Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Premier Pair Make Progress

Huddersfield Town need extra time to ensure that their FA Cup journey goes on – and another Gameweek 31 fixture will go ahead – while a forgotten striker option finds some form as Swansea City destroy lower-league opposition.

The most notable issue to arise from Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at Birmingham last night was that it now guarantees a third fixture will be played in Gameweek 31.

The Terriers had to wait until extra time to secure their place in the fifth round and a home tie with Manchester United.

That, in turn, means one of those sides will be able to fulfil their league fixture when the quarter-finals take place over the weekend of March 16.

Huddersfield are due to entertain Crystal Palace in the league on that date, while United travel to West Ham.

As both the Eagles and the Hammers are already out of this season’s FA Cup, one of those fixtures will now join the other two matches – Liverpool v Watford and Stoke City v Everton – already guaranteed to take place during Gameweek 31.

Terriers coach David Wagner made five changes to the side that lost at Old Trafford on Saturday, but it was still a team packed with regular starters.

Striker Laurent Depoitre and defender Christopher Schindler missed out through injury, but Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince were recalled in midfield, with the latter’s shot leading to an own goal that leveled the tie.

Despite incessant pressure, Huddersfield couldn’t find a winner in 90 minutes, although they put the tie to bed early on in extra time.

Steve Mounie, from a Mooy assist, and Rajiv van La Parra scored within seven minutes of the restart before Ince rounded off the win a minute into the second period.

Abraham stakes his claim

At the start of Gameweek 12, Swansea striker Tammy Abraham’s ownership peaked at just under one million managers, and his price at 6.0, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Fourteen Gameweeks, no goals and six price drops later, just over 200,000 managers remain.

Four goals in eight Gameweeks made him one of the leading early-season budget strikers in FPL; a mantle that team-mate Jordan Ayew is currently trying on for size.

But Abraham’s star turn in last night’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County looked particularly well-timed in light of the season-ending injury suffered by Wilfried Bony in the Swans’ 1-1 draw at Leicester City last weekend.

Speaking before the FA Cup fourth round replay, manager Carlos Carvalhal was happy to talk up Abraham’s prospects.

“Tammy Abraham is an interesting player. He has only been training with us for something like a week and a half after injury. Wilfried’s injury will give more opportunities to him and he is someone we believe in a lot.”

The striker responded with an eye-catching first-half display against the League Two side, scoring two goals and setting up another as the Swans went into the interval 4-1 up.

Abraham then capped a fine display with an assist for the final goal.

Carvalhal’s post-match summary acknowledged the striker’s performance, though he also made it clear that he expects more.

“He is progressing – but he can do better in my opinion. He knows he can do better. If you ask me between now and when we arrived has he progressed, he has but I’m still thinking he can do better. We will try to push him to do better.”

Ayew’s four goals in the last eight Gameweeks is likely to keep him in the side for the short term. However, Abraham will need monitoring, particularly if he is given a chance to take advantage of his team’s excellent schedule.

Swansea entertain Burnley this weekend before an FA Cup fifth round tie at Sheffield Wednesday.

The fixtures after that (bha WHU hud SOT mun wba EVE) could well decide their Premier League fate and if Abraham can rediscover his early-season form, it could revitalise a side that has managed a joint-worst 19 league goals thus far.

New signings Andre Ayew and Andy King were cup-tied and unavailable to Carvalhal, who made seven changes to the team that drew at Leicester. That saw him revert to a 4-4-1-1, giving Luciano Narsingh an opportunity to impress on the right flank.

The Dutch international set up three of the Swans’ four first-half goals as Abraham and Nathan Dyer – again playing up behind Abraham – scored two apiece.

Kyle Naughton also boosted his stock with a second-half goal, at a time when Fantasy managers will be assessing the merits of the Swans backline.

Wayne Routledge, Tom Carroll and debutant Dan James rounded off the scoring, with an assist coming from Routledge.

Swansea are now one win from an FA Cup quarter-final place.

Should they beat Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round, that would mean their Gameweek 31 home match with Southampton would have to be rescheduled.

And even if they don’t, the league match might still not go ahead as the Saints also remain in the FA Cup.

The south coast side take on West Brom in the fifth round. Should the Baggies be knocked out, their Gameweek 31 trip to Bournemouth would then be confirmed.

A reminder that Ben Crellin’s Twitter Moment provides full detail on the scenarios that could develop for Gameweek 31 and beyond.

    2 FT.
    Bank: 0.1

    Pope
    Jones - Mee - Alonso - Cresswell
    Salah - Son - Sterling - Lingard
    Kane - Firmino
Subs: Adrian, Rodriguez, McArthur and Mbemba.

What should I change. I think my team needs improvement. Can you help me there?

All these people aiming for so many BGW players... More than 6 is excessive imo unless using a FH. 11 would just cripple your ability to make transfers which could be necessary (f.e. if Arsenal are set to turn it on after their two difficult fixtures but due to getting in BGW players they are ignored). I don't see anything necessary other than Salah tbh.
A squad of Salah, and then 3 or 4 from Firmino Walcott Deulofeu Shaqiri and maybe a fodder defender or two max should easily see you through well above the average GW score. Assuming no other teams are sure to blank, if there's another game more options might be worth it but honestly compromising your team for one gameweek can be very detrimental.

The problem with the FH in 31 I see is that aren’t the teams just going to be absolute garbage so we will just be loading up on 1 or 2 pointers?

Therefore we might end with a score about 6-8 points more than we would without the chip and less than some casual who just does nothing and gets a Milner Captain 15pointer? 🙂

Won’t the second blank have more options?

"Garbage teams" are playing each other though so they aren't all going to get tonked and have mass blanks - it's a trap many fell in last season.

I am still favouring the FH35 though, but either strategy could work.

Suppose, just think we are massively overthinking and nowt much will happen at all. Wonder if the FH might work best 35

For me, the issue with FH in 35 is that there are fewer teams in the cup, and therefore people using the FH chip get less of an advantage. Let’s say Liverpool, Arsenal and United have fixtures, itnis still possible for those with no FH (but WC intact) to get XI decent players out in 35 and then WC for DGWs

Depends on your strat and if you plan to load up on GW31 players, if so then Bauer, he has a nice fixture this week too. If not Fernandez or Naughton (they may still play in 31 but not guaranteed)

Am I the only one unsure on Shaqiri? he's a great player to watch, always has been and his stats are OKish for his price but.. I dunno, those fixtures don't scream goals to me either. Probably wrong as ever, have been most this season to be fair lol

Deulofeu is tempting me more for some reason.. Have no idea why

This challenge didn't creep up on me, I knew it would be an issue this week but I didn't want to weaken my team deliberately just so I don't have a benching headache. I have selected a strong front 8 on purpose so I can rotate according to fixtures but also building a decent bench to cover rotation/injury & navigate 31. It's not the worst problem to have, just curious who people would choose to bench 🙂

For people worrying about Free Hit for GW31, you can get a team like this, for example:

    [Pickford/Butland]
    VVD / Coleman / Sakho
    Salah (C) / Walcott / [Richarlison/Deuloufeu] / Zaha
    Firmino / [Sturridge/Rodriguez] / Wilson

    Subs: [Pickford/Butland] // Shaqiri / [Hegazi/Evans/Dawson] / Bauer

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Xniaw-tEEiXoyqbGZLzMx6XEcv9TLolfa8GzndvTPw/htmlview?sle=true#

The above is assuming United beat Huddersfield (likely) and if Southampton beat West Brom (50/50 chance). Even if West Brom win, you could switch out WBA/BOU with ~relative ease.

They're really not all 'crap' players. Limited - yes, but it is not the most unlikely thing in the world that some of these players score well that week. Just an example - nothing more.

    1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

Realistically, you won't be left behind even if you have something like

      Salah Walcott Deulofeu
      Firmino Wilson

Perhaps, yes. Some of these players have decent fixtures up to ~GW31 anyway, so it does not hurt to bring them in regardless. It's obviously nicer having more players (better chance of returns) but yeah... rank changes won't be too dramatic unless you are highly ranked (more chance you drop as plenty will have planned) or a tad lower ranked (more above that have not planned, so you can prepare and jump).

Probably won't happen like this but I'm aiming for this team before GW29 and then GW31 take a hit to get 3 more (Shaq and two defenders):

        Vert Jones *Bauer Duffy Ogbonna
        *Salah Sterling *Walcott *Deulofeu
        Kane Auba *Firmino

8 players should be fine that week if you cover the main ones, and that team isn't bad in 29. FH not needed imo.

I've noticed a lot of FPL 'personalities' on Twitter referring to a history of 'top 1% finishes in their bio's.
This seems a bit bizarre given FPL official site only reports OR on your history page and don't seem to record the total number of entries each season anywhere on the website ...
Do these people actively carry out a calculation at the end of every season to ensure the validity of their claim or just an educated guess? 🙄

What's your history like, anyone got a few 'top 0.001% finishes' worth shouting about? 😆

You are right fpl should give the total number of entry's in a given season next to your finishing place.

It sounds better than saying I’ve finished in the top 10k twice in 10 years. The vast majority of them are just very average players like the rest of us but have hugely inflated egos and like to consider themselves elite fpl players.

The argument for the bgw is similar to what happened to everyone this week with defenders.... Barely any defenders returned and many didn't play. So we weren't hurt that bad really

No cuz we were in the same boat. If someone go FH with starters you will hurt as an owner for eg. of 7 players (vs 11)

Yeah but they could easily blank like all defenders did this week

Pointless hypothetical. Yes they could. Or they could all haul. Or it could be a mixed bag. All you can safely assume is that in fpl, having 11 starters in a GW is better than having 6. The more you can do to ensure you have a full team playing in a BGW, the better. Can't see how that is up for debate.

Mawson worth 0.5 extra over Naughton?

I think so, goal threat alone. Naughton for me is a 5 points man at best (yellow cards)

I’d go Fernandez (4.4) over Naut if you want to save £

Thanks. I guess Alfie will get 1 or 2 more attacking returns before season ends.

No idea what to do with this lot, 2FT:

    DDG Elliot
    Alonso Monreal Mee Chilwell Hune
    Salah Haz Sterling Shaq Choupo
    Kun Firm Niasse

    a) Monreal to x, roll FT
    b) Kun + Monreal to Kane + Daniels/4.7
    c) something else

B looks best but mayby try to save so Monreal if he is out to a player with game in 31. Vvd maybe. If Mon ok that sell Chilwell to Martina maybe

If you don't have a wc, surely gw31 is the best week to use the FH chip? And then hope for not to many blanks in gw35?

Would be insane to transfer out to many premium players for gw31, only to get them back, right?
