Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Thursday

A late Harry Kane goal spares a dreadful England, while the complexities of qualification in South America could have a knock-on effect when the Fantasy calendar resumes in eight days’ time.

Here are the notes from last night’s World Cup matches.

Kane again to the rescue

Harry Kane scored for the fourth consecutive match to win a woeful match for lifeless England.

The Spurs striker now has 14 goals from his last nine matches in all competitions, with a late winner against Slovenia confirming England’s qualification for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

His 37.5% Fantasy Premier League ownership will now be hoping that Sunday’s dead rubber in Lithuania will tempt England boss Gareth Southgate to rest Kane, but that seems unlikely should the forward retain the captain’s armband.

Man City’s Kyle Walker provided the assist on a night when England laboured to break down their well-organised opponents.

His club team-mate Raheem Sterling covets a central role in Pep Guardiola’s side and was handed a chance to prove he was worthy of just that when Southgate elected to play him behind Kane.

But Sterling fluffed his lines, too often caught in possession in key areas, although he was unlucky not to open the scoring as England finally came to something approaching life in the second-half.

Few players impressed on the night, although the in-form Marcus Rashford caught the eye before the break with a display of pace and intent from the left-wing, and Joe Hart ended up with the man of the match award for a fine double save towards the end of an otherwise unedifying night.

England will travel to Russia with the hopes of a nation towards the past caring end of the scale.

Fantasy managers will be rather more invested in Sunday’s trip to Vilnius as it provides Southgate with a chance to experiment with his line-up and rest key assets for what will be a busy October once the domestic, and then European, schedule kicks in again.

Kane’s pitch time could be all the more pertinent with Romelu Lukaku now
ruled out of Belgium’s clash with Bosnia on Saturday.

The Man United striker has failed to train all week due to an ankle complaint but is optimistic of making Tuesday’s encounter with Cyprus.

It is thought that the issue is the same injury that cast doubt over Lukaku’s start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 7. Reports state that the striker had painkilling injections to overcome the problem and he completed 90 minutes against the Eagles. Manchester United are said to be in constant contact with the Belgium FA over the Lukaku’s condition.

However, Fantasy managers are now left with a situation where there are doubts – of varying degrees – over the availability of the three top-scoring FPL forwards – Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Morata and Lukaku – ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

South American Plot Twists

A number of Premier League stars, most notably Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi, are in for a fraught final World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

With the top four South American teams going through automatically to the finals in Russia, and the fifth into a play-off against New Zealand, only Brazil have already qualified.

Six teams below them are now fighting it out for the four places remaining.

Uruguay, at home to Bolivia next, need just a draw to guarantee their place. Chile and Colombia also have their fate in their own hands, but the former must travel to Brazil and the latter to Peru, with both needing a win to secure qualification for sure.

Argentina are currently out of the qualification places, and will have to win at altitude in Ecuador. If they do, they will be assured of at least a play-off place. Draw and they’re relying on other results to go their way, lose and they’re out.

All of that sets up a huge night for Sanchez’s Chile in Brazil.

The Arsenal midfielder scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Ecuador last night, adding to his back-to-back assists over the last couple of Gameweeks. Although he’s back in action on Wednesday morning, Sanchez’s trip to Watford isn’t until next Saturday evening, giving him a little more time to recuperate.

Otamendi is in for a do or die tie in Ecuador before travelling back for a 3pm home match against Stoke City two Saturdays from now. He played the full 90 minutes, as did Man United’s stand-in keeper Sergio Romero, as Argentina were held to a goalless draw at home to Peru last night.

Whatever the outcomes for their national teams, both Sanchez and Otamendi are likely to be drained by a fraught international break.

Brazil drew 0-0 in Bolivia, with Man City’s Gabriel Jesus playing the full 90 minutes of a match played at altitude.

Philippe Coutinho had a poor evening and was subbed off after 66 minutes, Chelsea’s Willian replacing him.

Fernandinho was given an eight-minute run-out towards the end of the fixture, while Roberto Firmino was an unused sub, as was Ederson.

David Ospina and Davinson Sanchez played the full 90 minutes in Colombia as they lost 2-1 to Paraguay.

Spurs defender Sanchez has started the last four matches for his club but might struggle to make that a fifth, at home to Bournemouth next Saturday, as he will have been involved in a winner-takes-all clash in Peru early on Wednesday morning.

West Brom striker Salomon Rondon started and finished Venezuela’s 0-0 draw at home to Uruguay.

Elsewhere…

Bournemouth’s Josh King scored twice and provided an assist as Norway romped to an 8-0 win in San Marino.King was, however, forced off with a knock, with the Norwegian media reporting that he had an ice pack on his knee after his withdrawal.

Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen got the winner in Denmark’s 1-0 victory in Montenegro. Both he and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes.

Germany eased past Northern Ireland 3-1, with Leroy Sane and Emre Can given second-half run-outs. Shkodran Mustafi and Antonio Rudiger were unused substitutes.

Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt and Steven Davis played the full 90 minutes for Northern Ireland, with McAuley providing the assist for the home side’s late consolation goal.

Scotland’s last-gasp win over Slovakia included 90 minutes for Andrew Robertson, James Morrison and Matty Phillips. Darren Fletcher played 78 minutes before being replaced by James McArthur.

Brighton keeper Matty Ryan and Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy started and finished Australia’s 1-1 draw with Syria.

Bournemouth striker Lys Mousset scored as France’s U21 side won their Euro U21 qualifier 2-1 against Montenegro.

      Fellaini, Ramsey, Surman, Silva, Hazard

Fakked majorly up by trading in and out Davies and lost a lot of money doing so.

Two key decisions I need to make:
      * Which Man City defender to go for (Stones/Otamendi/Walker)
      * Whether to keep Firmino or take a hit to replace him with someone.

I guess consensus round here would be Otamendi and take a hit for Vardy. Hard to know if I agree though. Hmm...

Don't think Bobby's minutes matter with Brazil, no way Klopp starts with Sturridge against United. Would be tempted to stick with him in a big game if Vardy is only in for a hit.

Yeah, I think he has a good chance of playing, not sure I fancy his chances of scoring though - he's been pretty anonymous recently and Mourinho's usual style in big games is to try to keep things tight. 0-0 at Anfield last season...

          Cheers for the input.

He has been anonymou recently, but still had a couple of chances. The only away game United have been tested so far was Stoke and they conceded two. I can't see a clean sheet for them this time.. And will he park the bus again? Think he has more weapons at his disposal this year, just depends if he reverts to type. Don't fancy a Liverpool cleanie either ha

Suspect he went to Stoke with a plan to be on the front foot and got caught out by a couple of sucker punches, he'll set up very differently against Liverpool I imagine, especially given their threat on the counter-attack. He was never short of weapons at Chelsea but he loved to grind out a performance against the other big teams.

I guess the fact I'm arguing this side of the coin suggests I should take the hit but I'm aware it's a risk either way...

Yep, the way you are talking suggests you want to take a hit so you should do it!

Talking of busses though, you are taking a hit for someone who is playing a Pulis side..

I don't rate stones at all
+ Ota Attacking threat and BPS ( if no YC , which is rarely happened)

And if kompany is fit , he is more likely to rotate with stones than ota.

Both Stones/Otamendi might be prone to rotation with Kompany back(if that's the case), so Walker seems like a good bet for playing time and assists. Firmino to Vardy for a hit could be paid back in a week or two

That's my thinking on the Man City defense but Walker is nearly a million more expensive so that's quite a premium to pay to try to reduce rotation risk. And it is only reduced, let's face it, how surprised would we really be if Danilo started at right back and Walker was benched? It's a bit of a nightmare!

            Thanks for the thoughts 🙂

I'd rather pay 0.5 more and go from Walker to Alonso - Chelsea fixtures are great over a long period of time.

Fairly set on a Man City defender - think they're better than Chelsea options for the next few at least (albeit not by much). Will likely be wildcarding in a month or so so I don't have to think too long term.

Do you have a compelling argument for Otamendi? I know you were wrestling with him vs Stones. I theoretically have the budget to stretch to Walker but no doubt I'd have use for the extra cash in another week or two.

Stones has appeared on this only intermittently, while Otamendi has been ever present:

              http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/1026/

Secondly, Otamendi is a baps gobbler:

Fair enough, I'm concerned primarily with picking someone who won't get dropped but trying to work that out is basically impossible, was hoping you'd got the inside track on gametime somehow 🙂

I do. Everybody does. Go to transfers, select minutes played ...

And, as far as I am aware, Otamendi has had few, if any mishaps, this Season:

He'll be coming back from a tough couple of games in South America for a Saturday kick off though, if news comes out that Kompany is fit (I know, I know) then I'd definitely be concerned he could be rested. If you're confidently predicting Pep's line up then you're a braver man than I! 😉

I don't own him and was planning on bringing him in this week, but Otamendi may be benched this weekend. Will wait to hear what Pep says about Big Vinny in his presser. If he is fit, don't fancy Otamendi this week.

I'm an Eriksen owner and definitely concerned he may be benched with the games Spurs have ahead.

Yeah, Man City defensive options are tricky to gauge at the minute, I'm trying to decide who to go for myself.

Can't see Eriksen getting benched though, would certainly be a shock I think.

        Mkhi Redmond Ramsey (RLC, Carroll)
        Lukaku Kane Firmino

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

        Coutinho versus Salah

Mohamed Salah has been a revelation at Liverpool firing off four goals and racking up two assists n just seven games.

He’s an underlying stats legend too with more shots, big chances, close range efforts and shots on target than any other midfielder.

There’s no doubting his Fantasy appeal.

        But…..

Could Coutinho be a better option, at a slightly cheaper price?

Since returning to the side in Gameweek 5 the Brazilian as scored twice, assisted another and brought in two double digit hauls.

Also since Gameweek 5 Coutinho has bettered Salah for shots and has created almost three times as many chances as well as notching three times Salah’s baseline bonus.

For those on a wildcard Coutinho looks possibly the better option?

Who do you think is better and why?

Or do you think Liverpool midfielders can be surplus to requirements over a tough couple of games – at home to Manchester United and away to Spurs?

I'd go Coutinho because he's cheaper and on set pieces, plus a differential over the popular Salah

I have salah but prefer coutinho/mane ... the fact that he loves to miss a sitter every game is annoying.

Coutinho is class and more fun to watch.
          Same for mane...

Watching highlights v Leicester and Newcastle he seemed to drop a little deep a times? Plus the two goals he scored were a free kick and a cracker (albeit he has scored quite a few of those). Salah just gets forward much more. Should have scored more in the games he's played too.

Coutinho against the tougher teams who sit back and defend well

Salah against the weaker teams who try to play football against Pool(and those who have an average goalkeeper)

I prefer Salah. Underlying stats are good and he seems to be fixture proof since he's always getting some chances, despite wasting a lot of them. Could imagine him getting somewhere around 15 goals this season

One week Salah is the best option. One week Coutinho is the best option. One week Mane is the best option. One week Firmino is the best option.

It's funny, such is the push for expensive defenders and strikers that we're now forced to choose between midfielders.

If it's two expensive ones then it's two of Cout, Salah, Eriksen and Hazard, and I can't decide.

Of Cout v Salah, it's a toss-up. Cout shoots more but Salah gets into better positions.

Still on Salah. Don't know why, there's always a new comer in EPL who earns big points until the end of season, and I think this time for Salah.

Moreover, most people go with Mane over Salah at the beginning. Then Mane's red card ruined everything. I think keep on Salah would be better.

Coutinho for the long-term. Much better player with an eye for goal. Can also see Salah rested/rotated with Mane and Firmino as options if Sturridge plays up top.

There's no difference between the two. By the time Liverpool's fixtures have improved, Salah & Coutinho will be worth almost the same. Add in the factor of rotation with Lallana coming back, & suddenly both look expensive at 9m compared to Man City options.

Wait 2 gameweeks, see if one is clearly outshining the other & go down that route.

Maybe best to ignore them for now (on wildcard).
Next 2 games are very tough, so could wait and see who's the best choice to get.

Some top managers are going without any Liverpool players.
And despite scoring lots of goals no Liverpool mid was in the top 5-10 top scoring mids last season iirc (please correct if I'm wrong).

            Top scoring mids last season:
            Sanchez 264
            Alli 225
            Hazard 224
            Eriksen 218
            KDB 199
            Sigurdsson 181
            Firmino 180
            King 178
            Son 174
            Coutinho 171
            ...
            Mane 156

So Firmino and Coutinho were 7th and 10th respectively.
Mane would have been higher but only played 27 games.

I'll be wanting Coutinho for the the longer term but as much as Liverpool have a decent record against the bigger clubs, it's not that they put a shedload past them, FPL-wise

I feel remarkably unclean saying this, but I'd suggest Sterling's (ok, Silva then) a better short term option unttil GW 11

I think I can go without lpool against a Man u and Spurs def, but Coutinho is prob the pick for me , he does seem a bonus magnet and does have corners I think and free kicks so has opportunities to attack

I would expect Coutinho to the be the player with the highest Base BPS of the attacking assets, Mane may match or better slightly but there is an extra 0.5 mil aprox having Coutinho

ive got him at the moment in WC team but may trade down and out of lpool because of he next 2 games

          big plusses for both options.
Coutinho - set pieces and shots outside the box.
Salah - does seem to get a couple of chances per game. Don't think there are many players in Premiership who could score that last goal against Arsenal. an excellent option for counter-attacking goals which so many in PL seem to be.

Salah more prone to rotation in busy schedule?

As far as fixtures go think Liverpool have proven can score against any of the big sides if everyone fit.
People might have forgotten before he got sent off Mane was causing City defence all sorts of problems. Red card was an absolute game changer in that match.

Yes, they score against the big teams

But they don't score more than Man City at home to Stoke and Burnley

1.this is a comparison between 2 Liverpool options.
              2. Burnley have been to Liverpool, Chelsea & Spurs and not conceded too many.
3.You still have to pick between 3 or 4 Man City options to identify where the points are coming from (particularly as Kun is injured)
              4. Coutinho or Salah both capable of matching individual City options over next 2 games.

I brought Couts in for the injured Pogba 3 weeks back. I was (and still am) chasing and as an under the radar differential, he's helped my rank rise from 2.8m > 846k in the last 2 weeks - as well has closing the gap significantly to the leader in my ML (98pts > 47pts).

Having enjoyed his two hauls, I'm currently on WC and toying with dropping him for Silva or Sane for a couple of weeks, with a view to potentially bringing him and Salah in for GW10. A lot depends on whether I move Lukaku > Jesus. If I don't I'll want double city mids.

          I prefer Salah to Coutinho.

In my opinion, Coutinho's stats since his reintroduction into the team are skewed by him scoring from outside the box twice.

He takes his shots from too far out for me. This is backed up by average goal attempts and average goal attempts in box stats. Coutinho has an average of 5.7 goal attempts per match to Salah's 3.4. However, Salah leads on goal attempts in the box per match 3.0 to 1.0. As a result, Salah also has a high shot accuracy percentage (58.3 - 17.6) and a higher conversion rate (16.7 - 11.8).

I don't believe that Coutinho will continue to score from outside the box every match, although he may continue to score a higher baseline bonus than Salah. I do however believe that Salah will continue to get in goal scoring positions - effectively making him a 9.2 striker listed as a midfielder (although often wasteful).

I also think Salah will be effective against the stronger teams with his pace on the counter attack. All of that combined is why he's staying in my team.

Think they are a toss up (all 3) and likely will be within a few points of each other by end of season.....notwithstanding Cout's late start.
But for me, I will be focusing on Spurs, Chelsea and City to form the core of my team.....will use 2FTs this time around to switch out Salah/Firm foe Silva/TBC.
Just feel Pool either too hit and miss or the points are too dispersed to warrant using circa 9.0 to keep one of them in a slot for the season.

          Both a good picks.

Salah will score a fair few goals in this league. That being said, I believe Coutinho has a reached a level very few players are at. Coutinho's CM trend are at an elite level. In fact, he's pretty much in the top bracket for output per 90 whilst in CM. He just has everything, and he's cheaper.

I have Salah now but would get Coutinho on a wildcard.

I have Salah, I'm probably going to ride out the tougher fixtures with him and hope Liverpool stay true to form and perform in those, from GW10 I'll add Coutinho to Salah and double up.

So far they've had two of the top teams, they destroyed Arsenal and were looking good against City before Mane saw red, they seem to rise to the occasion.

Don't think it's a easy as looking to pin down the best one, it was an impossible task last year given the way Klopp likes to play, they'll all score points and they'll often do it together.

Salah is like a poundland version of Messi, if he was more clinical he'd be amazing.

So I've taken out salah for cout on my wildcard. Salah has been great but i can see value in cout. Problem is my only other 'big ' mid is sterling. And although I feel I've chosen them for good reasons my midfield now feels a little punty. Got chupo, RLC and yet to be decided besides. I've stacked defence and attack. What do you reckon would you be comfortable with that mid?

Swap Kaku+Ritchie to Sterling+Jesus while I already have Silva. Maximizing 3 players of City only until week 11 then I would sell Sterling. Bring back Kaku on week 12, don't care if I had to suffer 0.2 to buyback.

        Any comment? bad idea?

I don't like having 2 mids from the same team. Your ideal scenario is relying on 3+ goals:

          Jesus 2G
          Silva 2A
          Sterling 1G 1A

How realistic is this? Vs getting a defender in, instead of Sterling.

          Jesus 2G
          Silva 2A
          Otamendi/Walker CS and 1A.

You also have to hope Sane/KDB etc do not perform.

If fit, he'll play. They don't have Kelechi anymore, so no other strike option.

This is assuming Pep doesn't go ALL Pep and plays only midfielders up front

Would be highly surprised if he didnt start. They have very limited options upfront. And I guess Sterling would be most likely? Also looking like playing a lot of minutes over the IB.

Yeah maybe not that - would be tempted by Eriksen -> Richarlison for the long term, and upping Otamendi -> Walker I guess. Can see why you're keeping Eriksen though as a player - who do you have where at the moment in your need for 0.2?

Had Eriksen from the start, felt he could be a season keeper though that could change. Though Eriksen to Richarlison would let me do Vardy to Jesus... That would be something different. Would have to change Otamendi as well.

Makes sense - I find with the WC I get stuck in a certain pattern with some players I don't even think of moving on... always good to challenge that, for example I had Kolasinac in mine two weeks ago and then swapped to the more hipster pick in Bellerin who saved me the 0.1 I needed to build my squad!

Always options that could score just as well 😀

Not necessary, but 3 of United's next 4 are tough and not the best for clean sheets. Could swap jones for city if you have nothing else to worry about.

Managed to save my FT and had a great GW.
            Foster - Elliot
            Maguire - Bavies - Ward - Clark - Dunk
            Mkhi - Silva - Eriksen - Gross - Woodburn
            Rashford - Kane - Jesus

            0.8m ITB

            Feedback appreciated.

Have all international break to work this one out.
            Mkhi out for who?
Thinking Sterling/Sane and save one FT

              Nice one and good side.

Yep, I think Sterling or Sane is good. I'm leaning Sterling, just a bit cheaper and the flat track bully past!

            Starting XI gw 8:

            Elliot
            Davies Jones Naughton TAA
            Eriksen Salah Miki
            Kane Jesus Lacazette

            Subs: Caroll Mbemba RLC

Would you make any changes to the starting XI and why?

My thoughts: If there is to be scored a lot of goals in the MCU - LIV game my hope is that Salah and Miki will be involved. If not then I got a defender from each team to cover the CS (im afraid Mou will park the bus). Not the way to reach max points potential, but im thinking its a safe way to get a decent gw instead of taking a huge risk and get either a shitty or a really good gw. My OR is pretty decent so im looking to minor the potential damage this gw will do to me. What do you guys think? (Sorry for the long post - hope you will read and reply regardless)

            Cheers!

I'm tempted to keep Mkhi too actually.

I'd be tempted to move TAA on for one of the Burnley defenders, though, with 'Pool fixtures stiffening and it never being clear who is starting for Liverpool in that position.

Anyone looking at Martina (4.3m) on WC? Everton will surely improve?

Wildcard or not, have you watched Everton recently? You get what you pay for I guess. I know he is enticing at that price, but not nailed and they are leaky anyway.
