price to drop

not usually....but i think the algorithm has been adjusted this year, kane not dropping has been very surprising

The price drop threshold at starting price is a percentage of overall ownership, so you need more raw transfers out if you're a high ownership player to suffer a drop.

    Mane or Salah?

I got Mane, more chance of scoring from nothing / fewer chances.

I have Mane from Wk 1 but would get Salah now simply because of price....both will match each other

I seem to forget the answer to this question every year.. so here it goes again

I've already got a -4 point hit this week, If I activate my WC now do I still get -4pts ?

    1. Dacra
      • 9 Years

      No.

    2. Diva

Nope, activating the wildcard wipes out hits accrued in that gameweek.

i would attack miliojevic and KDB both of them playing quit deep, and you would need attacking mids to get points out of them.I would go with the likes of Alli and atsu for an example the more attacking the better.

hello all, do people think PVA will get dropped? I want to transfer him out, but have other fires to put out, and bur away isn't the worst fixture if he starts....

I wouldn't think so BobBradleysOpportunity but just in case watch out for pressers etc closer to the dead line...P.S any fires to be attacked just do them i when you know more about the PVA issue.

Already taken a -4 to do KDB & JWP to Eriksen & Jese prior to their drops.

    Currently got a squad of:

    Foster, Fabianski
    Cedric, Danilo, Trippier, Mee, Hunemeier
    Eriksen, Pogba, Jese, Mooy, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

Given doubts over Trippier. Danilo, Mooy...and the fact Hunemeier isn't even playing, I'm strongly tempted to wildcard to:

    Elliott, Krul
    Alonso, Jones, Cedric, Naughton, Mee
    Eriksen, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Chalovah, RLC
    Kane, Morata, Firmino

Reckon it's worth pulling the trigger, and if so which is more nailed - Naughton & Elliott or Fabianski & Mbemba?

Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

      A for me.

really ? Abraham good home fixtures coming up and surely alonso gonna outscore jones

I think Chicharito will outscore Abraham more than Alonso will outscore Jones.

I am contemplating Chicharito captain though, so I'm clearly insane.
