Captain Sensible – Gameweek 12

Up next this Friday evening, we turn to our pre-deadline members’ article focusing on the captaincy dilemma for Gameweek ahead.

To kick things off, we analyse the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, then check out the Opta numbers and current Rate My Team (RMT) rankings before suggesting some differentials that could help solve the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Romelu Lukaku leads the way in our Gameweek 12 Captain Poll ahead of Manchester United’s home encounter with Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Despite failing to score in his last seven matches for the Old Trafford outfit, Lukaku has earned the backing of over 27% after returning to the scoresheet with three goals for Belgium over the international break.

He’s scored or assisted in four of five home league fixtures for the Red Devils, averaging 7.2 points per match (ppm) in front of his own supporters.

Harry Kane (20%) and Mohamed Salah (15%) are clearly regarded as his main rivals.

Kane makes his way to Arsenal boasting a fine record on the road. The Spurs frontman has netted twice in each of his last three away appearances and has scored in all five derby league clashes against the Gunners.

Salah, meanwhile, has earned more transfers in than any player in Gameweek 12 (223,000+) after being rested from international duties for Egypt over the break.

Shifted into a central role away to West Ham, he served up a season-high 15 points at the London Stadium – that’s his fifth double-digit return of the season ahead of an Anfield encounter with Southampton.

Further down our poll, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (7%) built on his match-winner against Man United by getting on the scoresheet for his country over the recent break.

The Spaniard also has a fine away record, claiming 28 points in his last three on the road, and is the top transfer target up front ahead of a trip to West Brom – over 162,000 have acquired him since the last deadline passed.

Sergio Aguero’s (5%) away record could profit at Leicester City.

Recovered from his midweek bout of dizziness, the Man City striker has racked up 30 points in his previous three road trips and netted 15 of his 20 league goals on the road last term. However, his minutes at the King Power Stadium are far from assured, despite being declared available by Pep Guardiola earlier on Friday.

Leroy Sane, the top scoring player in FPL, is backed by just 2% despite a run of four double-figure hauls in the last six Gameweeks.

Aside from those six, no other player has earned more than 1% of the votes cast, which suggests that a number of differentials could be worth considering if you are willing to take a punt.

Watford’s Richarlison hosts a West Ham outfit that have conceded more goals (23) than any other side.

Eden Hazard and Sadio Mane (if fit) can emerge as alternatives to team-mates Morata and Salah.

Hazard bagged double-digits in his previous away match at Bournemouth ahead of the West Brom trip. Mane, meanwhile, returned to action with a 10-point tally against the Hammers in Gameweek 11.

Palace’s Wilfried Zaha has netted in both his home appearances since returning from injury and how entertains Everton’s dodgy defence.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick at home to Man City in the corresponding fixture last season.

And Brighton’s Pascal Gross has mirrored Lukaku’s 7.2 ppm at home as Stoke roll up to the Amex Stadium on Monday night.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

How many minutes do you think Jesus gets tomorrow?

My guess is even if he doesn't start he should get 30.....

I need him to feature or in down to 10 players this week after a hit!

Gabriel Jesus has been selected for each and every away match so far this season.

For the people saying Ibra eats into Lukaku's minutes, hasn't mourinho said he wants to see them play together? Also, Ibra has said he is happier to be given the #10 shirt and will be happy to play that role.

With United coming back to full strength can we see a change of system to united to accomodate the new zlatan role?

Maybe he will eat into Lukaku's minutes, maybe he won't. Will have to wait and see - just because he's said he's happy to play 10 doesn't suddenly mean he can't play 9

Don't see that working too well to be quite honest. Ibra isn't mobile enough to be a proper 10.

Didn’t pep say something similar about Kun and Jesus playing together last season?

So maybe half of the time, the other half it’s the better player and that is Ibrahimovic

Jones, Otamendi, Davies and Mbemba in my defence.
Loftus Cheek and King in midfield.
    0 money in the bank.
    What should I do?

    A) Davies > Daniels/Moreno
    B) Otamendi > Daniels/Moreno
    C) Jones > Daniels/Moreno
    D) -4 hit to ensure I have 10/11 players

I think this 'Richarlison only scores away' theory is a red herring .... look at the stats in the above article, he simply scores against teams with really poor defence stats - Bou, Swa, Wba, Eve. In other words, he's a flat track bully.
The exception was he didn't score against Stoke, I didn't see the match, maybe they just successfully parked the bus?
On sunday he's playing the team with the worst defensive stats in the league .... Richarlison (C) ?

      • 8 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

The 'new manager' effect is a worry. Watford seem a bit usettled with Silva likely to leave sooner than later as well.

Mind you, Richarlison is a great pick - however, I'm not sure if he's worth giving the armband to when there are so many other fantastic options this weekend.

Considered up to -16 in hits ! :O This IB made me crazy..

Now I've just settled using my FT: Mbemba -> Lowton

    Speroni
    Jones, Aké, Lowton
    Salah, Silva, Hazard, Richarlison
    Kane, Agüero, Calvert-Lewin

    (Elliot, Monreal, Carroll, Lascelles)

Do i need to take a -4 hit? The problem is that I will most likely field Monreal due to Jones injury, and only one of Agüero, Hazard & Calvert-Lewin can miss out completely to field 11 players..

    Any wise advise?

WC looking like a success before the GW even started.

Jones, Lascelles, Atsu all injured and out. Also got rid of Foster, Myhill, Carroll, Long and Bertrand. Buzzing, bring it on!

So jones is out if i understand correctly. The question now whether he will be a starter again when he returns or others take this place. I would love to know this, currently have him, kola, ota, ward and non playing long. 0 ft but if jones is out long term maybe that would justify a hit to change him.

My awful defence at moment. Should I get rid bavies and Suttner.

    Kolasinic/Yoshida/bavies/Suttner /long

I have one (long) who never plays and two who get rotated. As if both don't play il be left with 2 defenders. Is bavies still a rotational threat? Suttner also hardly plays. Get rid of both or Suttner only. Have 2FT

    1. AttackAttackAttack

I'd get rid of Davies and save the aggro of will he won't he play. He came on in the 90th last game even with Toby out. You need a Burnley defender in there which would also free up over a mil.

    a) Niasse (seriously tempted, although he's not great away and has cry and sot next)
    b) Murray (obviously the form pick, but put off by United away next gw)
    c) Callum Wilson (tempted here too - only played one match but fit and could well find form in a nice run of fixtures)
