The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 4

Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can't wait for the Scoutcast this week. Mark to get slaughtered i'm guessing?

Mark - I am in your camp. I wildcarded and it cost me some immediate points. I even done the same Lacazette gamble thinking a Kane blank would result in another price drop. Long term I'm sure things can work out.

Most disasterous wild card of my life

      Took mane over Salah
      Took Eriksen over Alli
Took out Kane and Jesus for Lukaku and Firmino
With Jones, Cedric and Alonso getting 4 points between them I am just distraught with it all

Similar for me. I didn't really realise how bad it was until I looked back at my team the week before. I took out De Bruyne, Kane and Jesus on mine. Brought in the likes of Alli, Firmino and Lacazette. Most weeks if I don't touch my team I would score more points 🙂

Your only problem with having no Lukaku is he is so well owned and so well captained overall. When he does (and I think he will) get a haul every now and then it will hurt a lot.

Whereas Haz will only be 0.3 more expensive than Morata in the next day or two & also has pens. Just a shame can't fit Morata in as he looks a great pick

I must be the only one who sold Ben Davies on Friday night?

He was dropped to free cash up for Firmino, I was thinking he won't do anything amazing against Everton! Now he's the must have defender.

Imo Davies might be ahead of Rose atm even if both are fit. If Davies is playing as he is atm there is no reason to drop him specially if you think what kind of comments Rose gave before the season opener. Those comments were maybe not that bad but if you have two players to choose from you might want to pick the one who is more committed to the team.

b with Carrol or RLC, although it leaves your mid not that strong unless you get a god rotation with those cheap 3 (Mooy becomes your 3rd Mid effectively)

I shipped Davies before his haul to get Firmino in up top (with Kane and Lukaku). Although 7M I can't get rid of Alonso, he's effectively a Chelsea Mid.

Keep alonso. U need to rid of eriksen if ur gonna bring in kane. Also pogba lukaku is an overkill on utd. Work on getting some city and arsenal cover for the long run. 4.5 4th mid is most likely to restrict your formation options a lot

Seen lots of posts already about how "essential" Kane and Lukaku are but for me the most essential striker on here is Jesus (or Aguero, were he to get injured)

Why? Very simply, because there isn't a midfielder who is going to cover his points like in the other teams.

    Eriksen/Alli + 3m will cover Kane
Pogba + 3.5m will cover Lukaku

Arsenal are a bit more random, but I would argue both Morata and Lac if he's nailed are better options and I think Firmino looks nailed on as the 3rd striker given he's actually cheaper than the midfielders

    So you can have

Kane, Lukaku, Firmino and a midfield costing roughly 32m

or you can upgrade the midfield by 2m and have Jesus for Kane

or 3m and have Jesus, Morata, Firmino

that is the difference between your 3rd mid being Aaron Ramsey or Eriksen/Salah

or playing 4 3 3 with an absolute quality back line

Plus, City will score more goals than both Spurs and United. Absolute, cast iron, fact.

captains? don't get me started on that front... anyone who captained Jesus this week is laughing their head off

Kane yeah, I do agree on that front. But the way United are playing I honestly think Pogba, who will never get dropped plus 3.5m!? is a better option than Lukaku

Morata is actually 10. Even better.

For the record I should state that I currently have Kane, Lukaku and Firmino. But I won't be on my week 7 wildcard and want to see which midfielders stand out as the best options to cover them.

I was unsure about Morata but he looks absolute class.

No way is this season over in terms of choice. And all of us who took Kevin/Aguero out this week for Pool/United mids have learnt our lesson

This was discussed on the Scoutcast last week. It's a sound argument if you take out captaincy, which I know you mentioned last. But take Spurs for example, would you trust your captaincy on Alli or Eriksen?

        yes

        I'll never understand this point

in a good fixture Eriksen can easily score one, assist one and get a massive haul

I guess that's the difference. I don't trust Alli or Eriksen to cover a Kane haul. Yesterday was a good example of why this doesn't quite work in reality. Alli and Eriksen just didn't match Kane.

Also, Pogba didn't quite match Lukaku. I honestly think it's one of those that looks good on paper but in reality it doesn't quite work. You would have to get your midfield captain picks so spot on. I do agree with you about Jesus though. He is the standout Man City option for me.

Not sure Pogba covers Lukaku (even with 3M). Mou will reign his horses in as the season progresses and play the points game.

I'd say Rashford could be better cover at less cost (if he stays with 2 up top)

Exact point I was gonna not to make... Alli & Eriksen do not cover Kane. Mkhi does not cover Lukaku. No one covers anyone. I think Kane, Kaku, Firmino, Haz is the way to go - 4x pen takers & focal points of attacks. Then just try to accommodate one of Eriksen, Alli, Mkhi, Pogba, Mané, Salah, Morata alongside them imo, which one isn't particularly important, although Pog/Mkhi allows for a better defence vs. The 9.5's & 10.0's 🙂

they don't cover them on their own, I didn't say that

But over a ten game run Eriksen and Salah say will likely score just as many points as Kane plus a 6.5/ 7m mid

This is why I went with Jesus over Lukaku at the start of the season.
      I got punished.

So I took out Jesus for Lukaku.
      I got punished.

So I took Kane out for Firmino, and Ritchie for Alli
      I got punished.

Oh and went Mane over Salah too.
      I got punished.

I'm getting trolled by this whole F*****G season
      Not happy.

Good point,I had jesus as captain..my only regret selling kdb for alli, but was essential to get spurs cover as I have lukaku firmino and jesus up front..kun aguero was on fire yesterday,he could have easy scored hat trick...

    Would you do:
    A) Mane + Chicharito > Groß/Brady + Jesus
    B) Cedric, Mane, Chicharito > Mee/Lowe, Sigurdsson, Vardy (-4)

        Not quite, mi amigo

Kane now is a must and will captain the next 4. Stats and eye test. Don't have him and be left behind rank wise
Jesus is 10.4 and won't captain so a lot of funds. Less chance of playing 90 mins
It could be Lukaku but his ownership % is dangerous

        Think!

fair enough but right now im seeing you remove a player who scored two for another who scored two and are willing to take a hit in the process. (and you cant deny spurs form at wembley is an issue, because it clearly is)

    Decided to WC GW8 instead.

Planning to transfer out Morata and Redmond and bring in Kane (C) and Chalobah

    0.0 ITB
Use of 1FT with Minus 4 Hit

Most remaining squad are playing at Home so will leave as-is.

Given there is 0.0 ITB should I change now in case of price movements or risk till next Friday in case any injuries picked up...

Salah looked dangerous before the Mane sending off, his final touch let him down though.

Didn't see the Utd game, what was Mkhi like?
