Scout Notes – Sterling Back On Goal Trail

Raheem Sterling’s two goals put pay to any Tottenham Hotspur challenge at the Etihad Stadium, as Pep Guardiola’s charges overcame the absence of playmaker David Silva with another outstanding attacking display.

Sterling’s brace in a 4-1 victory masked a mixed evening’s work for the winger, who really should have had at least a hat-trick. His six efforts on goal arrived via four big chances, two of which went begging.

But Sterling’s 1.1 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners will still be more than happy with a 12-point return, if not the fact that his prolifigacy cost the winger bonus points.

Sterling has now produced 11 goals, with Fantasy returns in seven of his last ten appearances. Perhaps more crucially, he has been named in Guardiola’s starting line-up in nine of the last ten matches in all competitions, including the previous eight Gameweeks.

Sterling would seem likely to get a rest in the EFL Cup tie with Leicester City in midweek, setting him up for another start against Bournemouth in Gameweek 19.

In his current form – and with captaincy options limited by the fixtures – Sterling now becomes a serious armband candidate.

A goal every 109.8 minutes is an extraordinary record for a midfield option. He is second only to Mohamed Salah over the season for that metric, along with FPL’s points per match statistic over the season (7.0 vs 7.5) before the Egyptian’s run-out at Bournemouth today.

Sterling is currently the most bought FPL player ahead of Gameweek 19, with his price peaking at a season-high 8.4

De Bruyne charges on

While Sterling continues to deliver, Kevin De Bruyne maintained his steep ascent as a Fantasy asset.

The Belgian’s goal output has increased considerably, with Saturday’s strike his fifth in eight Gameweeks. He’s now delivered back-to-back double-digit scores, with five for the season as a whole.

Sealing the three bonus points, De Bruyne is now giving chase to Salah at the top of the FPL midfield standings on 113, with Sterling (112) and Silva (102) making up three of the top four.

Leroy Sane (95) trails that trio of team-mates, but revived his Fantasy stock with a pair of assists on Saturday. That represented his first attacking returns since Gameweek 11, though he is still without a goal since a strike at The Hawthorns back in Gameweek 10.

Along with Sterling, it is De Bruyne who is tempting investment as the second most bought player ahead of Gameweek 19 so far.

There’s no question that sales of David Silva are fuelling those trades.

The Spaniard was the most popular transfer target heading into Saturday’s deadline, finding his way into 278,000 new squads.

But he was absent from City’s teamsheet due to personal reasons, which currently remain unexplained.

There were tributes made to Silva from the City players during and after Saturday’s win, and we can only wait on more information and hope that all is well with him and his loved ones.

City Strikers fade out

The fact that a mention of Man City’s strikers is now almost an afterthought underlines just how their midfield has overpowered both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Silva as assets.

Saturday did little to change that situation.

A disgruntled Aguero was hooked before the hour mark as his job share with Jesus continued. The Brazilian was introduced, only to miss a penalty kick to deliver a -1 return.

Jesus is without a goal in his last five Gameweek appearances, while Aguero boasts two over the same time frame. However, that is dwarfed by the rates currently being achieved by Sterling and De Bruyne.

Kane escapes for abject Spurs

Harry Kane’s failure to register points at the Etihad was perhaps no surprise.

However, his agricultural challenge on Sterling that could, and should, have earned a straight red card certainly was.

The striker was booked and must now avoid a caution at Burnley in Gameweek 19 to avoid a one-match ban.

Kane lost over 93,000 in ownership ahead of Saturday’s match.

But despite another single point return, sales have currently slowed ahead of the Turf Moor trip. He’s showing a net loss of just over 4,000 at the time of writing.

That reflects a market distracted by movement in midfield and also the fact that there remains no convincing option to replace the Spurs striker.

With Alvaro Morata restricted to an appearance from the bench in Gameweek 18, it will likely take points from Romelu Lukaku or Roberto Firmino to push Kane’s owners to the exit.

Elsewhere for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, Christian Eriksen maintained his recent revival with a consolation goal.

The Dane has now returned two goals and two assists over his last four Gameweeks to keep Son Heung-min at bay as the weapon of choice in the Spurs midfield.

Son did, however, start a fourth successive league outing and has now missed just two of the last 11 Gameweeks.

In defence, Pochettino opted to hand Danny Rose back-to-back league starts for the first time this season, with Ben Davies left on the bench until the 90th minute.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does anyone else feel like it's NOT too late to axe Kane for the next three? I get the impression on here and Twitter that we've missed the boat now... but I might do it.

Burnley next. They've only conceded three goals in nine home PL games this season. All three goals were single goals in separate matches.

Then Southampton. They've got the sixth best record for away goals conceded in the PL this season, even after the 3-0 blip at Anfield. Since Anfield, they frustrated Man City for most of the game at The Etihad and did well yesterday at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea needed a free-kick to get through them.

Then, of course, it's the blank GW.

Downgrade him to a TBC striker and upgrade Richarlison to KDB looks incredibly tempting to me. KDB could and should avoid rotation for Bournemouth at home, Newcastle away and Palace away.

    Thoughts?

If you ask the majority, they will definitely advise you against it.

Axe if you feel it's the right move and bring him back if needed for the double gameweek. We're on our own at the end of the day.

The issue is, and always has been, who to get in?!

Also you're compounding that with losing Richarlison. Fine, KDB is a better option. But for 3 weeks, I'd be a little worried Richarlison would do as well/better.

      Maybe after the double

I've always given too much weight to the fixtures. Watford's next three are outrageously good, but there's an argument to say they're one of the worst teams in the league right now.

For me Kane is the best option of any striker available. Consistent over the past two seasons.

So I’m keeping him for the season, barring serious injury of course.

He’s the top scoring PL striker (behind only Salah)

Lukaku has dried up, Aguero/Jesus have rotation nightmare, and even when they play aren’t returning much....Morata, yes doing well, but still less goals than Kane this season.

Budget options are even more inconsistent...Austin, Abraham, Vardy, Wilson....no one obvious there.

Yes but you said consistent.. he's been far from it. He may be top scoring but it's been mini explosions followed by many blanks.. I'm sold on ditching until gw22 will then trade him back in for morata who has arsenal away

I think once you upgrade to KDB and get rid of Kane you’ll struggle to Kane back in. If you don’t think you’ll want again then that’s fine. But you will. That’s the reason I don’t sell Kane. First of all I’ve held since GW1 so will only get 12.7 for him and probably have to pay 12.9 to get back and I know at any time he can punish me. Just not as consistent as previous seasons. It’s easy to say keep money ITB too but what’s the point of freeing up cash just not to spend it? What are the better forward options than Kane?

Of course, as you hint at, this is all group think to a degree and it’s documented how people will go along with what others are doing even if they think it’s wrong!

My worst transfer of the season so far:
Decided to upgrade one of my Palace keepers as I was sure they'd concede vs Leicester. Deliberated over Ryan and Gomes eventually going for Gomes due to fixtures. Ryan puts in a motm 11pt haul, Palace keep out an in-form Leicester, while Gomes let's in 4 against a team that's not scored away since day 1 of the season.

    Save to say that failed...

What to do with this lot chaps?

    Advice needed

    Lloris Elliot
    Bellerin Maguire Smalling Kenny Mariappa
    Salah Richarlison Hazard Surman Carrick
    Kane Firmino Rooney

My defense for next gw makes painful reading:
    - Bellerin (Liverpool H)
    - Maguire (United H)
    - Kenny (Chelsea H)
    - Mariappa (Brighton A) but don't think he's guaranteed to start

2.8m itb so how do any of these sound?

    A) Carrick and Bellerin >> Sterling and Masuaku (-4)

    B) Carrick and Maguire >> Pogba and Masuaku (-4)

    C) Carrick, Maguire and Bellerin >> Pogba/Sterling, Jones and Masuaku (-8)

I think people are underestimating Kanes next 2 in order to justify selling him. Burnley are solid for sure but they've also conceded at least a goal vs every single big team this season, they are not impenetrable. And Southampton on the other hand were destroyed by Leicester, an ok defence at best.

Agreed on Burnley - but Son to score it seems annoyingly likely.

Wouldn't have been good in any season with 10 blanks out of 17. For 12.8m or whatever, I'd want a player who is consistent and can be given the armband on most occasions.

Can't see it, Spurs are struggling for weeks now, it all depends what you are doing with the money though.
It's hard to get a decent striker nowadays and you should invest your 5th mid and defence without too many hits.

I've been thinking for a while and here's the plan I came up with:

    GW19: Gomes > Adrian
GW20: Lacazette, Mee > Vardy, Jones (-4 hit)
    GW21: Richarlison > Pogba
GW22: Morata > Kane (probably TC)

At the end my squad would be:
    Adrian - Elliot
    Jones - Christensen - Monreal - Dunk - Kenny
    Hazard - Salah - Sterling - Pogba - RLC
    Kane - Vardy - DCL

    What do you think?

      On his return from injury

And he has been playing in CL still remember
      He isn't injured

Nah you guys are right, he is a demi god.

      Torn between Pogba and Sterling...

I was going to base this on whether Pogba plays in the first game...if he does then I will get him. Just wary his antics may cause him to be second choice (i.e. he is quite volatile)...but then who is even first choice...

      A) Maybe. Not urgent. Not for a hit.

taken out Mee for West Ham defender.
Keeping Pope a bit longer due to save potential.
Think Burnley been riding their luck a bit. Not the best side against Stoke or Watford at home and a missed penalty yesterday.

Kane still the top scoring fwd in FPL. You can't play 0 up front and 6 in midfield. Unless you go DCL and Austin up front.

Kane is 2.2m over Morata and has only 11 points more. For people who want to upgrade their shoddy 5th mid/def here is where the money will come from.

He will do by the end of the season. Thing with Kane is he scores braces and hat-tricks and then blanks. Captaincy troll (you don't know when he will deliver) too. But he gets points.

Wijnaldums is shockingly bad. How he's never replaced speaks volumes to Liverpool's depth at centre mid.
