Jonty Joins As Community Manager

Fantasy Football Scout is delighted to announce that Jonty has joined the team as Community Manager from this week. Jonty has been a fantastic contributor to the site for several seasons but now joins the ranks, along with Paul, on a more permanent basis as Fantasy Football Scout continues to grow.

Jonty will be dedicated to working with the community over the season. His first task will be to recruit a team of moderators to work with us on HomeCrowd, the new comments system, to ensure that this new system helps to improve community interaction over the summer and for the season ahead.

He will also be responsible for such matters as Fantasy Football Scout cup tournaments, the Fantasy Football Scout Leagues, the weekly newsletter for members and for a series of articles that will draw on the very best community contributions and activity as the weeks roll by. It’s also pretty certain that he’ll continue to contribute to the ScoutCast, of course, bringing further community insight to the regular nonsense provided by Granville and myself.

I trust you’ll join me in welcoming Jonty as Fantasy Football Scout’s new Community Manager.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    3rdturd and others

Im on holiday and finding it difficult to hit reply button

All he said was if 2.6m million people flip a coin often enough youll eventually get a winner

So I disagree because he just posted a load of garbage

With the help of mark and the scout teammost of us can pick good players...then we have very substantial shortterm swings in fortune...but in the longterm a great deal of the luck evens out...true you might be decently plucky one season and suffer abit the next but you can also see many good players start badly and then come through well bythe end

I think he made some good points. No doubt this site and good management will help you to win but chances are you'll need to be lucky. I think the top 50 will have all had a lot of luck throughout the season. Better management increases your chance of getting lucky nevertheless.

The sheer number of players just makes it very difficult to win. Getting a high rank is skill, winning will usually be a combination but lucky seems to be crucial.

I think that anyone who puts in the time here can reasonably expect to finish in the top 20k its the little bit of luck that determines who finishes 40k and who finishes top 50. To finish 40k you'll need a good few transfers to go very wrong and to finish top 50 you will need a good few transfers to go very right.

The more time put in on sites like this and looking at player potential the lower the impact luck will have on your overall season. I don't think anyone is saying its the same as having a 2.6m player flipping contest.

Ok but could somebody look at the ranking thing in the members area...some people do the business every year...even more do itt nearly every year...mark tells us every thought in his head and still outplays nearly everybody...sorry guys but its mostly skill inthe long term and if you didbadly youve just got to swallow hard and accept its your dodgy transfer decisions im afraid

I agree it is mostly skill too. Their is a natural variance in all our FPL decisions and that is where the luck lies even for the best of managers and its the normally the guys at the very top who are getting the good side of this variance.

    The Task at Hand

This is the optimal starting the team the3rdTurd calculated with their starting prices:

    Begovic (4.5) | Jussi (4.5)
    Baines (7.0) | Mertesacker (5.5) | O’Brien (4.0) | Bassong (4.5) | Davies (4.0)
    Bale (9.5) | Cazorla (9.0) | Michu (6.5) | Fellaini (6.5) | Nolan (6.0)
    RVP (13) | Suarez (9.5) | Benteke (6.5)

Looking through this we can see that the majority are huge bargains and many were unknown prior to season or in Fellaini's case had never previously shown such FPL appeal. This proves that picking such a successful team next season is going to be an enormous challenge and scouting the new players or the new roles of old players may be crucial. Filling your team with bargains to afford RVP, Bale and Baines looks like the way to go long-term.

I've taken a screen shot of this team to look at in August. It has made me realise I need to be more patient with good players. For example, does this show that we should have hung on to Cazorla all season and not got fed up with his dry spells?

The worlds gone crazy, who going to come and better what he's been doing with that team? There built around his style and I don't believe anyone stoke can aim for can do the job better than him when it comes to hoofing the ball and tackling hard... Not only that I don't think stokes players are versatile enough to change style

I put all of the key data from this season into spreadsheet form to help all slice and dice for upcoming season. Try again with the link:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqsCkAPbwxCCdEh3d2dmN0xEYm05enh1Q0FiMnY1amc&usp=sharing

File > Download save as excel is best for editing/sorting etc.

There's a second tab with a little legend on each of the fields.

No guarantees on any of the data older than this season unfortunately, as I did it so long ago with some dodgy lookups!

Based on the principle that it just requires the monkey to randomly press the correct keys in the correct order only once its entirely plausible. What this theory doesnt say is that the monkey will not realise what he has done or run a succesful marketing campaign.

If he is typing randomly, aka a computer randomly typing letters in, then yes it will happen. I just have my doubts that a monkey would randomly chose letters as a computer does. It doesn't have the ability to type. It's like saying with unlimited time I would be able to fly.

There's so many layers to it though. Each transfer has to look into the far the future as well as the next gameweek. And before you know how crucial that transfer will be, you need to know your future transfers and how long you are likely to keep the player. There's an endless loop in there somewhere. Finding the 'optimal' transfers is certainly above me, but finding a near optimal solution could be possible. Just look 10 fixtures ahead for example and ignore any future transfers. It would get complex I'm sure.

The amount of work going into it would be unreal! Imagine trying to calculate every single perfect transfer including all the price fluctuations! You would need some serious computer genius to be able to do it. Would be amazing to see it happen. Maybe we could start a fund get people to put in £10 each and see if we can raise enough to make it worth someones time!

From what I've seen - he's much more a number 10 than a goal scoring number 9 (which we still need)

He's got bags of potential. Strong, pacey, skilful... and he must have something special about him on the training ground etc. Captain of Partizan at age 18. Captain of Fiorentia currently. (Club captain old and not first teamer)

What would your ghost team get you? I counted up the points of my GW1 team, if I hadn’t made any transfers. I am 650 points better off. Admittedly this stat doesn’t mean much but it’s more than I thought.
