This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

Fantasy budgets are squeezed with premium defences on top and the inevitable names featuring in the Golden Boot race, but some genuine value options may just have emerged in the middle of the park. Here are my lessons learned from Gameweek 7.

Kane’s a September baby

Based on a pure comparison of Harry Kane’s underlying statistics from his first three league matches with his most recent three, you’d almost be forgiven for contemplating jettisoning the Spurs striker.

Twenty-four goal attempts have dwindled to a “meagre” 16, with only half as many shots in the box, although he has maintained his average of one big chance per game in each set of fixtures.

Of course, September Kane has outscored August Kane 11-0 in all competitions for Spurs and nobody could care less about lesser statistics when the bottom line is an in-form striker motoring towards his fourth consecutive 20-plus goal season.

Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Morata and, lest we forget, Roberto Firmino have all been dubbed “near essential” by sagacious sections of the Fantasy community at various points, including myself, but Kane undoubtedly ticks the form and fixtures boxes so comprehensively that even non-captaining owners find themselves needing a Wembley-sized sofa whenever Kane plays.

Away from home at least…

But our big-money striker plan is being torn up

Right up until last Thursday night, it seemed inevitable that we would have to juggle our squads to accommodate three big strikers at a cost of over a third of our Fantasy funds.

Three days later and we are deprived of both Aguero and Morata – in the short term at least – while Alexandre Lacazette has yet to record attacking points in back to back games.

Even Romelu Lukaku’s seven goals in seven matches are being regarded with scepticism in the face of a more challenging run of fixtures which could see Jose Mourinho’s tether his horses.

Ironically, were Aguero and Morata both to miss two matches, that would point to a neat short-term solution in Gabriel Jesus, whose curtailed minutes culminated in his spectator’s role in the Crystal Palace riot.

After all, Manchester City are averaging nearly four goals a match at home and it’s questionable whether their next pair of visitors, Stoke City and Burnley, can reduce that average significantly.

In the longer term, though, it will be fascinating to see whether we can resist the charms of three in-form heavy-hitting strikers, or whether we are can grit our teeth, steady the knees and remember that the true “value” (in terms of points per million) can still be found in midfield and, particularly, in defence.

Once, that is,  you have a decent captaincy option (spelt K-a-n-e).

So do try to keep it clean

Last week I noted that if current scoring trends continued, as many as eight players could exceed 20 goals this season, compared to just three last year.

This week, it is worth balancing that statistic with reference to the possible record-breaking defences.

Given the form of the top strikers, it may come as a surprise to learn that there have been almost twice as many clean sheets so far (55) compared to this stage last season (30).

It is, however, the usual suspects who feature highest on that list, with Huddersfield’s 4-0 defeat to Spurs warning us of their possible regression.

Manchester United’s rearguard has only been breached in one league match this season, while their City rivals have also only conceded two goals in seven games.

Arsenal were fortunate that their net only bulged four times against Liverpool in Gameweek 3, but have not conceded since.

Sead Kosalinac was overshadowed by his defensive team-mates Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal this week – having had both a potential assist and a header of his own cleared off the line – but a seven-point average score since Anfield provides more than a little comfort for his growing ownership.

Davies is peerless

The Manchester sides and Arsenal each provide defensive options in the sub-6.0 price bracket, but the current defensive king is found at the Gunners’ north London rivals, Spurs, in the form of Ben Davies.

The pain I (and 300,000 other FPL managers) felt becoming a new manager of Davies, just in time for his benching in Gameweek 5, has been replaced by the euphoria of owning the highest-scoring asset of Gameweek 7 (along with Marouane Fellani) – a fairly novel emotion so far this season for me, it must be said.

A quick look at the statistics shows that Davies’ success was no fluke.

Joint top for shots on target over the season (four) with Fantasy darling Marcos Alonso, and having created more chances (16) than any other player – the same tally as team-mate Christian Eriksen – Davies is surely in the driving seat to retain his starting position despite the possible return of Danny Rose in the near future.

Certainly, the Welshman’s owners will hope that Danny Rose forgets all about the World Cup and that Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t follow Mourinho’s unexpected lead of giving Eric Bailly a breather in the “gimme” games.

Some 18% of the FPL world suffered the pain of the Portuguese’s whims when the Ivorian centre-back was surprisingly rested against Palace, with week-long doubt Phil Jones completing the 90 minutes on his way to an easy six points.

Pep still has us worried. This is no time to start playing with our heads, Jose.

There’s some consistency from the budget midfielders

Recommending to you premium defenders and top-dollar attackers is, naturally, rather easy if only we had the benefit of operating with an unlimited budget.

True, there is merit in an 8.0 goalkeeper double act, but that 0.5m saving really doesn’t stretch as far as we would like.

Instead, if we’re searching for a couple of sub-6.5 players, the value seems very much to lie in midfield at the moment, with Abdoulaye Doucouré (5.3), Richarlison (6.1) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (5.6) all showing their potential, to a greater or lesser extent, in Gameweek 7.

In particular, Richarlison and Choupo-Moting (both with 18), trail only Mohamed Salah (21) for midfielder shots in the box and, as anyone who owns Newcastle striker Joselu knows, eventually one of those efforts is bound to go in – even if you need Joel Matip’s telescopic leg to help.

Then again there’s also that big Belgian chap, Fellaini, to consider. Or is even 4.9 too much to pay for Mourinho’s new favourite?

Great shout on Ritchie. Did well for me while I've had him, but his appeal begins & ends at set-pieces. If Kojak has them all, there's no point keeping.

Is there any cheaper midfielder than Mkhi with more points? No there isn't.

The only reason to get rid of him is the end of an excellent set of fixtures... but he'll still get points.

Is Richarlison worth .9 m over Doucouré? Extra funds would get me Silva over Sterling and Azpilicueta into defence

Altho I'd have Sterling over Silva while Kun is out.

    My team currently:

    Fabianski Elliot
    Bavies Azpi Bellerin Cedric Mbemba
    Silva Mkhi Salah Ritchie RLC
    Kane Lukaku 4.5

Looking to lose one of the Man Utd players. Have 1 FT. Which option is better?

    A) Mkhi -> Sane/Sterling (rotation with B Silva?)
    B) Lukaku -> Jesus (curtailed game time/ returning from Brazil with CL after 3 days)
    C) Get a 4.0/4.5 starter in case of rotation
    D) Any other option?

A looks most promising, but dont really see a huge upside in spending the FT, might as well bank it and utilize next GW. United play hudders after pool.

I would go B due to Jesus goal involvement. He is the only striker and Brasil already qualified so Firmino may get a chance instead. Maybe Pep will ask BFA to save his only forward. But he is nailed for next 4 gw'S at least.
A with Sterling who is in better form then Sane and its cheaper is also not bad.

Wildcard shouldn't be about that anyway.

Should be for strategic reasons (fixt swing) or because a team is in a mess.

Although frustratingly I'm 0.1 off the team I want...but I think I'm more likely to get that by Cedric or Daniels falling in price rather than profiting from double risers.

I've Doucoure in tho just in case.

      altogether now....

When a double rise prospect appears in a break....that's Doucoure! 🙂

            My concern is your bench.
You probably have 2 non starters. Why don't you swap RLC for Cork or another defo 4.5 starter. Swap Eriksen for Couts (you have Kane) and that would give you a starter instead of Mariappa on the bench and mean you can have another Chelsea or City def instead of Cahill. ??

I`m on WC, and I have defenders from Chelsea, City, Leicester, Southampton and Burnley. This could be real headche in next few GW-ks. Or downgrade cedric to Wimmer maybe? Good rotation with Burnley. Which defenders do you have if you are on WC?

        Currently

        Davies Jones Ward Wimmer 4.9

So hoping Cedric falls or may go Daniels.

I'm looking to beyond GWK 11 as well as now....also investing more in a strong midfield three.

I agree the Wimmer/Burnley rotation is great. Also Ward can be played away too should Wimmer get dropped.

I know - my choice is essentially Silva or a cheaper mid and Azpi or no Azpi and Silva.

I've had stones before and when Kompany does come back he is the first one dropped.

Ideally I'd love to have Otamendi Azpilicuta in my defence but for the way I want to set up it weakens the rest of the team.

Fair enough. Just think that their fixtures warrant at least one defender from both of them at least. But if the mid and strike force are strong, cheaper defenders will do the business alright

Yeah Vardy and Cedric are good. Rashford has difficult fixtures and will be rotated with Martial from time to time. Though the way he is performing he atleast warrants a consideration definitely

Also Vardy is a cash cow - a player that can be downgraded and free up anything up to around 2m.

I think all wildcards need a cash cow - a player you are happy to drump but can free up enough cash.

Its why I also like Azpiliceuta - as he can be downgraded to a 4.5 and free up a tonne of cash.

Yes, Daniels could be great option after GW11. I`m having just 2 strong mid`s right now + Richarlison, Choupo and 4.5. Everton have great fixtures too after GW11. I hope they can get together until then..

Gone for a power 3 of Silva Eriksen and Coutinho. It just looks so good I can't bring myself to drop any of them.

      A or B?

A - Lacazette and Jones > Vardy and Alonso
      B - Lacazette > Jesus.

      Team at the moment....

      Elliott / Krul
      Kola / Davies / Jones / Lowe / Mbemba
      Silva / Salah / Ritchie / Carroll / RLC
      Lukaku / Kane / Lacazette

Confirmed my wc last night mainly due to the fixture swing and a possibility to get a player with massive potential and a low ownership with good fixtures.
For the first time ever I've decided to go 5-2-3 which is a bit unnerving. Anyone else playing 5 at the back?

I am not playing it but 5-2-3 is great formation to play Imo. Lots of CS this season.

        Something like
Alonso Otamendi Davies Kolasinac Jones plus two of Salah Silva Eriksen sterling etc. And Kane Jesus Vardy/Kaku depending on how much you spend in defence.

There have been fewer clean sheets this season, so 5 at the back would make me nervous. If you have enough defs with attacking potential it could pay off though.

VVD is a placeholder for Jones until GW12, so that's why I've gone with him.

Getting CM in would leave me with a benching headache most weeks. May just go down to Carroll and spread elsewhere. How long is Pogba expected to be out for?

Could easily be out for a month or more. No time line of Pogba. Just think CM has more potential as a 4th mid. And you could always jump to a form 5.5 ish midfielder from him. Stoke have great fixtures too

Andy King and RLC might offer some hope of returns but Carroll will play most consistently and let's be for real: he's the highest scoring 4.5 in the game and will probably remain by picking up a steady stream of 2's and 3's

What are people's experience with Draft? I joined two leagues at the start of the season. In one I'm the only who's made any transactions or team changes all season. In the other there are only two of us actively playing. Very disappointing. Though on the plus side I'm top of both leagues! But that's not the point. What are other people's experience?

Going to have to take a hit on this team, which is the best option...

      Foster / Elliot
      Alonso / Cedric / Naughton / Mbemba / Long
      Eriksen / Silva / Salah / Atsu / Loftus-Cheek
      Lukaku / Morata / Vardy

Thinking Morata - Jesus and Lukaku - Kane. If I take out Eriksen I have 8.4 to play with, best value around that price given the players I already have??

        Sterling vs Sane:
Sane is not a guaranteed starter for Germany AFAIK.
Sane comes back for GW8 as a rested player for Pep. Compared to Sterling, who might play in both international fixtures.

As long as Aguero is out I think they are both good options. To me it seems:

Sterling - Not really the finished product just yet. Wastes a lot of chances, can't shoot, but gets into a lot of dangerous positions and gets a lot of scoring opportunities.

Sane - Like him more as a player and can score goals and assist. But his goal threat is somewhat less than Sterling and his assurance of starts is more threatened.

At the moment prefer Sterling, but it's pretty close.

I actually would. Jones is a season keeper for me. Mourinho is the best defensive coach in the game and he'll park the bus so I could totally see him nabbing a clean sheet against Chelsea, for example. I'd bench him in the other games but even if I had to play him I'm pretty alright with it.

I've been playing 4-3-3 with two 4.5's. Fellaini I think is a significant upgrade on any 4.5 and could probably give some 6.0's like Ritchie a run for their money.

You're right about Loewe, though. I'm thinking about downgrading Silva to Sterling and using the extra 0.5 to upgrade to Cedric, giving my flexibility to play 5-2-3, but Loewe rotates fairly well with Ward and Huddersfield have been solid defensively, both against the small teams this season and all of last season in the Championship. He's a long term pick for now and when their fixtures turn.
