Scout Notes – Gameweek 34 – Sunday

Everton’s late-season momentum hands Louis van Gaal his heaviest defeat as United manager after an emphatic 3-0 win at Goodison. Elsewhere, Chelsea grind out a goalless draw at the Emirates to take a major step towards clinching the title.

Revitalised Toffees march on

Everton extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Goodison Park. Goals from unlikely sources propelled the Toffees into a lead before half time, with James McCarthy netting the opener (his second of the campaign) after a sweeping counter attack and John Stones bagging a debut goal courtesy of a towering header from a corner. Kevin Mirallas made his mark from the bench in the second 45, beating the offside trap to notch his second in as many weeks.

Mirallas’ back-to-back strikes strengthens his claim for a starting berth, having been usurped by Leon Osman for the Red Devils clash. For now, a lack of security of starts limits our interest in the Belgian winger. In the only other change enacted by manager Roberto Martinez, Arouna Kone dropped out to accommodate the return of Romelu Lukaku as the hosts continued with a 4-1-4-1 system.

Leighton Baines reasserted his potential for attacking returns with an assist to complement Everton’s fourth clean sheet in six Gameweeks. The Merseysiders’ run-in (avl, SUN, whu, TOT) certainly works in favour of the English left-back, yet Lukaku’s reinstatement ensures that Baines slips further down the spot-kick pecking order. Furthermore, with a sizeable proportion Fantasy managers already owning one of Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) or John Terry (6.9) – who boast three consecutive clean sheets – few will want to divert funds towards another high-priced defender in light of Arsenal coverage being of paramount importance ahead of their double Gameweek 37.

United wilt without Carrick

Having chalked up six successive wins before Michael Carrick’s calf injury, United have now lost two on the trot without the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder – emphasising what a key figure he is to Louis van Gaal’s outfit. That being said, United will fancy their chances of a recovery in the their next two outings (WBA, cry), before a home tie against Arsenal in the penultimate Gameweek of the season presents another stern challenge.

In the absence of Carrick, Van Gaal named fit-again Daley Blind as the sitting midfield in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Radamel Falcao dropping to the bench and Wayne Rooney reclaiming the lone striker berth. The ex-Toffees academy star suffered an injury in the dying embers of the encounter and was forced off with a knee problem – Van Gaal said post-match that the severity of the injury is as of yet unknown.

Gunners rearguard shows resolve

Arsenal’s defence tallied their seventh clean sheet in 13 fixtures following a 0-0 draw with Chelsea. They’ve conceded just seven across those matches, too, encouraging investment in the Gunners’ rearguard ahead of their double. Hector Bellerin (4.6) and Nacho Monreal (4.8) immediately catch the eye by virtue of their modest price tags, while Laurent Koscielny’s (6.0) four bonus points in two outings and greater security of starts also renders him a strong option.

On the flip side, Arsenal’s attacking contingent offered little in the way of goal threat for Chelsea’s visit to the Emirates. Joint-top scorer Olivier Giroud drew a blank for the second consecutive Gameweek, fashioning just two (off-target) shots on goal. Nonetheless, the French marksman should attract a flurry of new owners in the coming weeks, with Arsenal facing two agreeable match-ups (hul, SWA) before their double.

Chelsea rebuff last title contenders

Blues boss Jose Mourinho named one change from the XI that bested Manchester United 1-0, with Willian recalled in place of Didier Drogba – who was only fit enough to be named on the bench. With no recognised striker in the starting line-up, the Portuguese boss opted to field Oscar in the false nine role ahead of Willian, who operated in “the hole” behind his international teammate.

As expected – knowing Arsenal were the only team capable of staging an unlikely title challenge – Mourinho set his team out to contain, restricting the hosts to just one shot on target. Those managers in possession of Chelsea defenders were rewarded when they carded their third consecutive shut-out. Hopes of back-to-back clean sheets largely depends on whether Leicester City – who’ve been in fine form of late, netting 11 goals in five matches – can sustain their momentum when they play host to the league’s best defence on Wednesday.

Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas made it a clean sweep of blanks for Chelsea’s and Liverpool’s high-ownership midfielders in the first fixture of their respective doubles. Loic Remy’s continued absence and Diego Costa’s doubtful status for the Foxes tie offers little incentive for Mourinho to set up any differently at the King Power Stadium, though Oscar may well be set to miss out after being sent to hospital for head scans following a collision with Arsenal shot-stopper David Ospina.

Brainstorming on Arsenal players, who to get before DGW that is coming soon
Already have Koscielny but can you help me pick 2 other?

    A) Ramsey
    B) Özil
    C) Sanchez (would have to get rid of Aguero to afford that)
    D) Giroud (would have to get rid of Aguero to afford that)
    E) Bellerín or other defense double up

  7. Reviewing the Bonus Points system in FPL
    theoldgit
    • 14 Years
    9 years, 5 days ago

    Time for a review.

How can John Terry play the best game of his life, yet get 0 bonus points?

The obvious answer is, the bonus system is flawed. Don't get me wrong, the existing system is far better than the old one, but it still has it's faults.

How did Kos and Mert get maximum points? Tackles made, headers won, passes made? Not to difficult when your up against Oscar and an unfit Drogba. How many of those headers and tackles were crucial. How many were outside the penalty area where there not so important?. On the other hand Terry's contribution had a more direct effect on the match, yet this is not taken into account.

Would it not make more sense if tackles won, shots blocked and headers won inside the six yard box carried more weight than in the penalty area and the same applies to inside the penalty area to outside the penalty area. Having a 'one system covers all eventualities" seems wrong to me.

The other area where I think the points system is flawed is that no allowance is made for playing away. Obviously playing at home is an advantage so to even it out away players should be given a 5 point start.

    Something to think about?

    1. enrico.palazzo
      • 11 Years

I was thinking this to myself. As a Chelsea fan watching the game I thought he was absolutely immense. Surprised he won so many aerial duels and clearances and his bps/index score was so low

we all already know how the system works and isnt going to award teams that dont keep much possession. it has its flaws, but its not like theyre changing it every week, we have to play to the rules.

I don't know what was wrong with the original system of picking the best players similar to MOTM awards. It may have been subjective but at least the points seemed right most of the time whereas a stats based system leads to a lot of bizarre results

I honestly didn't. thought those bonus on top of the simplicity of the scoring system and the tactics of budget and price changes all made fpl near perfect for an ff game.

Totally agree re defensive midfielders - I don't want to be cheering on 'recoveries' (whatever they are) - one of the reasons I steered clear of the McD's World Cup game where everyone seemed to be loading up on central defenders and defensive midfielders

Trust me, that system can be more controversial. My friend is actually one of just two guys responsible for replying to emails for fantasy premier league and he says the number of complaints they got when they used the panel was a lot higher. At least with this system you know full well what the lay of the land is (look at bps history) so from that point the outcomes are less controversial. But they hone the system every year, it's always in development.

I once emailed in complaining that Aspas was only given 59 minutes despite being taken off at 59:45.

He received the email (upstairs in our flat), and said to me "come on man I'm only upstairs if you're that upset about Aspas you could've just talked to me about it"

              kick off = 00:01 = 1 min in fpl
thus 59:01 should be 60 min in fpl

imo MOTM should have +10 BPS

Agree, there is the human element which stats can't really address.

One main point is that 0-0 was better for Chelsea than it was for Arsenal, a very important element which is ignored by stats.

I wasn't into FPL when they had the man in the stands BAP system.

Was it awarded to one player, or three? (like now). Also, was it awarded like it is now, e.g. 3 points for MOTM, 2 points for second best etc?

Cheaper to use stats than employ people to watch/rate games for no other purpose than for FPL. The only thing they could do is somehow aggregate a select number of media marks out of 10 or sumat, but then there is a need to award the baps quite quickly which wouldn't be possible. The current system is flawed, but at least it limits objectivity and is the same rules for everyone. I guess if enough people complain they may look at tweaking, but has anyone actually complained directly to FPL?

    10. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

JT is an immense player but it doesn't always get rewarded by BPs because so much of what he does is positional (reading the game) and organisational. We all know that.

A bigger problem is that a player (Skrtel) can get 3 points for doing relatively little in one game while another player (Terry) can get 0 points for a great performance in another. There will be end of season games that resemble a training match more than a contest but 3,2,1 BPs will still be awarded.

I'd like to see the importance of BPs reduced. Maybe only award 2 and 1 in each game. Then it would matter less.

I don't like the subjective system. Friends and family I go to games with regularly disagree about MOTM. Some like defenders and notice what they do, others are more caught by pace and trickery, others by vision and passing. A stats based system at least gives some consistency.

Some Parts of the current BPs Rules I find rather controversial are,

      1. Goalkeepers and defenders scoring a goal......................12
      Midifielders scoring a goal.............................................18
      Forwards scoring a goal................................................24

Even though we all know the defenders are much less likely to score goals than the midfielders and the forwards.

      2. 70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes made)......3
80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes made)......6
90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes made)............9

Even though we all know that the defenders are much likely to have a higher pass completion ratio than the midfielders and the forwards.

      3. Goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet..........12

Not conceding a goal for 90 minutes is quite a tough task to accomplish. It certainly deserves more than 12 I think.

In terms of scoring goals I think those numbers are good. It's a striker's job to score goals so they should be rewarded plus they have less of a chance for CBIs

I like the more weight given to CBIs in the box compared to outside. I'd also like to see more weight given to forward passes in terms of pass completion %. You shouldn't just be able to pass sideways to your other central defender or back to your goalkeeper and get more BPS than someone that is actually attempting (and thus misplacing) more passes to get forward play started.

I am glad someone posted this because my closest rival had Azi and I had Terry and I logged in confident of a massive bonus haul, only to see 3 points for Azi and no points for Terry.

I think you would have to check the match in detail before making any conclusions, Azi might have had a good match too. But I definitely felt surprised at Terry not having 3 bonus points, let alone no bonus points at all, it seems bizarre whichever way you cut it.

But over the season Azp has consistently hogged BPs we know this so it makes sense to get him in, you get terry for the added goal threat

Was watching the match with one eye and the BAPs with other, and saw Koscielny (owned!) go from 0 BAPs to 3 BAPs when he put in a dangerous cross late on.

I saw your sour grapes post last night belittling the potential line ups of the DGW wildcard teams for GW 35, calling them lame.
I see you have 3 Cry Palace players going to Stamford bridge amongst overs, compare them to Chel, Liv & Leicester fixtures that's a wee bit of pot calling the kettle black.

I've 10 DGWers with 12 home fixtures in my squad next week and don't need to make a transfer although I probably will.
As I say, sour grapes maybe?

Decided to go Fab over Terry last week. Fab against his old club etc.

Chelsea already kept cs and will very likely do that again against Leicester who might have an off day before their more important matches.

Funny how it all makes sense now, why didn't I think like this last week!

Praying Leicester off day would offer something for Fab too!!

Would you lot prefer it if managers had to submit (and publish) their teams a few days before the match?

Before anyone goes on about injury doubts, they do this in rugby, which is a far more physical game and the teams rarely change - it is the exception that they do, and that player would not be allowed to be on the bench.

All of the BS spouted by managers gets on my nerves. In the US, coaches have been investigated for potential betting scandals for less than what Jose does on a weekly basis (i.e. claim that their star player won't play to improve the odds)

Arsenal have 5 PL clean sheets away all season. The reverse fixture was Arsenal 2-2 Hull. Hull will come out fighting and have nothing to lose in that game, GW36 v Burnley is the crucial one. You decide. 😉
