Scout Notes – Ward the Latest Clarets Casualty

Burnley grind out a victory over Stoke City to climb to the heady heights of fourth in the table, but the night is tainted for over 1.4 million Fantasy managers as Stephen Ward departs with an injury and just a single point.

Ward is the most owned defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as part of over 24.5% squads. However, he was forced off after 40 minutes of the 1-0 win over the Potters having suffered a knock to his knee.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche offered no prognosis on the setback, with Ward having to wait for the swelling to reduce before there is any clarity on the damage sustained.

It meant that the left-back joined both Ben Mee and Matt Lowton in missing out on another Burnley clean sheet.

Mee – himself owned by 681,000 FPL managers – just missed out on Tuesday night, with Dyche showing caution on the centre-back’s gashed knee. It seems very likely that he will make a return for the Gameweek 18 trip to Brighton.

Lowton, who boasts a more modest ownership of 158,000, is back training and could also be in line to return at the Amex Stadium.

But, for on Tuesday, it was left to James Tarkowski and Nick Pope to profit from another determined display.

The former is currently the top transfer target following a fifth clean sheet in eight Gameweeks. However, Tarkowski lost out to both the goal scorer Ashley Barnes and fellow centre-back Kevin Long, when it came to bonus points.

Long – who has deputised in Mee’s absence – managed to edge out Tarkowski in the Bonus Points System (BPS) by virtue of completing 73% of his passes, compared with his team-mate’s 67%. That ultimately decided the bonus split.

Pope Back Among The Bonus

But it was goalkeeper Nick Pope who again stood out.

He pulled off seven saves on the night, having made that many stops in his previous five Gameweeks.

Together with 13 recoveries, and the fact that Long was the only member of the back four to gain BPS from pass completion, Pope cruised to the maximum three bonus points.

That took him to 12 in total, more than any other keeper and also more than top ranked defender Cesar Azpilicueta, who has 11.

Incredibly, Pope has delivered those 12 bonus points from just 13 starts, a spell which also includes seven clean sheets and ten points from saves.

Burnley’s fixtures following the Brighton trip turn against them rather viciously.

The Clarets will face Spurs at Turf Moor and Manchester United at Old Trafford immediately after the Seagulls visit. Matches with Liverpool – and United again – follow over the subsequent four Gameweeks.

Relying on a Burnley defender over that spell carries obvious risk, with a rotation option advised.

However, Pope could well remain profitable in tougher fixtures, given his propensity for saves points.

Choupo-Moting on the timber

Stoke City changed their shape following the 5-1 hammering at Spurs, with manager Mark Hughes deploying a back four.

Mame Biram Diouf lined up with Peter Crouch in a front two and, more significantly perhaps, it meant no place for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Part of 254,000+ squads, the Cameroon international had failed to produce a goal or an assist in his last four Gameweeks and, having been withdrawn early in two of the previous three outings, the writing was perhaps on the wall.

He saw just six minutes of action at Turf Moor and his owners must now hope that he can claim a recall for the Gameweek 18 visit of West Ham.

Hughes brought in Ramadan Sobhi to play on the left flank, with Xherdan Shaqiri on the right and the fit-again Geoff Cameron playing behind him at full-back.

After an improved performance and with the Hammers clash arguably a must-win for Stoke, it remains to be seen if Hughes alters his line-up.

He looks likely to be forced to make one change, with Kurt Zouma departing with a hamstring injury on the hour-mark at Turf Moor.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A) How likely will Morata, Ramsey and Salah drop or rise again before Saturday's deadline???

    B) How likely Mee and Lowton to start next game???

After Chelsea performance last night with 3 up top' I see no reason why Morata will play.

Theres very few games Chelsea can get away with not playing a proper number 9 in the premier league. I doubt he'll be rested when he's fit.

If you watched the game, you'll clearly see how we cannot maintain Hazard playing as a false 9. Against Huddersfield, yes, but not against any quality side.

Eddie was pealing off deep to the left and right quite often, leaving nothing in the centre to Target/hold up play.

Putting Morata's other strengths aside, the guy is so good aerially and that makes him essential to this Chelsea side. Furthermore, Willian and Pedro haven't got the consistency right now.

If you see no reason why Morata will play then you need to give your head a wobble.

Pope i think is ok to leave if having, more uncertain about defenders, as they don´t do much offensively. I have ward and was hoping for another rise as would have happened if he wasn´t injured and contemplating to leave the Burnley train. Also i think Ward has leapt to the highest possible stage of rising, can´t see him rising more.

More than anyone he always seems to haul when you don't have him and blank when you do. You have to keep him over a long period and even it out over a number of games. I've had him since my GW8 WC and I'm pretty happy. Last year was relatively simple, only captain him at home, this year he has hauled away and blanked at home. It's much trickier to predict the games to captain him on.

What do I do with Jesus guys? Front line is:

    Haz \ Salah \ Son \ Richarlison \ L. Cook
    Kane \ Jesus \ Niasse

I was thinking Jesus --> DCL, that provides funds for Cook --> D Silva, and hits two birds with one stone in having both Everton strikers AND having a (mostly) nailed City attacker - very important for a heavy Christmas schedule and rotation.

Fixture wise your defense looks rather ok, bordering to exceptionally good. Mariappa and Zanka are cheap but have good fixtures and Kenny has some good too. Pope could be argued having a shift in fixtures, but as a goalie that could at least give you lots of save points.

Hmm ok thank you. Feels like I am lacking a more nailed defender than Mariappa. Happy with Son but easy downgrade to Rich if he keeps getting rotated. Son is more a punt. Feel like Austin would be better than DCL

Rich I think could be ok... Ward walked off but early indication is the swelling is quite bad so whether he's good for the weekend im not sure. I swapped for Christensen last night and did Daniels to Kenny for a -4 as I think going forward it's worth the hit long term but may backfire

as long as he is fit he is the prefered striker. He is a poacher and suited to play the way they play, but one would think Pellegrino is looking for another striker in january, as Austin is so injury prone and the other is useless. Underrated striker, he is clinical in the box, compared to the other englands strikers (including Kane) he is the most accurate finisher. And while he is not gifted with pace nor very mobile, he is clever in his moves and contrary to the common view i think his technique is efficient, he has that nack of knowing how and when to hit the ball when given the chance itb. If fit he is the perfect third striker in Englands WC squad.

Speroni is more likely to take their penalties than Benteke

    Bournemouth's next four...

    Man Utd (a) 13/12 (GW 17)
    Liverpool (h) 17/12 (GW 18)
    Chelsea (a) 20/12 (League Cup)
    Man City (a) 23/12 (GW 19)

    Ten days of hell.

I was struggling for a GW 19 captain - think I now need to bring in a City attacking option, probably Sterling as he always scores against them.

If I can play Dunk over Ward at the weekend should I hold fire? No playing defender subs though (Zeegelaar the other).

Was thinking Rich > Shaqiri instead

Sometimes I question whether Mark has a crystal ball and knew that Ward would get injured and that Christensen would come off before Chelsea conceded. Mark if you read this is there a Crystal Ball members package coming soon at all?

          Lol. Classic.
Mark should make an entrance with a silly walk on the scout cast tonight.

That would make my week! And most certainly make up for how the GW has gone so far! All hope riding on Son and Kane (C) now

Given that I have Pope, is it the right time for Ward cash in? 3 or max 4 CS I can think of here.

Lacazette plays 70 minutes average per match, Morata gets injured and off the boil in several matches, Jesus and Aguero sharing duties, Lukaku is a very limited striker in a team that plays in a way which doesn´t suit him.

What a mess of 10m marker strikers... and what do i do? Rooney and Rashford...

Feels like every player except Salah has a troll-mode this season. The good players rotate. The average players are average. Quite hard to navigate through this season especially over this period.

Is it likely aurier and rose play instead of Trippier and Davies?

Why Kiko Femenia is still flagged injured? He played last night, but did he pick another injury?

I think so, he came off again just before the end.

    Current front three:

    Kane, Firmino, Niasse with 2.8itb.

    Best option:

    A) Firmino + Niasse to Morata and DCL
    B) Niasse to Rooney
    C) Firmino + Niasse to Lukaku and DCL
    D) Niasse to DCL.
