The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

As our Frisking the Fixtures article will reveal later today, we’re now entering a significant period of the season that appears to offer up a greater variety of value mid-price options.

This gives Fantasy managers the opportunity to re-align their sights and perhaps consider changes to formation and budget allocation.

Add in the current confusion surrounding Manchester City’s attacking assets, Manchester United’s stuttering form and the decline of the once near-essential Ben Davies and it becomes clear that we’re at a crossroads.

With this in mind, we’re focusing on our Watchlist rankings at this time – our mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. We begin with our analysis of the current goalkeeper standings.

The Watchlist rankings can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Rob Elliot climbs back to the top of our reckoning as Newcastle United continue to show resilience over a prolonged run of obliging fixtures.

Priced at just 4.2, the Magpies’ number one – who remains the cheapest secure starting option Fantasy Premier League – claimed his third clean sheet of the season in last weekend’s win over Palace.

Impressively, Rafa Benitez’ men have conceded just eight goals – only the two Manchester clubs and Spurs have shipped fewer. They now host Bournemouth and Watford and travel to Burnley and West Brom in the next five, with only a Gameweek 12 visit to Man United proving problematic.

On the downside, the saves seem to have dried up for Elliot – he’s made just three in the last four Gameweeks, despite conceding just four times over that period.

Yet his defenders’ inability to make 30+ passes, along with their three yellow cards, meant that Elliot earned one bonus point in the 1-0 victory over the Eagles, despite not having to make a single save.

It’s worth mentioning Julian Speroni at this point.

He has now started the last two Gameweeks for Crystal Palace as an alternative 4.0 option in FPL. Presumably rested for last night’s EFL Cup tie defeat at Bristol City, he would seem likely to cement his starting berth by returning to the Eagles XI for the visit of West Ham.

Working in tandem with Elliot, he can plug some of the “gaps” in the Magpies keeper’s schedule – offering Everton at home when Elliot makes the trip to Old Trafford and, in Gameweek 15 when Newcastle face a trip to Chelsea, Speroni travels to West Brom.

This new pairing, currently available for a combined 8.2m, could have a marked impact on our approach to goalkeeper spend.

Speroni could also be an option in his own right.

Certainly, aside from a Gameweek 11 trip to Spurs, the outlook looks promising for Roy Hodgson’s side – they offer four strong home fixtures (WHM EVE STK BOU) and trips to Brighton and West Brom in the next seven.

We’ve hesitated to promote Speroni too high in our rankings at this point, awaiting Hodgson’s teamsheet for West Ham’s visit. But, given that Wayne Hennessey shipped four goals at Ashton Gate, we would fully expect the veteran stopper to return and demonstrate that he has now claimed number one duties.

Burnley’s Nick Pope currently sits second behind Elliot in our ladder.

He has been kept exceptionally busy between the sticks since replacing the injured Tom Heaton. Pope has earned seven save points in just six fixtures, with a total of 30 saves ranked fourth among keepers – that’s despite not making an appearance until 36 minutes into Gameweek 4.

Indeed, Pope is making saves and recoveries at a faster rate than any other goalkeeper option since he arrived on the pitch for Sean Dyche’s men.

Before Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Man City, the Clarets had conceded just two goals in Pope’s four starts, and they now have the schedule – particularly at home (NEW SWA WAT STK) – to up that resilience across the upcoming eight Gameweeks.

Trips to Southampton, Bournemouth and Leicester over that period means that Dyche’s side offer strong clean sheet potential right up to Gameweek 18.

Impressively, Pope’s average of 4.7 points per match is ranked third among regular keepers.

Yet both Ben Mee and Stephen Ward offer compelling alternative cover of the Burnley backline in the budget bracket.

Available for 4.5, Mee is joint-top for attempts in the box (nine) from defence, while Ward – at 4.7 – is the second top value defender in terms of points per million on the back of a goal, an assist and seven bonus points.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s Lukasz Fabianski (4.6) remains very much in our thoughts – sitting third in the FPL keeper standings, he’s returned more points (41) than any sub-5.0 stopper.

The Polish international has racked up four clean sheets and eight save points, making more stops (38) than any other number one.

Once this weekend’s trip to the Emirates has passed, Paul Clement’s side have five kind fixtures (BHA bur BOU stk WBA) in six, with only a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea looking too troublesome.

At 4.5, Federico Fernandez is a slightly cheaper alternative and has picked up bonus on three of the four occasions that the Swans have earned a shutout.

We also have to be wary that last night’s injury to Martin Olsson could have two significant knock-ons.

For one, Swansea could become more vulnerable with Angel Rangel likely to come in at right-back, with Kyle Naughton shifting to the left.

However, secondly, Rangel would offer a route into Clement’s backline for just 3.9. That could have an impact on the appeal of Fabianski for this upcoming period.

Brighton stopper Mat Ryan (4.5) has delivered four save points, two bonus and a pair of clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks to take his tally to 33 FPL points. That’s more than any defensive team-mate and just one behind Newcastle’s Elliot.

Chris Hughton’s side now offer three strong home matches (SOT STK CRY) and a trip to Swansea in the upcoming five to keep that run ticking over. Alternatively, the Seagulls’ centre-halves Lewis Dunk (4.4) and Shane Duffy (4.5) sit in the top five defenders for efforts in the box and in the top seven for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

Stoke’s Jack Butland comes in lower down, though it’s fair to say he has some convincing to do after conceding 20 times in the opening nine matches.

Mark Hughes will be hoping that last week’s return of Ryan Shawcross can help steady the ship as the Potters’ prepare for five decent looking fixtures (wat LEI bha cry SWA) in the upcoming six.

Stoke also offer a home/away rotation with Burnley but with Butland setting you back 5.0, Geoff Cameron (4.4) could be the cheapest option after Kevin Wimmer dropped to the bench to accommodate Shawcross.

Further down, Manchester-based pair David De Gea and Ederson are our favoured premium options, offering secure routes into the league’s two tightest defences.

Of the two, the United man has the edge – he has a league-high seven clean sheets and has five save points to Ederson’s one.

Jose Mourinho’s penchant for parking the bus in big matches means he may still prevail against Spurs and Man City in the next two before the fixtures turn in the Red Devils’ favour from Gameweek 12.

Granted, the Phil Jones option is cheaper at 5.3 to 5.6 yet the centre-half’s ongoing injury concerns may be too much hassle for some.

If on a WC tempted to get both. If just one, has to be Salah due to amount of chances he seems to have. Plus, he could be on pens (though nobody knows that for sure, Klopp comment might not have been serious - personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Firmino still took the next one).

On a WC, would you take the plunge on Speroni to save some moolah?

Would have Ryan otherwise, but can have Dunk/Duffy in the back line.

And Duffy worth the extra .1 over Dunk? I'm not sure he is.

Madness to captain Vardy? Its the first GW I don't see a standout option.

At OT with Jones and maybe even Bailly fit I don't see Kane getting more than one. Don't see Liverpool running riot when confident Huddersfield bring their bus. Swansea's bus has been very rigid on the road. Morata looks out of everything and Pep can't be trusted...

I wouldn't trust him. Rather give it to Kane. Morata looked bad but he's had some time to recover and possibly even plays tonight. He's a decent option.

I'm struggling with captaincy as well. Have Kane, Jesus (no) and Hazard. Could get Salah/Coutinho in for Sterling or Sanchez with 2 FTs in hand (see above).

  14. Pep doesn't care about your FPL team
    Ludo
    • 10 Years
    6 years, 6 months ago

There’s a lot of nonsense being talked about Pep on here, and I think most predictions of City’s team for GW10 are being based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how Pep thinks and approaches games. With our focus on FPL, it’s easy to assume that the league is the centre of the universe, and Pep’s priority. That’s just not the case – Pep doesn’t like to draw matches, let alone lose them, and that’s the main reason behind the selection decisions he makes – he picks the team that he thinks gives them the best chance of winning the game in front of him. The League Cup may be a less important competition, but Pep is in no way prioritising the Premier League over the Champions League, at least until their qualification is secured.

City played a 3-5-2 for three of their first four league matches. However, since the Feyenoord game in the Champions League, it’s been a 4-3-3 for ten consecutive matches, and they’ve won every match (if you include last night’s win on penalties). In the Premier League and Champions League, the following players have started all eight matches: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Fernandinho, De Bruyne and David Silva. Mendy started the first three of those at left back, and Delph the five after his injury. The keeper, defence, and midfield three are apparently nailed on, and none of Ederson, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph, Fernandinho, De Bruyne or David Silva started last night. In the League Cup, the likes of Bravo, Mangala, Yaya and Gundogan have started both matches, suggesting that Pep is keeping his first-choice keeper, defenders and midfield trio fresh for the league and Europe.

However, City’s front three has been rotated throughout, as last night, Bernardo Silva, Sterling, Jesus and Aguero all started, and in the previous round of the League Cup, it was Bernardo Silva, Sterling, Jesus and Sane. They do not need to be rested in the League Cup, because unlike the rest of the team, Pep’s attackers are rotated in the Premier League and Champions League. In the past ten matches, when in the squad, Jesus has started 8/10, Sane has started 7/10, Sterling has started 7/10, Aguero has started 6/8, and Bernardo Silva has started 4/10.

If we want to try and guess which three of those will start a given league game, we often look at minutes played in the previous match. It makes sense – as Pep looks to pick the team that gives him the best chance of a win, a player’s freshness will be a factor in that decision. Aguero, Jesus and Sterling started last night, as Jesus and Sterling were fresh after limited minutes at the weekend, and Aguero needs pitch time to get back up to match fitness. However, Aguero and Sterling staying on for 120 minutes had nothing to do with the West Brom game – Pep left the team on the pitch that he thought gave him the best chance of beating Wolves! Aguero signalled to Pep that he wanted to be the fourth player substituted off in extra time, but Pep kept him on for his penalty-taking ability, and he scored the winner in the shoot-out.

Focusing on minutes played often leads to wild misinterpretations of substitutions. A classic example was last week, where Sterling was subbed off first in the Champions League against Napoli, and was widely seen as being a guaranteed starter against Burnley. Pep does not make his changes with your FPL team in mind, unfortunately! Sterling was taken off because he was looking tired, and Napoli were taking the game to City – Bernardo Silva came on to try and give them a greater level of control, not to save him for the weekend. The key is to think about substitutions in the context of THAT game only – not in the context of the next league match.

The main point I’m making, though, is there are a wide range of factors in Pep’s decisions, and minutes played in the previous game is far from being the most important. This makes it very difficult to try and second guess how and when Pep will rotate his front three. There’s a huge amount of risk attached in any move you make based on who you think will start for City – you could easily be wrong, waste a transfer, and miss out on points. City attackers are riding high in the overall points standings, without being nailed on. I think the best tactic is either to go without the front three, instead focusing on KDB, David Silva or the defence, or to accept the surprise benching of your attackers, in return for the explosive returns when they do start – the key is to pick one method and stick with it, rather than flip-flopping between the two.

I've Silva, Jesus and Sterlng but slowly moving to the safe option.

        Silva stays

        Sterling goes

Jesus stays for now - but may become Lukakau in GWK 12, or maybe just stays.

a key for me is competition for places. There are lots of mids vying for my attention so Sterling is now up against high potential scorers who are more nailed.

Jesus isn't really up against anyone at the moment

And while Otamendi is good, there are also other good, cheaper defenders.

Silva can stay as he plays, and provides a steady stream of points.

This is my move too, likely Salah.

I do like the look of Hazard/Sanchez and could see Silva moving out for one of them, if I end up taking a hit. Sanchez captaincy looks strong but I don't think I want to spend that much, and I might not have seen enough of Hazard - even though his fixtures turn very nicely soon

Ludo what are your thoughts on team selection based on opponents. I have started to think that pep sees aguero, jesus, sterling, sane and bilva all as the same player so to speak. it therefore doesn't actually matter what micro tactics he has for games (if at all) , he has purchased and developed them all to be multi functional.
so often in games they move positions when they have been performing well, and I don't just mean they swap wingers when someone isn't getting the better of full back. I think if you analyse their games you would find occasions where all of the above have been moved about.

I think you're right - Aguero or Jesus play broadly speaking as the central striker, with Sane, Sterling or Jesus on the left, and Sterling, Jesus or Bernardo Silva on the right. But as you say, there's a real fluidity to their play, and that means none of them are guaranteed a place.

I think Aguero, Jesus, Sane and Sterling will all start at least two thirds of the time, with Bernardo Silva taking the rest. What I'm saying is that none of them are first choice at the moment - Aguero looks the closest thing to it, but that still remains to be proven.

If none of them are first choice, though Bernardo Silva is slightly lower in the pecking order at the moment, as Pep hasn't had as much time to work with him, then he makes his team selection based whoever he thinks is best placed to make the biggest impact in that particular match - based on form, fitness and whatever else.

That's how I see it also, aguero looks the least flexible and will stay as main striker most of time. Bernie I think should see more starts later in season.
I am still struggling to convince myself that aguero isn't worth the extra over Jesus. Especially now there are a few lower priced mids starting to appear which means I don't need more funds there

Finally someone making sense about Man City!

The one thing I would add though is that Pep (as all managers do) will have to look across a range of games in determining how best to win each one. So last night that meant keeping Sterling and Aguero on. But I would imagine that when he looks at Wolves, West Brom, Napoli and Arsenal he will realise he can't start the same players for all 4 of those games. Now Wolves is out of the way, West Brom seems like the obvious rotation hotspot.

Of course, fatigue is a big factor - but my point was that you can't just reduce things down to minutes played, and ignore everything else. It wouldn't be surprising for Aguero to start, but then come off after 60 minutes, for example - nor would it be really surprising for him to start on the bench.

Great article, finally someone speaking sense on this City team. It amazes me how Aguero and Jesus are being transferred in and out each week in tandem...this week Jesus is the most transferred out!! It's a bizarre pattern which makes me hope for a Jesus hatty on Saturday. I've had both Aguero and Jesus from the start, I don't expect them to play every game but I know that they will score heavy and by the end of the season, expect them to be in the top 5 strikers for fantasy points. I'm a fantasy veteran, I know that 'nailed on' is the golden rule, but the Pep, Aguero, Jesus partnership is the reason for me breaking that rule this season.

I'm not sure many experienced FPL players think minutes played is a major reason to have a player in their team, it's more of a reason not to have them in your team. The best city asset so far this season has been Sane, he has 18.6% ownership however this is more likely because a lot FPL managers have purely gone by his points scored and not considered the fact that when everyone is fit he's more likely to start off the bench with his 55 mins per game.

Without looking at every team if you look at some of the more consistent FPL managers over the last few seasons, the majority of them won't have Sane. Aguero (77), Sterling (68) and Jesus (61) are more prevalent because they believe they have a higher chance of starting and getting more minutes over the next 3-4 game weeks.

It's always been an issue of risk vs reward when choosing players from a team which have a heavy rotation policy. However with Man City producing high amounts of FPL points the carrot is even bigger than ever. Take the risk and get major gains but there will always be the possibility of what happened this week with Sterling & Jesus starting on the bench. Unless you got lucky and had Kane as your VC

You are right, this is how we should look at it

However it's hard as FPL managers have been programmed for years to look at minutes played in terms of who starts or not

        Sterling* Silva Hazard March* Carroll
        Kane Aguero Wood*

        0,1 ITB
        0 FT

Lloris, Sterling, March, Wood -> Speroni, Coutinho, Richarlison & Diouf with 0,4 ITB for a possible Mbemba -> 4.4 next week

Am I crazy? Currently on 510 OP, and my team simply just need some more balance.

Doesn't Diouf play RWB? Cout, Silva, Haz, Rich is a top class mid. Are you playing 4-4-2?

Dno actually 😀 That -hit would allow me to swap between 3-4-3, 4-4-2 and possibly even 3-5-2 at times.

And yes. Hazard, Coutinho, Silva, Richarlison, Kane and Aguero would be a class front 6 😉

Could you do it without Wood-Diouf?

Nope :/ Needed 0,7 more ITB to leave Wood in lineup

Would never transfer more Arsenal in before their set of tough fixtures.

Has Aguero been benched or left out, for a league game this year, whilst he wasn't injured?

Bournemouth was the only one he hasn't started when available I believe.

Am I foolish to stick with Alonso? I could use that cash so well in the midfield, but his fixtures for the long haul look awesome! Please chime in if you feel strongly either way!
        Cheers mates.

Got rid on WC. Chelsea without Kante is much worse.

I’m sticking because of a longer term view on their fixtures, his ceiling once he comes back into form, and in a worst case scenario he does function as a bank to dip into for a double move if needed.

Keep. I've gone Azpi on WC but easy to downgrade later if needed. How long is Kante even out for?

The Injuries tab says a couple more weeks for Kante but tough to really know. There is a sea of easy fixtures coming up so i really want to keep Hazard and Alonso but considering Salah (c) for Hazz this week and using the Alonso cash too. Best of luck to you Benzie.

I would drop to strengthen elsewhere
Monitor and if form improves back in gw 14 , think around there Chelsea have a good run
