Technical Area – Budget Midfield Options

One key to a successful Fantasy season has always been the early discovery of a midfield gem.

The 2015/16 season saw Riyad Mahrez rise from relative obscurity to the heights of a 240-point season, while last campaign, Josh King’s 16 goals powered many Fantasy line-ups to the top of their respective mini-leagues.

After seven Gameweeks, we are beginning to accumulate sufficient data to begin making more confident assertions regarding a player’s underlying performance metrics.

This international break is, therefore, an ideal time to evaluate the potential candidates for the title of must-have budget midfielder this time around.

It also gives us the chance to roll out – for the first time in Technical Area – data on expected goals (xG) and assists (xA), a new source of information which will soon be available to our members.

Just looked at Euro WC qualifier groups and results. With Sweden winning 8-0 now Holland have to win by 7-0?

Why not scrap goal difference as a tie breaker and use head to head. Some of the nations involved are too poor to be even at this stage tbh. San Marino on -44 and Liechtenstein/Gilbratar -34 after 9 games is an embarressment to International football.

All the poor teams should be in their own mega group (like in South America) with the top 4 earning a playoff spot vs the best finishers in the elite section

      It wouldnt be fair.
Plus olaying with better teams makrs you better. Look at Faroe Islands like they make progress, slow but still.

They still get a shot at qualifying via the playoffs though. Getting beat 8-0 teaches you nothing imo. Faroe Islands probably have youth development, improved coaching, more professionals playing throughout Europe to thank for their improvement

Staying in that past of the world, Iceland is the remarkable story, given their population. They used to be group jokes - no longer!

This will make the federations look to improve their standard of football. Getting into a no win situation breeds apathy. How is a small nation going to qualify in a group with Spain and Italy?

Take a closer look at the maths; results against the lowest place team are discounted. I think it still leaves Netherlands with an unfeasible winning margin, but I don't think it's 7.

I'm still perplexed as to why the rules are being ignored - unless both got identical goal diff against Lux.

Think it goes like this: When determining which team is second in a particular group every result counts. Then when second-placed teams are compared to each other the results against the worse team in the group are removed.

    Foster Elliot
    Davies Daniels Cedric Suttner Long
    Salah Mkhi Ritchie Carroll Carrick
    Kane Lukaku Lacazette

    1 FT, 0 in bank

    a) lose Mkhi
    b) lose Lukaku
    c) lose Lacazette
    d) lose 2 of the above for a hit
    e) wildcard
    f) something else

I think it's your 11th player that needs improving, not Lukaku/Lacazette or Mkhitaryan. One of them will need to be sacrificed though. Something like Lukaku/Lacazette to Vardy and Suttner to Monreal/Kolasinac/Azpi/Alonso (depending on money) would work, no?

The main point is that Vardy and Arsenal/Chelsea def would almost certainly outscore Lacazette and Carroll/Suttner.

I honestly think if Herera can up his game to last year’s level he’ll be way better than Fellaini. Agreed he’s not such a big threat in the air but he has much better control of the ball and a way better passer.

Think I’m settled on this team for my wildcard.
    Thoughts?

    Pope Elliot
    Walker Luiz Davies Ward Cedric/Daniels
    Hazard Sterling Choupo RLC TC
    Kane Jesus Vardy

Can afford Cedric if his price falls or if I earn 0.1. Otherwise will opt for Daniels as his fixtures are good from GW11.

Anyone here have FIFA 18 yet? How is it? Been hearing mostly complaints, people saying defending is absolute f***ed on it. Annoyed that the other team has an indicator when defending on online seasons.

Haven't gotten the game yet, very busy recently (hence less time on FFS) but I've built a starter team on UT and just waiting to get it later. Though people seem very annoyed with the state of it.

Defending is crap mate. It’s too easy to score a goal or concede.

It sounds like a game where if you have pace in your team, you can quite literally just run through the other defense. Super high-scoring. I'll be honest, I'm gonna exploit that 😆

        4-3-2-1:
        Taison-Aspas-Williams
        Fred-Paulinho-Rafinha
        Telles-Naldo-Felipe-Pereira
        Fahrmann

I don't get why they made changes to defending. Defending was fine as is. So many other more obvious things they could've fixed.

It’s joke playing with players like Ronaldo & Neymar they can score out of the box so easily with finesse shots. Neymar literally doesn’t loose the ball so easy to run past defenders with him.

Lots of pace downgrades among defenders too. Doesn't bode well.

Most of my games in FIFA 17 were either clawed out wins by 1-2 goals or absolute maulings. Very few high scoring contests.

          Defending was fine in 17

Game play is totally different now ... too easy to score now
          graphics/Fans/stadiums/commentators all good.

17 was one of the best games yet. FIFA 11 and FIFA 17 were both revolutionary. Graphics look okay but I honestly think 17 looked better, love the addition of fans, stadiums look great...and hate Martin Tyler's commentary because they always use the same one. Would love if they updated his lines or added other commentators.

Yeah I saw Antonio's card and I knew everyone would be using him. I don't mind a high scoring game but only if we're both breaking down each other with difficulty, not like a back and forth basketball game

      Makes Fabregas better for FPL.

Chelsea could do with Drinkwater being fit for the next games, that's for sure.

Yes, it's interesting. With a run of easy fixtures, Chelsea don't need a double pivot of Kante and Bakayoko; could be a good time to get Fabregas.

Fixtures should be considered, but also should Jones's returns of 6, 6, 7, 1, 6, 9, 6. At that price you could almost call him a set and forget for as long as he's healthy.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

That's quite a caveat. Plus, we just haven't seen the United defence properly challenged; I'm taking a chance on dropping Jonsey from my WC squad now.

Fair enough, but for a Mourinho coached side the fixtures rarely impact the defense. I'd be dropping their attacking options before one of their defenders - especially for Cedric, whose opening fixtures have been just as kind, yet he's gone for 6, 1, 6, 1, 6, 2, 1.

Because, again, the original query was Cedric or Jones. For me, it's not that close, even with tough fixtures. You'll just want Jones back in GW12, and would waste a transfer to do it.

He's been playing as a striker when Carrol was injured. Now on the wing with Carrol fit. As a forward he looked lively, better than the team as a whole. Out on the wing he doesn't look as good but the team playing better and getting the results.

Who wants to be Slaven 😆

From an FPL view, he's priced correctly, but that's a really horrible price bracket 😉

I'd rather have a more expensive forward personally...

On the topic of this article, the injury to Fellaini means that on my WC squad I can get both Richarlison and Choupo-M. They rotate not too badly (a couple of GWs aside) - problem there is Richarlison has scored all his goals away from home!

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

That's the thing - I don't pick my mids and forwards with rotation in mind, can't predict when the goals are coming (with a few exceptions of course).

    Ready to go?

    Elliott
    Alonso, Bavies, Jones, Ward
    Eriksen, Salah, DSilva
    Kane (c), Lukaku, Joselu
    (Foster, TCarroll, Mbemba, Cork)

Taking a hit (-4) this week.
Will look forward to have Vardy or Morata (for Salah and Joselu) in GW9.
    Thanks.
