Technical Area – Budget Midfield Options

One key to a successful Fantasy season has always been the early discovery of a midfield gem.

The 2015/16 season saw Riyad Mahrez rise from relative obscurity to the heights of a 240-point season, while last campaign, Josh King’s 16 goals powered many Fantasy line-ups to the top of their respective mini-leagues.

After seven Gameweeks, we are beginning to accumulate sufficient data to begin making more confident assertions regarding a player’s underlying performance metrics.

This international break is, therefore, an ideal time to evaluate the potential candidates for the title of must-have budget midfielder this time around.

It also gives us the chance to roll out – for the first time in Technical Area – data on expected goals (xG) and assists (xA), a new source of information which will soon be available to our members.

The problem is with your midfield. It's too light. Transfering out Lukaku and Salah are sideway moves IMO. So, maybe if you can bring in a decent budget MF as a playing mid, it'd bode well.

Morning all, I have avoided playing my WC as I don't think my squad is in bad enough shape to warrant it. When are the best times to play both of them? I'm planning to use the second one near the end of the season ahead of a likely DGW but when is it the best time to play my first one?

    DDG - Elliott
    Bavies - Mee - Hegazi - TAA - Mbemba
    Salah - Richarlison - Ramsey - Ritchie - Carroll
    Kane - Jesus - Vardy

There is another International Break in 4 weeks time which are often the best time to play WC.

If you don't really need it then you can always hold onto it until xmas and just use it when you really need it.

Use the WC when you firmly believe that your team will be greatly improved by changes that are time sensitive and that cost -8 or more otherwise.
There is no pointing holding a wildcard just to have it in reserve, nor is there any sense in using it just because it is there.
If you are happy with your team then dont feel pressure to use it, even using it over Christmas could give you a nice edge at a time where squads can look a little stretched.

I think it will weaken Chelsea's defence.

In terms of playing time then Danny Drinkwater can easily slot in there once fit.

with potential injuries to both kante and fellaini, does this affect our teams in any way?
does this lower the appeal in chelsea defense?
how does it affect the chelsea attack? is cesc now a better option than hazard considering the big difference in price?
what about lukaku? does a change in midfield setup affect him in any way?

would love to hear your thoughts...

    1. Ghost Gooner

Might affect United more but only defensively (corners and setpieces).

I feel with Luiz and later Drinkwater, if Kante is out long term-ish, Chelsea can cope defensively. Fab will play the easier games alongside Bakayoko with the former in harder games

it does affect them defensively but they are playing cpa, WAT, bou in the next 3 fixtures so still hopeful on to cleanies.

I think Chelsea attack is affected more by morata, still expect goals though it's just hard to see any nailed mids, hazard only probably.

Man Utd it won't affect though they have herrera to come in, think lukaku injury over reported, Belgium already qualified and Jose wouldn't have wanted him olaying

ok guys homing in on my WC

    Pope, Elliott
    Luiz, bavies, stones, mee, jones
    Hazard, silva, choupo, RLC, Surman
    Kane, Jesus, vardy

Leaves me with 0.2itb as I've had stones since gw1 but could always change to otamendi

over time theres a rough idea that Jesus will become morata when kun returns and hazard may get downgraded to pool midfielder in order to bring lukaku back with a change in fixtures

    any issues?

I think you could still go 1 defender lighter... Kyle Naughton & Cedric will be right up there at top of the next 4-week scoring charts - maybe downgrade Luiz to Naughton (+1.2m) although difficult to know where to spend it as all your players could do well.

          Would you keep Surman anyway?

For me, he’s a better option than any other 4.5s because you’re not going to play them much, and there’s little risk of losing money on him, whereas Carroll or Cheeky could easily go down to 4.4.

I don't think so. I'm going with the same, mainly due to price point and lack of other options due to injuries. Should be worth it at least for the next 2, may make a nice profit in that time as well.

Never drink coffee. Only ever had two cups, taste so bitter.

Infact even with tea only have cup a day in the morning.

Working in City centre its scary how people are just addicted to coffee. People just drink it as a ritual or to fit in, not the best way especially as the big coffee chain drinks are seriously unhealthy.

I've only ever drank coffee twice, one was Irish the other was standard, hated both 🙂

I had a cup of tea yesterday which was my 1st in 2 or 3 months 😯

Drink caffeine free herbal teas and lots of water. Tony Robbins states you should be drinking half your body weight in water each day.

Man up as well and show some strength. I went a whole month recently without alcohol and chocolate. 😉

Beer, Football & Coffee are simple pleasures that I will not go without! Football and beer being one of my favourite combos in life. Of the three, coffee would easily be the first to go! Those lattes that I've become fond of in recent years can't be healthy!

Changed WC again as Fellaini's injury could be nasty.

    Thoughts?

    Courtois
    Cedric | Davies | Otamendi | Jones
    Couthino | Sterling | Matic
    Kane | Lukaku | Jesus

Sub Elliot | Matic | Carroll | Hunemeimer 0 itb

I was hoping the Matic in the starting line up was the error...

Well even as a Sterling owner, I dunno there's something off about this team. It just gives off a strange vibe. Hard to say in words.

It's all about the vibe I guess. Yeah just can't find any options around 5.0 in the mid. Can't have it all I guess.

I like the vibe. Matic is a bit meh, but you can’t have them all. A great forward line, excellent defence and some good midfield players as well.

I imagine him feeling trapped by the whole thing. Probably doesn't let anyone know about his love for fpl for fear of being outed

    Pope - (Elliott)
    Azpi - Stones - Davies - Jones - Mbemba
    Silva - Coutinho - Choupo - Gross - Surman
    Kane - Jesus - Vardy

On a WC and 0.6 ITB, plan being 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 depending on fixtures, and downgrade Azpi to upgrade Vardy/Jesus/Coutinho if required for flexibility.

    Any thoughts on that approach?

      • 14 Years

I'm on WC too and I did have Azpi in one draft. My issue with him is his price when there so may other ds at 4.5-5.5 racking the points in.

My D is: Fonte, Ward, Bavies, Cedric and Otamendi giving me 5 great cs options each week.

I'm not a fan of having non-playinfg ds in the team either so no Mbemba for me.

Silva has no goal threat so I just don't see his points continuing. I would like to see Richarlison instead of Chopper M.

      Good front 3.

Not a fan of Ayew/cheap 3 rd forward.

See my D above for better options.

Fabs could be Pope who is really another Heaton from the evidence we have seen so far - 5.3ppg.

After latest team news, I’m thinking something like this, with 0.5in the bank.

    Elliot (Krul)
    Davies, Jones, Cédric, Ward, (Hünnemaier)
    Silva, Hazard, Doucoure (Surman, Stephens)
    Jesus, Lukaku, Kane

Could upgrade Krul to a real keeper. May just keep it for the rainy day fund though, as it’s a fairly imbalanced team.

    What do you think?

I tend to agree, the plan would otherwise be to have Fab and Jesus for a couple of weeks and then switch to Richarlison and Aguero when he is back.
