Scout Notes – Gameweek 5 – Sunday

Another big win for Manchester United flatters to deceive as Romelu Lukaku produces a double-figure haul that still may not be enough to halt sales of the Belgian.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea and Arsenal play out a goalless draw which saw David Luiz become the next Chelsea defender to see red to cause a headache for his sizeable ownership.

Here are the notes from Gameweek 5’s final fixtures.

Lukaku’s late show fails to halt sales

When Antonio Valencia crashed the ball into the Everton net four minutes into the match, a 4-0 result looked like the least Man United could expect from their day’s work.

By the end of an often lethargic showing, three late goals put a decidedly flattering gloss on the exact same outcome.

Romelu Lukaku was wasteful until the final flurry in which he scored once – his fifth goal in as many league matches this season – and set up the equally disappointing Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the midfielder’s first strike of the campaign.

Lukaku’s 12-point haul could and should have been doubled. He missed a big chance in the first half having been put through by Juan Mata, and then seemingly surrendered penalty duties to Anthony Martial for United’s fourth goal.

Indeed, post-match, Jose Mourinho provided some insight on that situation – indicating that Lukaku may well have relinquished duties from this point on.

“The penalty-taker today was Juan Mata, but he was out, so I let the players take the decision.”

That may compound matters for Lukaku, who, despite today’s 12-points, continues to see his ownership dwindle.

Over 51,000 managers have already sold him ahead of Gameweek 6 and, having been part of 60% of squads, he is now down to 55.6%, having suffered close to 108,000 sales going into Friday’s deadline.

That still means a majority of managers remain happy with the returns on his 11.7 price tag, though there is a feeling that the Belgian is closer to a barren run than a bonanza.

He led the way with four attempts today, but Jesse Lingard‘s 29-minute cameo produced more penalty area touches (6) than Lukaku’s five, with the substitute’s flick also setting up the forward’s goal.

United’s fixtures are on the cusp of stiffening. A Gameweek 6 trip to a defensively organised Southampton will be tough, although a visit from Crystal Palace a week later should prove rather more fruitful.

After the October international break, however, United will travel to Liverpool and Chelsea and entertain Spurs in what could be a treacherous four-Gameweek spell.

Sergio Aguero‘s 20-point burst at Watford, allied to a long run of good fixtures to come for Man City, has reminded us all that the Argentinian is Fantasy royalty.

More than 216,000 have now bought him since yesterday’s hat-trick, with Roberto Firmino (39000+) and Lukaku (37,000+) the main fall guys.

Mkhitaryan, who tops the FPL midfielder standings after his nine-points against the Toffees, remains a far more popular target than his team-mate, aided by the injury to Paul Pogba.

The Armenian is already the fifth most-bought player for Gameweek 6, with the majority (as happened ahead of Gameweek 5) swapping him in for Pogba.

And United assets at the back are still delivering good returns, with Phil Jones (5.1) unlucky not to sweep up bonus points – his baseline of 17 was easily the strongest in the Red Devils’ defence – with only Valencia’s goal scuppering the chances of extra points.

As for Everton, their horrifically tough start to the season is now at an end, and it’s come at a heavy price.

The side have been winless since a narrow Gameweek 1 victory over Stoke City, and they’ve lost three straight in the league, conceding ever more goals as they’ve gone.

Confidence is low, and their attack is toothless – only Swansea City have managed fewer attempts than the Toffees’ 42 (Spurs lead the way with 105).

At 4.3, right back/wing-back Cuco Martina could be a bargain now that Everton’s schedule takes a turn for the better (BOU, BUR, bri). We’ll learn more as to his starting credentials when coach Ronald Koeman decides on his line-up for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Sunderland.

No goals, but points to be had

Arsenal visiting Chelsea and leaving with a point from a goalless draw was one of the more surprising results of the weekend.

It was great news for the 10.9% of managers who tempted fate by sticking by Sead Kolasinac, the muscular Bosnian recording a second consecutive clean sheet to keep him top of the Gunners’ defensive standings with 23 points.

His added attacking threat just about justifies the hefty 6.0 outlay he demands, and if Arsenal can continue to show the resilience on display at Stamford Bridge, he looks the most attractive route into an often untrustworthy backline.

The match was not a classic – Danny Welbeck led the way for goal attempts with a meagre three – and it was another case of wait and see when it came to the sides’ two big-ticket men Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard.

Both had to make do with appearances from the bench and the 11.9 required to secure Sanchez’s services looks too high a price to be pay until he’s starting and scoring regularly, even with an immediate schedule – WBA BHA wat – that promises much.

Hazard, at 10.5, is rather kinder on the wallet, and Chelsea’s fixtures are even better, a Gameweek 7 visit from a rampant Man City notwithstanding.

But coach Antonio Conte has made it clear he will not be rushing the Belgian back into action too quickly, and neither should we if he continues to be given limited pitch-time.

That Man City match will have to be endured without David Luiz as the 24.0%-owned Brazilian was given a straight red towards the end of today’s encounter.

The centre-half, an ever-present at the heart of the defence this season, will now miss two Gameweeks, with Antonio Rudiger his most likely replacement.

Luiz at least left it until he’d earned his owners a clean sheet. The 21.2%-owned Marcos Alonso was also in the points, but he was way off the bonus points with a BPS score of just 20 – only Luiz recorded a lower score among the Blues’ backline.

His 68% pass completion rate had much to do with that and the Spaniard’s net ownership is currently in decline, even though the 30 points he’s racked up makes him the highest-scoring Chelsea defender.

It would seem, however, that FPL managers expect extra from Alonso – like his two-goal, 16-point show stopper against Spurs, for instance.

For a price of 7.1, they may have a point, but Alonso is still producing consistent returns, and only five defenders have scored more points than him thus far.

One big-name player not producing so regularly is Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

His 11.5% ownership base has paid 10.4 for 17 points to date, but after scoring against Bournemouth last time out, he was subbed off on 66 minutes at Chelsea having mustered just a single shot on target – a big chance he failed to convert.

The competition for places in our forward lines is intense. Twelve strikers have scored more points than Lacazette, while just three of them cost more than the Frenchman.

His days of double-digit ownership look numbered.

    Should I do Firmino + Alonso > Aguero + 4.5 for -4?

    Would make a 4.5def/RLC/Obiang rotation.

    Elliott (Foster)
Kolasinac - Mendy - Alonso - Davies (Hunemeir)
Moting - Silva - Mkhi (RLC, Obiang)
    Firmino - Kane - Morata

Firmino + Alonso would be more reliable points than Aguero and a 4.5, your 4.5 pick would have to be perfect/lucky every week.

Punted on Coutinho, fully expecting him to play in the front 3 ahead of Sturridge til Mané's return...

Wanted to do Mounie, DDG, Eriksen --> Aguero, Fabianski, Grob for a hit but didn't realize Grob would rise

    DDG, Elliot
    Davies, Dawson, Yoshida, Mee, Long
    Eriksen, Mhiki, Salah, Atsu, Carroll
    Lukaku, Kane, Mounie

1 - Do same but get Brady
2 - Do same moves but get a 4M GK
3 - Wildcard and get Grob. Sort out other chaff
    4 - Kane --> Aguero

It looks like that because Man Utd is much better than we thought and lots of casuals plays triple United gaining points from Lukaku, De Gea Miki or Pogba... If you put armband on Lukaku before start of the season till now you wouldn't have to do much. Just wait and collect points.

Not usually a fan of taking hits, but think I can justify it to bring in Aguero as captain v CPL.

Thinking Morata and Salah/Coutinho (gutshot replacement for Pogba) to Aguero and Ramsay. Would leave me £0.9/0.6m ITB.

    A) is the hit worth it?
    B) keep Salah or Coutinho?

You convinced Aguero is going to score 3 against Crystal Palace huh?

Just like everyone was convinced Kane would bag a hattrick against Swansea right?

People have got to stay just a little more patient on here...

Every single week so far it's been a different player to get in. And how many of them have continued with back to back hauls???

Next week is CL as well, this week it's league cup fixtures.. For all we know, Pep rests Aguero for CL and Kane demolishes West Ham...

Thanks for your comment Krionos. It's not that I'm convinced he will score three, but he would immediately become the prime captaincy candidate (which is how I would justify taking a hit to bring him in. Lower returns needed to pay back). He would also be a pick for at least 8-10 weeks (another essential consideration when taking a hit, as it gives him longer to "pay it back", so to speak)

  14. Sticking with your strikers
    FantasyFootballSprout

I'm seeing a lot of comments about switching premium strikers and I can't help but think people are playing with fire. These strikers are not some average footballers; we're talking about some of the best goal scorers on the planet.

    Lukaku £11.7m
    Aguero £11.5m
    Morata £10.2m
    Firmino £8.7m
    Jesus £10.5m
    Lacazette £10.4m
    Kane £12.5m
    Vardy £8.5m

If you're getting rid of these players then stick with your decision for the long run. These players can punish you on any given day which makes it pointless trying to chase last weeks points. I did Lukaku to Kane last week and I was punished but that was because I wanted Kane for the long term. He has WHU, HUD and BOU in his next 3.

However if you're swapping out premium strikers each week, this tactic will never work because these players will just burn you. Any one of them can bag a brace when they're in the mood.

Even saw some comments saying if they should switch Jesus to Aguero. Points could easily be reversed next week and Aguero could be dropped for all we know. And btw, those saying Jesus is a rotation risk haven't looked at his starts. When he's been fit, he's started every game under Pep. He obviously loves him.

Anyway the lesson is: Be patient and stick with 2/3 premium strikers for at least 4/5 Gwks.

I hear you, but am going Firm to Jesus. It's a long term move, and I already have Salah. I was considering it even when people were flocking to Firmino and with Mane out he's not involved enough (I know it's only for another game). Needed a piece of that City pie!

      1. FantasyFootballSprout

If it's long term then no problem. Jesus will yield points long term more than Firmino. I just hate it when a premium striker blanks one week and then the sheep flock and chase the points of the previous weeks' big performer

Some contradictions here- took Lukaku out for Kane and got burned, but its fine because Kane has whu HUD and BOU in his next 3- which seems to imply that you are trying to play the fixtures with Kane.
Then you go onto say any of them can bag a brace when they're in the mood- which would seem to imply that you think the quality of the player overrides the fixture difficulty.

Re Jesus and Aguero- Jesus might not be rotation risk but he's not played a full game all season and hes been taken off before 65 mins 3 times.

Also I would disagree that Lazcazette, Vardy and Firmino belong in the same category as the rest of the strikers in terms of being some of the 'best goal scorers on the planet'

Other than that its all good 😛

      1. FantasyFootballSprout
        • 6 Years

Yeah but what I'm trying to say is I did it for a sustained period of time. Not just 1 GW. I believe Kane will outscore Lukaku in the next 3. However I didn't do it for just one week like some people are doing here. Otherwise I wouldnt have taken Lukaku out.

Jesus starts and gets points consistently. What's not to love. Couldn't care less if he gets hooked after 15 minutes of he's bagged a goal already.

Vardy is still a premium asset in the game IMO. Lacazette has a peach run of fixtures and is a potent goal scorer. Firmino is so unique in what he does on the pitch, not many other strikers can do what he does. Obviously tongue in cheek comment as well about best on the planet. 😉

Yep, I sold Jesus for Kane and that clearly didn't work out. It should do in the long term with Kane getting 90mins a game unlike Jesus who always gets subbed early. Still, one player is in form and the other...well, its debatable.

        Not entirely sure I agree....

With the template forming, flipping between the premium strikers at the right time could be key.

If I was convinced kun would start v palace is consider lukaku to kun and then reversing the transfer the next week with United play palace and city chelsea.

I'll wait and see city team sheet on weds before I do anything.

And of course with city playing palace, Europe and Chelsea in a week guess there could be a good deal of rotation v palace

I disagree. Mark did very well last season because he was aggressive, unsentimental towards players and switched between big hitters very quickly.

Yeah but considering they could all score a brace anytime - not necessarily with the best fixtures - it'such easier to get it wrong than right.

      This
Such a simple, common sense article, but you see it each week with the price trending. Retrospective buying will forever be a trend with this game.

I must be missing something, or you are. He's widely considered one of the best strikers ever in the premier league.

    This week’s line up:

    Elliot
    Alonso Jones Nuaghton Mbemba
    Alli Salah Mkhtaryan
    Lukaku {c} Morata Firmino

    (Woodman, Cedric, RLC, Woodburn)
    0.4 ITB

    Morata + Firmono > Aguero + Rooney (-4)?

MAJOR PLUS – is that this means I can armband Aguero for CPL at home….

Aguero has Chelsea away after Palace but then has Stoke at home and Burnley at home to follow (quite good)
Rooney has Bournemouth, Burnely and Brighton in next 3 (very good)
Firmino has Leicester away, Newcastle away, United home and Spurs away next 4 (quite bad)
Morata has Stoke away, City at home, but then Palace, Warford and Bournemouth following (quite nice)

Firmino will drop this week (and stop me making 0.1 on him) and Aguero will rise tonight

    Any thoughts on this move???

I’m doing terribly this season - all help welcome!!

If you're going cheap, I think it ought to be Joselu or Abraham. If you're going for an absolute non-player, Quaner will do.

    Which move?
    (A) Mounie to Abraham/Hernandez/Depoitre (other 7.3m forward)
    (B) Mounie and Alli to Vardy and Silva (-4)
    (C) Mounie and Davies to Vardy and Naughton (-4)
    (D) Save FT

RMT please!!! Using the WC this week.

    Forster (Elliot).

    Davies, Bertrand, Ward (TAA, Lascelles).

    Mkhi, Alli, Eriksen, Ritchie (Carroll).

    Lukaku, Mounie, Jesus.

Ward can obviously be swapped with TAA or Lascelles depending on fixtures. Not sold on Mounie but can't find an alternative.

    Thoughts?

Firm to Jesus for free this week?

Or downgrade one of Kola, Bavies, Mikky, Eriksen or Gros to free up the extra 1 mil for Aguero? (-4)

    Foster Elliott
    Kola Bavies Naughton Sutner Long
    Mikky Eriksen Atsu Gros TC
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    2 mil itb

    Salah - Mkhi - Ritchie - Groß - TC

    Kane - Kun - Rooney

    Foster, Elliot
    Jones, Naughton, Cedric, Maguire, Rosenior
    Alli, Salah, Mhki, Brady, Atsu
    Lukaku, Firmino, Morata.

    2FT, 0.4m
    A) Morata-> Jesus
    B) Firmino/Mhki -> Aguero/Gross
    C) Other?

Agonising over whether to hold tight or get in City cover. Current team:

    1FT £0.1m itb

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Bavies, Jones, Schindler, Mbemba
    Mhki, Eriksen, Richarlison, Carroll, RLC
    Lukaku, Kane, Firmino

    My mad option would be:
Firmino, Alonso, Eriksen >>> Jesus, Otamendi, Salah (-8)

    1) Do the mad option above (-8)
    2) Something with just the 1FT!?
    3) Stop worrying and stick with current team

    Cheers!

Some opinions on which of the following transfers is best?

    A) Chicharito > Rooney (Good fixtures) or Welbeck.
    B) Alli to Silva then the following week Jesus to Kane (C) then after GW7 Kaku to Aguero (C)
    C) Alli to Brady then Chicha to Aguero -4.
    D) Alli to KDB
    E) Alli to Silva and Dann to Mendy/Kolasinac -4. Then bench Chicha

    Team currently is

    Elliot (Foster)
    Davies Jones Mee (Dann Mariappa)
    Eriksen Mkhi Alli Ritchie (Carroll)
    Jesus (C) Kaku Chicha

Quite keen to get rid of a Spurs player as I don't want to play a triple up against the team I support this GW lol.

I've not changed my team since start of season except adding Carroll and Matic.

    Begin/Forster
    Cedric / Walker / Kolas / Manquillo / Naughton

    Mhik / KDB / Alli / Matic / Carroll

    Kun/ Firm / I'nacho

    I've got 100.00

Feel like I need to do SOMETHING even thought I scored 78 this week (captained Firm!!!)

    Any help?!?
