Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Alonso Strikes As Morata Misses Out

Chelsea labour to a victory thanks to a goal from one of last season’s undoubted stars, while Arsenal are equally lacklustre, though Mesut Ozil ensures they scrape past struggling Newcastle.

After a quiet start to the season – by his own standards, at least – Marcos Alonso is at last delivering in the final third.

The wing-back produced attacking returns in just two of the first 16 Gameweeks, but has supplied an assist and now a goal from his last two outings. Impressively, he fired six shots at Stamford Bridge against Southampton.

Add in a clean sheet and maximum bonus in the 1-0 win over the Saints and his 15.5% ownership have seen their man overtake Cesar Azpilicueta at the top of Chelsea’s defender standings.

He is also the only Blues player to have started every league match this season and seems to have little competition at left wing-back to break that run.

Alonso’s ownership increased by just over 14,000 for Gameweek 18, while Eden Hazard also enjoyed a modest profit, gaining another 26,000 managers.

But the Belgian was captained by nearly 350,000 (6.3%), only to underwhelm from the false nine role that he has had to take on in the absence of Alvaro Morata.

Hazard earned an assist from the foul which led to Alonso’s free-kick winner, but he lacked a goal threat himself – mustering just one attempt.

Morata, meanwhile, was sold by 253,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline, and the 1.2 million who stuck by him were treated to just a 17-minute appearance from the bench.

That at least confirmed his recovery from a back injury, and Chelsea’s lack of a cutting edge – they had 24 shots but not a single big chance – would seem to make his recall at Everton in Gameweek 19 more than likely.

Antonio Conte’s selection decisions for the midweek EFL Cup quarter-final tie with Bournemouth will offer us further clues. Morata is one booking shy of a ban so will likely sit that one out, leaving him fresh for the Goodison Park trip.

The same situation applied to Alonso until his convenient yellow card for time wasting late on meant that he now misses the midweek tie, leaving him free to continue his ever-present Gameweek record.

Christensen favoured again

Chelsea ended a run of three without a clean sheet, although Andreas Christenseen earned back to back shut-out points following his timely withdrawal before Huddersfield’s late goal on Tuesday.

Priced at 5.6, the Dane also picked up two bonus points, surpassing Bonus Point System (BPS) darling Azpilicueta to underline his potential once again.

The Spaniard, Gary Cahill and Victor Moses all gained a single bonus point, while Hazard missed out having been tackled three times.

Previously a classic ‘fire and forget’ option, Azpilicueta has now suffered sales, albeit minor ones, for three consecutive Gameweeks. His 6.9 price tag appears to be struggling to compete with Alonso’s added attacking threat and Christensen as a budget-friendly alternative.

Kolasinac remains on the bench

Arsenal scraped past a spirited Newcastle United, but there was no clean sheet joy for Sead Kolasinac’s 15.4% ownership.

The Bosnian was benched for the second match in a row as FPL midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles (4.5) was again preferred on the left of a flat back four by Arsene Wenger.

Kolasinac has produced an impressive 7.25 points per match at the Emirates but missed out on Arsenal’s ninth clean sheet of the campaign – a tally that’s ranked second only to Man United.

FPL managers have reacted promptly, already making him the most sold player ahead of Gameweek 19 when the Gunners entertain Liverpool.

Slim pickings in Gunners attack

Mesut Ozil hit the winner against the Magpies as the other members of Arsenal’s ‘big three’ failed to deliver.

What looked to be a favourable home fixture had persuaded more than 174,000 of Alexandre Lacazette’s 11.0% ownership to hand him the armband.

He promptly blanked and now has just two goals from his last seven appearances, although one of those was an eight-minute run-out on Wednesday.

Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, has managed only one assist from his last four starts. That, and his 11.8 price tag, continue to deter managers from boosting his 2.9% ownership.

Ozil is similarly sparsely-owned and it seems we must await the return of Aaron Ramsey – a relative snip at 7.1 – before we can consider the Gunners’ inconsistent attacking options.

Elliot back for the Magpies

Rafa Benitez brought the 23.6%-owned Rob Elliot in from the cold of a four-Gameweek exile as Karl Darlow dropped back to the bench at the Emirates.

Elliot has remained the second most popular goalkeeper in FPL during his enforced rest, his 4.1 price tag too convenient for all but 138,000+ managers who felt compelled to replace him since his Gameweek 14 demotion.

For those who have remained loyal, Elliot offers a mixed schedule (whu MCI BHA stk SWA mci).

He also produces minimal save points – he’s not made more than four stops in a single match this season – and Newcastle’s defence have kept just three clean sheets, and none since Gameweek 9.

But at that price, his 1.3 million managers will just be relieved to have another active member of their squad again, and one who managed a solid three points from a daunting trip to Arsenal.

Ogbonna if you're a dullard. Masuaku if you like to gamble. I'm going masuaku cause i think Moyes won't change his formation after 3 CS in a row and therefore Creswell will play with Masuaku, not instead of.

Aiming for this squad in GW22:
    Adrian (Speroni)
    Masuaku Jones Gomez (Chilwell/Kenny)
    KdB Salah Sterling Arnautovic (Richarlison)
    Kane Morata Llorente

Llorente only for that GW and to afford this team. Downgrade > austin after.

Watched the second half of the city game today. He could have quite easily scored 5 in that half if it was another day. By far the most dangerous city player, he's hanging around in the box way more than anyone else. With how nailed on he seems to be there has to be no reason not to have him other than being stuck with 3 other city players.

I'd love to get Sterling in, but with already owning D.Silva I can't see a reason myself to get him in. Both will score points in different games, you've just got to be patient when you hold a City mid, the points will come.

Won't change midfield and attack unless injuries happen. What would you do with this defence with 2 FTs and 0.4 ITB:

    Gomes Speroni
    Otamendi Christensen Dann Duffy Mee

I'm considering Dann->Ogbonna tonight which leaves exact money for Mee->Jones later in the week if I want to. Or would you rather do Gomes->Adrian and save the other transfer?

What do you think of a strategy of 3-5-2 with both DCL and Niasse in the squad? If one is out, one will surely play, right? Easy to have amazing midfield with those two 5m forwards! Slurp!

    1. Klopptomist Scott Jelly
      • 6 Years

Problem is knowing which one will play then. You don't want one with a 1pt cameo blocking the other with a 12 point haul

            • 11 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, maybe, but one would think DCL would play most of the games, or if the preference of the manager turned, then the otherway round, anyway, that's not even a problem to me as you'd have amazing midfield anyway, and the situation would be like with Aguero/Jesus, or likely not even as bad, only for half the money...

Sometimes you just have a great bench score, that's unavoidable, so the argument "You don't want one with a 1pt cameo blocking the other with a 12 point haul" is bad one in my opinion.... It will happen anyway...

      2. My Name Is Prince
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Well I could have had an amazing midfield instead of Kane or Morata this week, for instance... I already had Kane's and/or Morata's 1pt blocking a 12 point Sterling haul! You're argument, hence, is invalid!

Have Richarlison and Kabasele. Watford have the fixtures... but as we know form is more important... do you think in the next 5-6 matches they will come good in their nice fixtures or start thinking about replacements?

I think Watford hit rock bottom and from now on they will get better. Richarlison only needs to be more eficient in finishing opportunities so I wouldn´t sell him also because his price is too good to reject.

But Watford defence looks poor so I would sell Kabasele for Masuaku or Kenny.

Unlucky or lack of skill? Genuinely interested to get someone’s opinion on this.

I guess it’s the latter since luck evens out over time, while I’m heading towards the sixth or seventh red arrow in a row (unless Salah is benched, I get Dunk’s 8 points from the bench and Coutinho scores a few).

Thanks, TM! Would you agree if I went with that? Before the match I couldn’t see much wrong with my starters.

You had reasons to play the defenders. Should have used the bench boost 🙂

I wondered about benching Otamendi for Dunk, but that seemed so wrong. It’ll be interesting to see if I get more than 23 point in my bench boost double gameweek team.

Coutinho (have Salah) and Maguire to City mid (currently have none) and better defender for my two free transfers, you reckon?

Think of it this way - you'll always have to bench someone

Thanks, Snazzy! I don’t have a problem with benching points, but there seems to something fundamentally wrong with my selection of players, although I can’t seem to find it.

        Current squad:
        Pope / Elliot
        Otamendi / Maguire / Tarkowski / Dunk / Ogbonna
        Hazard / Salah / Coutinho / Richarlison / Loftus-Cheek
        Kane / Morata / Calvert-Lewin

With two free transfers, it seems obvious to downgrade Coutinho to a City mid and upgrade Maguire to someone better, but iI’m not sure how much that’ll help.

I think you went for the obvious. Palace and Stoke played away and Brighton played with Burnley with great form. Maybe you should let the obvious behind and go for your instinct!

Depends who did you bench your bench for?

Benched them for Otamendi, Maguire (Palace at home), Tarkowski (good choice, however) and Richarlison (in addition to to forwards and premium mids).

Luck evens out over a longer time. It's possible to make the right sub choices based on all the available data but still end up with the wrong choice for 6 weeks in a row. Do 60 weeks in a row and it'll start to even out.

Thoughts on captaining Sane next weekend?
I don't have any other City players, and I don't think it would be wise to use a transfer to swap out Eriksen or Sane for KDB

Sane to Sterling and captain him. That's what I'm thinking. He could've scored 4 today

Ogbonna to rise, grab him tonight or be happy and just sit tight and have the option of Masuaku at the same price?

Feel Mas is flattering to deceive and og will be the baps darling

I prefer Masuaku because of his attacking attributes, and that he is probably the most nailed of the 2 with the form he's in. Could've had an assist today, but that's not to say Ogbonna is a bad option.

Interesting, I’ll have a comparison on the members area and see how it comes out.

I test looks good but the baseline is where it matters

Ahh interesting. I guess I’m trying to figure a way that Mas doesn’t fit into the team if the system changes whereas Og might.

        I’ll hold and await, thanks

Sterling. He surely gets the rest midweek and is effectively a striker based on today’s showing.

You'd think so, but pep still so unpredictable. Guess we'll just have to base our pick off midweeks selections.

          He’s started 8 in a row so I’d rested midweek, I’d say we’re okay.
