Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The current lull in domestic action allows us an opportunity to check in on the latest band of miscreants to dominate our Suspension Tightrope ahead of Gameweek 8.

Essentially, the Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

We’ll update the widget after each Gameweek, and roll out articles such as this one, which go over the Fantasy implications of the cards collected.

This includes the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and climb onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

As mentioned in our first Suspension Tightrope article of the season, the FA have altered the curfew rules for players accumulating yellow and red cards in 2017/18.

According to this season’s FA handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

Basically, players have to avoid five bookings over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to sidestep a suspension.

Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

From a Fantasy point of view, then, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards.

And Gameweek 32 – on Saturday March 31 – is currently the curfew for 10 yellow cards.

However, we’ve recently spoken to the FA for some clarification on this matter and they have confirmed that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, the 19th and 32nd Premier League fixtures are the cut-off points for five and ten bookings respectively.

So if Arsenal, for example, had a match postponed in November, which later fell after December 23rd (ie, the current date when 19 Gameweeks could be completed), then their players would still be liable to a suspension in that 19th fixture.

The second cut-off point is particularly pertinent, then, bearing in mind that the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28 and the FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31.

Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

Any ban to the current crop of players on four yellows – Palace’s Jason Puncheon, Southampton’s Oriol Romeu, Swansea’s Leroy Fer and West Ham right-back Pablo Zabaleta – would have minimal Fantasy impact.

Lower down, though, there are some big-hitters who currently sit just two yellows shy of a single-match suspension

Chelsea duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, along with Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, are among the 11 most owned defenders in FPL.

Worryingly, Alonso – boasting a 17.7% ownership – has already surpassed his tally of two yellows in the Premier League from last season.

Otamendi has collected a yellow card in three of the last five Gameweeks and, having earned nine bookings in each of the last two seasons, faces a tough task to avoid toppling off the Tightrope.

Potentially, once they have collected a fourth yellow, their managers could look to manage their respective fixtures in order to avoid picking up a ban for a “big match” against their league rivals.

So in Alonso’s case, Chelsea have a fixture against Manchester United in Gameweek 11. A booking in either Gameweek 8 or 9 could see him protected in the Gameweek 10 trip to Bournemouth.

For Otamendi, the clash with Arsenal – also in Gameweek 11 – looks the hotspot. So Pep Guardiola will be very wary of playing the Argentine in Gameweek 10 at West Brom, should the defender pick up a card in either Gameweek 8 or 9.

On the plus side, neither Otamendi or Alonso would seem likely to be called into action for their respective Carabao Cup ties which lie between Gameweeks 9 and 10 with this scenario in mind.

Or being cynical about it, back-to-back bookings in the next two Gameweeks would even allow them to serve out the suspension in the Carabao Cup, giving them the midweek off and getting the ban out of the way in advance.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is the other standout name here, having served up four assists in the opening seven.

The Scotland international was booked three times in the first four Gameweeks but has now gone three league matches without incurring the referee’s wrath.

Finally, Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is the only player suspended from domestic duties in the Premier League. After serving the first of a three-match ban last weekend, he won’t return to action until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Southampton.

That match against the Saints is the first of four home matches in six for Chris Hughton’s side, which also includes a trip to Swansea City.

Having bagged two goals and an assist in his last two outings at the Amex, Hemed – at 4.9 – could yet emerge as a valid option for those on the lookout for a cut-price pick in attack.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Thoughts on this wildcard draft please guys;

    Fabianski / Elliot
Cedric / Davies / Stones / David Luiz / Ward
    Sterling / Ramsey / Salah / Fellaini / Carroll
    Vardy / Kane / Jesus

Worried about no Lukaku and wonder if midfield has a couple of rotation risks. Think defence will step in to cover midfield if needed though.
    Would play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3.

Be as critical as possible please and provide a rating if possible.

Ramsey doesn't pass the eye test for me. Great price, good team and decent fixture with probable game time. Still left him out for lack of end product.
And that messes up that midfield.
      Salah has difficult fixtures.
Defence good although baps might sway to other defenders from those teams when CS.
      Attack optimal.

      Rating 679/1000

Fellaini feels too short term for a wildcard. I'd rather do Ramsey and Fellaini to Richarlison and Choupo-Moting given Stoke's upcoming fixtures.

Is there anyway to figure out how many managers are in a specific league apart from the OR rankings?

I need to figure out how many started in GW3 and what that indicates for a rank position of 15k.

Huge thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this. I'm not sure why FPL don't make it more obvious so you can judge your position in the Fan and National leagues.

Hello all. Thoughts about this wildcard draft? Flexible 4-3-3 which can become 3-4-3 for Richarlison and Choupo-Motings better fixtures. Do you think two 'cheapish' mids are ok or would you downgrade one to 4.5 and upgrade another? Jones and Ward could also be Stones and Mee but tempted to keep Jones.

    Fabianski
    Davies, Jones, Azpi, Ward
    Silva, Eriksen, Richarlison
    Jesus, Kane, Vardy

subs: Elliott --- Choupo-Moting, Cork, Hünemeier, 0.4 ITB

I'm trying to stick to only one 4.5 mid, ideally one guaranteed to play ... however I ended up selling Cork for King just to end up with an extra 100K

As you have 4.9, I would definitely take a punt on Fellaini

    My team after WC:

I did not hit the WC button yet, but Im currently on -8. I used the FT to get out Morata and bring in Jesus. Than I really wanted DSivla so got him in for -4 for Mkhitaryan. The last transfer was Couthino for Salah, that was a mistake. So currently on -8.

I want a city defender and Fabianski for Foster. Didn't dothis moves yet and can save my WC but Im on -8 then. 🙁

What makes you say he's surely less likely than Sterling to be rotated? B. Silva's role?

    A) Lukaku + Cedric

I'm on a -4 and possibly the only one here with Bobby F left in their team!
If I knew for sure Vardy will outscore him by at least 4 points, then it would obviously make sense to jump on the bandwagon and take another hit. But nobody knows anything about anything this season!

    Help!

    0FT (-4pts) £1.1m itb
    Elliot, Foster
    Alonso, Monreal, Bavies, Mbemba, Schindler
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie, Carroll, RLC
    Kane, Jesus, Firmino

    Appreciate the advice

Leave it at -4 and keep him. -8 hits are rarely worth it. Liverpool are at home, he’s seemingly still on pens and has to come back into the first XI after they looked so disjointed with Sturridge up top vs Newcastle.

Cheers for the dose of sanity - will hope Vardy blanks or at least doesn't rain down the goals in GW8!

With that Spurs spine and Silva, G.Jesus you should score well next GW, don’t worry about Vardy.

Stones vs Otamendi, who it better defense asset for Man city coverage?

I'm going Otamendi. He is determined to get his head on the ball on corner kicks...I think a few goals are coming (not DUE...I don't like that word...but rather he really tries in there).

Nah. CB's don't need rest. Barely any running. Yes, it could happen, and that's why we should be moving to have better bench players (I have had dead weight on the bench thus far), so my subs will be stronger on this WC.

Simple point: I need to decide on Lukaku. I want to drop him ahead of this tough run but it is a tough move. If I could be sure of Batman it would be awesome, but I really want to activate the WC right now but the Lukaku decision is holding me up!

Good point but I'm not hellbent on having United. I think this is time to jump off...I'm definitely dropping Mkhi. Rash would be amazing if anything happened to Lukaku (similar to Jesus right now and thus my thoughts on Batman...not sure on his playing time even with Morata out though). Cheers.

Are you going to captain him over your other players in the next 4 GWs? If not then sell

I'm and (I can imagine) a lot are in the same boat. I think your better having Bats/vardy/Jesus and a man city mid for the next 3-4 games than lukaku. He'll score over the next 2 weeks, but don't think he'll outscore the other options.

    Elliot
    Luiz Bavies Monreal
    Erikson Silva Richarlison Fellaini
    Kane Jesus Vardy/Morata

    Pereira Mee Mbemba Tarroll

    Thx

Looks great. Maybe try and squeeze a City defender in there instead of Monreal given that their next two look like bankers for cleanies.

Second option as it is more likely to pay off long term (Otamendi is more nailed than Sterling when all players are fit) and you get to save some money.

Thanks. Also thinking for players to get decent points I'm looking at least 3-4 goals a game. Not impossible, but a clean sheet more likely imo

City have goals in them and sterling looks good value short term, he is a transfer waiting to happen at some point though. I've had Otamendi a while and he's doing surprisingly well.

    Could this WC work?

    Forster, Elliot

    Coutinho, Sterling, Ritchie, Fellaini, Carroll
    Lukaku, Kane, Vardy

Name a player that seem a to be totally going under the radar. For me it's definitely fabregas.

    1. Sánchez

That's cause he's a rubbish pick but then good picks don't go under the radar really.

Rudiger has played 90 minutes 6/7 games and is 5.9 and has 2% ownership

Fabregas is going under the radar because he’s done next to nothing so far this season. I think he could be an option when he starts picking up returns, but currently he’s not even on the radar.

Nope. I've got Coutinho and will be cashing him in on wildcard. If I had Liverpool it'd be Mane or Salah. Coutinho's going to drop into LCM role with Mane back and can't keep pinging it in the top bin.
