Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Aguero Goes Big

A four-goal blast and the season’s top Gameweek score from Sergio Aguero lights up Man City’s 5-1 win over Leicester City, bringing joy and anguish to Fantasy managers far and wide.

What a difference a week makes.

Some 16.59% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – close to a million overall – captained Sergio Aguero to a dispiriting two-point haul at Burnley last Saturday.

It was a decision compounded by Mohamed Salah’s double and 15 points the next day against Spurs.

Only 13.14% had handed the armband to the Egyptian, and it was clear that they weren’t going to make the same mistake when today’s deadline came around.

Salah is this Gameweek’s most-captained player, with 1,265,000+ (22.06%) hoping for big things from tomorrow’s trip to Southampton.

Some will have doubtless transferred their allegiance from Aguero, who was captained by 778,000 (13.56%) managers ahead of today’s outing.

Keeping faith in the City striker produced a season-best 21-point haul as he fired a second hat-trick in four Gameweeks – and his third of the season – in the demolition of the Foxes.

Salah is outstanding, but he’ll do well to get anywhere close to Aguero’s tally, which could be hugely significant for many overall rankings and mini-leagues.

Aguero has now scored nine goals in six Gameweeks and has 11 from his last five home matches.

Those home comforts are extreme – he’s scored 66 points in his last five matches at the Etihad Stadium, with a mere 16 from his previous five away fixtures.

Aguero is now up to 7.3 points per match, second only to that man Salah among outfield players, although his biggest haul arrives just as we’re forced to re-assess City’s assets.

Guardiola’s men now play three times before they resume Gameweek action – in Basel, at Wigan in the FA Cup and against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.

That not only offers the risk of injury and suspension, but there’s also the added scenario where if Wigan take City to a replay – not out of the question if Guardiola fields a second string XI – then the Gameweek 28 fixture with Arsenal will be postponed.

Aguero is already attracting big interest in the FPL market – he is second for transfers in currently – but, in truth, investing now is a risk.

The reality could be that his window may have passed as Guardiola indicated in Friday’s press conference that Gabriel Jesus might only be ten days from a return.

Certainly, having been pushed into six successive 90 minutes since Jesus’ injury at Crystal Palace, we can expect some rest for Aguero once the Brazilian returns. A rotation policy will likely resume, particularly if Aguero is seen as the favoured option for European ties.

De Bruyne & Sterling chip in

While Aguero dominated, the efforts of City’s key midfield assets should not be overlooked.

Raheem Sterling was the fourth most sold player ahead of the Gameweek, with 105,000+ managers moving him out.

He punished the doubters with a goal and has now produced a goal or an assist in eight of his last 10 starts.

Kevin De Bruyne, meanwhile, provided a hat-trick of assists, moving him to 16 for the season, which is four more than any other player.

He has 45 points from his last five home matches and his 13 points today was his eighth double-figure haul of the season, six of which have come at the Etihad.

The Belgian has managed just one goal across the last nine Gameweeks, but eight assists over that spell is a decidedly pleasant second prize for his 22.9% ownership.

The only dampener on the day was City’s defence, which continues to falter.

With just one clean sheet from their last six Gameweeks now, Nicolas Otamendi – the top owned defender in the game (31.3%) – is looking increasingly vulnerable.

His plight is not helped by the fact that he started his 15th successive match in all competitions today, with a rest surely beckoning soon.

Otamendi was sold by 50,000 this week, and those sales will likely pick up now the fixtures are stiffening, with Arsenal and Chelsea up next for Guardiola’s men.

Four in four for Vardy

Leicester briefly threatened to make a match of it when Jamie Vardy scored for the fourth successive Gameweek – the first time he’s managed that since his record 11-in-a-row spree from the Foxes’ title-winning year.

And Riyad Mahrez finally made an appearance following his transfer window shenanigans, starting on the bench before coming on after 61 minutes.

The Algerian has lost 469,000 owners since his non-transfer tantrum, but Leicester’s schedule is strong enough for him to start rebuilding bridges promptly.

The Foxes play only two of the top six over the remaining 11 matches, although they will miss Gameweek 31 if they can see off Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Don't think any of the defenders have enough goal threat, Pickford is the only one who looks to have real value thanks to save potential.

Too soon to go back to Coleman who picked up a hamstring problem and is unfortunately overpriced anyway. Maybe Martina at a stretch if he's nailed.

I usually have a link bookmarked on my tab but I’m on my iPad so unfortunately can’t give it directly, but if you search up “Ben Crellin” on twitter he is an expert on giving info about the DGWs

The outlay for the rest of the season will most likely be:
          GW31: blank
          GW32/33: play WC chip
GW34: double - play TC or BB
GW35: blank - play FH chip
GW37: double - play TC or BB

but yeah check out Ben Crellin’s twitter

Thanks for the help mate, I guess at this point it's still too early to see which DGW will be 'stronger' and which will be the 'worst' blank GW in order to determine which chips to use when

    2. TallestJohn
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

The big DGWs will be GW34 and 37 (that's in the spreadsheet as well if you go to the full calendar).

Basically depends whether you have free hit and how you want to approach the blanks in 31 and 35. Most (including me) seem to favour wildcarding before the first DGW (i.e. GW32-33)

      1. Tiki-Taka
        • 13 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

Ahh I see now thanks mate. I still have all my chips except Triple Captain (Kane lol)

What's the reasoning for WC before the GW34 dgw as opposed to the GW37 dgw?

Similarly what is the rationale for when to use the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips?

        Thank you

        1. TallestJohn
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

By the start of GW32 I believe we'll know who'll blank in GW35 (and therefore have a DGW, probably in 37) due to FA Cup semis.

Wildcarding before 34 allows us to set up a good team with both DGWs in mind, while disregarding the blanks in GW35 as Free Hit can deal with that.

Bench Boost: more games in a DGW = generally more points as long as you avoid rotation.

If you've got him and you aren't using free hit in GW31 just stick. Getting him out would probably lead to more transfers/hits down the line and hits aren't worth it when it comes to GKs.

To all of us who still have the 3 chips:

Free hits is for around March where there should be a GW with only 4-5 matches like last year? ( GW 31 or 35 this year)

Bench Boost obviously around the end of the season where there is always a big DGW?

Triple Captain is more interesting though... I would have put it on Kane for GW 22 because he had the form and the fixtures... good I didnt...

If we are playig Bench Boost around the end season, will we have other chances for Triple Captain?

    1. TallestJohn
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

Free Hit just as you said. Unless you want to actually Free Hit for a DGW but then you're stuck for the blanks.

Bench boost is about the right balance of good fixtures and rotation. Probably isn't necessary to go for 15 players who all have 2 fixtures because a few of them will probably be outscored by players with just one game.

Today showed you can use Triple Captain any week where the form, fixture and player are all good enough, DGW is just trying to increase your chances and it's worked in the last couple of seasons.

I think Spurs will show some improvement now that everywhere is back from injury (especially Toby), and will be looking to bring in one of their defenders to replace that worthless sack of Stones
I would normally prefer Bavies, but I fear that he's a rotation risk and would be rested for CL. Would that make Alderweireld the best option for nailedness and for his slight set-piece threat?

The worst thing about not captaining Kun this GW...
was receiving an FFFix notification of his 4th goal about 10 mins after the match ended (standard delay for some reason) and for a split second (a truly horror stricken moment) wondering if the match was still going on somehow, and Kun had netted his 5th 😯 :phew:

For those of us with the free hit chip and planning to use it in GW31 ideally we want as few teams to have a fixture as possible or is more teams more advantageous over those who have used their free hit chip ?

Don't think it hugely matters about the number of games, more:
      - How you use the chip relative to the preceding/following GWs?
      - Do you still have your wildcard?
      - Picking the right players

Even if there are only 4 matches in GW31 and you use FH, how much will it benefit you if the scorers are Ryan Fraser, Daniel Sturridge, Tom Ince, Yohan Cabaye, Dejan Lovren, Troy Deeney, Jese and Calvert-Lewin?

Maybe downgrade the other City player and get KDB? I don't fancy their defence until GW34 now.

Otherwise maybe look at Walcott or Arnie

Thanks. Could downgrade ota and get kdb for Alli. Next two city fixtures are tough tho.
