Scout Notes – Austin Builds His Case

Another goal confirms a Southampton striker as a potential festive differential, while an Arsenal super-sub stakes another claim for starts in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

Four goals from just three starts – and five for the season from a mere 399 minutes of pitch-time – has elevated the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) stock of Southampton’s Charlie Austin.

The forward opened the scoring against Arsenal today to continue his purple patch, but it is a run of form that has passed most of us by.

Priced at 6.1, he is owned by just 1.8% of FPL managers and only 41,000+ drafted him in for Gameweek 16.

Austin’s less than illustrious history of injuries and the Saints taxing festive schedule have clearly dissuaded more from investing, but over the next six Gameweeks, he has three strong home fixtures (LEI HUD CRY).

They are counterbalanced by a trio of brutal road trips (che tot mun), although coach Mauricio Pellegrino has tended to start away matches with the more mobile Shane Long as the lone striker anyway.

For managers with adaptable squads, Austin could be used as a budget third striker when the fixtures fall in his favour as Pellegrino seems likely to keep his striker in reserve for the key St Mary’s matches.

He is currently the fourth most popular signing ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, already claiming over 21,000 new owners following today’s seven points.

Meanwhile, the coach’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation helped Dusan Tadic prosper as well.

The midfielder supplied the assist for Austin’s goal to go joint-top with Son Heung-min for big chances created (three) in Gameweek 16.

The Serbian now has a goal and two assists from his last three starts and, with just 1.8% ownership, is another to track while the Saints enjoy this spell of form.

Giroud pushing for a start

Arsenal’s much-vaunted ‘big three’ of Alexandre Lacazette, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil now have just one goal and an assist between them from the last two Gameweeks.

Sanchez set up today’s equaliser, the fourth time in five matches he’s delivered points, but it was Olivier Giroud who scored it – his third goal in as many Gameweeks, and all of them from the subs bench.

The big Frenchman might not have the mobility of his compatriot Lacazette, but he’s now scored four goals from a mere 253 minutes of action this season.

With rotation inevitable from now until the New Year, Giroud is building a strong case for the starts that have so far been denied him this season.

The Gunners certainly have a good set of fixtures to come, with West Ham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and West Brom in four of the next five Gameweeks.

Another in fine form is Aaron Ramsey, who was brought in by 203,000+ for Gameweek 16, only to blank for just the second time in eight Gameweeks.

It wasn’t for the lack of trying, however, as he had more shots (four), efforts in the box (three) and attempts on target (three) than any team-mate.

But he is now an injury doubt for Wednesday’s trip to West Ham, as Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match.

“Aaron Ramsey couldn’t play at the end. He had a hamstring problem.”

Defence missing Mustafi

At the back, Arsenal continue to struggle when Shkodran Mustafi is absent from the line-up.

The German missed today’s encounter with a knock and the Gunners promptly failed to keep a clean sheet as a result.

In fact, all seven of the shut-outs they’ve managed this season have come when Mustafi has played the full 90 minutes.  His injury issues have kept him to just nine starts, however.

That’s clearly having a knock-on effect for FPL managers with Arsenal defenders in their squads, with Sead Kolasinac (15.8%) the most popular.

The Bosnian was drafted in by 81,043 this week, but his lack of returns on the road continued – only 18 of his 74 points have come away from home.

His frustrated FPL followers might now need to take note that three of Arsenal’s next five matches are away from the Emirates.

Hi Fellas, how does my team looking for GW17.
    Pope
    Mee / Kolasinac / Otamendi / Kiko
    Hazard / Sane / Salah
    Kane / Morata / DCL

    Subs: Gross/ Carroll / Mbemba
Thinking of doing Gross > Shaqiri if either kiko or mee doesn't make it. Thoughts?

    Dear Mark & The Team,

Firstly this site is a great concept in principle and in an ideal world would operate without any issues. Without wishing to be over critical I believe that this afternoon the quality of the posts on here has sunk to an all time low. Have you never wondered why any of the long standing original members who made valuable contributions no longer appear on here? Is this because the emphasis on chasing sponsorship and the obessiion with income generation with a view to a future sale has become all consuming ? Don't get me wrong I understand that people who don't adhere to general t & c 's should face the consequences but what about those that make no valuable contribution whatsoever with LOL and OMG comments , stupid predictions based on nothing whatsoever and wishing injury on a player ? There appears to be little or no sanction against these individuals and I strongly think that if there was the volume of traffic on this site on match day would increase significantly.

What a bizarre post. This site has a forum, and with an ever increasing traffic due to its popularity, the more idiots you will get posting troll comments (just read the BBC sport website for an example). Are you suggesting that an increase in trolling comments is somehow being condoned by the FFS team? Because that what you seem to be alluding to. Tell me exactly how you would police this site? Baring in mind there are thousands of posts during a match day? Why not offer up some actual ideas.

Hi Slouch. I'd like to respond to this in full but Sunday is my one day where I should be spending more time with my family.

As a quick response, I think it's very unfair to judge the site on matchday - we've always seen a mad, manic set of comments on matchday and attemtping to moderating it is a major task. But many comments made on matchday are throwaway and disposable and, I believe accepted as that.

However, if you don't mind, I'll respond via email when I have more time. I'd like to do this because you've posted very similar posts before in the past, so I think I'd like to address this with you so you don't feel the need to keep doing so and can raise concerns with me personally. Thanks.

Yes the comments are disposable Mark but they’re coming from the same accounts and the same people and that’s the problem. Some accounts are purely out to troll other FFS members who value FPL very highly like yourself.

Of course the traffic is manic on matchdays but is it possible to somehow limit posts to a certain number or totally block accounts that SPAM the same repetitive rubbish every GWK?

Sure. Well take it from me we do react on mathdays to all abuse reports. I personally moderated a user yesterday for pre-match stuff that crossed the line. So with comments moving fast, I have to rely on reports to alert me to stuff and we then investigate.

However, like I say, this is nothing new. The site is a very different place on matchday and its been that way for years and years. Comments moving fast, lots of lol@ posts. Some fake goal shouts etc. We've always had those and we act on persistent offenders.

We do try to clamp down on it but I also think that those who frequent the site on matchday know have learned that it moves fast and such comments are ignored. Like I say, judging the site on some of the Saturday/Sunday comments is difficult, it's a very different atmosphere and environment.

That’s great that you’re clamping down on the abuse and I’m sure everyone is thankful for that. I do realise that it’s hard to moderate when there’s hundreds of posts being posted in the space of a few minutes.

Is it possible though for a new feature to be implemented on the site where you can follow your favourite posters, thus, eliminating all other posts you don’t want to see? A bit like a twitter feed/ Facebook feed.

I’m sure I’ve seen this argument presented before and was just wondering whether you and the coders of the site have considered this idea?

I say this because surely as FPL is getting more popular, pages are going to be moving faster and it has to cap at some point where there has to be a follower/ following system.

I appreciate that this is a difficult issue Mark but there are some non constructive serial offenders ( some of whom have commented above ) who generally just piss people off and add nothing whatsoever. Flagging them is useless as they aren't actually contravening t & c's but they are allowed to just continue posting their stream of shite. You know who they are .

so u want me (or posters like me) banned not becuase im not actually violating any T&Cs but u just don't agree with or like what i post so it's automatically a "stream of shite". yeah fair enough

No , you're making a comment based on your perceived assumptions and not facts. I would never criticise anyone for having a different opinion to myself based on simple fact but when it comes down to a torrent of nonsense that adds nothing and is not the slightest bit amusing then that's a different matter.

Thanks Mark. I am only trying to be constructive and make this a better place for all. I fully appreciate all your efforts but with respect this is your business , your cash cow and as a fellow business owner your full time responsibility.

      Kind of pointless now Slouch.
If Mark, Granville and the posters who made this place including the ones that became mods don't post or spend ant time on here then that should really tell you who the mugs are?
Bit like building a great brand over the years but never wearing the gear you sell as you know it's a crap product now produced to satisfy your non-discerning new customer but your new punter doesn't give a s*** because it's got your name on it.
This isn't a simple criticism and pointing fingers , it's more of an observation.
Things change and not always for the best but that's a personal view and sometimes you have to look at what you want yourself and maybe it's just not for you anymore, clearly many many others have come to that conclusion.
Bit like staring at your Bobby Moore picture or watching re-runs of Jim Baxter playing keepy uppy at Wembley.......
Time to move on I guess.

Who has the higher ceiling out of Hazard (Huddersfield) or Salah(WBA) midweek in your opinion? Not got too much confidence in a Kane captaincy v an in general measly Brighton defence

Got taken off at 66 mins so my thoughts would be that Mane who played 90 mins in the CL and today would be the one rested with a front 3 of Salah, Firmino and Coutinho/the Ox

Chelsea unexpected loss against westham means Hazard and Morata should start against huddersfeild right ?

Both are vital for chelsea in their attack and they need to bounce back strongly.

Really dropped rank past 4 gws. Would really appreciate advice on the squad and the moves I plan for midweek:

    Lloris - Elliot
    Daniels - Bellerin - Alonso - Maguire - Mariappa
    Salah - Hazard - Richarlison - Surman - Carrick
    Kane - Morata - Wilson

    Transfer plan:
    A) Alonso and Wilson >> Firmino and Kenny (-4)
    B) Wilson >> DCL (ft)

After his performance at the weekend and now on 4 yellows I do not see him starting midweek.

    Thoughts?
